On this episode, Matt and Richard remember several pioneering female drivers from the past; each an inspiring character who competed on equal terms with their male peers and who achieved, against the odds, some incredible things.   Those discussed included Maria Theresa De Filippis (the first woman to compete in a world championship Grand Prix), Pat Moss (the talented rally driving sister of F1 star Stirling Moss), Lella Lombardi (the first woman to score an F1 point), Desire Wilson (the only woman to win an F1 race of any sort), Michele Mouton (a four-time world rally winner), Janet Guthrie (the first woman to qualify and compete in both Indy 500 and Daytona 500), and many more. And after reappraising the past, Matt and Richard bring us up to the present to look at efforts to bring more female drivers into the sport, and they also ponder the age old question of whether female racers will ever become mainstays in F1 in the future. In 1984, Martin Brundle and Ayrton Senna made their Formula 1 debuts. They had just fought each other in an epic battle for the 1983 British Formula 3 title. But while there was little to separate the duo in junior racing, their F1 careers panned out very differently. As Senna went on to achieve hero status as a triple World Champion, Brundle's 12-year career was significantly shaped by very serious injuries he suffered in just his ninth Grand Prix. Speaking to Tom Clarkson in the latest of F1 Beyond The Grid's LEGENDS episodes, Martin describes in great detail the crash that caused his injuries, how close he came to losing his foot, and what impact that had on the rest of his time in F1. Brundle also talks about why he and Tyrrell Racing were disqualified in his first season, what it was like being a rookie back then, how Schumacher was different to Senna, where he thinks Adrian Newey's future might lie, his thoughts on F1's global standing, and much more. He didn't come from a racing family. He followed in the footsteps of his father and qualified as a doctor. How Jonathan Palmer ended up driving in Formula 1 is an intriguing tale of passion for racing, intuition and plenty of graft. Palmer initially competed in Formula Ford but after qualifying as a doctor, he decided to focus on racing professionally. He became British Formula 3 champion in 1981 and European Formula 3 champion in 1983. That year, Williams gave him his F1 debut at the European Grand Prix. He would go on to race for RAM, Zakspeed and Tyrrell over the next six years – scoring 14 championship points along the way. Palmer takes Tom Clarkson through his unique journey from studying medicine to competing in Formula 1. He reflects on some memorable drives in Monaco and we hear wonderful insight into what it was like working with Ayrton Senna as a test driver for McLaren in 1990. Palmer, whose son Jolyon also raced in F1 for Renault in 2016 and 2017, became part of the BBC's Formula 1 coverage after retiring. He recalls working the day Senna lost his life at Imola in May 1994. Follow, rate and review F1 Beyond The Grid and share this episode using #F1BeyondTheGrid.

His time in F1 was brief and ‘brutal', but he learned lessons he's passing on to his son. Jan Magnussen, father of Haas driver Kevin, arrived in Formula 1 in the mid-1990s feeling unbeatable. His confidence came from a stunning championship-winning season in British Formula 3, in which he broke records set by the great Ayrton Senna. F1 broke that confidence. ‘I don't think I understood the enormity of the task' Jan tells Tom Clarkson as he honestly looks back on a difficult time with McLaren and Stewart Grand Prix. Did the early success which launched him into F1 have a downside? Did a ‘driving lesson' from triple World Champion team boss Jackie Stewart do more harm than good? Jan remembers his sudden F1 exit, and how he rediscovered his love of racing. Today, he shares that love and the wisdom of his experience with Kevin as his father, sportscar teammate and mentor. There's just so much to look forward to this weekend. For starters, a race at Spa? After last year's debacle, all it takes to worry fans & Formula 1 alike is a few drops of rain. Also, will drivers approve of the changes made to make the Spa Francorchamps safer? Let's hope that some of the iconic corner haven't lost their character. Piasco (or Piasco-gate) will hog headlines in the build-up to the weekend. The other talking points will be the changes enforced to control porpoising (or vertical oscillations) & flexi-floors. Will this bring Mercedes in the fight? Join our race watchalong sessions with the legendary British Formula 1 commentator Steve Slater (ex-Sky TV, ESPN, Star Sports). On the live stream, you can discuss with Steve & our hosts various race-related topics - strategies, performances, insights & more. Join us to enhance your real-time race viewing experience! In this episode of the Inside Line F1 Podcast, Soumil, Sundaram (aka @f1statsguru) and Kunal bring to you the 2022 Belgian GP preview. Can Charles Leclerc take pole & win? That's the question on everyone's minds. The Dutch/Belgian fans will be out in force to support their favourite driver & championship leader, Max Verstappen. But seriously, will the technical changes bring Mercedes in the fight? Since the last race in Hungary, the reigning Constructors' Champions definitely have momentum on their side. There's a lot to look forward to - including the stats preview segment & why elevation changes are most-talked about when the Formula 1 circus visits the legendary Spa Francorchamps. Tune in! We didn't rush this one out at the end of 2021 because so much of our time was spent with the incredibly late running F1 calendar, plus we knew that we had a healthy gap before these series started again. Welcome to Episode 16 of Lovecars On The Grid podcast, the global motorsport roundup, where this week we cover the Caterham Academy round at Silverstone, World Superbikes, Indycar and much more! This weekend, the Caterham Academy was at the home of British Formula 1, Silverstone! Another controversy with our own Paul Woodman, following using dry tyres for the qualifying, the Lovecars car qualified 19th, then having got up to 4th place, was he innocently taken out in the race? Full video to come soon! At the Austrian Grand Prix, Max Verstappen is starting to run away from Lewis Hamilton in the points, but it's still Red Bull vs. Mercedes! Who will walk away with the Championship this year? Lando Norris and Sergio Perez receive penalties, but were they right to be given? Did you know a Formula car is as long and as wide as a Rolls Royce Phantom?! In the W Series, British racing driver Jamie Chadwick took the podium having dominated the race, with British drivers taking all three podium places. In Formula 3, Tiff seems to prefer the feature race as opposed to the sprint race! No MotoGP this week, but the Superbikes were at Donington Park! The usual British domination of Superbikes that we're used to over the years is now under attack from Turkish rider, Toprak Razgatlioglu, who beat Jonathan Rea and Alex Lowes to 1st place. This week, Indycar was at mid-Ohio, one of the few tracks with very few overtakes. Unfortunately no joy for the two British drivers during this race, but Josef Newgarden finally got a well deserved win! NASCAR were at road America, for the first time in many years. Overtakes were few, but plenty of action nonetheless, with team mates colliding and an interesting reversing manoeuvre from Kyle Bush. Next week, we have no Formula 1 or MotoGP sadly. The only European race we can see is the British GT at Donington Park. Most of the action is in America, with NASCAR in Atlanta. Indycar is heading to the streets of Toronto and Formula E is in New York! FOLLOW ME ON INSTAGRAM FOR MORE CONTEXT ON MY GUESTS: https://www.instagram.com/crownunfiltered/   VIDEO VERSION OF THIS: https://youtu.be/7PWua-tBtgk   ABOUT MARTIN: This man is one of the Car Design industry's biggest unsung heroes and nothing short of a legend.   Martin has designed award-winning cars, products and motorbikes. He also competed in the British Formula 3 Championship against many great race car drivers, including Nigel Mansell and the amazing Ayrton Senna.   The Scottish native could easily have embraced the comfort of corporate security. Instead, he passionately sought out challenge after challenge and had to prove himself in every new situation.   Martin has contributed an insane amount to the industry and he did this from the shadows as a freelancer, a gun for hire, a hitman...whatever you want to call it. He has built a reputation for getting things done.   The first big project that put him as well as the UK-based design house, IAD, on the international design map, was a concept car called the Alien (used in the thumbnail for this episode). Martin went on to spend almost 4 decades (and counting) working independently for many different companies including AUDI, Ford, BMW and Aprilia Motorcycles.   He contributed an immeasurable amount to both the Iconic Z3 and the first-generation Audi TT. Unfortunately, he has never been credited for his contributions to either project. The story of the TT, in particular, has been one of the most callous acts of exploitation in the industry, even by large German OEM standards.   I did probe Martin on this during our conversation and, understandably, he refused to elaborate on the subject. It's been nothing short of torturous and after almost 30 years, he is happy to leave it in the past. At times there have been half-arsed attempts by very senior executives to make things 'right', but it's proved to be little more than lip service. I urge everyone to do their own research on the subject before accepting what has been fed to us.   It needs to be said that despite all this, Martin continued gracefully and with the kind of dignity that is devoid in much of our industry. It's been a very tough path, but he has retained his independence and is still fresh as fuck at the ripe old age of 63! He sketches daily and is a working designer.   I don't know if Martin will ever get the respect that he truly deserves, but every young person starting out should take a leaf out of his book!   MARTIN'S SOCIALS: https://www.instagram.com/_ml_design/ ttps://www.linkedin.com/in/martinlongmore/   ====================================================   ABOUT ME: I am a South African Designer, Digital Modeller and the host of Crown Unfiltered. I will be talking to a cross section of people that work in the Car Design Industry. These will include designers, digital and clay modellers, vis artists and colour & material designers. The focus of our conversations will be centered around personal processes and experiences within the business. My aim is to demystify some of the preconceptions about this industry and give people an unadulterated glimpse into the business. I also wish to give the younger generation the opportunity to see that the people that these professionals come in different shapes and sizes and some of them will be unknown. An incident with Jan Lammers in the Macau GP bizarrely led to a friendship with Jan who was also racing for Jaguar in sports cars, this opened the door for Andy to test for Jaguar and become one of their factory drivers and he repaid their faith by winning Le Mans for them in 1988. As a bonus, Ross shares his “vision process.” Jonatan’s speed secret: Know yourself. Jonatan’s second speed secret: Expect nothing, accept everything. #19: Oswaldo Negri - How his prayers won him the lottery!

RaceCoin Podcast

Podcast with Host: Jai Shukla & Guest: Oswaldo Negri Jr Q1 - What got you into motorsport? On Sundays, Oswaldo Negri used to wake up at 7 am because there was a Go-kart race on TV. When Oswaldo was 8 that's when he realizes that is what he wanted to do and he told his dad about it. His parents had opposed him doing it because they stated that it was too expensive. Oswaldo Negri 's dad told him, that he could race one day if he's going to win the lottery. Oswaldo told him "I'm going to pray right now". Two weeks later my dad won the lottery.   Q2 - What God are you praying to, how did that work out? Oswaldo Negri just prayed. My Parents and Grandparents taught him how to pray as a kid.   Q3 - How would you like to be remembered? I would like to be remembered as someone who gave everything he could in everything he did as an honest guy. It doesn't matter what if you're allocating the time for it. As I can do something the best of my ability and be happy with my performance, that's the main thing, especially on the racing side. With Motor Racing business, you don't know who you're going to meet, so you have to keep your doors open.   Q4 - What will you say to people who are trying to still achieve what you are doing and have the work ethic that you have? I didn't give up. I went to England to try to be in Formula 1. I raced British Formula 3 in the early 90s. In the end, when I was close to approaching Formula 1, something happened that blocked that road. I thought all my dreams and my hard work it's all gone. In my opinion, it was probably not meant for me to be in F1. My story was here in the US. I thought I would never be happy. I was even depressed. At age 55 I'm still racing. You have to have options - sometimes doors close but a better one is going to open. Persons need to be ready for opportunities. When you approach these opportunities while enjoying yourself you perform well in whatever you're doing.   Q5 - What’s your motto in life? Balance of everything basically - the balance of my professional career and family. I do a lot of coaching. You have to find all the positive stuff that happens daily in your life.    Q6 - What is the most thrilling event you've ever participated in or potentially won? The biggest race that I won was Daytona in 2012. We won the race and it's hard to explain how much it takes to do it physically and mentally. That's one thing I won't forget, that feeling. After you taste something as good as that you go to a different level and that's what you will look for while on track.   Q7 - Who and what inspires you? I grew up in Brazil. It’s a great country, but it was going through a really rough time and there were only 2 idols at that time and every kid wanted to be one of them, Pele and Ronaldinho. I would love to hear Ronaldinho’s story.    Q8 - How has your definition of beauty changed over time? I don't think it changes, because you try to see the beauty in everything. I look at things positively, beautiful career, family and friends.   Q9 - You mentioned reading as part of your hobbies - is that something you still have time for? I used to do a lot more than I do now. I enjoy watching series that are not Fiction. I have a couple of books that I love reading, one of them I read every year.    Q10 - When you see your career almost coming to an end if you’re still being called into a new contract that's keeping you driving? As long as I'm enjoying it, I'll still continue. Just before I connected with you I was doing a powerpoint with driving notes. I was doing everything with very small details. I try to get as many details as possible, so when I arrive at a track I can get going as quickly as possible.    Q11 - In terms of your plan for when you do actually retire, what do you see the shift being in terms of your attention for time? I like to be involved in motor racing on the management side and have worked with many drivers. I had worked with a young American driver, Darren King. I took him to England a few times to test British Formula 3. I enjoy passing on to him what I know so we can cut his learning curve and help him. Throughout my career, I learned from my mistakes. I enjoy passing on to persons what I know from this career. My nephew started racing in Brazil at age 9, that’s actually the age I had also started racing. I went there 2 weeks ago to help him in one of the races; the whole family was there to support my nephew.   Q12 - Did you actually give either of these guys (Nephew and Darren King) the ultimate prayer for winning everything? If they win I feel like a winner also. When they do well I cheer and get extremely happy. That feeling is the same when I win a race and that's a very satisfying thing.

He's next goal - to take them to the top flight of the north American game. He also tells us about his fears for football in Ivory Coast. At the age of 18, he's taking the next steps by competing in the British Formula three Championship - a series won in the past by the likes of Ayrton Senna and Mika Hakkinen who went on to be crowned Formula One World Champions. Not content with a pursuing a career in motor sport, Jeremy is also studying at Cheltenham College and recently set up a library in the Kibera slum in his homeland. From sports arena to silver screen It used to be that the most popular films made in Bollywood were romances or action movies. But not any more. It's always been said that sport provides great drama - and now that's being transferred to the cinema screen by India's film-makers and is proving a big hit with cinema goers. It's also prompting a large number of Indian youngsters to take up a sport, as Rahul Tandon reports from India. Raising the game Australia's leading female cricketers are set for a pay rise of 125 per cent. On the international stage they're out-shining their male counterpart and later this year will bid to win the World Cup for the eighth time. Their captain Meg Lanning tells us progress has been for female cricketers, but don't compare the men's and women's games. Playing for the crowd Organ music used to be a regular sound at American baseball stadiums, but in the digital age some teams moving away from the 70 year old tradition. Not at the Minnesota Twins, where their organist Sue Nelson has been entertaining the crowd and supporting the team for almost two decades. Picture credit: Didier Drogba (Getty Images)
