Here is the second of a two part series in celebration of David Savran's new book, Tell It to the World: The Broadway Musical Abroad, a monumental study on transnationalism and the Broadway-style musical. In the first part, David and I spoke about (and played examples from) the rich culture surrounding musicals in South Korea. Today's episode focuses on Germany and the influx of Broadway musicals since World War II. Although the German-speaking world has a long tradition of popular music theatre, most notably operetta, the arrival of American musicals (beginning in 1955 with Kiss Me, Kate) made a very big splash. In 1961, My Fair Lady opened in West Berlin, became a sensational success, and permanently changed the shape of German musical theatre. Both Kiss Me, Kate and My Fair Lady are part of the first wave of Broadway musicals that have become part of the standard repertoire in state-subsidized theatre (the others include Cabaret, Anatevka (Fiddler on the Roof), West Side Story, La Cage aux Folles, and Hair). We also look at the development of home-grown Broadway-style musicals in both West and East Germany from the 1960s through the 1980s and their subsequent impact on the work of experimental theatre makers. The next to last chapter of the book studies the musical farces directed by the great theatrical innovator, Herbert Fritsch, since 2011. The last focuses on the work of Barrie Kosky at the Komische Oper Berlin and how he turned that house into the foremost theatre in Germany for innovative re-imaginings of Broadway musicals, with emphasis on iconoclastic stagings by Kosky (and other directors) of the work of Kurt Weill. We play examples from many of the thrilling productions about which David writes which deserve to be known by a much wider audience. Along the way we also listen to nearly a century's worth of performances by some legendary performers of German operetta and musicals, including Fritzi Massary, Olive Moorefield, Gisela May, Max Hansen, Dagmar Manzel, Horst Schulze, Ruth Rosenfeld, Julia Migenes, Julia Koci, and the late Rainer Luhn. Today I speak to Nathan Kosky who is the Vice President of Global Partnerships at AEG - no not the appliance firm but the global firm Anschutz Entertainment Group that owns the likes of the O2, Staples Centre, the LA Galaxy and Coachella amongst other famous venues and iconic festivals.  Nathan started in media sales before being recruited by AEG to help then develop the O2 Arena. He had a stint away to be the commercial director at Coventry City Football Club before returning to AEG to find a company that had substantially grown during his time away. Nathan discusses how deals get done at such a huge level and offers insight into the scale of the thinking behind these partnerships.  Finally, Nathan has recently launched a cricket podcast called Middle Please Umpire with Mark Wood & Miles Jupp and although it's only a few episodes in, it's had some really promising early numbers and I think he has a hit on his hands.  Nathan recommends the following books Fibber in the heat by Miles Jupp. Seavens Heaven by Ben Ryan An Astronauts Guide to Life on Earth - by Chris Hadfield. It's easy for marketers to think podcasting is a low-cost media, but in reality, a good podcast takes time, effort, skill and budget too. It might be better for some marketers to treat podcasts as an advertising medium rather than try and become a radio on demand production machine. Part 2 of the Quinn/Snelling conversation includes discourse on some of Australian television's deep dark past, various animal attacks (including some startling revelations about Wes's country upbringing) and whether or not there is a bicycle heaven.   Wes Snelling is a multi-award-winning and multi-award-nominated cabaret artist, mentor, dramaturg, director and producer. He is also the creator of the spectacular cabaret diva alter ego Tina Del Twiste. We talked about The Big Gig (ABC TV) and the Return To Eden miniseries which involved Rebecca GIlling getting eaten by a crocodile. In fact, there's quite a lot of stuff about animals, including a reference to Wes's house mouse, ferreting, why rabbits are SATAN, cats that act like dogs, close encounters with sharks and a mystery animal under a school building. That's not the start of a repressed memory, I'm fine.   We've known each other for basically twenty years, and it is evidence of my respect for him that in this episode I allowed my single most embarrassing television appearance public. Dear God, let that 1980s show have been razed from the annals of Australian broadcasting history...
