#129: Zach Cannady of Prema Farm joins Dave to discuss the inspiration he found working as a produce manager that led him to start his own farm, dedicated to growing crops that his community was asking for and could not find locally. Dave and Zach dive deep into conversation about Prema's composting and cover cropping practices, as well as the use of simple, human-powered farm tools that allow them to minimize soil disturbance.Zach Cannady grows food at Prema Farm in northern California, on the Nevada state line,  with his partner Kasey Crispin. He is the former Produce Manager at Great Basin Community Food Co-Op, where he learned about unmet demands within the food system that inspired him to found a farming operation.https://www.premafarm.com/To watch a video version of this podcast please visit:https://www.realorganicproject.org/zach-cannady-farming-to-strengthen-your-local-food-shed-episode-one-hundred-twenty-nineThe Real Organic Podcast is hosted by Dave Chapman and Linley Dixon, engineered by Brandon StCyr, and edited and produced by Jenny Prince. The Real Organic Project is a farmer-led movement working towards certifying 1,000 farms across the United States this year. Our add-on food label distinguishes soil-grown fruits and vegetables from hydroponically-raised produce, and pasture-raised meat, milk, and eggs from products harvested from animals in horrific confinement (CAFOs - confined animal feeding operations). To find a Real Organic farm near you, please visit:https://www.realorganicproject.org/farmsWe believe that the organic standards, with their focus on soil health, biodiversity, and animal welfare were written as they should be, but that the current lack of enforcement of those standards is jeopardizing the ability for small farms who adhere to the law to stay in business. The lack of enforcement is also jeopardizing the overall health of the customers who support the organic movement; customers who are not getting what they pay for at market but still paying a premium price. And the lack of enforcement is jeopardizing the very cycles (water, air, nutrients) that Earth relies upon to provide us all with a place to live, by pushing extractive, chemical agriculture to the forefront. If you like what you hear and are feeling inspired, we would love for you to join our movement by becoming one of our 1,000  Real Friends:https://www.realorganicproject.org/real-organic-friends/To read our weekly newsletter (which might just be the most forwarded newsletter on the internet!) and get firsthand news about what's happening with organic food, farming and policy, please subscribe here:https://www.realorganicproject.org/email/

For full show notes and photos, head here: allthroughalens.com   We're talking to Travis Cannady (@travis_cannady on IG), photographer and publisher of Better Off Zine. For our main feature, we'll tell you the story of the nearly-forgotten, yet wildly influential Margretha Mather (@betteroffzine). And that means we'll have to talk about Edward Weston too, so… apologizes all around. We've also a zine review and maybe even the answering machine.  Travis Cannady Along with being a film photographer and lab technician, our guest today, Travis Cannady is a zine maker. He creates and publishes his own, but he also does something pretty remarkable. He puts out a zine called Better Off. Each issue, the entire zine is dedicated to a single photographer. It's the zine equivalent of a solo-show. Or really, it's how some early photography periodicals used to do things. We've got him here, so let's talk his ear off. IG: @travis_cannady IG: @betteroffzine Web: traviscannady.com Buy Better Off Zine: betteroffzine.com Here are some of his photos: Margrethe Mather (and That Other Guy) The story of Margrethe Mather is not a simple story to tell. She was not a simple woman, nor a simple photographer. She was an anarchist in every sense of the word and held neither gods nor masters above her. Though wildly creative, she had little ambition for self-promotion, once telling Edward Weston, to leave her unremembered, to “pretend that I didn't exist.” In biographies of Edward Weston prior to the 1980s, if she is mentioned at all, Margrethe Mather is hardly more than a footnote. She was thought of as a woman, often naked, who posed for the great Edward Weston. The story of the two of them together had been consumed into his story alone. And it is our job to separate them. But that is no easy task. However, by Imogen Cunningham's reckoning, “in artistic matters Margrethe was, of course, the teacher. Edward, the pupil.” Margrethe's influence upon Weston can hardly be overstated. He followed her lead, and sometimes flat out copied her style. They were friends, companions, lovers, collaborators and ultimately estranged. Their relationship was in many ways mutually toxic. But since humans are always complicated, it was also mutually essential to their growth as artists. Here are some of Margrethe's photos:   And here are some of Weston's photos taken of and with Margrethe: The Center for Creative Photography issue we reference is available here: https://repository.arizona.edu/handle/10150/641064 You can borrow Artful Lives by Beth Gates Warren online here: https://archive.org/details/artfullivesedwar0000warr/page/n7/mode/2up We also recommend: Margrethe Mather & Edward Weston; A Passionate Collaboration also by Beth Gates Warren. Portland photographer Intisar Abioto's work is showing in two galleries. The exhibition at the Art Gallery at The Patricia Reser Center for the Arts in Beaverton showcases her own pieces and those of the other women artists in her family. She's also part of the Oregon Contemporary show in Portland. The historic Cannady home in NE Portland is the subject of one of these installations. People working to elevate Black history say this residence that once belonged to Black activist and civil leader Beatrice Morrow Cannady is a place that should be recognized as historically and culturally significant. Intisar Abioto said, not only that, but when she learned it was for sale earlier this year, she thought it could be reclaimed by the Black community as a place to gather, organize and create art.She spearheaded an effort to buy the property. Abioto worked with other artists, Black political leaders, business owners, historians, activists and someone who volunteered to finance a backup offer on the $1,135,000 home. The sellers didn't accept the offer, but Abioto says there are still valuable lessons to be learned from both Beatrice Cannady's history in Portland, and the story of the community effort to buy her home. She joins us to talk about art, history and the present moment, and how this experience synthesizes all three.

Rona brain be damned we had a fun episode tonight chatting it out with @travis_cannady the creator of @betteroffzine and all-around film wizard. He shared how he got started with film and his experiences being a living dip dunk machine processing films for lots of folks in Northern California. We got into aspects of social media, what's been going on with Instagram, and some thoughts around the up-and-coming Grainery app. He also got into his zine making, some of the projects and challenges he has had in the wild world of zines. He has a few projects coming out so make sure to check out the links in his bio to stay abreast of things.“Travis Cannady is a photographer born and raised in Sacramento, California. He studied Fine Arts at American River College from 2012 - 2017. This is where he found his love and appreciation for film photography while working in the darkroom. While not limiting himself to any one genre of photography, the current focus of his work is on documenting the mundane of everyday life. Other than photography, Travis has found a passion for zines. That includes collecting them from other photographers and making zines of his own work. Also at the beginning of 2021, Travis wanted to share this passion for zine making by starting a new film photography publication in a printed format called Better Off Zine. These zines feature work from a different photographer in each issue with the goal of giving an opportunity for photographers in this ever-growing film community to share their work and to make it accessible to as many people as possible.”Follow Travis at https://www.instagram.com/travis_cannady/Check out Better of Zine https://www.instagram.com/betteroffzine/Photography Chat is a weekly Instagram Live @merlindb hosts every Thursday at 5pmPST/8pmESTGive me a follow if you want to see the episodes live https://www.instagram.com/merlindb/Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/photographychat/donations

On a seemingly mundane Monday afternoon in February of 2021, a 911 call summoned police to an unassuming two-story brick home in Ambridge, Pennsylvania. On the front porch, officers found 48-year-old Krisinda Bright waiting for them, covered in what she freely admitted was the blood of two of her children: 16-year-old JJ Bright and 22-year-old Jasmine Cannady, both of whom were inside the home, dead from apparent gunshot wounds to the head.JJ, a transgender boy who socially transitioned at age 12, and Jasmine, who identified as nonbinary and used they/them pronouns, have been consistently misgendered by most media outlets from the start, and JJ has been deadnamed in news articles more times than I can count. In life, they deserved the respect of being referred to by their preferred pronouns and JJ by his chosen name; in death, the very least we can do is remember them with dignity and respect, the way they both deserve. This is the tragic story of Jasmine Cannady and JJ Bright.Links discussed in this episode:Remembering Jasmine Cannady And Jj/jeffrey Bright Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1131134003974889 PRISM Beaver County: https://www.facebook.com/prismlgbtqyouth/ NAMI Beaver County: https://www.namikeystonepa.org/discover-nami/find-your-local-nami/beaver-county-pa/ The Human Rights Campaign: https://hrc.org The Trevor Project: https://www.thetrevorproject.org/ Transgender Homicide Tracker: http://hrc.im/GunViolence Photos related to today's episode can be viewed on Facebook and Instagram:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpodInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpodYou can also follow the podcast on: Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/c/sufferthelittlechildrenpodcast Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/STLCpodTumblr: https://www.tumblr.com/blog/sufferthelittlechildrenpodPinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/sufferthelittlechildrenpodTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@STLCpod My Linktree is available here: https://linktr.ee/stlcpod Visit the podcast's web page at https://www.sufferthelittlechildrenpod.com. A ground-breaking volume examining the transnational conditions of the European Enlightenment, Crafting Enlightenment: Artisanal Histories and Transnational Networks (Voltaire Foundation, 2021) argues that artisans of the long eighteenth-century on four different continents created and disseminated ideas that revolutionized how we understand modern-day craftsmanship, design, labor, and technology. Starting in Europe, this book journeys through France across the Atlantic Ocean to the Americas and then on to Asia and Oceania. Highlighting diverse identities of artisans, the authors trace how these historical actors formed networks at local and global levels to assert their own forms of expertise and experience. These artisans – some anonymous, eminent, and outside the margins – translated European Enlightenment thinking into a number of disciplines and trades including architecture, botany, ceramics, construction, furniture, gardening, horology, interior design, manuscript illustration, and mining. In each thematic section of this illustrated volume, two leading scholars present contrasting case studies of artisans in different geographic contexts. These paired chapters are also followed by shorter commentary that reflects on pertinent themes from both chapters. Emphasizing how and why artisanal histories around the world impacted civic and private life, commerce, cultural engagement, and sense of place, this book introduces new richness and depth to the conversations around the ambivalent and fragmented nature of the Enlightenment. Lauren R. Cannady, assistant clinical professor in University Honors at the University of Maryland, is a historian of early modern art and architecture with an interest in intellectual and cultural history.  Jennifer Ferng is Senior Lecturer in Architecture and Postgraduate Director at the University of Sydney. Zach Cannady is the driving force behind Prema Farm, overseeing a small organic farm in Long Valley just twenty minutes north of Reno. Along with four employees, he cultivates just over an acre of farmland along with three greenhouses. He estimates his team produce senough food to feed 600 to 800 families in the summer. “I hope to be a hub for inspiration,” Cannady said on a recent Fall day, inside one of his 3,000 square feet greenhouses filled with several hundred seedlings, almost ready to go into the ground for the winter growing season. As a pillar of the community, Cannady has been donating food to a local chapter of Food Not Bombs since early April. Food Not Bombs is a group of community members using direct action to build community networks and civilian solidarity through the preparation and donation of nutritious food. Cannady feels the mission of Food Not Bombs aligns with the driving philosophy of Prema Farms. “I think that working with them as people and just seeing them in action does a wonderful amount of good. It's really about getting food directly to people that need it and that's why we choose to work with them,” Cannady said On Saturdays, Cannady can be found at the Riverside market in downtown Reno.
