Episode Page The latest episode of the Ecosystem Member podcast is with the amazing interdisciplinary artist and environmental activist, Jenny Kendler. Many of you listening are probably familiar with Kendler's work thanks to her most recent solo project on Governors Island being reviewed and featured on the front page of The New York Times. The exhibition included nine sculptures that used materials from the ocean itself to raise awareness about endangered marine ecosystems. In the episode we talk about the piece “Other of Pearl”, which is made up of 12 oyster half shells where the oyster shell was grown around a bio-based figures of Greek and Roman antiquities. The exhibition is a perfect example of Kendler's work, which aims decenter the human to make space for the full biodiversity of Earth. Some of the other pieces we discuss include 'Birds Watching', which inverts the gaze of birdwatching using the eyes of endangered and/or threatened birds due to climate change, and 'Music for Elephants', which uses a player piano with ivory keys playing music created from data on elephant poaching that is driven by the ivory trade. As a podcast that aims to examine the relationship humans have with nature and the more-than-human world, her work is an incredible example of how art can ask big questions about that relationship. While the conversation focuses on her artistic work - which has been shown around the world at London's Hayward Gallery, Storm King Art Center, the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, the MCA Chicago and public locations as diverse as urban riverwalks, remote deserts and tropical forests - we also talk about her own relationship with nature and the more-than-human world. The topic being particularly relevant as she was just named an Artistic Fellow for the Center for Humans and Nature after spending 10 years as the artist-in-residence with the environmental non-profit NRDC, the Natural Resources Defense Council. She also sits on boards for 350.org and artist residency ACRE, and is a co-founder of Artists Commit, an artist-led effort to raise climate-consciousness in the art world. We talk a lot about specific pieces in this episode, so make sure to visit the podcast episode page at ecosystemmember.com/podcast, or watch the episode on Spotify or YouTube to see the work we're discussing. We need your help now, time is running out! Moore Park Golf Course in Sydney is at an important junction in its long history as a public golf course. Moore Park Golf Course was a golf course that from its very inception was built as a gateway to the sport of golf for the working class of Sydney. Those who could not afford an entry into the private exclusive clubs that were being built in the surrounding areas. A copy if you like, of how golf was accessed by those of the old country, Scotland. Recently, pressure to retain 18 holes of golf at Moore Park has been brought to a head, when late last year the NSW Government announced its intention to repurpose approximately half of the golf course space for other outdoor activities which does not include golf. Join me on this episode as I phone in a friend with one of the leaders of the campaign to save Moore Park Golf Course, Jared Kendler. Jared is a very passionate nearby resident of the Moore Park Golf Course and a regular player of the course. Listen as we take a very deep dive into what is at stake for the Moore Park Golf Course and its long history that began as the very first iteration of a public golf course in Australia way back in 1910. We also wade through the details that are sometimes overlooked when discussing Moore Park Golf Course and why we believe its very much worth saving and participating in the fight to save it as 18 holes. On this episode of Free Range, host Mike Livermore is joined by Jenny Kendler, the artist in residence with NRDC. Kendler is an artist and activist whose work focuses on climate change and biodiversity loss. The conversation begins with a discussion of one of Kendler's ongoing works, Amber Archive. To draw attention to the anthropogenic loss of biodiversity, this piece represents an imagined future where humanity is interested in undoing the harm that has been done. There are a number of energy intensive, high-tech initiatives in place to preserve DNA of threatened species, but Kendler imagines a more ancient and analog way (0:46-9:33). The next work Livermore and Kendler discuss is Underground Library, which represents a library composed of discarded and unread books that sample the history of nonfiction works on climate change. This piece surveys what we've known about the state of the climate and how that knowledge has been dismissed. Many of these books went unread and were discarded from libraries as a result. Kendler uses a method of burning known as biochar to burn and eventually bury the books, representing their destruction and simultaneous preservation (9:34-17:48). The Bewilder project highlights butterfly and moth eye spots which are not their eyes, but act as a decorative camouflage to evade predators. This piece serves as a biomimicry strategy inspired by activists who publish guides on how to disrupt facial recognition technology. The next piece is Birds Watching, which is a 40-foot sculpture that depicts 100 eyes of birds that are threatened or endangered by climate change. This piece is intended to represent the birds' gaze upon us, leading viewers to question their relationship to these animals (17:49-29:21). Studies for Bioremediation is a series of photo collages with a relationship to problematic monuments in Richmond, VA. Bioremediation allows for plants or living creatures to remove toxicity from a site. Creating a physical representation of this metaphor, Kendler implemented the idea of planting Kudzu, a quick-growing plant, at the base of the statues and letting nature do the work. The next piece is Music for Elephants, which is a restored 1921 vintage player piano with an all ivory keyboard. The music is based on data from scientists that work on elephant poaching. The keyboard plays a note for each month based on the amount of elephants that might die. This piece has a temporal existence as it unfolds through time, similar to extinction itself (29:22-48:52). Kendler's art is organically arising, stemming from a deeply research driven process. She finds a synchronization between the concept and the material which is very carefully articulated. Her work is always about culture change, as she emphasizes the importance of a contemporary moment that requires all of us to rise in whatever ways we can (49:53-1:01:52). Episode 9:  In this episode, the host, Angie Gust, continues discussing John Travis’s 12 dimensions of wellness as a way to improve your own personal health and wellness - this episode focuses on communication. Truly listening is a gift.  Listening can relieve stress in the speaker in that they know they are acknowledged and affirmed.  For the person listening, it can relieve stress in that they can become harmonious with another individual.  Angie talks about how while this year, 2020, is a critical year for our planet, unfortunately, the outcome of last month’s United Nations Climate Change Conference was another lost opportunity. Several personal actions are suggested, such as keeping a look out for gatherings in your area hosted by World War Zero, a bipartisan effort to unify the public in support of climate action. Gabrielle’s brother Horst Kendler joins us for a second hour. He came all the way from Austria to appear on the podcast. The Too Posh girls think it is a great idea to discuss One Night Stands only to find out that Horst cannot stand this conversation, hates the thought of it and does not see the need for this nonsense. Spyder on the other hand happily tells us about his experiences.Somehow the conversation takes a left turn and we talk about all the gross things that are being sold on ebay, like toenail clippings, etc. We are so disgusted and outraged and Gabrielle’s brother is very confused at this point what he has gotten himself into by appearing on this show.Just when we thought this show couldn’t get any funnier and crazier Marcella decides to read the 12 most common sex injuries that could happen to him or her. Horst is becoming more and more tortured by these topics of conversation and his shock and outrage leaves everyone in hysterical laughter. We cannot wait for this youtube video to go live. Horst is left completely traumatized, but he does tell us that he would love to move to the United States because everyone is so friendly here.

The Too Posh girls welcome Gabrielle’s brother Horst Kendler all the way from Austria. Even though he speaks English very well, the language barrier brings some hilarious and awkward moments that has everyone laughing, especially towards the end of the show. They discuss their lower middle class upbringing. Then Horst shares how he was scarred for life when he went on a ski trip with his Dad and caught him having sex with another woman in the same room he was staying in at age 11. He was cheating on their mother right in front of his son’s eyes and it scarred Horst for life.Horst feels that he was the accident of the family by the way he was treated his whole life and thinks his parents only had him to collect the $ 1000 from the Austrian government for having a baby.Horst cannot believe that his Dad passed away having disowned him and his sister Gabrielle, when instead he had expected him to make good for his awful, alcoholic behavior and the way he treated them their whole lives. Instead he gave their whole inheritance to heir half sister who wants no contact with them.We discuss Horsti’s inability to treat women right and that he expected his ex girlfriend to be ok to sleep on an air mattress in a car on a vacation where he promised 5 star amenities. We try to teach him that girls do not like this kind of treatment. He thinks girls should be tougher. This leads into Marcella sharing her disastrous Valentines Day date to a haunted house. We tell Men to plan their dating and courting better and to step it up.Horsti and his ex girlfriend are now in a platonic friendship and they travel together and have many same hobbies including their love for the Dallas Cowboys and all American sports. The Too Posh girls try to make Horsti admit that he occasionally has sex with his ex but he insists that never happens and that he only enjoys and needs sex when he is in a perfect love relationship. He talks about how funny it was when he was in Dallas for the Superbowl and the whole city came to a standstill because of a little bit of ice. Coming from Austria he finds that laughable. He wishes he could be a better brother and uncle but how difficult it is because they live so far apart.

Kendler and Kendler (1962) are remembered for their bold challenge to the behaviorist tenet, widely accepted in the middle of the 20th century, that the learning process functions in an identical manner across species and across the human life cycle. To the contrary, they argued, learning develops. Young children learn via associationist mechanisms, but by age 7, the learning process has been transformed into one involving internal mediating concepts that connect overt stimuli and responses. Today it is apparent that the Kendlers overstated their case in claiming that young children do not form concepts. There is ample evidence to the contrary, and a different explanation for age differences on Kendlers' learning tasks is required. Following the Kendlers' work, the question of developmental changes in the learning process was largely put aside, as interest in children's learning declined in general. It is now, however, a somewhat different question than it was in the Kendlers' day. Rather than formation of S-R bonds, learning is now more likely to be defined as "change in understanding" (Schoenfeld, 1999). In this context, it is productive to resurrect the question largely abandoned following the Kendlers' work. A study is described of 11-12-year-old children and young adults engaged in an identical learning task. Results support the proposal that learning comes to operate under increasing executive control in the years between middle childhood and early adulthood. Adults, it is suggested, are more likely to employ a meta-level executive allowing them to maintain dual representations, one of their existing understanding and the other of new information they are being asked to register. The executive allows these two representations to be maintained simultaneously and attended to flexibly. Without it, there exists only a singular experience of "the way things are" as a vehicle for understanding the world. New information may be assimilated to it, but no executive is available to monitor and manage the process.
