Max Chilton talks with Harry Sherrard about his fascinating and varied career in Motorsport. After starting his career in karts aged 10, Max Chilton progressed up the racing ladder through Formula 3 and GP2, reaching Formula One in 2013 with the Marussia team. He achieved the distinction of being the only driver to finish every race of his rookie season. A further season in Formula One followed, then Max moved stateside to drive for Chip Ganassi Racing in the IndyCar series. In the 2017 Indianapolis 500, Max dominated the latter part of the race, leading 47 of the last 72 laps, ultimately finishing fourth. Further IndyCar seasons followed, before a switch to the World Endurance Championship, including the Le Mans 24 Hours. In June 2022, with a performance that anyone who witnessed it will never forget, Max took the electric McMurtry active-downforce car up the Goodwood hillclimb in 39.08 seconds, to set an astonishing new Festival of Speed shoot out record.
Looks like a miniature Batmobile, sounds like a TIE fighter from Star Wars, goes like the absolute clappers. And we've finally got behind the wheel of the McMurtry Spéirling – the car last seen kicking up dust and shredding hillclimb records at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. But it has been tinkered with and is now available to buy for a cool £984k. The new Spéirling Pure comes with all the goodies Max Chilton deployed at Goodwood. That means a twin-electric-motor setup powered by a 60kWh battery system detonating 745kW of electrons (or a nice, round 1,000bhp) on the rear axle. Together with a “patented downforce on demand system” and a scarcely believable kerbweight of under 1,000kg, this thing is capable of serious numbers. Not just 190mph flat out, but also the fact it'll pull 3G through the corners and be able to lap Silverstone 10 times at proper flat-out pace, then recharge in 20 minutes to do it all over again. And Ollie Marriage has experienced it for himself. So, Rowan Horncastle and Ollie Kew grill him to find out what this Cheat Mode car is really like to drive. Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome to episode 26 of the Lovecars On The Grid Podcast! Tiff Needell and Paul Woodman bring us another roundup of motorsport events from the past week! This week, we've had the safari rally, Moto GP, NASCAR and of course the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK! We kick off with the WRC Safari Rally in Kenya. Toyota had an epic weekend, with their cars completing the top 4! Hyundai were in 5th, with Ford finishing in 6th, 7th and 8th place. The win went to Kalle Rovanpera, with Welsh driver, Elfyn Evans as runner up. With the new hybrid vehicles, marshalls were stopping fans from helping drivers right their crashed cars. Apparently, with a risk of electrocution, fans are no longer allowed to interfere! The British Touring cars were racing this weekend too. The cars were at Croft, where Hyundai took at 1-2 with Dan Lloyd taking the double header win ahead of Tom Ingram in 2nd place. Tom Ingram still remains at the top of the table for the Championship though. Moto GP was potentially the most exciting race of the weekend, at Assen. Fabio Quartarar took out his main rival, Aleix Espargaro, who had an amazing fight back through the field, achieving a 4th place result! Both touring cars and Moto GP now have a 5 week Summer break! NASCAR were racing at Nashville, which unfortunately had a 2 hour break due to the rain. There were plenty of moments, with lots of spins and crashes, but the win went to Chase Elliot, followed by Kyle Busch. Paul attended the Goodwood Festival of Speed this weekend, and even managed to get a fast run up the hill in a Caterham 420 Cup car. Mixing amongst drivers like Nigel Mansell and other celebrities, it was a fantastic weekend with new cars such as the BMW M3 Touring being revealed. The McMurtry Spierling electric vehicle, with ex-Formula 1 driver, Max Chilton managed to set a new Goodwood hillclimb record, with a time of 39.08, which beat the previous record held by Nick Heidfeld back in 1999. It was also faster than the Volkswagen ID.R. Next weekend, we have the British Grand Prix at Silverstone! There's also the W Series there to support, with Formula 2, Formula 3 and the Porsche supercup! There's also Indycar at Ohio, with NASCAR at Road America and Formula E at Marrakesh. In Formula 1, Pierre Gasly has just re-signed for another year with Alpha Tauri. Red Bull reserve driver, Juri Vips has been suspended by the team after racial slurs in racing online.
Max Chilton is a British racing driver that powered through the junior ranks to make it to Formula One with Marussia. He later went to the US to challenge himself with Carlin and Chip Ganassi Racing in IndyCar, coming oh so close to winning the Indy 500, finally ending up fourth. We chat about his transition from racing into business ventures, his new racing passions, and the day his life almost came to a premature end at the hands of a flying Kimi tyre! This week on Trackside, Kevin Lee and Curt Cavin update Max Chilton's future plans as he and Carlin Racing step away from IndyCar, and discuss the 2022 plans for Juncos Hollinger Racing. The guys do an up-to-date car count for the Indy 500, including what teams could still add entries for May. They discuss the performance of IndyCar drivers Colton Herta, Jimmie Johnson and Helio Castroneves at the Race of Champions in Sweden. Kevin and Curt take listener questions, such as their expectations for Rahal Letterman Lanigan rookie Christian Lundgaard at St. Pete. We're joined by James Roe Jr., who will drive for TJ Speed Motorsports in Indy Lights this season. The 23-year-old Irish driver introduces himself and how he got to the Road to Indy, and how he adjusted to Indy Pro 2000 last season. Kevin and Curt discuss the NASCAR Clash at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and how it exceeded expectations. Later in the show, Ernie Francis Jr. calls in. We talk with the seven-time TransAm champion and SRX race winner about how excited he is to join Indy Lights with Force Indy. Francis tells us about his path to the Road to Indy and where he thought his future was headed until a surprise call from Roger Penske. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

So a couple of weeks back, we had a rare week where none of the series we cover had a major race, so we thought it would be a good time to take stock and review the 2021 IndyCar Series. King, Dre, RJ and special guest Zoeey Hamilton go team by team and evaluate where they're at, future prospects, thoughts on expansion or in some cases, scaling down, and it's a 100 minute special for you guys to enjoy. So, included on the bill, but not limited to, we have: A Zoeey rant for the ages on Carlin, Max Chilton's commitment to the series and whether an entity like Juncos buys their team up! Dale Coyne and a breakdown of Romain Grosjean's incredibly fun and emotional rookie season, his future on ovals and with the #28 car in Andretti for 2022, and who gets the #18 if Ed Jones isn't coming back? Call forth the good ol' Dale Coyne *TBC entry*! Rinus Veekay almost felt forgotten about in the land of youngsters winning in the new age of IndyCar, remember when he y'know… won at Indy's Road Course? We talk about his future, as well as who gets ther #20 seat at Ed Carpenter Racing to share with the man himself, as Ryan Hunter-Reay tests for them… Meyer Shank's Jack Harvey and how he might still be the unluckiest man in all of the series. A series that has Conor Daly in it no less. Also, their future and them seemingly inheriting the mother of all Indy 500 death-lineups in Simon Pageanud taking Jack Harvey's #60. Combined with Helio's full-time return at the age of 2022, can they get North American immortality with an unthinkable 5th 500 for Spiderman? Arrow's Pato O'Ward and what might be missing from McLaren as they continue to bang on the door of a series title. Is it a 2nd elite driver? Maybe a 3rd car? Bringning in Nico Hulkenberg and Stoffel Vandoorne could be a sign of things to come… Rahal Letterman Lanigan might have had a completely different season if it weren't for that loose tyre at the 500 on Graham Rahal's #15 car. Sato may be leaving, but a 3-car team of him, Jack Harvey and F2's Christian Lundgaard is hard not to be excited about. And then the Big 3 - Team Penske slowly leaning towards a rebuild? And does downsizing the team put more pressure on talented newcomer Scott McLaughlin as he competes even more intensely against Josef Newgarden and Will Power? We untangle the mess of Andretti. They have the series most talented youngster in Colton Herta, but everything else… wasn't great. Alex Rossi looks disinterested, Hinchcliffe was driving hurt and Hunter-Reay seems in decline. A refresh looms, with Grosjean coming, and maybe Kyle Kirkwood too? And Chip Ganassi. Which was an excuse for us to gush over Alex “Wholesome Bitch” Palou one more time. See you for more IndyCar in 2022!

When it comes to racing, Max Chilton has done pretty much everything by the ripe old age of 30. He currently races in America's IndyCar series, having come agonisingly close to winning their most iconic race the Indy500. Prior his move he competed in Formula One, driving for Marussia F1 in 2013 and 2014 and in 2012, he raced in the GP2 series for Marussia-backed Carlin Motorsport. Max talks about his rise through the racing ranks, what it was like to have raced alongside the late Jules Bianchi, and how the sport differs between F1 and IndyCar. He also discusses his personal life and we meet his very talented wife, Chloe. A great insight into what it takes to be a top level racing driver. Stay tuned, plenty more amazing guests on the way too! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
This week on Lovecars On the Grid podcast, Tiff and Paul discuss NASCAR, Formula E and the countdown to Imola begins! The ‘Blue-Emu Maximum Pain Relief 500' NASCAR race is first up, and it was typical Martinsvile mayhem all the way. While nearer to home the Formula E boys were winding their way around Rome for a double header weekend. What do you think of Formula E? Do you like the qualifying system, the often petty penalties, ATTACK MODE!, or how about the fan boost? Coming up Tiff gives his predictions for true petrol heads starting a big weekend with the Formula 1 at Imola. Will his 1, 2 and 3 be correct? And a look ahead at Indycar, kicking off at Alabama Motorsports Road Course with F1s ex Grosjean, together with some British hopes – former GP driver Max Chilton, also Ed Jones and Jack Harvey. Next week NASCAR is at Richmond for the ‘Toyota Owners 400', MotoGP is in Portugal, but perhaps the main event is surely the Caterham Academy Sprint at Curborough!

From there, the guys dissect the F1 race at Bahrain and wax poetically about Charles Leclerc’s near-victory at the race. The two close by covering almost two hours of fan Q&A as Mann, who took a vocal stand against the FIA's dubious appointment of Carmen Jorda to its Women in Motorsports Commission, shares her thoughts on the situation and fields a number of impressive questions--along with one that was decidedly unfiltered--during a long stint with MP. We get side tracked by donuts briefly this week but manage to get it back under control. Fernando Alonzo didn't miss race in Monaco, and beside why should he - He's shown us that he doesn't need to be in an F1 car to have a Honda engine blow up on him.... The Indy 500's Rookie of the Year is - Surprise - Fernando Alonso... Max Chilton says that F1 could benefit from IndyCar style spotters... Nikki Lauda says this season is all over. Mercedes can't figure out why Lewis' car isn't working right. Honda might not have an engine upgrade ready for Montreal, but McLaren says that aerodynamically the car is doing good. VJ Mallya is upset at Gene Haas. Formula One Group wants more races, and they want the everywhere. And Esteban Gutiarrez is back in a race car - just not in F1.
The rain held off and we turned a full 200 laps for the 101st Running of the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race on the Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend. McLaren F1 driver Fernando Alonso stole the limelight most of the Month of May and Race Day was no exception, but other former Formula 1 drivers also had their moments including Alexander Rossi, Juan Pablo Montoya, Max Chilton, and of course Takuma Sato. Three of these drivers with Formula 1 experience were on a team owned and operated by former Formula 1 driver, Michael Andretti. Let that sink in for a moment. We’ll dissect the race, discuss the potential fall-out of the Dixon-Howard incident and the Rookie of the Year controversy, and assess the championship points implications. We also take a look at this weekend’s Detroit Grand Prix. No rest for the weary.

Former F1 and now Indy Car Racer Max Chilton chats at the Goodwood 75th Members Meeting
Happy New Year! We're back from vacation and ready to go. This week we have word that Max Chilton will be remaining with Chip Gnassi racing for the 2017 IndyCar season. Could Liberty Media try and introduce a cost cap to F1? More annual reviews... Pat Symonds has left Williams, Suzy Wolf received and MBE, and Filipe Massa - appears to be coming out of retirement right after he left for retirement...
A note for our broadcast partners - this week we go long. Since we didn't record last week, we had a lot to talk about this week... So while we were gone it seems like the plot of a bad action/adventure movie (or at least a lame episode of Arrow) played out in F1. Bernie Ecclestone's Mother in Law was kidnapped - and the leader to the gang that took her appears to be his helicopter pilot. So what's next, are we going to find out that Bernie is older than his mother in law - oh, right... The good news is that she's home safe. The future of Rio Haryanto is up in the air still - mind you this is the future of his 2016 season, not his 2017 season. The big question everyone is asking is what is going at Ferrari? But also how can Mercedes forget how to use a stop watch? Not only was the German Grand Prix last weekend, but so was the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio, and we were right in the thick of it. If you haven't been to our Facebook page, this would be a good time to visit. Check out photos of the behind the scenes actions - and of Max Chilton and Alexander Rossi.
You think Johnny Herbert is still on Fernando's Christmas Card list? In this episode of Motorsport101, focused mostly on SO MUCH OF BAHRAIN: - Nico Rosberg won, Lewis Hamilton gets torpedo'd by Val Bottas and Vettel blows up on the line. Amazingly, the race was still good. - Has public opinion already turned on Haas? We talk the cynicism behind Grosjean's 5th place finish. - We talk Stoffel Vandoorne's awesome points scoring debut, the nature of Alonso being dropped and THAT conversation with Johnny Herbert. - We break down some of Bahrain's TV ratings and early thoughts on C4's coverage so far. - We talk Hamilton getting caught with a shisha pipe, and ask if he's getting a bad rap from the media. - We also talk about the 2nd coming of Elimination Qualifying as well as the GPDA's more shady behaviour. Politics are fun guize. Also, we talk IndyCar's Phoenix GP, and why it didn't really work on paper despite the race being relatively entertaining, as well as the new blood feud between Graham Rahal and Max Chilton, and why we think Rahal was a tad hypocritical, despite it not being his fault. Hope you enjoy the show, and we'll catch up with MotoGP and Formula E on next week's episode!
God, we're 30 episodes in already?! That went quick. Anywho, in this edition of the Motorsport 101 Podcast: - We're joined by one half of the awesome Grid Girls Podcast, friend of the show, Sarah Connors! She fills in for Adam, and she is awesome. Trust me on this! (Follow her on Twitter - @Sarah_Connors, as well as @TheGridGirls, it's a great show and Sarah was a delight to have on!) - We talk some more about the evolution of the Halo news as more drivers have dropped their two cents, from Lewis Hamilton to the mini-beef between Hulkenberg and Ricciardo. Civil War is at hand. Wonder who Iron Man is? - And for the main meat and potatoes of the episode this time around, we're previewing the 2016 IndyCar Season, and there's a ton to talk about. We go team by team, as well as analysing the absolutely stacked Rookie class with Conor Daly, Alexander Rossi, Spencer Pigot, Matthew Brabham and Max Chilton! - Can Graham Rahal and Josef Newgarden repeat their 2015 successes? Will Penske curb-stomp the field? What RHR will we get? Can Dixon make it 5? Can Will Power finally win a 500? All that and much more on the next exciting episode of Dragonball Z! Or Motorsport101!
Trust me to make an episode sound like an 80's pop band. Jem is my name, no-one else thinks the same... Anywho, a shorter episode than normal, but it's still a pretty loaded episode for just under 70 minutes, including: - Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona Review/Debate about Balance of Performance - Talk about the 2017 rule changes, the push for closed cockpits, ground affect aero not a thing? - Max Chilton signing for Chip Ganassi Racing's IndyCar team - K-Mag really IS driving for Renault, the confusing hypocritical U-Turn on Pastor, who's the next F1 whipping boy (My money's on Marcus Ericcson) Remember, if you're a $5 Patreon backer, you get the episode 2 whole days early! Massive thanks to everyone who's supported the show so far and enjoy Episode 27!

Mercedes cops a pasting from Crompo and Coch after the Monaco Grand Prix as their pair hypothesise the possible whereabouts of the missing Chris Balfe. Max Chilton's faux pas with Pastor Maldonado gets a mention while Crompo has a rant about why Monaco shouldn't be on the F1 calendar at all.
McLaren is running inferior Mercedes engines, argues Crompo. Joined by Chris Balfe and Mat Coch the trio dissect the Spanish Grand Prix, taking exception with Max Chilton while heaping praise on Esteban Gutierrez and Force India. Somehow they forgot to mention race winner Fernando Alonso though Lewis Hamilton's movie career does rate a mention.
Matthew presents #LondonGP - your weekly motor sport and music extravaganza on ZoneOneRadio the community radio station for Central London. But before all that, he did a similar thing for another radio station... On this show from 2011 Matthew talks to British Racing Drivers’ Club President Derek Warwick about the BBC/Sky F1 rights issue and the penalties he was party to imposing against Jaime Algesuari and Pastor Maldonado after the previous week’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in his role as Drivers’ Representative on the stewards panel. And he talks to - now Marussia driver - Max Chilton, who had just fulfilled the dream of a lifetime by driving an F1 car in anger for the first time.
