In this episode, the monthly series called “What Are the Sisters Reading” continues. For the month of March, Sister Julia Darrenkamp, FSP, shares about a book called "The Holiness of Ordinary People" by Madeleine Delbrêl. The book gathers together essays and notes written by Delbrêl, who was a French poet, social worker and lay missionary and has been declared Venerable by the Catholic Church, during her most active years, giving peerless insights into the distinctive lay vocation in the Church. All men and women—married and unmarried—must follow the Holy Spirit into all that is true in this world, from the small talk around the coffeepot to the great silence of the Holy Eucharist. Paus Franciscus sprak eerder met waardering over mystica Madeleine Delbrêl. What would you do in the place of Austrian farmer Franz Jägerstätter in 1943? Mumble your loyalty oath to Hitler like everyone else—or refuse and pay with your life? This martyr is a blessed in the Catholic Church and on the way to being canonized. He is also the subject of a transcendentally beautiful movie A Hidden life by Terrence Mallick in 2019. Pastor Brian Zahnd, author of the Wood Between the Worlds, talks about the man, the movie, and the martyrdom with me on Almost Good Catholics. There's a moment in our discussion where I say to Brian that, had I been in Franz's shoes, I think I would have just gone along with the oath so that I could get through my service as a soldier, perhaps as a conscientious objector, driving an ambulance or serving as a medical orderly. This choice seemed to make sense because I would have honored my obligation to my little children, to my wife, to my farm and my village, and not worried about the abstraction of the oath. But by the time our conversation ended, I think I changed my mind. The whole point of our Faith is that we do not believe that death is an end but a beginning, and we believe that those who have gone home to the Lord are still with us—literally a communion of saints. So, I changed my mind over the course of this hour: and I now think, in conclusion, that the red crown of martyrdom is a grace offered to some of tremendous faith, and that God will help us take care of the family we leave behind in the world. Entweder kam das Erwünschte zur Unzeit oder zur rechten Zeit das Unerwünschte. „Wie man’s macht, ist es falsch!“ sagte sie dann. Und heute weiß ich, dass wir sie nur nach unserer Pfeife hatten tanzen lassen wollen. So geht es Jesus: Johannes fastet und gilt als verrückt. Jesus isst und trinkt, und man hält ihn für einen Fresser und Säufer und für einen Verbündeten der Zöllner und Sünder. – Wie man’s macht, ist es falsch. Es gibt eine Erwartung, dass Gott zu uns passt, dass er sich fließend eingliedern lässt in unsere spießige Lebenswirklichkeit. Aber Gott ist nicht gekommen, um unseren Erwartungen zu entsprechen oder unseren Stimmungen zuzustimmen. Dass Anspruch und Wirklichkeit auseinanderfallen, gehört zu ihrem Wesen. Nur wenn sie sich unterscheiden, haben sie einander etwas zu sagen. Was soll also die Klage? Der Mensch Gewordene tanzt nicht nach der Pfeife der Menschen. Erst umgekehrt wird der Mensch frei. Diese Umkehrung beschreibt Madeleine Delbrêl in „Der Ball des Gehorsams“: Wir sind eingeladen zum Tanz zur Melodie der Wirklichkeit, mit der Gott uns umgibt.
