When Ernesto Rodriguez of La Crosse was 24 years old, he left the only home he’d ever known: Cuba. He, along with 125,000 of his fellow Cubans, hopped on boats bound for the United States in 1980. They were part of the mass exodus known as the Mariel Boatlift, a rare moment when President Fidel Castro allowed residents to leave the island. And after he was sent to Fort McCoy, he moved in the Brandstetter family in Sparta, Wisconsin. Erne’s story is featured on the podcast, “WPR Reports: Uprooted.”

We wade into the heated debate over immigrants' impact on the labor market. When the number of workers in a city increases, does that take away jobs from the people who already live and work there? Does a surge of immigration hurt their wages? The debate within the field of economics often centers on Nobel-prize winner David Card's ground-breaking paper, "The Impact of the Mariel Boatlift on the Miami Labor Market." Today on the show: the fight over that paper, and what it tells us about the debate over immigration. For a period of time in the 1960s, the Central Intelligence Agency was one of the biggest, if not the biggest, employer in the city of Miami. The CIA had set up a base of operations there, aimed primarily at undermining the regime of Cuban leader Fidel Castro. From those early days, writes historian Vince Houghton, the Cold War battle against communism shaped the city, which he says should rank among the world's great capitals of espionage. Houghton and co-author Eric Driggs, both Miami natives, chronicle the city's spooky history in their rolicking new book Covert City: The Cold War and the Making of Miami. Houghton spoke to Shane Harris about some of the colorful characters that span this decades-long story, why Miami has played such a pivotal role in the history of U.S. spying, and how the the Cuban intelligence service became one of the best in the world. The Mariel Boatlift exodus has been called one of the U.S.'s most complex waves of immigration. It was named for the Cuban Port of Mariel, where more than 125,000 people emigrated from in 1980. You've likely heard about the large Cuban community that flourished in Miami. But did you know that nearly 15,000 Cuban refugees were sent to Fort McCoy, the U.S. Army base between Tomah and Sparta in southwest Wisconsin? Many settled in Madison. And many didn't talk about their experience, until now.  Maureen McCollum and Omar Granados tell their stories – and more – in an eight-part podcast. Nearly 43 years ago, a mass immigration of Cubans travelled from Mariel Harbor near Havana to the United States, known as the Mariel Boatlift. The exodus, which happened over several months, saw more than 125,000 Cubans make the journey across the Florida Straits. One of those people was a six-year-old girl, Janet Diaz-Bonilla, who travelled with her parents towards a new life. But it was a journey that would impact not only Janet's life, but also, the fabric of her adopted homeland. While many have looked back on these journeys to freedom through art writing, Janet, a writer herself, decided to tell her story through liquid, releasing La Marielita to rum at the end of last year. To find out more, we talked to Janet about perception, legacy, and how liquid can really tell stories in a very new way.

This episode we attempt to bring clarity to the overwhelming stress systematically placed upon Foundational United States  Black Classifieds(FUSBC). Systematic AntiBlack Mistreatment, disenfranchisement, AntiBlack Law Enforcement, Job Discrimination, Gentrification, Racial Dislocation, Environmental Racism and Immigrants and Refugees from 3rd World countries being dumped into already marginalized FUSBC communities. 1980 Mcduffie Riots is a case study of all these elements being mixed with an unhealthy boom of drugs, immigrant drug wars and guns. The result was Crime Bills and legislation which targeted exclusively FUSBC's. We use interviews from Neely Fuller Jr and Michelle Alexander to bring context.

Is this the dawn of  Dad Jokes? Joe and George take a look at a film neither had seen before this and yet they still managed to know just about every line in it. Zero Hour! was released in 1957, and was the inspiration for Airplane!. By “inspiration,” I mean it took so much from it that the producers had to officially acquire the rights. This is the dialog script, with bolded lines where the dialog is identical between the two movies. In particular, the line: “The life of everybody aboard depends on just one thing: Finding someone back there who not only can fly this plane, but who didn't have fish for dinner.” was what prompted Abrams and the Zuckers’ to make Airplane!. http://www.rogermwilcox.com/zero_hour.html Mariel Boatlift https://www.nytimes.com/1980/05/11/archives/retarded-people-and-criminals-are-included-in-cuban-exodus-200.html Cuban flight  https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/politics/1980/08/17/three-jetliners-hijacked-to-cuba/d099faa4-4dec-4776-908a-2651a65f30b5/

The Refugee Act of 1980 feels like a huge success...for a short amount of time. The first test of the act comes when Fidel Castro opens Cuba's borders (and Cuba's prisons) and hundreds of refugees arrive on Florida shores. The Mariel Boatlift Crisis forced the U.S. government to realize that not all asylum processing can happen abroad. Unfortunately, it also left the public with the impression that "Open arms and open hearts" leads only to crisis.

Almost forty years ago, during the sweltering summer of 1980, Fidel Castro declared that any Cubans desiring to leave the island of Cuba could do so, as long as someone outside of Cuba would come to the island and claim them. Between April and September of 1980, 1,600 vessels, commissioned by previously exiled Cubans, crossed the Florida Straits to claim more than 125,000 Cubans. The boats returned to the United States overloaded with precious cargo: Cuban families exiled from their homeland, searching for freedom. This is the story of one of those families. A story from the exiled south. Mariel intro music: Marc Ribot y Los Cubanos Postizos - Aurora en Pekín El Lector intro music: The Spam All Stars - Fiesta de los Feos

EP36 - Whether you have or haven't seen the 1983 film Scarface, you'll agree it has its place in pop culture. It's referenced in film, TV, and music; you might know lines from the movie ("Say hello to my little friend!"), and may have seen the infamous movie poster on a college dorm wall or two. But let's talk about how the film, which premiered only three years after the 1980 Mariel Boatlift, showed all Cuban political refugees as criminals. Art by Jeremy Ferris. We're back in Las Vegas this week, as we cover our own "Sin City Scarface". Jose Vigoa was a Cuban born, Soviet trained badass that jumped a shrimp boat to America during the Mariel Boatlift in 1980. He then made his way to Las Vegas, where he became a drug kingpin, and years later took the Las Vegas strip by storm, by taking down some of the most prestigious casinos Sin City has to offer in the form of brazen armoured truck robberies, and broad day casino hiests. This was hands down one of our favorites, and we hope you enjoy it as much as we did. Ignacio tells Joe about the advantages of growing up in Cuba; losing his mother at an early age; the agonies of a perfectionist outlook; navigating through marriages and divorces; and his lifelong love of baseball.

Alex Daoud , a native of Miami Beach, became a city commissioner in 1979 and then served three terms as mayor from 1985 to 1991, during the height of Miami's cocaine trade and Fidel Castro's infamous Mariel boatlift. After a fall from grace, he penned his first book, a riveting best seller, titled Sins of South Beach, The True Story of Corruption, Violence, Murder and the Making of Miami Beach.  In Sins of South Beach, Daoud offers an honest and unabashed account of his life and career, and warns of the intoxicating nature of political power. The autobiography focuses on Daoud’s contributions that propelled South Beach’s transformation from crime-ridden, slum-infested neighborhood into one of the world’s premier playgrounds. Daoud is not bashful about the seedy underside that fueled his administration, falling into a self-destructive pattern of behavior that permeated his political and personal life.
