Silently it waited in a woodland glen, baited with dreams to tempt… the strange lost company that time had forgot. The Elf-Trap by Francis Stevens. That's next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast. There's a good chance you've never heard of Francis Stevens. But after today's story you will probably never forget her. She has been called “the woman who invented dark fantasy.” She was born Gertrude Mabel Barrows in Minneapolis Minnesota in 1883. Some say her middle name was Myrtle instead of Mabel but since the state of Minnesota and the county where she was born don't have birth records going back that far we will never know. She wrote her first short story at age 17, a science fiction story titled The Curious Experience of Thomas Dunbar. She mailed the story to Argosy. The story was accepted and published in the March 1904 issue, listing the author as "G. M. Barrows”. Although the initials disguised her gender, this appears to be the first instance of an American female author publishing science fiction, and using her real name. She had only seven short stories published and wrote five novels, with just two released during her lifetime. From Argosy magazine in July 1919, The Elf-Trap by Francis Stevens…Next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, The punishment had to fit more than just the crime—it had to suit every world in the Galaxy! This week's episode takes us back to the Yield tour to cover Pearl Jam's first headlining arena gig in Minnesota. With only a few shows under their belt in the early onset of the Matt Cameron era, the band was starting to figure out their stride with the new, then temporary, drummer. The crowd was red hot for every performance and every hiccup within this set, which led to some surprised reactions from Ed, who didn't have the show in mind as a sleeper show. The big story coming out of this show stemmed from a callback to something that The Who did in their live shows. After years of playing My Generation ad nauseum, they turned the song into a very riffy, blues influenced jam. This is something that Ed, a lifelong Who fan, picked up on and started to utilize during Porch in a similar fashion back around the mid-2000's. This was the first instance where they dabbled in it. We'll talk about the history of both My Generation blues and the slow/riffy Porch intros and how it became a staple for them much later in their live career. We'll also dig into great performances of Brain Of J., Faithfull, Even Flow, Black and very early versions of Pilate and All Those Yesterdays which were rarely played that year. Joining us for this episode is our longtime friend Kirk Walton who we like to call Mr. Minnesota. He'll share his story about the show which included a trip to Mervyn's of California, and we'll also get to chat about the misery that Minnesota sports fans endure. Our show today featured Randy Van Rooyen and Jon Marquet, both with Trust Point, but in different roles. Randy is a financial advisor and in charge of strategic relationships for the firm, and Jon, a JD, is in charge of business development for its three locations in LaCrosse and Eau Claire Wisconsin, and Minneapolis Minnesota. The firm practices internal collaboration amongst its many areas of expertise, which is rather impressive for an industry that tends to operate in silos. Trust Point offers services in several practice areas, namely Trustee services, 401K products, Wealth Management, and Family Office services. Their innovative and client-centric approach was the impetus behind Randy and Jon both acquiring their CEPA credential recently, so now Trust Point is officially offering exit planning services for its business owner clients; a natural add-on. Trust Point is over 100 years old and is independently owned. Many of its employees have worked for the firm for a long time, which says a lot about the great place that it is to work. Many of their clients are owners of private businesses, and we discussed a story of one such client that could have had a disastrous ending were it not for the knowledgeable and collaborative team that came to their rescue.
