The Dubliner, Thomas Moore, born in 1779 was a poet, composer, musician, and writer. He is most famous for the 10 volume work "Irish Melodies" published between 1807 and 1834 with Sir John Stevenson, which consists of 130 of his poems set to music, much of it based on old Irish airs. "The Last Rose of Summer" and "The Minstrel Boy" are two of the most well known. Many of these "Melodies" are included in this collection. He is perhaps most infamous for having burned, at the request of the Byron family, the manuscript of Byron's memoirs which Bryon had left to him for publication after his death. During his lifetime, his reputation as a poet placed him alongside Byron and Scott and Shelly. His narrative poem Lalla Rookh for example was possibly the most translated poem of the time and earned him £3000, what was till then the highest price paid by an English publisher for a poem. This collection contains a version of the poem but without the linking or "framing" prose sections. A lovely edition of the full poem can be found here https://archive.org/details/lallrookhanorien00mooruoft with illustrations by Sir John Tenniel. Moore was an Irish Nationalist and turned down the post of "Irish Poet Laureate" as he felt it would require him to tone down his outspoken Irish national politics. Despite this, he counted the Regent - later King George IV as one of his patrons. Moore died on February 25, 1852 and though much of his work is now neglected, his enduring legacy is that his "Melodies" which were translated into practically every European language popularized Irish Music throughout the world.Part IIntroduction   Irish Melodies - Part 1 Irish Melodies - Part 2 Irish Melodies - Part 3 Part IIIrish Melodies - Part 4 National Airs  Sacred Songs   Early Poems, Ballads and Songs - Part 1 Early Poems, Ballads and Songs - Part 2 Early Poems, Ballads and Songs - Part 3 Part IIIPoems Relating to America    Lalla Rookh: The Veiled Prophet of Khorassan   Lalla Rookh: Paradise and the Peri    Lalla Rookh: The Fire-Worshipers     Part IVLalla Rookh: The Light of the Harem   The Loves of the Angels Satirical And Humorous Poems - Part 1  Satirical And Humorous Poems - Part 2: The Fudge Family in Paris     Satirical And Humorous Poems - Part 3: Fables for the Holy Alliance   Satirical And Humorous Poems - Part 4  Part VSatirical And Humorous Poems - Part 5  Miscellaneous Poems   Odes of Anacreon     Epigram - Around the Tomb, O Bard Divine  Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Producer/Host: R.W. Estela Hi, I'm RW Estela: Since 1991, I've been presenting A Word in Edgewise, WERU's longest-running short feature, a veritable almanac of worldly and heavenly happenings, a confluence of 21st-century life in its myriad manifestations, international and domestic, cosmopolitan and rural, often revealing, as the French say, the more things change, the more they stay the same — though not always! Sometimes in addressing issues affecting our day-to-day lives, in this age of vagary and ambiguity, when chronological time is punctuated elliptically, things can quickly turn edgy and controversial, as we search for understanding amid our dialectic. Tune in Monday mornings at 7:30 a.m. for an exciting journey through space and time with a few notable birthdays thrown in for good measure during A Word in Edgewise . . . About the host: RW Estela was raised as a first-generation American in Colorado by a German mother and a Corsican-Basque father who would become a three-war veteran for the US Army, so RW was naturally a military brat and later engaged in various Vietnam-era civil-service adventures before paying his way through college by skiing for the University of Colorado, playing Boulder coffeehouses, and teaching. He has climbed all of Colorado's Fourteeners; found work as an FAA-certificated commercial pilot, a California-licensed building contractor, a publishing editor, a practitioner of Aikido, and a college professor of English; among his many interdisciplinary pursuits are the design and building of Terrell Residence Library (recently renamed the Terrell House Permaculture Living & Learning Center at the University of Maine), writing Building It In Two Languages (a bilingual dictionary of construction terminology), aerial photo documentation of two dam removals (Great Works and Veazie) on the Penobscot River, and once a week since 1991 drafting an installment of A Word In Edgewise, his essay series addressing issues affecting our day-to-day lives — and WERU's oldest continuous short feature. When pandemics do not interfere, he does the Triple Crown of Maine open-water ocean swims (Peaks to Portland, Islesboro Crossing, and Nubble Light Challenge) and the Whitewater Downriver Point Series of the Maine Canoe and Kayak Racing Organization. RW is the father of two and the grandfather of three and lives with his partner Kathleen of 37 years and their two Maine Coons in Orono. The post A Word in Edgewise 9/18/23: Of the Last Rose of Summer & Greta Garbo . . . first appeared on WERU 89.9 FM Blue Hill, Maine Local News and Public Affairs Archives.

The novelist Monte Schulz released his first novel, Down by the River, in 1990. He then spent more than twelve years writing the Jazz Age-based novel, Crossing Eden, for his father, the late, extraordinarily influential cartoonist, the creator of Peanuts, Charles M. Schulz. The book was initially released in three smaller volumes called This Side of Jordan, The Last Rose of Summer, and The Big Town.            Monte's latest novel, Metropolis, is a grand dystopian tale in a time of war, with a blossoming romance throughout. I've read Metropolis and can tell you it's a powerful and intense journey through a world into which I hope we never find ourselves. If you enjoy marvelously epic storytelling, I highly recommend you read Metropolis.            Since 2010, Monte has been the owner of the Santa Barbara Writers Conference and has taught a class in voice and style both there and at UC Santa Barbara.            He's also a composer/songwriter with an album out worldwide: “Seraphonium – After Many a Summer.”

The Last Rose of SummerThomas Moore - 1779-1852‘Tis the last rose of Summer, Left blooming alone; All her lovely companions Are faded and gone;No flower of her kindred, No rose-bud is nigh,To reflect back her blushes Or give sigh for sigh!I'll not leave thee, thou lone one, To pine on the stem;Since the lovely are sleeping, Go sleep thou with them. Thus kindly I scatter Thy leaves o'er the bedWhere thy mates of the garden Lie scentless and dead.So soon may I follow, When friendships decay,And from Love's shining circle The gems drop away! When true hearts lie withered, And fond ones are flown,Oh! who would inhabit This bleak world alone?Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/thewanderingpaddy. On March 6, 2004, Thomas Pierce, his wife, JoAnn, and his daughter Lisa were on the water taxi that overturned in Baltimore's Inner Harbor. He lost both of them that day. Pierce's account of the accident and the letter to Lisa written by one of the reservists that rescued her give the reader a grim understanding of what that day was like. But this is not a book about the accident-this is a book about the power of love. Love as we know it and understand it, and love that goes beyond our understanding. This is a book Pierce never intended to write, but he felt compelled to share the things that carried him through this tragedy and all the signs that helped him move on with his life. It is truly a celebration of two lives that will go on forever. Once you have read this book you will find yourself passing it on to friends and family, so that they too can share the experience of the power of love. - www.thelastrose.com******************************************************************To listen to all our XZBN shows, with our compliments go to: https://www.spreaker.com/user/xzoneradiotv*** AND NOW ***The ‘X' Zone TV Channel on SimulTV - www.simultv.comThe ‘X' Chronicles Newspaper - www.xchroniclesnewpaper.com

Weina stops by to talk about her bestselling novel The Last Rose of Shanghai. I've read a lot of World War II fiction and this is a look at that war from a whole new angle from the setting of Shanghai. A love story at it's core between a Chinese woman who defies society and family  constraints to run a night club and a Jewish refugee who is caring for his sister and plays jazz piano in night clubs. It's also a novel about survival and what these characters will do to make it to safety.  It's totally epic in scope - lots of heartache This is a must-read for people who love World War II fiction and readers who love historical novels set in different locations.

When she hires Ernest to play piano at her club, her defiance of custom causes a sensation. His instant fame makes Aiyi's club once again the hottest spot in Shanghai. Soon they realize they share more than a passion for jazz—but their differences seem insurmountable, and Aiyi is engaged to another man. As the war escalates, Aiyi and Ernest find themselves torn apart, and their choices between love and survival grow more desperate. In the face of overwhelming odds, a chain of events is set in motion that will change both their lives forever. On this Buckeye ReTalkables on Buckeye Talk, Doug Lesmerises and Nathan Baird once again go back into the 1970s. This time, it's to end the 1975 season, as Woody Hayes in his final Rose Bowl, Archie Griffin in his final game and the No. 1 and undefeated Ohio State Buckeyes take on 15-point underdog UCLA in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1, 1976.This is a warning, Buckeye Talk listeners -- this might be the toughest loss of Hayes' 28 years with the Buckeyes.Featuring Griffin, Pete Johnson and Cornelius Green, Ohio State was propelled all season by the best backfield in the country, and maybe of the last three decades in college football. But the highest-scoring offense in the country couldn't get rolling in a 23-10 loss to the Bruins.Listen as Doug and Nathan recap all the categories, from the big plays to the stars of the game to how Hayes reacted after the loss. This game was closer than the score indicated, and even though it's a tough loss, the game offers a lot to learn about Ohio State's relationship to the Rose Bowl, Hayes' coaching style and weird 1970s commercials. We hope you enjoy another Buckeye ReTalkables from cleveland.com. In this episode we are joined by guest scholar, Dr. Karali Hunter, as we discuss the cross-sections between literary and musical Romanticism, particularly in the context of romantic themes, such as breaking away from rigid form and structure, evoking emotion, and embracing the individual and national voices of the period. Dr. Hunter has a DMA in piano performance from Arizona State University. She is an award-winning performer and pedagogue as well as owner and founder of Hammer & Strings Conservatory. She has performed at Carnegie Hall and continues as an active performer, as a founding artist of the chamber group, Salonnières. Tis the last rose of summer Left blooming alone; All her lovely companions Are faded and gone; No flower of her kindred, No rosebud is nigh, To reflect back her blushes, Or give sigh for sigh. I'll not leave thee, thou lone one! To pine on the stem; Since the lovely are sleeping, Go, sleep thou with them. Thus kindly I scatter Thy leaves o'er the bed, Where thy mates of the garden Lie scentless and dead. So soon may I follow, When friendships decay, And from Love's shining circle The gems drop away. When true hearts lie withered And fond ones are flown, Oh! who would inhabit This bleak world alone?

- www.thelastrose.com

If you would like to hear it, you can vist the YouTube site and view both episodes. I will be using my Bluetooth so I also appoligize for the audio quality. I am in search of equipment that will resolve this problem! On to today's episode...If you were given the last rose in all the world, how would you treat it? Would you toss it in the yard and forget about it? Would you over water it? Would you talk to it? What would you do? Today's walk is a walk through a very special garden where we will not only stop and smell the roses, but learn how to help our garden grow! Adelina Patti had a warm, crystalline, and very agile high soprano voice.[10] Her vocal emission was of perfect equality and her vocal range was wide, from low C to high F (C4 - F6).[10] Regarding her technique, critic Rodolfo Celletti said, "Her voice was a technical marvel. The staccatos were marvels of accuracy, even in the trickiest intervals, her legato was impressively smooth and pure; she connects the voice from note to note, phrase to phrase, lifting and gliding with an exceptional virtuosity. Her chromatic scale was deliciously sweet, and her trill was wonderful and solid."[11]   Adelina Patti 1905 recordings. A sensational singer, even at age 62. The selections are as follows: Voi lo sapete, Pur dicesti, Old folks at home,Batti, batti, Jewel song,Il Bacio, Last Rose of Summer, Ave maria (Bach-Gounod), Robin Adair, Home sweet home, Si vous n'avez rien a me dire, Comin' thrpugh the rye, Banks of Allen Water, On parting, 'Twas within a mile, New Year message to her hisband, Baron Rolf Cederstrom, Kathleen, La Serenata, Casta Diva, Connais tu le pays, Ah non credea.  (65 min.)
