When making purchasing decisions, it is becoming apparent that many of us are beginning to take into consideration the ethicality of what we are buying and how it is produced. Spending ethically doesn't have to be difficult, and it doesn't mean that you can't save money while doing so. Our guest today, Tanja Hester, knows this topic very well. Tanya is the author of two award-winning books, Work Optional and Wallet Activism, and is best known for retiring from her career at the age of 38. In this episode, she will be sharing several things to think about next time you're faced with a spending decision to ensure you're spending ethically. Listen in as Tanja explains why you don't have to be making a lot of money to purchase ethically sourced goods, as well as how to think about the consumerism problems. You will learn the flaws in how we currently think about activism, how to look into what you're funding by purchasing from a specific company, and how to ensure you're purchasing from businesses that actually stand by what they claim. “There is this idea that you have to make a lot of money to be able to ethically spend, but I just really reject that idea.” - Tanja Hester This Week on Young Money: How to use every dollar spent as a force for change. What Tanja enjoys most about being work-optional. The things you can do today that make a big impact. How to think outside of consumerism. Where the world is missing the mark on activism. How to take a broader view on the way we approach things. Four questions to identify how to make better money choices. Key takeaways: Never stop learning. Do your research. Consumerism will not fix anything. Be more expansive in your thinking. Educate yourself. As women founders and leaders, we talk often about making money, and lots of it. But are we using the money we make to create the kinds of changes that we want to see in the world? I like to say that money is power, but only if you make it so. Your money becomes a powerful force when you use it in a way that advances your mission, aligns with your values, and brings your vision to life. And this week, I have someone who is a living example of what's possible when you're intentional about how you generate wealth and use your money to advance the causes you believe in. Instead of legitimate reform, companies often rebrand their problematic practices as “green,” “woke,” and “ethical.” Not surprisingly, we consumers are both angry and disillusioned by these marketing lies. But when we use our collective purchasing power to fight back, we show our strength. Hence, the power of the purse. Today I speak with author Tanja Hester. While Tanja doesn't offer easy solutions or simple answers in our conversation, she does lay a roadmap for making better (not perfect!) money moves that... Renai is ready to retire at the age of 36. No, she's not a tech founder who just sold her company; she was raised working class by a single mom and has worked in non-profits most of her life. We asked Renai to come on the podcast and share how she was able to reach financial independence so early in her career, because unlike many such stories, hers is as attainable as it is aspirational. A few things that come up in the episode: -- We discuss the FIRE lifestyle movement. FIRE stands for Financial Independence / Retire Early. Read more at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIRE_movement. We reference the term “coast FI.” When someone has reached “coast FI” this means they have enough money in their retirement accounts that they'd have enough to retire at a typical retirement age without making any additional contributions-- simply by letting their current balance accrue interest. -- Renai references the book “Work Optional,” written by Tanja Hester of the Our Next Life blog. Read more here: https://ournextlife.com/2018/10/24/work-optional/ -- Renai discusses using a down payment assistance loan from a state agency to finance her first home purchase. Many public entities offer such support to first-time home buyers. Find out more about the program Renai accessed via the Washington State Housing Finance Commission here: https://www.wshfc.org/ https://www.seattle.gov/housing/renters/buy-a-home -- We discuss house hacking, which essentially refers to buying a property for use as both your primary residence as well as a rental property. Read more about house hacking here: https://www.forbes.com/sites/davidgreene/2018/12/04/house-hacking-how-financially-savvy-people-live-in-expensive-markets-while-saving-money/?sh=4cf4a65470f0 -- One of Renai's ventures is running a vacation rental, and we discuss some of the mechanics of that starting at around 14:50.

Their financial independence blog was a 2019 Plutus Award Winner for Best New Personal Finance Blog. We discuss a wide range of topics, including an overview of the Slow FI concept she developed with her husband. We also dive into how she overcame several limiting beliefs in order to become an entrepreneur and launch a new business. Finally, Jessica shares why Slow FI is an ideal option for people pursuing financial freedom later in life. Jessica lives in Boston and works in nonprofit, in her mid-30s, learned about FI when she was 30 Husband had learned about FI but didn't feel like it applied to their situation She started to feel burned out in her job, toxic environment, but had doubled her income Felt like she needed to stay in her job for 10+ years to reach FI, traditional FIRE path didn't fit Ended up taking a 6-month leave due to anxiety and ultimately left her job Decided to work part-time, which was an option based on their savings Was able to focus on passion projects and find a work/life balance Came up with the concept of Slow FI: https://thefioneers.com/slow-fi-yolo/ “The journey to financial independence should be as remarkable as the destination.” Even with her pay cut they were able to maintain close to a 60% savings rate Read the book Work Optional by Tanja Hester, https://ournextlife.com/work-optional/, and was introduced to the concept of mini, or semi-retirement Decided to start a Slow FI Interview series: https://thefioneers.com/slow-fi-interview-series/ Found examples of people pursuing financial freedom while still living their lives Seven Limiting Beliefs blog post: https://thefioneers.com/limiting-beliefs-entrepreneur/ Started a coaching business to help people design an ideal life Ran into internal challenges and barriers that held her back and felt it was important to share these challenges with others Belief #1: I should be able to figure all of this out by myself. Belief #2: I should know that something will be successful before trying it. Growth mindset vs a fixed mindset Belief #5: I need to feel totally confident before moving forward. Why people struggle with overcoming fears to face a challenge How imposter syndrome holds people back Challenges that I've faced with my blog and podcast The importance of people sharing their stories and inspiring others The challenges of sharing FI concepts with people who are not pursuing FI Advice for people starting to pursue FI later in life: slow FI makes a lot of sense for people in their 40s Where to follow The Fioneers: Twitter: https://twitter.com/thefioneers Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thefioneers/ Facebook group: https://thefioneers.com/fb --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/fiafter40/support

What is Financial Feminism and should it mean something to me? Bethany and Ellie are joined this week in the Millhouse by Tanja Hester, author of Work Optional and creator of Our Next Life blog and The Fairer Cents podcast in a special two part series on Financial Feminism. This week they focus on Women and money in the home--specifically the roles women normally take when it comes to money. Tanja started her podcast because she felt like there were conversations that were not being had in the financial space when it comes to the unloved playing field and economic inequality. Tanja defines feminism as women and men are equal and that we are going to create a society and systems that uphold equality, even though the word often comes with unnecessary baggage. There are so many connections between finances and feminizes, and Tanja identifies a few of them. One of them is that men are often entrusted with "high finances" decisions, like where to invest their money, and women are often entrusted with the "low finance" decisions like how to stretch the grocery budget or how to clip coupons. They also talk about the stigma associated with women making major financial decisions and the idea of who is the bread winner. Tanja gives words for Ellie and Bethany to use when in situations where they may need to push back on perceived sexist comments and conversations without coming across overly bossy or dominant as a woman. Bethany and Ellie end the discussion talking about how stay at home moms have as much right and access to the money eared by their family even though they aren't the ones bringing in the money. Ellie shares how when she was a SAHM, she never felt like it was "his money" and "her money," but always "our money." Join the conversation next week as Tanja is in the Millhouse again talking about women in business. Zero maximized her income when she was making less, so she was able to max out her retirement savings when she earned more money. Zero saved $100,000 by 30 and recently quit her job to become a full-time entrepreneur. She continues to navigate her health challenges but has never allowed them to limit her abilities or accomplishments on her journey to financial freedom.  In this episode you will learn: How to boost your income so you can max out your savings Ways to save on taxes and medical expenses  The power of a positive perspective and money mindset How to save, invest, and survive on less in New York City and so much more Other related blog posts/links mentioned in this episode: If you liked this interview with Zero, you may also enjoy episodes 52 and 84 with Tanja Hester from Our Next Life.  Finding Adventure and Happiness on Your Journey to Financial Independence with Tanja from Our Next Life--Episode 52 How To Achieve A Work-Optional Life & Retire Early with Tanja Hester--Episode 84  Check out the Journey To Launch Podcast index here which categorizes all of the Journey To Launch podcast episodes by subject. Early retirement is one of those things that many people dream about and some do. My guest today is Tanja Hester. Tanja and her husband Mark Bunge were able to retire from formal employment when she was 38, and he was 41. Tanja is now able to devote her life to fun and purpose. She is the author of Work Optional: Retire Early the Non-Penny-Pinching Way. Tanja and Mark have an award-winning financial independence blog called Our Next Life. Tanja also podcasts on The Fairer Cents Podcast with her friend Kara Perez where they explore marginalized and tricky financial topics.  Her new found freedom also allows her to focus on interests like gathering women together to talk about financial independence at Cents Positive retreats and volunteering in her community. She’s also able to indulge her love of traveling the world, and enjoy sports like skiing, hiking, biking, paddling, and climbing around her home in North Lake Tahoe, California. She is basically living the dream. On today’s show, we talk about how she and her husband tracked their progress and timed their leaving work and how they downsized their lifestyle to retire early.  Tanja has researched and explored every aspect of early retirement from the best strategies for saving to redefining your identity without a career. She applies those lessons every day in her work-optional life. She has a regular column on MarketWatch. She’s spoken at Google, Tesla and at conferences around the U.S. She has been featured in the New York Times, TIME, MONEY Magazine, Vice Media, Yahoo! Finance, Forbes, LifeHacker, Bloomberg, Buzzfeed, and media outlets around the world. If you want to learn how Tanja was able to retire early and make it work, this episode is for you.    Highlights from Episode 18 [02:11] Tanja retired early at 38. [02:20] Tanja's definition of retired probably most closely matches the military definition of retired.  [02:40] She feels that things like being able to podcast and write are a privilege, because they don't feel like work. [03:01] When approached with projects, she's more concerned with the fun aspect as opposed to how much it may pay.  [05:01] Every six month period of Tanja's retirement has been different.  [05:31] Tanja was 38, and her husband was 41 when they both retired. Looking back, they would probably have gone a little slower and not been so aggressive with their savings goals and said yes to more things.  [06:18] If they could do it over again, they would have taken more vacation and rested more.  [06:58] They both started out at entry level pay, but they were making six figures before retirement. At the end, they were saving quickly.  [08:01] A micro retirement is more of a career intermission where you take a year or two off. You could also use it as a bridge to a new career.  [09:40] Tanja saw her dad retire with a genetic disability when he was 42. She didn’t want to be powerless and forced into retirement. She wanted to travel, hike and have fun.  [12:01] She developed her love of travel as a kid.  [14:44] Tanja and her husband were die hard index fund investors. They have tax advantaged funds that they can't access until later and then regular investment accounts that they can access.  [18:04] Solid investors have to think about downturns. Good investors need to be mentally tough or not look at things and get emotions involved.  [20:04] The worst thing would be to retire and not have a cushion.  [22:35] They have insurance on the exchange and pay $1000.00 a month.  [24:58] If you want to look into retiring early, track three months of spending and see where your money is going. Then get very clear about what you want to spend. Set up automated saving and investing.  [29:43] When you are watching your savings grow, it's a lot easier to avoid that impulse buy.  [30:43] If you know you're going to retire, think about what you want to do in advance and where you get your identity and community.  [33:28] She’s found ways to do public speaking without having to have a job.  [33:51] Tanja has learned that podcasting takes more time than anyone thinks. She also found that writing her book was more enjoyable than she thought it would be.  [35:35] She's a Top Gun fan!   Links and Resources Work Optional: Retire Early the Non-Penny-Pinching Way Our Next Life ADVENTURES in Early Retirement The Fairer Cents Tanja Hester on Twitter Tanja Hester on Facebook Tanja Hester on Instagram

This is the 100th episode of The Personal Finance Show! My special guests today are Tanja Hester and Kara Perez, the hosts of my favourite podcast, The Fairer Cents, and James Mwombela, who is a CFP and Associate Planner at Grid 202 Partners. Episode 100 isn't about someone's personal finance story. It's about an important personal finance topic. Today's topic is financial privilege.   My goal with this episode was to encourage you to think about privilege and how it affects your life and your finances. Most people understand obvious financial privilege.   If you come from a wealthy family, you have an easier time than someone who doesn't come from money.   Having to work as a teenager to pay bills is very different than choosing to work as a teenager to buy the things your parents won't buy you.   Graduating with student loans puts you in a very different financial starting position from someone who's parents saved up and paid for their schooling.   Working to save for retirement is very different from working to pay your bills and make the minimum payments on your credit cards. But as we discussed in the episode, there are also less obvious layers of privilege, like your gender, the colour of your skin, or whether you are an immigrant, which may affect your ability to make money.   Like Darryl Brown from episode 93 of the show who didn't think that anyone would want him to be their financial advisor because he's black.   Or Nico Barawid from episode 67 who's parents were both doctors, but were discriminated against financially because they had immigrated from the Phillipines.   There is still a lot of work to be done to increase Indigenous people's access to culturally relevant financial education resources, as Bettina Schneider and I discussed in episode 95.  Women are 80% more likely to live in poverty in retirement than men, as Saijal Patel mentioned in episode 77.  This is not surprising if you consider that women only gained the right to open a bank account in the 1960s. The Equal Credit Opportunity Act was only enacted in 1974, which made it unlawful for a creditor to discriminate against any applicant on the basis of race, gender, religion, national origin, marital status, or age.   Think about that for a second -  45 years ago, it was so normal to financially discriminate against anyone who wasn't a white male, that they actually had to make a law to tell financial institutions to stop being racist and sexist. On the other hand, white men have been able to open bank accounts and get credit since banks were invented hundreds of years ago.  And it's not like everyone stopped being racist and sexist on the day the law came out. As we discussed in the episode, this discrimination still exists, though it's not as explicit as it once was. I've never met anyone who doesn't think this is a problem.  There isn't anyone I know who would explicitly say that they don't believe everyone should have equal opportunity to make money and build wealth. So let's do something about it. Let's talk about it on podcasts like this.   If you have the opportunity to use your privilege for good, to help someone who might have less advantages than you, do that. Remember that privilege is just perception.  There's no logical reason why gender or race or all of the other differences we mentioned should impact your ability to make money.  It's all in our heads and to stop it we need to change our thinking and our actions. So that's my 100th episode.  I'll be back soon with new episodes so if you haven't subscribed to the podcast, please do that now, so you know when the new episodes are up.  If you liked this episode, check out the other 99 episodes and please leave me a review on Apple Podcasts. Beth MacMillan wants you to prioritize travel. In 2011, Beth and her husband, Mark, decided to use their saved up money and take a 6 month honeymoon around the world. You don't have to save $20,000 and buy round-the-world tickets like Beth did, but if you're interested in travel at all, you can pick up a lot of tips by listening to Beth's story. To be able to travel, you need 2 things, time and money. Maybe you have the time, but not the money, so you feel like you can't afford to go anywhere. Maybe you have the money, but not the time, so you can just fly somewhere for a weekend or a week and it doesn't seem worth the effort. There will always be barriers to travel, and if you have disposable income, there are a million things you can spend your money on instead of travelling. However, if you have the desire to travel, there are ways to make it a priority in your life. Every time you have extra money, you make a choice to use that money for something that is important to you. It doesn't have to be a lot of money, as Beth and I discuss in the episode. For Beth, travel was always top of the list. Maybe you're the same. Maybe you don't even realize it yet because you haven't been anywhere. Personally I believe every dollar spent on travelling is totally worth it. The “return on investment” of travel isn't dollars but it's a higher quality of life. But that's just me. And Beth, of course. P.S. If you want to ask Beth any questions about travel or concussions, you can email her here. That is just one of the important questions Tanja and I cover in today’s show. You won’t want to miss this week’s show where Tanja talks about how she and her husband were able to retire at the age of 38 and what steps they took to make that possible. Take a deep dive into Tanja’s journey toward financial independence and early retirement. If you have been wanting to understand and learn more about the FIRE movement, and how you can accomplish this for your life this episode is for you. I had Tanja Hester from Our Next Life on the show back in November 2017 for episode 133. Back then, Tanja was still an anonymous blogger who hadn’t yet quit her job yet to retire early with her husband. Well, a few months after we recorded that episode she left her job and has been officially retired ever since! Not only that, she finally revealed her full name on her blog and the news literally went viral, being picked up by MarketWatch. Because of this, Tanja has had a very busy retired life, that includes doing speaking, writing for MarketWatch, and of course publishing her first book Work Optional: Retire Early the Non-Penny-Pinching Way. Since so much has happened with Tanja since that first episode, I wanted to have her back on the show to talk more about what life is like in early retirement, and how you can strategize to retire early too! Retiring Early Isn’t About Opting Out Planning to retire early doesn’t start with the number crunching (or at least it shouldn’t). You need to figure out the “Why” before the “How”. Most people just think retiring early is a way they can finally opt-out of working, or subtract something from their life. Instead, you should think about it as a way to add more to your life. As we discuss in this episode, most early retirees aren’t just chilling on a beach reading. That’s nice for a vacation, but that can get boring quick if it’s your every day. Instead, think about what things you want to do now that you don’t have to focus all your time and energy on earning an income. Maybe it’s volunteering. Maybe it’s starting some new hobbies. Maybe it’s writing a book like Tanja. No matter what it is, retiring early isn’t about opting out of work, it’s about opting into a life that’s more fulfilling and meaningful to you. You Can Continue to Earn Money in Retirement Another thing we discuss is the idea that by retiring, that doesn’t mean you have to stop earning money…or working for that matter. Early retirement or financial independence means you don’t have to work to earn an income anymore. But, that doesn’t mean you can’t if you want to. From talking to so many early retirees on the podcast and in real life, all of them are working in some way. Usually not full-time, but they are definitely staying active and contributing to society in some way. And yes, this means they earn money. Earning money doesn’t negate the fact that they are financially independent or retired. It just means they have extra fun money to play with. Follow Your Own Path I see and hear so many conversations about F.I.R.E. (financial independence, retire early), most of which are negative. Many people believe it’s a dangerous idea because most people will either run out of money or it’s just completely impossible because they aren’t high income earners. As Tanja mentions, early retirement isn’t for everyone and that’s okay. Moreover, one person’s path to early retirement shouldn’t serve as a template you should try to mimic because it may not work for you. Personal finance is personal after all, so if early retirement is something you want to do, do your research, learn from other people’s journeys, then carve out your own path that’s unique to you. #178: Tanja Hester retired at age 38. She had a negative net worth until her late 20's, thanks to a combination of student loans, buying expensive cocktails and clothes, living far beyond her means, and not paying attention to her money. If you were to have met the 27-year-old version of Tanja, you wouldn't guess that she'd be a likely candidate for retiring early. Yet a decade later, she's saved 40x of her annual cost of living. How? Tanja worked as a political consultant in Los Angeles, and during her career, ascended to important high-ranking roles. Every promotion came with more grueling hours, accompanied by a raise. Tanja maintained her same standard of living, banking every raise. This simple strategy allowed her to rapidly grow her net worth. She didn't obsess about penny-pinching. She didn't clip 50 cent coupons for shampoo and soap. Instead, she focused her efforts on getting that next promotion, that next raise, and when it arrived, she saved and invested every additional cent. Today, at age 39, Tanja has published her first book, Work Optional, about saving enough to retire and live a lifestyle in which paid work is an option rather than a necessity. She joins us on this week's podcast to talk about the lessons she outlines in Work Optional. Here are 5 takeaways from this conversation. #1: We're taught that "you are what you contribute to the economy." Most of us learn, either explicitly or implicitly, that our self-worth is directly correlated with our economic efforts. This is an idea that we need to unpack and process as we face retirement, a mini-retirement, or any career transition. #2: Research shows that we perceive all change as loss, even if the change is positive. Retirement is a loss of identity. It's one of the most stressful and anxiety-producing life events. #3: Retirement and wealth will not create happiness. Money won't magically fix your life, health, relationships, outlook, or anything else. It's a tool that can help, but it's not a silver bullet. #4: A morning routine is grounding. It's an effective way to start your day feeling centered and calm. I'd recommend this for everyone, regardless of whether you're retired or not. #5: The easiest way to save is to keep living at the same level you're currently at, while earning more. But what if you could escape the traditional path and get on one that doesn't require working full-time until age 65? Regardless of where you are in your career, you can live a happier, more meaningful life, free from the daily grind. Message from Dan, who realized while listening to Monday’s episode with Grant Sabatier, that he is charging too little for his side hustle work, and paying too much in taxes. A message from Ben, who feels like building relationships with recruiters is more likely to get you job options that is $10-15k, compared to the $60-80k Grant mentioned. You’re unlikely to get a big pay bump by staying with the same company; getting a significant jump usually requires moving jobs. Maybe you don’t need a budget, but you do need to know what your life costs. Tanja Hester, author of Work Optional, joins the show: How did Tanja change from wanting to stick with her career forever, to choosing early retirement? Took Tanja and her husband about 6 years to reach early retirement. It’s hard to know your “why of FI”, but moving into early retirement requires some life planning. After 15 months, is early retirement meeting Tanja’s expectations? Whether you’re retiring at 45 or 65, the transition is still very similar; we all have a desire to matter and contribute. What are Tanja and Mark pursuing now that allows them to contribute? What things should people be considering in order to make their retirement plan bullet proof? A variety of different retirement options, aside from full retirement. One-phase or two-phase retirement – should you plan differently for your expenses and savings before and after the traditional retirement age? Does 25x and/or 4% work for you? When and how to cut your spending? It’s always better to over save. Tanja’s FI calculations don’t include social security, as there’s a possible it could change. Most retirees spend about $300k on medical expenses, beyond Medicare. For more information, visit the show notes at https://ChooseFI.com/113R

Ever dream of retiring early? Or just having enough in the bank so you can truly live a life on your terms? We’re looking back at the year and we had quite a few individuals on So Money in 2018 who are part of the so-called FIRE movement, have you heard of this? It stands for Financial Independence Retire Early. Now, just to be clear - because I know there is a bit of back and forth on what this actually entails- from my understanding and having interviewed so many people who are a part of this movement, retiring early does not mean quitting working, it just means you’re not tethered to your 9 to 5, you’re not working a job that you don’t love. You may be still making money even though - but you’re doing it on your terms. One of our guests this year from episode 687 was Tanja Hester, who arrived on the podcast having just retired and she’s not even 40 years old. After saving half of her income for years, she and her husband finally reached financial independence at the end of 2017. They left their careers and currently are enjoying outdoor life in Lake Tahoe. Along the way Tanja started a blog called, Our Next Life, to document the couple’s journey and she does monetize this so herein is how she’s making her early retirement money. But here’s the beginning of our interview when Tanja shared the specifics behind how she arrived at early retirement.  Also mentioned in this episode: Mrs. Frugalwoods, Vicki Robin and Andy Hill

Today, I’m interviewing Tanja Hester, who has been retired now for just a couple months. Here’s the thing, though, she’s only 38 years old. Tanja and her husband both worked as political consultants making six figures each. Both of them loved their work and found it fulfilling. However, after watching her father lose his mobility early in his life due to a degenerative neuromuscular disability, Tanja realized she could have the same fate. So, she decided to spend her able bodied years hiking, traveling, and enjoying all the world had to offer --- away from the office. After years of saving half their income, Tanja and her husband finally reached financial independence. At the end of 2017, they left their careers and are currently enjoying outdoor life where they live in Lake Tahoe. Along the way, Tanja started a blog called Our Next Life to document her journey. It now gets over 150,000 page views every month and even earned her the 2017 Plutus Award, the top honor in the personal finance community, for one of the best blog. #111: Tanja Hester and Mark Bunge used to have demanding but fulfilling careers as political and social cause consultants. While they loved the mission behind their work, they grew tired of the exhausting hours and grueling travel. Their home felt like a weekend crash pad. They had no time or energy to pursue outside passions like skiing, biking and volunteering. Six years ago, they read a book that changed the course of their lives. The book, How to Retire Early, set the couple on the path of financial independence. They moved from pricey Los Angeles to the more affordable North Lake Tahoe. They started automatically saving and investing huge chunks of their paycheck. They crafted detailed spreadsheets, plotting precisely how much they'd need to save before they could comfortably quit their jobs. The Fairer Cents: Women, Money and the Fight to Get Equal

Introducing The Fairer Cents, a podcast hosted by Tanja Hester of Our Next Life and Kara Perez of Bravely, that's all about the deeper stuff that impacts women, our money and our fight to get equal. This isn't a typical personal finance podcast -- we're not here only to cheer each other on with shallow epithets like "You go, girl!" and leave it at that, or to teach you how to save money at the grocery store. Instead, we want to understand together what we're truly up against, and hear from women whose stories don't often get told. If you're game to get real about money while taking down the patriarchy, then this is the podcast for you. Subscribe now!
