See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The relationship metaphor, a bridge period, and the point of entry. Justin Sullivan (Nightshop, Flatworms, The Babies) Night Shop "The Beloved Returns" LP- https://www.salinasrecords.com/products "Night Shop is the songwriting project of Justin Sullivan. Sullivan has worked as a touring drummer for the past twenty years with a half dozen DIY punk bands, including Ringers and an early incarnation of Worriers. In 2009, he joined The Babies alongside Kevin Morby and Cassie Ramone. When the band went on hiatus in 2013, Sullivan moved to Los Angeles with Morby and continued working with him as a staple of the live band and playing on all of Morby's studio albums. In the meantime, Sullivan also formed the fuzz punk outfit Flat Worms, with Tim Hellman of Oh Sees and Will Ivy. But in the middle of a tour in August of 2016, Sullivan realized the rigors of the road had grown to be too much. He made the decision to take a full calendar year away from touring and focus, for the first time, on writing his own music. Like most of Sullivan's projects, the album is a family affair. His former touring and recording partner in the Kevin Morby band, Meg Duffy (Hand Habits) plays bass on several of the songs and sings backup vocals on a few as well. Flat Worms cohort Will Ivy plays lead guitar on some, while Mare labelmate and soon-to-be touring partner Anna St. Louis sings backup on two songs. The album was engineered by Jarvis Taveniere of Woods and mixed by Drew Fischer who previously worked with Sullivan on Morby's first two records and The Babies second album Our House On The Hill. “For the past twenty years, Justin has been guided by music, moving through the world one song at at time. No matter the project, he has always been seen less as a drummer and more as the yin to the songwriters yang, with his defined ability to help craft a song into exactly what it should be. He is a secret weapon – the thread that runs through many people's favorite records. And so it is here that he steps out from behind his kit for the first time and to stage center as Night Shop. When I think about this record, a lyric from “A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall,” comes to mind. It's the line where Dylan sings, “I'll know my song, well before I starting singing.” In The Break is the product of someone who has had a lot to say and has waited for the perfect moment to say it.” -Kevin Morby" Excerpt from https://woodsist.com/product/night-shop-in-the-break-lp/ Nightshop: Bandcamp: https://nightshop.bandcamp.com Instagram: @nightshopband Website: https://www.nightshopband.com Records: https://www.salinasrecords.com/products Merch: https://nightshop.bandcamp.com/merch Flatworms: Bandcamp: https://flatwormsmusic.bandcamp.com Instagram: @flatwormsband Records: https://www.dragcity.com/artists/flat-worms Merch: https://www.merchbar.com/rock-alternative/flat-worms The Babies: Instagram: @thebabiesforever Records: https://kevinmorby.merchtable.com/the-babies/? A pact to crowdsurf, the offer to sell a bootleg Rage Against The Machine T-Shirt for $20 at a food court in Long Island, and Greek tanning oil. Brian Schleyer (The Babies, First Bloom) "In 2008, Kevin Morby and Cassie Ramone shared a small apartment in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn for a few months and wrote some songs. After meeting again in a house party, the two decided to start a band. The idea was to recapture the early, stress-free days of playing music before they were both in groups that had gained some success and created accompanying pressures. Despite the intention, nothing much came of the idea until the next winter when both bands again had a break. Justin Sullivan, who had played with Ramone in Bossy, began practicing with them on drums, and The Babies debuted as a three-piece in March 2009 at Dead Herring, their friends' loft in Brooklyn. They played a few times before asking Nathanial Stark, formerly of Bent Outta Shape, to join on bass, and the full lineup's first shows were in that summer. The band released self-made tapes and singles for the small Wild World and Make a Mess labels before releasing their self-titled debut album for Shrimper in February 2011.They toured for much of the year, eventually replacing Stark with new bassist, Brian Schleyer. In early 2012, they left their Brooklyn home to record their second album in Los Angeles. Our House on the Hill was released on Woodsist late in the year." The ballad-centric offering will set you thinking of Bert Jansch, Tim Buckley and Gram Parsons, but for a wandering new generation looking to get engaged by something/anything. As he sings on Illusion: “That's a pretty arrow, you know I need an illusion. I have no need for one like mine.” Casting off a half dozen snakeskins from a long apprenticeship on Tucker White's Chthonic Records in The Great Salt Lake City — Burton signed to San Francisco's Tompkins Square after seeing that they were kindred about what music did and does. Burton also felt this instant connection with producer Jarvis Taverniere (of Woods, prod. Whitney & Purple Mountains) Recalls Sam: “Jarvis saw me play a set at Golddiggers with Justin Sullivan and offered to record me. We met and talked about it and he seemed to be on the same page about how to treat the songs. Jarvis pushed me to make some of the songs a little more accessible and would hear a hook in someone's playing and have them lay it down. He has a great ear and would come up with great melodic bass parts on the spot.” He spent a month and a half last year playing pre-quarantine guitar for Jess Williamson's band all over Europe for her record, Cosmic Wink. The rollicking horn-laden track its inspiration from Dante and Beatrice's love and “the concept of courtly love,” according to Sullivan. “A journey to hell, the pursuit of art, the Shangri-Las, and finding peace in what is, not how we think things should be.” The video for the track sees Sullivan fleeing directors Jeff Davenport and Cooper Kenward, sprinting through the streets of LA. “I think we just wanted to offer a sense of escape and abandon that comes with both loving someone and also surrendering our attachment to a certain outcome in regards to that love,” Sullivan explains. “I'm just trying to get at the proper expression of a feeling; in this case, a deep yearning. So I think visually, you want to complement that sense. A desire to see and feel everything and escape from the smallness of your own thoughts.” Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Corona.

Thank you Jim Dudukovich! In this episode we talk about cool bands and stories, like how our guest sat in on drums with the Circle Jerks in New York because Chuck Biscuits, the drummer, wasn't able to play and our guest knew all their songs.Jack Rabid is the publisher and creative genius behind "The Big Takeover," a bi-annual music magazine published out of New York City, going on 42 years now.  It reads like a music encyclopedia or mix tape guidebook, including 60-80 pages of album reviews written by Jack himself.  Jack's a drummer and vocalist and has played in a number of bands.  And he's a veteran of the “punk era,” emanating from New York City.  But mostly, he's a music lover.  This interview kicks right in, mid conversation, with us talking about Jack's softball game that he just got home from.  I ended up just hitting record, 86'ing the formalities of a “hello,” and rolling tape.  No one talks about music like Jack Rabid.  Here we go…======================== BAND REFERENCES IN THIS EPISODE! ======================== Talking Heads, XTC, Ramones, Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass, Tony Bennett, Sinatra, Xavier Cugat, Death Cab for Cutie, Deep Sea Diver, Wire, Springhouse (Jack's band), Leaving Trains (Jack played with them), Chills, Nirvana, Belly, Velocity Girl, Throwing Muses, REM, Even Worse (Jack's Band), Last Burning Embers (Jack's Band), Beatles, Circle Jerks, Legal Weapon, Saccharin Trust, Naked Ray Gun, Big Black, The Effigies, Blood Sport, Fastbacks, Hüsker Dü, The Screamers, The Dells, Engelbert Humperdinck, Glen Campbell, Dionne Warwick, Jimi Hendrix, Blondie, Television, Strawberry Alarm Clock, Velvet Underground, Mothers of Invention, MC5, The Cars, The Police, Bad Brains, Henry Rollins, Ian MacKaye, James Brown, The Who, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Killers, Otis Redding, Sam and Dave, The Undertones, X, The Mutants, The Zeros, DOA, The Subhumans, The Dead Kennedys, The Stimulators, Mad, Iggy Pop, the Cramps, Link Wray, Professor Longhair, The Ruts, Sham 69, The Damned, Dead Boys, Buzzcocks, Justin Sullivan, New Model Army, The Neats, Wipers, Catherine Wheel, Radiohead, Louis Armstrong, Jimmy Rogers, Gene Autry, Max Romeo, Stooges, Heartbreakers, New York Dolls, The Adverts, The Everly Brothers, Love, Carl Perkins, Oscar Peterson, Hank Williams, Stephen Foster, Blasters, The Undertones, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Howlin' Wolf, Joy Formidable, David Bowie, Brian Eno, Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, Cheetah Chrome, John Lydon, Captain Beefheart, Ruts DC, The Gas, Joe Pernice, Bevis Frond, The Who, The Byrds, Bo Diddley, Ike and Tina Turner, Lesley Gore, Marvin Gaye, Ray Charles, Fats Domino, Billy Bragg, Colin Hay, Connie Smith, and George Jones.========================THE BIG TAKEOVER- Website:  https://bigtakeover.com/- Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BigTakeover/ - Instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/bigtakeovermag/?hl=en- Radio Show:  https://bigtakeover.com/radio/ ========================BRENTON HUND PODCAST   - Facebook:  http://www.facebook.com/brentonhundpodcast- Instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/brentonhundpodcast/- YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/========================SOCIAL MEDIA BY:  https://www.socialsweetheart.coLOGO DESIGN BY: https://taylorhembree1993.wixsite.com/ohokmedia

“Rip Tides And Clean Horizons" With his band New Model Army, Justin Sullivan has put out 15 fabulous albums, including such legendary efforts like 1986's The Ghost Of Cain, 1993's The Love Of Hopeless Causes and 2019's From Here. Formed in West Yorkshire in 1980, New Model Army have turned out a bit like The Fall—hard to categorize, defiantly original and boasting a revolving door of so many members, we could do a podcast on their personnel, alone. Back in the '80s New Model Army were one of those bands that everyone liked and every group claimed. Goths, mods, metalhead and college rock kids all thought New Model Army were in their camp, but the fact was, New Model Army were in everyone's camp. They were versatile that way—and part of that versatility was the way that they stretched the intersectionality of their own music—there were bits of metal and punk and goth and folk in their musical attack and that was what led to their widespread appeal. Career highlights? Oh, they've got those. John Peel loved them, they bumped the Smiths from the top slot on the indie charts in '84, they played the Reading Festival and even opened a gig for Bowie. Sullivan's new solo album—only his second one overall—is called Surrounded and it's a stirring effort, filled with introspective Viking ballads and plaintive musings on human nature. He plays with depth and finesse and has quietly turned in one of the best records of 2021. In this chat, Sullivan talks to Alex about how he feels about birthdays and band anniversaries, traveling in the Middle East and why the lockdown made everyone a more extreme version of themselves. www.newmodelarmy.org www.bombshellradio.com www.alexgreenonline.com Twitter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

New Model Army with Justin Sullivan in conversation with David Eastaugh  New Model Army are an English rock band formed in Bradford, West Yorkshire, in 1980 by lead singer, guitarist and main composer Justin Sullivan, bassist Stuart Morrow and drummer Phil Tompkins. Sullivan has been the only continuous member of the band, which has seen numerous line-up changes in its 39-year history. Their music draws on influences across the musical spectrum, from punk and folk to soul, metal and classical. Sullivan’s lyrics, which range from directly political through to spiritual and personal, have always been considered as a key part of the band’s appeal. By the time they began making their first records in 1983, Robert Heaton, a former drum technician for Hawkwind, had replaced Tompkins. Whilst having their roots in punk rock, the band have always been difficult to categorise. In 1999, when asked about this, Sullivan said "We've been labelled as punks, post-punks, Goth, metal, folk – the lot, but we've always been beyond those style confines". Following a large turnover of personnel, both permanent and as touring members, as of August 2017 New Model Army comprise Sullivan, Dean White (keyboards and guitar), Michael Dean (drums), Marshall Gill (guitar) and Ceri Monger (bass). The band were formed in Bradford, West Yorkshire in the autumn of 1980, taking their name from the army established by Parliament during the English Civil War, and played their first concert in Bradford in October, playing songs based on their shared love of punk rock and Northern soul. Until the mid-1980s, Sullivan used the alter ego of "Slade the Leveller" (Levellers being a radical political movement of the 1640s), supposedly so that he would not lose his unemployment benefits if the authorities realized he was making money from music. They continued to gig around the United Kingdom with little recognition, but in 1983 released their first singles "Bittersweet" and "Great Expectations" on Abstract Records, and were given airplay by Radio 1's John Peel. In February 1984, they were invited to play on popular music show The Tube, being introduced by presenter Muriel Gray as "the ugliest band in rock and roll". The producers of the show however were concerned about the lyrics of "Vengeance", which the band were due to perform ("I believe in justice / I believe in vengeance / I believe in getting the bastards") and so the band played "Christian Militia". Following this performance, the band's first mini-album Vengeance reached Number 1 in the UK independent chart in early 1984, pushing The Smiths from that position. After a further single "The Price" also reached a high placing in the independent charts, the band were signed by major label EMI.

Today's guest is Justin Sullivan the driving force behind one of my favorite bands New Model Army. Having him on my podcast is a dream come true, and I am so grateful that he sat down with me to do this interview. The first time when I got to know New Model Army was when they were playing at the Forestglade festival in Austria. I was 15 years old and was fascinated by their music and their performance. Even my parents who picked me up from the concert liked their music and we visited New Model Army shows together in the next upcoming years. I had seen NMA in concert for more than ten times and this year it happened that we worked together when they were playing a show in Vienna. This event was one of the experiences when you know that all the struggles you go after as a concert photographer are all worth it. Working together with a band that helped me through the good and the bad times in the last 20 years and then getting the opportunity to work with them is the most rewarding feeling you can get as a music photographer. In this interview, Justin talks about the successes and struggles in the last 36 years of New Model Army. He gives insights into the life of a professional musician and how to survive in the music business nowadays. It´s an inspirational journey from someone who has a deep understanding of the music scene and a life experience we all can learn from.

Interview: Orphans and Vandals

“Do you ever get the urge to run, run get gone gone/and a lot of things get abandoned along the way don’t they?!”“With a lot of the produced music you hear, its hard to hear the real person in it” points out Orphans and Vandals intriguing front man Al Joshua “I was really keen to keep it more alive: that's why we did the album ourselves in our front rooms, we set up the microphones and that's were we recorded ‘Strays’ and ‘Terra Firma.” The genesis of London based multi-instrumental five piece Orphans and Vandals was borne of Joshua’s similarly frustrating fruitless musical situation, the grind of playing in dead end bands peddling the same old same old, constrained by the hackneyed melodies repeated every night in the same clichéd form. Orphans and Vandals front man AL Joshua talks passionately about a band that changed his life, its birth inspired by a trip from London to Paris – his own pilgrimage to retrace the footsteps of poet Arthur Rimbaud. With this new found lust for escape he let himself off the leash, starting to record songs that ”we're for him” Joshua explains "I wrote and recorded the first few ‘Christopher’ and ‘Headful of Tears’ in my house at the beginning, and just gave it away when people asked for it. ...They were done my bathroom, our neighbours were constantly on cocaine fuelled porn marathons, and I liked to keep the sounds that fall through the cracks in the background...This release of creative freedom saw him giving away these nascent recordings to anyone who asked, and was swiftly followed by the union with Orphans and Vandals bassist and song writing partner Raven. They then set out with a rough idea of what they wanted from the remaining members Francesca and Quinta on strings, percussion and glockenspiel, and Gabi on drums that would form the crux of a very different kind of sophisticated rock band, one that attempts to skew expectations of form, meter, and song. A spontaneity of creative process that big label bands who take months to produce and over dub, to over think to quite frankly shine shit before its ready for your mass consumption might baulk at, thus all Orphans and Vandals sessions were recorded live: 'I like to keep the mistakes in the recordings most of my favourite albums have them.' Joshua notes 'the thing with producing is you only get exactly what you planned on doing, there’s no accidents that bring in unexpecteds, I try and leave room for slight accidents or random chance.' Maybe that's why the songs he written in the last eighteen months documented in their superb debut album ‘I am Alive You Are Dead’ stand out so much in a sea of rock pastiche, skinny boys with their guitars, and vacuous two dimensional 80s revivalists, they live and breath with life, snippets of dreamlike imagery, brutal autobiography, literary couplets and warm instrumentals that rattle with aggression, melancholia and euphoria: a reflection of the people that crafted them and the modern world that seeks to suck the humanity from our veins. The album’s finest moment is the emotionally exhausting epic ten-minute symphony Mysterious Skin, which is stupendous and life affirming. Cinematic instrumentation that rises and falls like the wild tide, below Joshua's sprawling stream of consciousness. It pierces your heart and calls to mind the seedy urban poetry of Lou Reed, the sexual ambiguity of Rimbaud, and the half spoken/half sung working class humanism of Jarvis Cocker, moving from intricate emotional details to the huge foreboding underbelly of the city, back to a stranger's bed (a boy or a girl? Who knows.) Toward a literal sexual climax, into sky scraping chanted refrains, propelling rambunctious rhythm sections, huge stirring violins musical saw, and harmonium, flailing to a cacophony. The twitching opener Strays hints at the satellite town frustration of New Model Army singer Justin Sullivan: and the stirringly life affirming choral epics of the Arcade Fire. Their last double aside single Terra Firma/Christopher from Summer '08 confirmed the strength of their material - plaintive, pared back, Bowie-esque balladry telling tales of urban decay fleshing out characters that seethe with passion, anger and disenchantment. The wonderful twinkling instrumentals of ‘Argyle Square’ gently opens its eyes, and onto London’s streets, where dizzying images of the past and present collide. While closer ‘Head full of tears’ shows another side a downtuned, intimate, delicacy. The Arcade Fire and Pulp have often been drawn as modern comparisons, maybe a resurgence in the intelligent lyrics of Cocker, and the acceptance of multi instrumental groups like the Arcade Fire might mean there’s more of a place for Orphans and Vandals right now, but Joshua surprisingly reveals to “not listening to bands at the moment, I’m bored of all that at the moment” he claims to have never heard the Canadian troupe and even the references to Pulp leaves him a little cold “I couldn’t stand any of that Britpop stuff really.”A veracious consumer of poets like the aforementioned Rimbaud, the songs of William Blake, the work of William Burroughs, a year spent obsessing over Francis Bacon, the sheer literary quality of his lyrics, shifting effortlessly from dreamlike, to intricate detail, and back to naked brazen honesty of the kind that you rarely here within popular music. Listen to their superb debut album, and it’s best moments Strays, Terra Firma, Christopher and Mysterious Skin you'd be forgiven for thinking that Al Joshua painstakingly, constructs each lyrical piece before he enters the studio, but like everything else about Orphans and Vandals the creative process is spontaneous and led by an instinct to keep it alive, to keep it fresh to the ears ”Everything has got to be one in one take or one performance, unlike mass produced that is the finished product whereas I've got no interest in the finished product at all: I'm more interested in the process. That was the performance of that day, if it was recorded another time it could sound very different, its all on instinct and chance.”This is reflected in their raucous ever evolving live performances, where sometimes not even the band know what journey the next song is going to take them next: ”Every time we play a song live its different, plus I like to change it up, play with the band, it keeps it fresh They're all brilliant musicians and It keeps us all on our toes. Nobody knows what’s going to happen, if we fuck up a small part of a song nine or ten times, the tenth time could be really special… We’ve been booed before but how often do you get the opportunity?” Central to the Orphans and Vandals experience is Al Joshua’s unique vocal style: a starkly original new voice combined with emotionally complex streams of consciousness, a half spoken, half sung Estuary English it’s a style that allows him freedom to roam within, and astride his band's multi-layered oscillating orchestral sound, it’s drawn favourable comparisons with some of his own musical touch points Lou Reed, Bob Dylan and Steve Reich, for him it's all about turning himself on and challenging the listeners preconceptions of the rock vocal, his approach inspired by poets and the spoken word: ”That’s the thing that keeps it interesting singing and using your voice in a different way, listening to(Jack)Kerouac reading his poems set to music I'd just listen to him without any real interest in what he was saying..., when you hear someone with a real interesting voice you can here the melodic metre, you get all the tonal things and all the notes between the tracks, which you aren't going to get on a standard rock song.” Some lyricists like to create oblique imagery, allowing you to draw your own conclusions, or characters they can hide behind, Joshua’s work is intimate yet spliced with imagery, yet he is reticent about defining it, preferring to keep the mystery (get the pun?) behind the words, leaving you the listener to draw your own conclusions. “I would never be interested in writing a autobiography, it’s certainly intimate ... It’s like putting yourself out there naked at times, there are plenty of images and I suppose you could call certain things true. But everything becomes a movie once it’s written down, everything becomes a lie the moment someone talks about it.”Orphans and Vandals are a rapidly emerging band you must hear in 2009, an act that will challenge your preconceptions of what a modern rock band can be. Creating music of the street, thrillingly dangerous, sometimes brutal yet rather like life intensely beautiful and human all at the same time. Looking to the future, Joshua excitingly reveals that’s he’s already constructing songs that will make up their next record ‘When we’ve finished with this album I’ll get back to writing. The songs I’ve started are quite different. I suppose they will decide how we’re going to play them’ and he’s aware of not repeating a formula, though ‘I don’t want it to be the same. They’re quite different everyone in the band plays various instruments and is capable of reinventing themselves.’ We look forward to the journeys they will take us all on next …The Orphans and Vandals album 'I am Alive You Are Dead’ is out now on Fourth Floor. All content syndicated from http://wwwg.odisinthetvzine.co.uk
