For Those Who Didn't Attend, Here's What You Missed at Cranky Dorkfest This Weekend Aviation News Marines score aviation firsts with F-35 squadron, drone test and more A Marine Corps XQ-58A Valkyrie drone completed a test flight last week at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida. Col. Derek Brannon, branch head for the Cunningham Group, deputy commandant for aviation said “The flight focused on the use of tactical data links to enable digital communication between the XQ-58A and an airborne four-ship of F-35Bs from Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 214 and other joint aircraft.” XQ-58A Valkyrie, courtesy AFRL. The XQ-58A Valkyrie is a low-cost, high-performance, reusable unmanned air vehicle developed through an Air Force Research Laboratory partnership with Kratos Defense & Security Solutions, Inc. This vehicle is an example of an “attritable” aircraft designed to be used for several missions, but built at a cost that permits it to be a combat loss. American Airlines' longest flight set to be one of the most tracked in the world The American Airlines inaugural flight from Dallas to Brisbane in Australia was heavily followed on Flightradar24. Director of Communications Ian Petchenik said people worldwide “are especially keen to watch the livestream of the landing.” The Boeing 787-9 (N825AA), flight AA7, made the trip in 15 hours and 44 minutes covering a great circle distance of 13,363 KM. Overworked Private Flight Attendants For Co-Founder of The Home Depot Claim ‘Inept' Colleagues Kept Their Jobs Because They Were in ‘Romantic Relationship' With Boss Two private flight attendants filed a lawsuit claiming they were overworked while working for the co-founder of The Home Depot, while “inept” co-workers had romantic relationships with their bosses. The two FAs, who quit their jobs, said they sometimes worked 26 days per month and around 90 hours per week. Why It's Harder Getting to China As a result of the war in Ukraine, non-Chinese airlines are no longer entering Russian airspace, so some are discontinuing service to China, or reducing frequency. Demand for flights to China is down, and the cost of avoiding Russian airspace in time and fuel is significant. Virgin Atlantic is dropping its flight connecting Shanghai to London, LOT Polish Airlines is suspending its Warsaw-to-Beijing flights, and SAS plans to stop direct flights between Copenhagen and Shanghai. Chinese airlines are adding capacity. PFAS-free firefighting foam coming to jetport The Portland (Maine) Fire Department plans to replace the AFFF firefighting foam used at the Portland International Jetport with PFAS-free foam.

The demand for sustainable mobility is growing rapidly while at the same time, the fight against climate change and atmospheric pollution has emerged as one of the paramount challenges for the European transportation sector. According to the EU Sustainable & Smart Mobility Strategy, the gradual change and modernization of European transportation should give way to a fundamental transformation. The scenarios presented in the EC's strategy, aligned with those supporting the 2030 climate target plan, suggest that—with the right level of ambition—the combination of policy measures detailed in this strategy can achieve a 90% reduction in transport sector emissions by 2050.Air transport is increasingly perceived as one of the key carbon-intensive sectors. It's often labelled a hard-to-abate industry, primarily because of technological limitations that make it difficult to directly reduce carbon emissions. The recently adopted EU policy measures and regulations, intended to make transport more sustainable, have established a stringent framework for the aviation value chain. In the absence of revolutionary net-zero aviation fuel and propulsion technologies, the aviation sector faces a monumental task to achieve the carbon dioxide emission targets set by the European Green Deal, among other EU strategies and policies.Currently, the largest infrastructure project in Europe is being built in Poland - Centralny Port Komunikacyjny. CPK is a planned multi-modal transport and interchange hub that will integrate air, rail and road transport in the region. As part of the project, a new airport and a major rail hub will be built in the centre of Poland, connecting CPK with the rest of the country and other European countries via newly constructed high-speed railway lines. In its commitment to combating climate change and fostering a shared green future, CPK has embedded sustainability into its investment programme from the very beginning. The aim is to transform the mobility industry in Poland and Central and Eastern Europe. Highly ambitious climate mitigation and pollution reduction targets have been set during the planning and design phases, positioning CPK to become the first "Net-Zero Ready" airport in the region upon its inauguration. This undertaking aims to set new standards for green airports globally. This unique sustainable strategy will be showcased by CPK in collaboration with LOT Polish Airlines at the event titled "Sustainable Journey: Navigating the Future of Aviation". The presentation, which will bring together representatives from the European Commission, CPK (the new Polish airport investor and its future operator), LOT (the Polish national air carrier), IATA (The International Air Transport Association), and industry experts, will culminate in a panel discussion. This debate will focus on ensuring European aviation's sustainability without undermining its global competitiveness and will also contemplate potential solutions, opportunities, and recent proofs of concept.Organised by: CPKMedia Partner: Euractiv

Today's episode is a listener request! In the late 1980s, a flaming passenger plane fell from the sky near Warsaw, Poland. Unlike many crashes, all 183 souls on board had already been fully aware of their impending death for over ten minutes. Pandemonium had broken out in the passenger cabin as they try to flee the fire, and inside the cockpit, the pilots screamed their last, chilling words to air traffic control. What is everyone doing inside that plane, knowing that death is just around the corner? What led to this plane becoming engulfed in flames? Tune in this week as Caroline and Trevor tell the story of Poland's deadliest air disaster.

While my podcast seems to highlight some negatives about aircraft safety, planes are actually very safe and durable. Today's podcast highlights how planes don't really need landing gear. And while planes often don't have to land with no landing gear, it does happen sometimes. That's what happened with LOT Polish Airlines flight 16. A seemingly dire hydraulic failure lead to a heroic outcome. Listen on to hear what happened to LOT Polish Airlines flight 16. Like what you hear? Then consider giving the podcast Instagram a follow for more podcast and aviation related content. @whatwentwrong_podcast Credits: The Flight Channel

Issued on the 10th June, Poland is to open its borders with EU countries as of June 13, and international flights within Europe will be relaunched from June 17. Among the many airlines resuming flights today, LOT Polish Airlines won’t be one of them, the airline previously stated all international flight operations will be suspended until 30th June, while a few international long-haul charter flights has been operated spontaneously as part of the evacuation mission to help stranded Polish citizens return home. The biggest airlines in Europe: Lufthansa, Air France and KLM will all be resuming flights today from Poland’s Capital Warsaw to Frankfurt, Munich, Paris Charles de Gaulle and Amsterdam. Other airlines including the low-cost carrier Wizz Air will resume services today as well to 13 European destinations including London Luton, Budapest, Sandefjord Torp and Rome. As the flag carrier of Poland, LOT Polish Airlines hasn’t come out with a statement just yet on when will they resume regular international flights. The airline’s current domestic network schedule is planned to run until June 19th with limited capacities, so it’s likely more information will be updated from the airline. Poland will relaunch international flights, but noted that carriers “will probably need a week, or two or three, to prepare a flight-connection network.” Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki Commented On June 16 Ryanair, the Irish low-cost airline is planning flight resumption of almost 200 routes to and from Poland from July 1st. After a long period of suspension due to the Covid-19 pandemic in Poland. Base on Poland is one of the most important low-cost market for the airline, the airline is eager to resume much of its network as soon as possible. Lufthansa is resuming once daily service to its hub in Frankfurt and Munich today, confirmed by the airline, the airline is expecting full flights today with a high load factor in the coming days as well, as many passengers are eager to enter or exit the country through the strong connection network available through them. Other major airlines like Air France and KLM are also resuming flights today, though only Warsaw is seeing a huge increase of international flights today, but more are expected for other airports in Poland as carriers slowly goes back to normal operations.
Show #751 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 17th April 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. PLUG-IN HYBRID TECHNOLOGY IN MORE THAN 20 MERCEDES-BENZ MODELS "There will be more than 20 Mercedes-Benz models with EQ Power by the end of 2020, the company pledges, starting with the A-Class all the way to the S-Class luxury saloon, SUVs included." reports MercedesBlog: "Furthermore, the relatively large lithium-ion batteries provide purely electric driving enough for most daily journeys. EQ Power system integrates the 1.33-liter 4-cylinder engine of 218 horsepower, developed in partnership with the Renault-Nissan Alliance. A lithium-ion battery supplied by Daimler’s subisidary Deutsche Accumotive, featuring a capacity of approximately 15.6 kWh." There's also a larger battery variant of 31.2kWh compatible with the COMBO vehicle socket using AC and DC. They only give the recharging time of 20 minutes to get from 10% to 80%. So that's 21.8kWh, assuming that first figure is usable. To get that energy into the battery in 20 mins, divide by 20 mins and multiply by 60 mins, looks like 65kW charge speed. Very rough maths! https://media.daimler.com/marsMediaSite/en/instance/ko/EQ-Power--plug-in-hybrid-technology-taken-one-step-further-Sustainable-efficient-dynamic-Plug-in-hybrids-as-a-technology-that-pays-off.xhtml?oid=46161870 NISSAN LEAF CROWNED BRITAIN’S MOST ICONIC ELECTRIC CAR "A DrivingElectric survey of more than 700 people has revealed the Nissan Leaf as the most recognisable electric vehicle on sale. Now in its second generation and celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2020, the Leaf is also the world’s best-selling electric car to date." according to Driving Electric: "Of the survey respondents, 94% recognised the Leaf, with the Tesla Model S finishing a close second. The Jaguar I-Pace climbed the ladder to third place in this year’s round-up, pushing Tesla’s Model X into fourth – one place lower than before. The BMW i3 completed the top five, with the MINI Electric – new for this year’s table – in sixth. As well as revealing the most recognisable electric cars, the survey asked respondents which manufacturers they thought were leading the charge with electric vehicle adoption. Tesla topped both of these categories, with Nissan and Jaguar completing the podium." https://www.drivingelectric.com/electric-car-survey HONDA HYBRID AND EV BATTERIES TO BE USED IN NEW RECYCLING INITIATIVE "Honda Motor Europe is expanding its battery recycling partnership with SNAM (Société Nouvelle d’Affinage des Métaux) to advance the sustainable usability of its end-of-life traction batteries." says Renewable Energy Magazine: "The pan-European arrangement will see SNAM collect and recycle batteries from Honda's increasing number of hybrid and electric vehicles and either potentially prepare them for 'second-life' renewable energy storage uses or extract valuable materials for recycling if they are not suitable for that purpose. Dealers can arrange and request the collection of end-of-life batteries for treatment and recycling through SNAM's dedicated online platform. Collection can be arranged from centralised storage hubs within 15 working days, so that dealers do not have to store batteries at their premises." https://www.renewableenergymagazine.com/electric_hybrid_vehicles/honda-hybrid-and-ev-batteries-to-be-20200416 LONDON CAB MAKER LEVC READIES PLUG-IN VAN "London black-cab maker LEVC aims to start production of its plug-in hybrid light commercial van in November ahead of sales next year, the Geely-owned company has said." writes Automotive News Europe: "The van, called VN5, uses the same platform and drivetrain as the TX5 taxi and will rival Ford's plug-in hybrid Transit Custom, which has already gone on sale LEVC is banking on cities getting tougher on air quality and forcing delivery companies out of traditional diesel vans. The van will use 65 percent of the same parts as the taxi, LEVC said, and will be built on the same production line in Coventry. The high cost of the drivetrain with its 31 kWh battery and 1.5-liter Volvo-sourced three-cylinder range-extender engine is expected to make the van significantly more expensive than conventional rivals in the one-ton, midsize van segment." https://europe.autonews.com/latest-launches/london-cab-maker-levc-readies-plug-van TATA NEXON EV NOW INDIA’S HIGHEST SELLING ELECTRIC CAR "The next most accessible electric car in India happens to be the Tata Nexon EV. Tata launched the Nexon EV earlier this year and the response so far has been good. In a somber March, Tata managed to sell 198 Nexon EVs. In comparison, MG Motors managed to sell 116 units of the much more expensive and bigger ZS EV." reports Financial Express. It is an exception to the country’s strict measures to contain the coronavirus outbreak." according to the Korea Herald: "According to LG Chem, the company will dispatch some 200 employees on a special LOT Polish Airlines flight Friday to the construction site in Wroclaw, Poland, to restart the work to expand the plant. LG Chem is currently planning to double its EV battery production capacity this year in Europe to 60 GWh, which is enough to power 1 million EVs. To facilitate the immediate deployment of essential personnel, the Polish government is expected to waive its two-week quarantine requirement for LG Chem employees who have tested negative for COVID-19 in Korea. The Polish government has closed the country’s borders until May 3, but made this exception because disruptions in EV battery production could hurt European automakers including Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, Audi and Renault." http://www.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20200416000739 LEXUS NX TRADEMARK MIGHT HINT AT PLUG-IN HYBRID MODEL TO COME "A Mach E Club forum user posted trademarks Lexus filed in Europe surrounding the NX, but one of them is very interesting: an NX 450h Plus. For those who don't speak Lexus nomenclature, the "h" stands for "hybrid" but the "Plus" is something new." says CNET: "It could be that the plus designation means there's more going on with the hybrid system, perhaps a plug-in hybrid powertrain. It's the best theory for now since we only have previous Lexus names to go on. The brand declined to comment on future product. Should the NX 450h Plus come to life as a plug-in hybrid, there's a possibility it could share the Toyota RAV4 Prime's powertrain. The plug-in hybrid RAV4 makes 302 horsepower, boasts 90 miles per gallon equivalent and should go 39 miles on a full charge." https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/lexus-nx-toyota-rav4-plug-in-hybrid-platform-range/ THE SOUNDTRACK TO AN ELECTRIC CAR "when a driver starts up his or her electric-powered BMW i4 sedan later this year or next, Hans Zimmer will be riding shotgun, so to speak, creating a sonic signature for the car, because electric motors make little sound." reports The New York Times: "In the United States, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration adopted rules in 2018 that say electric cars must make some artificial sounds. Congress made it a requirement that light-duty hybrids and electrics emit noise as a safety measure for pedestrians, bicyclists and people with a visual impairment. The European Parliament has mandated that electrics sold in Europe will have to “sound similar” to cars with combustion engines at speeds below 20 kilometers an hour. The rule is to take full effect in 2021. He explained that, in his view, the “BMW IconicSounds Electric” commission was more about deleting than adding. “Too much information would automatically be distracting,” he said. “If you look at the great pieces of art, it’s usually the simplicity that makes them great.”" https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/16/business/bmw-i4-hans-zimmer.html VIRUS COULD CAUSE MORE CAR TRAVEL "Earlier this year, daily highway vehicle traffic volumes in China were lower than they had been a year earlier thanks to reduced activity during lockdown. By early March, however, China’s daily traffic was consistently above that of a year before. Car-buying in Wuhan, the original epicenter of Covid-19 and the first city to be sealed off to prevent its spread, has also rebounded. As an Audi AG sales representative said, “It’s like a boom after a two-month dormancy. I thought sales would be frozen.”" according to Bloomberg: "Covid-19 has brought about changes that urban planners once only dreamed about. The city of Oakland, California has designated 74 miles of neighborhood streets for “bikes, pedestrians, wheelchair users, and local vehicles only.” New Zealand’s transport minister has announced the country will provide funding for 90% of the cost of pop-up cycleways and footpaths. This is our present moment in transport. But it won’t last forever. When we exit our however-long-it-will-be of weekdays that feel like Sundays, people will start moving again. China’s example suggests that personal car traffic will more than rebound–and that public transit will not." https://business.financialpost.com/pmn/business-pmn/transport-after-the-virus-will-be-more-cars-fewer-trains QUESTION OF THE WEEK How can the EV industry help people get into driving electric cars as soon as this is all over? #70 - The German government gave Condor 380 million euros to have cash and find a new buyer. The winner was PGL, the mother company of LOT Polish Airlines. 15th of April is the day when PGL or Condor have to pay the 380 million back, but PGL claims that Condor have to pay the consulting cost for the acquisition. They are doing it because of having not to pay the penalty for not taking over the airline in the end. Write us anytime on WhatsApp and we are happy to answer your questions.Subscribe to our podcast. #62 - After Thomas Cook went belly up, Condor was able with the help of a credit provided by the German government to survive. They have successfully search for a new owner and the white knight was PGL. PGL is the owner of LOT Polish Airlines and a state-owned company. Every airline is hit by COVID-19 now and especially LOT is in difficult times. As they are trying to get out of the contract to buy Condor, the German government wants to take the shares and give Condor a chance to find a new owner. What is your opinion on Condor?Write us anytime on WhatsApp and we are happy to answer your questions.Subscribe to our podcast. Mateusz is a Pole, employee of Iberia currently based in Texas but having lived also in Beijing, Madrid he considers himself a global citizen. And an avgeek/aviation enthusiast, too. Naturally major part of our discussion was about LOT Polish Airlines, their developments in 2019 and Mateusz commented also their future. We also touched how the flight shame movement is perceived in US and what Boeing´s new CEO´s major tasks are. This time the quote of the week is from Robin Hayes, CEO of JetBlue who commented their announcement towards carbon neutrality: “We reduce .where we can and offset where we can’t.”
#17 - The Lufthansa Miles & More Companion Award is one benefit of the Senator and HON Circle status. In my opinion it is one of the best ones. One of the best news is that this benefit will survive the changes in 2021. But what is the Lufthansa Miles & More Companion Award? Lufthansa Miles & More Companion Award reduces the amount of miles you need for your travel partner by 50%. Depending on the booking class the savings can be huge. You can book the award for flights operated by Austrian Airlines, Lufthansa, SWISS, Eurowings, Luxair, LOT Polish Airlines, Brussels Airlines and Croatia Airlines. There is no limit how often you can use Lufthansa Miles & More Companion Award, only your missing miles in the account can stop you.In order to use Lufthansa Miles & More Companion Award both tickets have to be reward tickets and both passengers must be traveling on the same flight and booking class. Lufthansa Miles & More Companion Award means that the Senator or HON Circle and the companion have to travel together. The tickets can only be canceled together.Fly Smart, Meilenschnäppchen (mileage bargains) and reward tickets for children cannot be used as Lufthansa Miles & More Companion Award.Write us anytime on WhatsApp and we are happy to answer your questions.Subscribe to our podcast. In this very special episode we bring you full interview with Rafal Milczarski, CEO & President of the management board of LOT Polish Airlines. He was interviewed by Aviation Development Director of AviaDev Europe Tony Hallwood, live on stage in Krakow at the ACI Europe Regional Conference and Exhibition 2019. Rafal shared his view on several different topics, including LOT´s attitude towards regional airports, their future growth plans and, of course, the prospects of Poland´s mega hub project: Central Airport and Railway Hub.
Number of passengers handled at Krakow Airport was almost doubled within last 5 years, 28 new routes were opened in 2017 and Krakow is one of the few regional/secondary airports in Europe with a year-round transatlantic route (to Chicago with LOT Polish Airlines). Pawel is explaining how this phenomenal growth was possible.
Mateusz Klimek, dedicated young network planner from Iberia was our guest this week. Truly passionate avgeek told us his incredible story from getting his first job at LOT Polish Airlines to developing a strategy for new exciting projects like Level. He also shared his view on the future of regional airports in Europe and what living in China taught him.
In this episode Andrzej outlines what daily work of a network planner includes. He also gaves some very valuable advice to young aviators how to land a job within the industry and shares best practice for regional airports - what should they include in their business cases in order to win a route.
In the last two years, Poland has expanded their presence here in Singapore. Just last week, LOT Polish Airlines established a direct flight connection between Warsaw and Singapore and it marks Singapore’s first non-stop link to Central and Eastern Europe. In The Hot Seat to tell us more is LOT's Chief Commercial Officer, Michal Fijol. He speaks with MONEY FM 89.3’s Yasmin Jonkers about how LOT Polish Airlines deals with competition in the airline business, and how technology is changing how an airline is run.
Reel45 Podcast with Greg Hancock and Stefan Juhnell - Speedway
We were invited to the inaugural launch of the LOT Polish Airlines flight from Rzeszow, Poland to Newark, NJ in the USA. First we attended Greg’s race with Stal Rzeszow against Rawicz on Sunday April 29th which they won and then joined this huge event at Rzeszow Airport at 9AM the following morning April 30th! Greg rode into the airport on a Harley provided by Game Over Cycles in Rzeszow and then joined Rzeszow Airport CEO Michal Tabisz on stage to make an official presentation to all the public and media that we would be joining the inaugural flight to Newark. This event was put together in a matter of 3 weeks and all handled by Michal Tabisz and his staff together with LOT Polish Airlines. What a fascinating individual he is. There is much more on the horizon but you have to hear this short interview with Michal live at the airport just 1 hour before we made the journey on the LOT boeing 787-8 Dreamliner. Stay tuned for more on this amazing journey.
