Matt Osborne is a real life hero; the kind that stories are written about and the kind that you cannot forget. Brave, driven, focused and committed, Matt continues to blaze a trail in the fight against modern day slavery. As Senior Vice President for Rescue and Rehabilitation at Operation Underground Railroad (O.U.R.), Matt rescues and ensures rehabilitation for children trafficked and sold into sexual slavery in the U.S. and around the world. Since joining O.U.R., Matt has led a number of rescue operations that have resulted in the liberation of some 120 trafficking victims and the arrest of almost 40 suspected traffickers. Matt's commitment and passion for guarding others from harm became clear after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Matt felt strongly about protecting his country and began working in national security, a decision that led to a twelve-year career with the CIA and later the Department of State. During that time, Matt worked with issues of terrorism against the U.S., chemical and biological proliferation and the war in Iraq, and ensuing insurgency and political transition after the fall of Saddam Hussein. Matt joined O.U.R. in August of 2014 and the vision became clear: the O.U.R. jump team could be what he calls a “force multiplier.” Matt felt that those in the U.S. government and in select countries around the world were doing exemplary work saving kids, but with more resources from O.U.R., these officials could simply do more to fight child exploitation. Matt is a native of Dallas, Texas and holds a B.A. in International Studies from Miami University in Oxford, OH, and a M.A. in International Policy Studies from the Monterey Institute of International Studies in California. He is married and has two daughters, who he says give him the drive to fight child exploitation and human trafficking every day. Matt says he feels blessed to be helping kids, and that there is simply no higher cause. Is it possible to end gender-based violence and human trafficking in just one generation? Programs like manKINDness, a men's advocacy program at New Friends New Life in Dallas, Texas, are working to do that and much more. By addressing gender-based violence and human trafficking directly with young men, the manKINDness program is taking steps to usher in a cultural shift that reverses toxic masculinity and embraces respect. In this episode, Matt Osborne explains the enormity of the problems of human trafficking, objectification of women, pornography addiction, et al, and how educating young men to reject traditional roles of manhood like anger and violence and demand more of themselves and their peers can ensure a safer future for all.Matt Osborne has been fighting the crime of human trafficking in some form since 2006 and currently leads the New Friends New Life Men's Advocacy Group in Dallas Texas where he coordinates the activities of one hundred men in North Texas as they mobilize to take action against sex trafficking and exploitation of women and girls by raising awareness through advocacy, education and volunteerism. Mr. Osborne served a 12-year career with the CIA and U.S. Department of State, where he worked issues related to terrorism against the homeland, illegal narcotics, organized crime and human trafficking. He regularly provided secrets and analysis to U.S. presidents, senior cabinet officials, and the National Security Council. As part of his mission to fight trafficking, Mr. Osborne has led a total of 16 undercover rescue operations that resulted in the liberation of 178 human trafficking victims and in the arrest of 55 traffickers.
Any time we get a chance to interview someone on the cutting edge of a problem facing admissions directors, you have to assume the interview is going to run long as it did with our conversation with Matt Osborne, Senior Vice President of Client Service and Sales at Ardeo Education Services in Bloomington, Indiana. Matt had so much to say, a thoughtful perspective, and a clear message to Admissions Directors that we almost had no choice but to drop the extended interview here in January. Student loan fears remain real, and going into the spring, you're going to be hearing a lot more about them. Consider this conversation a re-primer on the topic. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/adlunchcast/message
When Matt was 15 years old, he was told that he was an “Indigo Child” with a special “aura.” Today, he is an atheist who attributes his most mystical experiences to rock'n'roll. In this episode, we compare our observations of how quasi-mystical belief systems can rush to fill the religious voids left by our secular society, leading to magical thinking that idealizes children while neglecting their true psychosocial developmental needs. In what ways are today's “trans children” similar to the “indigo children” of 30 years ago? This conversation covers a lot of ground. Matt assuages my ego, explaining why it wasn't my fault that history was my worst subject in school. Later, I explain what I miss about being a quasi-Hindu hippie, as we compare my peak experiences drumming in call-and-response kirtan circles with the ecstatic joy he found in mosh pits. We also discuss the elements of ritual, transcendent unity, heuristics, adolescent development, social status, negative partisanship, historiography, subtypes of narcissism, family dynamics, parenting, our disconnection from nature, Jazz Jennings, spectral harms, the vital role of hardship in life, the long term mental health risk factors today's trans youth are likely face as they age, and what might happen when we realize: the kids aren't alright. Buckle up!Matt Osborne is a US Army signals intelligence and electronic warfare veteran, political scientist, and historian. He spent ten years in "netroots" as an online progressive activist. In 2012, he went from covering wonky policy topics and "movement news" to the strangest political "scene" in America upon the death of Andrew Breitbart, becoming the first "blogger" to write about Ali Alexander of 1/6 infamy. Later in 2016, he was one of the first people to write about Cambridge Analytica, Donald Trump, and all things Russia, but with the warning that it was too easy to lose direction in a "wilderness of mirrors." He was featured in the HBO documentary "After Truth" about his role in online information spaces during the 2017 special US Senate election in Alabama. Now disenchanted with the state of liberalism, and a repeat victim of "Cassandra syndrome," he has given up politics and become a conflict historian. His website Polemology.net is focused on the intersection of human minds and military revolutions. As an editor for The Distance, he puts the "gender identity" phenomenon in historical context as an emerging American New Age religious movement. In this episode, we mentioned Matt's conversation with Graham Lineman. Society is divided over how to conceptualize “human rights,” particularly when it comes to transgender medicalization and school policies. Political scientist Leor Sapir is uniquely qualified to help us understand how we got here. He explains how the laudable legacy of the civil rights movement shaped Americans' vulnerability to deceptive narratives about “social justice;” how the Office of Civil Rights' attempts to address bullying in schools led to the erosion of Title IX protections for girls; and how the American Civil Liberties Union turned against its own mission. This comprehensive deep-dive then shifts from politics to philosophy and psychology. Leor and I explore matters such as virtues and values, rights and responsibilities, hubris and corruption, good and evil, the sexual revolution, and moral instincts. We also do a Q&A, presenting Leor with some of our Twitter followers' questions. Leor Sapir is a fellow at the Manhattan Institute. A driven researcher with a Ph.D. in Political Science from Boston College, Dr. Sapir previously completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Program on Constitutional Government at Harvard University. His academic work, including his dissertation on the Obama Administration's Title IX regulations, has investigated how America's political culture and constitutional government shape public policy on matters of civil rights.Similarly, at the Manhattan Institute, Dr. Sapir applies his knowledge of political theory and American government to policy issues, honing in particularly on issues of gender identity and transgenderism. His inaugural essay in the Winter 2022 issue of City Journal explores a series of recent court rulings surrounding transgenderism, demonstrating how bad ideas translate from fringe academic theory into law and policy. Previous web pieces for City Journal have explored evolving athletic guidelines and media coverage surrounding transgender issues. He discussed these pieces in a recent episode of City Journal's 10 Blocks podcast. You can follow Leor on Twitter @leorsapir.Resources mentioned in the show:Leor recommended Rights Talk: The Impoverishment of Political Discourse, by Mary Ann Glendon I recommended The Case Against the Sexual Revolution: A New Guide to Sex in the 21st Century, by Louise Perry. I alluded to my conversation with Matt Osborne, but this has yet to come out; it will be released as a future episode. Whether rational or not, the biggest fear stopping students from enrolling is the fear of student loan debt. While mainstream perspectives and media representations are wildly off base, that incorrect information is what many families bring to the college search process. So what can we do about it? We took a different approach to guests this week - finding folks who can share unique perspectives that we can all consider immediately. Mark Salisbury, Co-Founder, and CEO of Tuition Fit in Davenport, Iowa, unpacks the fears students have and how we can collectively shed some light and perspective on what their experience is likely to be. Matt Osborne, Senior Vice President of Client Service and Sales at Ardeo Education Solutions in Bloomington, Indiana, shares his experience as a Vice President for Enrollment and how creative solutions may be what is needed. Collectively, we can all benefit from spending more time thinking about student loan fears, and this week is our contribution to that dialogue. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/adlunchcast/message

She shares the challenge of her experience of being a college professor with a 2 year old at home and how her roles have organically evolved from working to improve kid's lives directly to more of a systems level. She reminisces about playing music with the late Matt Osborne and talks about losing her husband and how having a young son at home at that time was an incredible gift.“How do you get through losing your husband? You have a five-year-old who needs you to get out of bed, make breakfast, and sort of keeps you going. I don't know how you do that when you don't have a little one kind of pulling you out of it. He pulls you out of your head and back into the stuff that has to get done right now. It doesn't matter how upset or depressed or sad you are, you still gotta make pancakes. It's kind of the 'fake it till you make it'. It's like he pulls you out and makes you live your life and go through the motions of just the stuff you have to do to carry on. Listen to This Episode I want you to know something. You owe it to yourself and the world to work hard and be successful at whatever you do.I wholesale and flip houses.I run mentoring groups to help others do the same. Why? Because I know that the more we push ourselves to succeed in this business, the more opportunities we each have to make an impact on the world. That’s what this business is about, for me.Making money is great.Having more freedom and time to do what we love is great. But those things are great because they allow us to do GOOD and give back and help others… our families, our communities, and the causes we care about. This is why you MUST succeed.I work about 2 hours per week in my real estate investing business.I’m thankful that my business has reached a point where that’s the case……because it means I can pour more of my time into making an impact. On today’s episode of the podcast, I’m doing something different. This isn’t going to be about real estate.Instead, I want you to meet someone very important.Every year at Flip Hacking LIVE, we support a charity. One organization we’ve had the privilege of working very closely with is Operation Underground Railroad… a group of guys and gals on the frontlines of saving children from human trafficking around the world. And when I say “frontlines,” I mean it…They’re the ones going on sting operations and kicking down doors to rescue these kids.Supporting their mission is a big part of why we do what we do……and today, I’ve brought Matt Osborne from O.U.R. onto the podcast to take you behind the scenes of the work they’re doing and the sad reality of why it’s necessary. We all got into house flipping and wholesaling for our own reasons. We all have our “why.”For me, supporting causes like Operation Underground Railroad is part of my “why.”And regardless of what causes or charities you support, I want to encourage you to stay focused on the impact you’re making.Wake up every day and remind yourself WHY you’re in this business. The world needs you to succeed. The world needs you to give it your all.Keep learning, growing, and taking action……and I’ll catch you on the flip side!
