“I would argue that the movies, the plays, the stories that endure and certainly that resonate in the most populist and global way are the ones where we're not just observing a piece of storytelling, we're participative in some way and it's connective. How can any of us who are flawed humans connect with a flawless hero? The beauty of Wade [Deadpool] and Logan [Wolverine] is that really, they're two anti-heroes. They do not abide by typical moral codes. They both have been scarred deeply. And I think one thing that's really interesting about them is that the worst thing that's ever happened to them is also the source of their superpowers. Which I think, by the way, is something worth thinking about in all our lives – that the things that we had to get over are also the source of our strength,” says writer/director of Deadpool & Wolverine Shawn Levy.  In this episode, we discuss the elements that Levy thinks make a great hero and also a powerful villain like Cassandra Nova (Emma Corrin).  “There was something really juicy about [Cassandra's] twinship with Charles Xavier, that this villain is a new villain who has never been in a movie, who has never been anywhere other than the pages of a Marvel comic book. But there is this connective tissue to deep beloved, extensive mythology with Professor X and Charles. So we did lean into her resentment, her envy of Charles. You know, I think maybe one of my favorite couplets of our writing in this movie is when Cassandra says to Wolverine, ‘He must have really loved you.' And he says to Cassandra, ‘He would have loved you too. He would have torn a hole in the universe if he knew where you were.' But if controversial Marvel Entertainment Chairman Isaac Perlmutter had his way eight years ago, Feige would have been out. Newly-reinstated Disney CEO Bob Iger claims that Perlmutter wanted to remove Feige as the president of Marvel Studios back in 2015. However, Iger intervened on Feige's behalf and prevented this from happening.   Marvel fans have heard a version of this story before. In 2020, Mark Ruffalo told The Independent that Feige was ready to walk away from the studio of his own free will after the first Avengers movie hit theaters in 2012. Because apparently, Perlmutter (who still oversaw Marvel's film projects at the time) shot down Feige's ideas to make the MCU a more inclusive space for female, Black, and LGBT superheroes. It wasn't until 2015 that corporate restructuring took Perlmutter out of the equation and allowed Feige to directly report to then-Disney chairman Alan Horn. This paved the way for films like Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and Eternals to finally get the green light.   However, the bit about Perlmutter actually trying to oust Feige from the studio is brand new information. Iger dropped this bombshell while speaking with CNBC about Wendy's Company chairman Nelson Peltz's recently-failed bid to get a seat on Disney's board, which Perlmutter supported. I don't want to say too much because there's not a whole lot out there in the world, but it feels very grounded, it feels very spiritual in ways that feel fresh for us. [Alaqua Cox] as the lead is incredibly compelling. I'm sort of hard-pressed to think of something that it feels like outside in the broader realm of the MCU, let alone within what we've done here. “Logan” is clearly the best solo Wolverine movie ever, but “Days of Future Past” is arguably the best overall X-Men movie thus far, and it could never have achieved its critical and financial success without Hugh Jackman’s Logan/Wolverine front and center with the great young X-Men including James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, and Nicholas Holt. This week Sarah Mason and Jake Essoe review Logan for The HMC Network's Now Playing Reviews. Hugh Jackman reprises his role as Logan/Wolverine for the last time in this darker, grittier X-Men universe film. Set in the not so distant future, 2029, the world is looking pretty bleak for Logan (Hugh Jackman) and Charles Xavier (Sir Patrick Stewart) last surviving mutants. The once powerful leaders of the X-Men are weak and vulnerable suffering a mundane human existence. Logan is showing the effects of adamantium poisoning which has slowly been taking away his healing powers. Charles, suffering from a form of dementia is dependent on Logan and another surviving mutant Caliban (Stephen Merchant) for care and medicine which has become necessary for more than his safety as his disease as certified his brain to be a weapon of mass destruction. Logan seems content in his miserable existence, driving a limousine and popping pills, until a mysterious little girl drags him into one last heroic venture. Unlike any of it's franchise predecessors, Logan is extremely dark with more of an apocalyptic Road Warrior feel to it. It is the first R rated film of the X-Men franchise making us wonder why they all didn't do the same. Thanks to the success of 2016's Deadpool, also R Rated, and now the success of Logan ($85m opening weekend), look for Hollywood to start slowly opening the gates on R rated super hero films. In the case of Logan, the freedom to go balls out opens up a whole new dimension for the character(s) -- Dr. X dropping F bombs? Yes! It's the Wolverine we wish we had seen before, no implied destruction, actual visual confirmation of it. Thank you! Finally. Don't count on a Marvel happy super hero ending, this film has way more soul. Much justice. Logan is in theaters now.
