This week on Your Mom's House, Tom Segura and Christina P are joined by storytelling savant, Broadway boy, and sleepwalking legend Mike Birbiglia! Tom and Christina kick off the show glazing Tom's newly released Netflix series Bad Thoughts. They also check out some wild clips that include a fat as shit Steven Seagal, Daddy Reecie laying down the law, farting girls, gay walls, and threesome with a mother that'll make your skin crawl (or turn you on?) The Main Mommies also chime in on convicted SA-er Gerard Depardieu peeing on a plane. Who does that remind you of? If you said "Bert", you're probably right. Mike Birbiglia next enters the Mommy Dome and dives deep into how he went from sleepwalking out a window to developing one-man shows, hitting Broadway, and being in a Taylor Swift video. He shares how his religious parents reacted to his material, what it's like entertaining the Pope, and how becoming a dad has shifted his lens on life, comedy, and swim meets. Plus, they also talk bad radio shows, booking nightmares, bouncing checks, comedy condos full of pubes, and that time Uber warned Tom about a shootout. Mike and Tom also get into legacies, asking their dads the tough questions, and what it's like raising kids who could not care less about their famous dads. Plus Enny still does not likes gay stuff and CP's lipstick is still poppin'! Top stories today: 645,000 for a toilet! That YOU paid for! Netflix account sharing Do you share your Netflix password with a loved one? Well, Netflix MAY begin to start cracking down on this, sooner than later. Vaccination selfies People are excitedly sharing pictures and stories of their vaccination experiences. The response has been hate-filled. Much more in the full episode! _____________ NAVIGATE THE PODCAST: Chapter 1 How do you feel about paying 645,000 dollars for a toilet? Well it doesn't matter how you feel about it, because you already did. What the F#*%? We talk to the BC Liberal Critic for Jobs, Economic Recovery and Innovation, Todd Stone. Chapter 2 Anti-asian murder spree in USA spurs conversation about racism We've talked a lot over the last year about anti-asian sentiments. Since the pandemic, which originated in China, asian people of all descents were attacked unfairly. This reached a breaking point in the USA. Chapter 3 The Political Panel: Two Michaels on trial And supposedly China's criminal justice system has a 99.9 percent conviction rate. So, what hope in hell do the two Michaels have? Our political panel today includes former Surrey Mayor and MP Dianne Watts. And, Sandy Garossino, Former Crown prosecutor, Columnist with the National Observer Chapter 4 Vaccinated British Columbians to get special treatment? If what John Horgan said is true, this would be the case. You'd get special privileges if you're vaccinated that the unvaccinated would not. We chat about this with Super Awesome Science Show host, Jason Tetro. Chapter 5 Do you share your Netflix password? Netflix is testing ways to crack down on this. Is this fair? Does it not suggest in the terms of service that you can share your account with a limited number of devices? Does it matter who owns that device? Chapter 6 Vaccine selfie takers are being attacked Is it fair that people taking vaccine selfies are being attacked on social media for celebrating their shot? _____________ Remember to wash your hands, practice physical distancing, and stay home at all costs if you are sick. One popular theory for Brian Shaffer's disappearance is The Smiley Face Killer. Retired detectives Kevin Gannon and Anthony Duarte believe this killer (or killers) stalk popular college men, drug them at a bar, and leave them for dead in a nearby river while marking their work with an innocent smiley face. Is that what happened to the two young men in today's story or did they simply get too drunk one night and fall into the water? ---------- Written and edited by Schuyler Fastenau with the voice talents of Daniel Jones, Joe Burns, Brandon Maple, Kaitlyn Brown, Alexis Yordon, John Angeli, Justin Hissey, Sarah Brennan, and Antonio Hill. The Relatable AF Podcast is back to our normally scheduled programing and this week Dj and Tania had to write a very stern letter in our best “ I need to speak to your manager” hair cut to tell y’all that disliking things just because they’re popular makes you look foolish and miserable. Do better y’all! They also had a few things to say about Big T and her stolen performance from the East Compton Clovers at the Billboard Music Awards, but before then they took to time to give much praise and respect to the late John Singleton and his culturally important mark he left on Hollywood. In this podcast episode we chat with China-United States Binational Documentarian Hao Wu about how his movement between these two countries has affected what he has done online, both in personal and professional capacities. Hao grew up in China and has had healthy movement from China to the U.S. and back in his adult life. Although he is currently based in New York City, he admits that he is most interested in stories about China. One of these China focused projects, People's Republic of Desire, is about the Chinese live streaming platform YY and specifically about two popular Hosts on the platform. This documentary was screened in Shanghai, where I am currently living, earlier this year. Shannon Martin of Podbean and our local Host of the Podcast Brunch Club was there as well. In fact, during the screening and for days after the event, Shannon and I exchanged ideas, questions and ponderings about the documentary. We are very grateful that Hao was kind enough to agree to an interview so we could ask him about when the Internet became an integral part of his daily life, how creating a documentary about the trials and tribulations of live streaming for years affected his own online activities and the how his online tasks change, even now, when he flies from the U.S. to China and vice versa. In early 2015, Netflix made one of the most dramatic deals in the company's career, announcing it had paid close to $12 million for Beasts of No Nation, a grim war tale starring Idris Elba. By then, the streaming service had already found Emmy success with original series like House of Cards, and had even earned a couple of Academy Award nominations for its documentaries.
The program all about TV. Our guests: Dan Powell and Christine Nangle, executive producers of The Break With Michelle Wolf, coming to Netflix May 27, and American Veterans Center senior vice president Tim Holbert, director of the annual Memorial Day Parade in Washington, D.C., which will be simulcast live Monday on TV stations coast-to-coast and YouTube (via smart TV sets and TV-connected devices).
We're not mad, Riverdale. We're just disappointed. This was it - the season finale, the conclusion of a marathon season that saw a mid-season break and TWO hiatuses and it was...it was. No doubt we're SUPER excited about Kevin and Moose, and we're very intrigued by darkness lingering in Polly Cooper's eyes. Dark Archie is the Archie we've been waiting two seasons to pop out again. But there's a whole bunch of shrug material in the middle, including that "shocking conclusion" that is neither shocking, nor a conclusion. We know it's going to be at least 4 months before we get a new season - we just wish we had something better to go out on.PROGRAMMING NOTE: We will not have our season wrap-up out next week. Instead, we'll be re-watching the whole season after it drops on Netflix May 24. If you'll be binging too, keep an eye out in our Facebook group on where to share your thoughts about this season, and maybe we'll talk about your ideas on the show! Details to come soon. You can email us with feedback at macintoshandmaud@gmail.com, or you can connect with us on Instagram (macintosh.and.maud) and Facebook. If you like the podcast, make sure to subscribe and review on iTunes or your favorite podcatcher, and tell your friends. Manga Mavericks @ Movies Month is going strong! We’ve been posting new movie reviews on our Youtube channel every day and plan to do so for the entire month of May! These reviews will also be uploaded to our podcast feed just a few days afterward. I’ve just put up our Ghost in the Shell/Power Rangers podcast, a pairing of two remakes of beloved 90’s franchises that weren’t particularly well-received. Check it out and look forward to more new @ Movies podcasts popping up on our feed this month! Of course, @ Movies isn’t all we’re doing this month! We’ve got regular Manga Mavericks episodes planned too, just like the one you’re about to listen to! This week’s episode is kind of a back-to-basics affair. Both your regular Mavericks are present, there’s a normal amount of news to talk about, and we cover a few recent Jump Starts and one-shots to cap off the show! A pretty normal episode compared to the past couple of atypical entries. Honestly, the only thing that’s missing is a Bookscan list to talk about, but I’m sure we’ll have plenty to say about the next one. Before you listen to the show, I want to emphasize the content warning for the Gerard Jones story. There are some extremely graphic details we had to acknowledge that should be sickening to any sane human being. It made me physically ill when we were discussing it, and then again when I had to edit it. If you can’t stomach hearing about sexual violence towards children, then please, you are better off skipping that news piece because it is extremely upsetting. But hey, this isn’t a dour podcast by any stretch. I mean, we got to talk about loop theory, kaiju that can shoot lasers out of its arms, and a talking house that can transform into a giant mech! It’s irresponsible to ignore real-world problems to consume entertainment, but our discussion of these recent Jump Starts was a nice reminder of how valuable it can be to have a good manga to brighten up a bad day. Editor's Note, 2020: As a consequence of Nobuhiro Watsuki's charges being dropped (as discussed on this podcast), we've since reevaluated our feelings on Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro's own allegations and are less enthusiastic and supportive of him and his work. We still feel our discussion of Build King is worth sharing, but we wanted to note that our feelings on this comic and its creator are more complicated and critical now. Show notes: https://bit.ly/2Hsf6gq Three Week Catch-Up: Robert signs up for library cards at the Cincinnati Public Library and Mason Public Library Nerdy News: Netflix Wants to Buy Its Own Theaters Jenny: "Horrible idea. I would never pay additional money for a movie I could just watch for less at home." Robert: "I think there's potential and promise here. Some TV series nowadays, like Game of Thrones, are such pure spectacles these days with mega-blockbuster Hollywood budgets that they're on par with whatever's released in theaters." Jermaine: "I hate the movie, Mother! It's a total waste of time. I don't even wish I had those two hours back. I just wish those two hours were deleted from my life. Worst movie I've ever seen." Trailer Talk: Incredibles 2 Jenny: "With this trailer it's hitting the mark. It's not pretending to be something it's not. I'm excited! I don't see dads being offended by it. But if they made a movie about a woman going to work and a whole bunch of things going wrong, it'd be a total faux-pas. Five stars." Robert: "This movie feels very Scandinavian to me. I like how the traditional gender roles are reversed-- where the dad needs to stay at home with the kids and the woman is out being the bread-winner. But why am I so okay with the man being made the fool? 4.5 stars." Jermaine: "I think it's because men are in a position of power. That's why it's okay to make fun of them. That's such a good point though. I'm gonna put on my hater-pants and give it four stars." Review: Ready Player One Jenny: "I went in with low expectations but I loved it! There are some plot holes though-- they didn't focus on the outside world. Who grows the food? I liked the CGI. I really like it. One of the best movies I've seen this year. Recommend." Jermaine: "I've seen this movie twice. I'm still unsure where I am. The book was a total homage to the 80s but the movie only has a sprinkling of it. I hated I-R0k in the movie. And the love story between Art3mis and Percival is way cut down in the movie. I felt this movie was a whole bunch of lost opportunities. Still, recommend." Robert: "I've never seen The Shining and was totally lost during that sequence. I totally sympathize with the challenges of adapting a 300-page book into a 2.5-hour movie. I thought it was surprisingly faithful adaption though. Mark Rylance is a total revelation in this. I think his portrayal as an anti-social nerdy nerd is perfect. Recommend." Recommendations: Jermaine loves playing the new God of War-- "It is fantastic. The story and voice-acting is phenomenal. Stop and turn off the podcast, go downstairs to your Playstation, and download God of War. You're welcome." Robert enjoys reading Head On by John Scalzi-- "A lot like the Bruce Willis movie, Surrogates, from a while back. Good world-building, characters, and dialogue." Jenny watches Saiki K--"Just love it. Can't say enough good things about it. It's dubbed and has great character development. It's about a teenage boy in high school who has psychic powers!" Credits: “People who live in glass houses should shut the f--- up.”
Justin Simien is a writer and storyteller. He wishes his Seen List ended there. Instead, Justin recalls a youth of isolation as “the only black kid” in grade school and his later role as a “blaxpert” in workplaces. Justin and Miranda discuss race in the workplace and how snap judgements limit our ability to see the intricacies of one another’s lives. “People think they know who I am based on the title of my work” explains the creator of “Dear White People,” a movie turned Netflix show. Because of the controversial nature of his work, Justin is perceived as a cultural commentator with answers, but he prefers to been seen as a storyteller with questions."Dear White People" returns to Netflix May 4th, 2018Justin's Spotify PlaylistsSee Justin on Instagram and Facebook.
