In this episode, we explore the often silent battle with sexual and porn addiction. Our guest, Patrick, holds a Master's degree in counseling from Moody Theological Seminary-Michigan, specializing in the intersection of psychology, therapy, and theology. He is a licensed professional counselor in Michigan with a focus on sexual addiction since 2020.Patrick is affiliated with various professional organizations such as the American Counseling Association (ACA), AACC Professional Life Coach Certification, Green Cross Member of Traumatology (GCAT), Gottman Level 1 trained, Michigan Counselors Association (MCA), and the American Association of Christian Counselors (AACC).Today's discussion marks the first part of a two-part series delving into the complexities of porn and sex addiction, topics often brushed aside due to societal taboos. Despite its prevalence, many individuals hesitate to seek help for fear of judgment or ostracization.Statistics from Psychology Today reveal that the average age of first exposure to porn is 13, setting the stage for a potential lifelong struggle. Shockingly, around 80% of men and 30% of women (45% when considering women who watch with their partners) engage with porn on a weekly basis. It's crucial to recognize that sexual and porn addiction is more widespread than commonly acknowledged. Our aim in discussing this issue is to break the silence, provide education, and extend resources to those grappling with this addiction. In my conversation with Patrick we discussWhat causes porn addictionHow to tell if you're a sex addict and or porn addictHow social media affects or promotes porn addictionHow therapy can help with recoveryHow emotions and mental health correlate with compulsive sexual behaviorsHow porn addiction affects romantic relationships and, How faith and religion play a role in recovery Where to find Patrick/resources: https://northpoint.buzzsprout.com/www.northpoint-counseling.comwww.treatsexualaddiction.comhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/patrick-eilers-ma-lpc-csat-310036b9/Instagram: rated_pgeTime stamps: 0:00 Intro/Exploring Porn and Sex Addiction14:02 Understanding Factors Influencing Sexual Behavior20:47 Navigating Relationships and Sexual Addiction26:45 Navigating Betrayal and Trauma in Relationships37:10 Brain Pathways and Overcoming Addictive Behaviors42:06 Understanding Addiction and Triggers54:20 Overcoming Shame and Embracing Identity1:02:11 Outro*IF OUR CONTENT IS VALUABLE TO YOU, PLEASE RATE AND REVIEW THE SHOW*Instagram: @awordtothewisepodYoutube: A Word To The Wise PodcastEmail: awordtothewisepod@gmail.com

It's easy to lose sight of the main priorities in our lives. Things such as stress, fear, comparison, and so much more can rob and distract us from the joy, contentment, and gratitude we were created for. However, Thanksgiving can be a great time to bring clarity to what's most important and truly give thanks for those things. To help us do that very thing, my dad, Dr. Tim Clinton will be joining us today to share a unique perspective on how we can begin viewing this special annual celebration differently. Dr. Tim Clinton is the President of the American Association of Christian Counselors (AACC), the largest and most diverse Christian counseling association in the world as well as the Executive Director of the Global Center for Mental Health, Addiction, and Recovery at Liberty University. A renowned author, licensed professional counselor, and marriage and family therapist, Dr. Clinton is recognized as a world leader in mental health and relationship issues and spends much of his time working with Christian leaders and professional athletes. Throughout this conversation, Dr. Tim will give us an easy-to-remember meaning of the word “THANKS,” helping us understand the significance of the Thanksgiving holiday, recognizing the impact gratitude can have on our mental and spiritual health and wellness, as well as refocus our attitude and attention toward that of gratitude and praise. For remember, because of what God has already done by sending His Son to pay a substitutionary death in our place and rising again 3 days later, defeating sin and defeating death so we could spend eternity with Him - My friends, even if He does nothing else, He's already done enough! For that we will always have something to be grateful for! So don't eat too much, but also don't miss the moments God has for you this holiday season! We pray you have a blessed and happy Thanksgiving!Dr. Tim Clinton's website: https://timclinton.com/ Dr. Tim's most recent book, “Focus on the Future”: https://www.amazon.com/Focus-Future-Your-Voice-Matters-ebook/dp/B07TWCH3P2 AACC's website: www.aacc.net

Annette Oltmans, the founder of The M3ND Project, returns to the show to discuss Double Abuse®. Together, we explore what Double Abuse® is and how it can exacerbate the trauma a victim is already experiencing from their abuser.   Double Abuse® happens when seeking help becomes a harmful encounter, where instead of supporting you, a person belittles your experience or disregards what you are telling them about your abuser.  When you are in the middle of trauma, you need someone who will say, “I've got you,” understands what you are going through, and can help advocate for you.   We created this episode because it is important to: understand what Double Abuse® is,  know what to do if you think it's happening to you, and learn how others can be safe people for you.  Featured topics include: Understanding covert emotional abuse and its destruction (4:15) Double Abuse®: what it is and how it exacerbates a victim's trauma (15:48) Why it's important for victims to recognize when Double Abuse® is happening to them so they can gently exit the conversation and find a new circle of support (24:24) Some examples of Double Abuse® in the media (34:29) How to support and show up for a victim using the healing model of compassion (37:36) You cannot take care of yourself if you are being traumatized by Double Abuse® (52:08) Learn more about Annette Oltmans: Annette Oltmans is a philanthropist and passionate human rights advocate. Annette's personal experiences of prolonged emotional abuse in marriage and her extensive journey of recovery including comprehensive field research into the topics of Original Abuse and Double Abuse® ignited her passion to founding The M3ND Project in 2016. While seeking the help of professionals and responders, she experienced Double Abuse® in the form of spiritual and institutional abuse. These harmful encounters compelled Annette in her relentless pursuit for solutions that involved interviews with hundreds of victims and survivors. She uncovered common threads that cause victims prolonged states of confusion as well as what ultimately led them towards healing. Her journey also involved interviews with hundreds of faith-based leaders and therapists which led her to discover that most are untrained and ill-equipped to identify and help victims of emotional, verbal, and psychological abuse. In working to prevent and remediate such harm, Annette developed protocoled models that are now being taught and implemented with therapists, churches and professional organizations across the United States. She consulted with esteemed experts in abuse, trauma, and healing to ensure the materials align with the highest professional standards. Annette also serves on the Board of Pepperdine University's Boone Center for the Family and is a Board of Trustee member of Northrise University in Zambia. Her writing on these topics of abuse, domestic violence, and bullying has been published in the American Association of Christian Counselors (AACC), Teen Vogue, and numerous other publications. What does the church think about mental health? In this first episode of 2023, Caroline has a discussion with a long-time friend that addresses one of the main purposes of the Mental Health and Faith podcast — taking a closer look at mental health and the church. Their conversation includes the following topics: How does the church address mental health? Or does it? What is the difference between long-term mental illness and situational mental health conditions? Situational vs. clinical conditions from medicalnewstoday.com. “Situational depression occurs after life-altering events, but clinical or major depression has a range of causes and is a longer-term condition.” Definition of situational depression from verywellmind.com. “Situational depression involves symptoms of depression that are related to stress. It is not a recognized clinical disorder but is an informal term used to describe what may be more formally diagnosed as a type of adjustment disorder.” Information on situational conditions from Nami.org. “Situational stress can generate emotional or behavioral symptoms that look and feel very much like clinical depression. Depending on the degree of symptomatic discomfort, the treatment plan for situational or stress-related symptoms may be supportive or psychoeducational in nature and often includes the teaching of simple coping tools (find some below) that can help combat the impact of everyday stress. Remember that certain types of anxiety and sadness are often a normal response to difficult or overwhelming circumstances.” What can the church to do meet the mental health needs and other needs of church members and the community? For one: they will have setbacks but still show longstanding evidence of change (40:00) Communication problems are not the core issue of abusive relationships (46:39) Learn more about Annette Oltmans: Annette Oltmans is a philanthropist and passionate human rights advocate. New Book- Take It Back: Reclaiming Biblical Manhood for the Sake of Marriage, Family, and Culture by Dr. Tim Clinton Tim Clinton nails it with the subject of his new book, "Take It Back: Reclaiming Biblical Manhood for the Sake of Marriage, Family, and Culture."  The Eric Metaxas Show About the book- Take It Back: Reclaiming Biblical Manhood for the Sake of Marriage, Family, and Culture by Dr. Tim Clinton and Max Davis. April 6, 2021 Our culture is determined to redefine masculinity as something it was never meant to be. The American Psychological Association asserts that “traditional masculinity is psychologically harmful.” Many agree that “forcing men to behave in accordance with the worst stereotypes of manliness harms them, and it harms others.” But is the answer then to marginalize and feminize men? Despite culture's determination to redefine masculinity, the great heart cry of our day is for men to rise up and take back their rightful place. It's a cry that echoes deep in the soul and from all ends of our society, and particularly from the women who love their fathers, husbands, brothers, and sons. Most women want their men to be honored and to stand up and be men. Men have faltered and lost a lot of influence and territory. The good news is that for many who struggle there is often a daily yearning to make it right. The reality is, masculinity is not and never was “toxic.” Tim Clinton, president of the American Association of Christian Counselors (AACC), challenges readers to reject culture's redefinition and seek biblical examples of true manhood. Fast-paced, filled with relevant biblical and contemporary stories of godly men like David, Nehemiah, George Foreman, and Tim Tebow, Take It Back empowers men to be who God created them to be and to impact the culture that is in desperate need of their influence. Readers will find encouragement and affirmation that they matter as men, that they can be difference-makers in their circles of influence and have a positive impact on the culture. They will find grace for their shame over past mistakes and find the ability to move forward. This book will help you find encouragement and affirmation that you matter as a man, that you can be a difference-maker in your circle of influence and have a positive impact on the culture. You will find grace to overcome your shame over past mistakes and find the ability to move forward. HELP ACU SPREAD THE WORD!  Forward this show to friends. On today's episode, Zach interviews former college football star and motivational speaker, Inky Johnson. September 9, 2006. It started as a normal college football game in Neyland Stadium. If anything, the event was an afterthought, dropped into the schedule at the last minute. For Inky Johnson, though, the game changed everything. A routine tackle turned into a life-threatening injury, and nothing has been normal for Inky ever since. Not with a paralyzed right arm. Not with daily pain. Not with constant physical challenges. His dream had always been to play professional sports. You might think his injury would have destroyed his motivation and crushed his spirit. But that’s only because you don’t know Inky.Who is Inquoris “Inky” Johnson? He could be described as the survivor of an underprivileged past. He could be described as a refugee of poverty and violence. He could be described as a success story stained by tragedy. But if you look deeper, you’ll discover something else. You’ll see a man who looks in the face of defeat and says, “Am I really failing, or is God prevailing?” You’ll see a man gripped by the promise that God has purposes and plans far beyond our own. And you’ll be inspired by his relentless determination, which he loves to impart to others through his dramatic story.Inky has a master’s degree in sports psychology from the University of Tennessee. He devotes much of his time to mentoring athletes and underprivileged youth. He and his amazing wife Allison live in Atlanta, Georgia with their beautiful children, Jada and Inky Jr.Motivation or Inspiration?“Motivation” is often nothing more than forcing people to do something they don’t really want to do. In contrast, inspiration affects people from within, giving them the ability to accomplish what would otherwise be impossible. Through his walk and his talk, Inky embodies and imparts a truly inspirational message. Not that Inky’s injury turned him into an inspiration. It just showed the world the inspirational life he’s been living all along. Executives, sports teams, church members, and young people all benefit from the raw energy of his charismatic speaking. Whether the topic is leadership, teamwork, or perseverance, Inky inspires his audiences to embrace the challenges of life.Find out more at inkyjohnson.comAlso, on our "House Call" segment of the show, Dr. Tim Clinton will answer a question from one of you. Tim Clinton, Ed.D, LPC, LMFT, is the President of the American Association of Christian Counselors (AACC), the largest and most diverse Christian counseling association in the world. Today we get to sit down with our show’s host, Christopher McCluskey, PCC, for part two of his inspiring story. In the previous podcast, Christopher McCluskey talked about the challenges and obstacles he faced after shutting down his successful counseling practice to move his wife and children cross-country to the family farm and launch a private coaching practice. Shortly after relocating, Chris was struck by a debilitating illness that took years to diagnose. He entered a “dark night of the soul” that took a toll on both he and his family. But instead of allowing difficult circumstances to harden their hearts, they served to strengthen their faith and resolve. During these difficult years, God inscribed valuable life lessons on Chris’ heart, which he shares with us today. Chris identifies five critical beliefs that shaped his life and decisions during these years: Discern your life’s call and listen to the song of your heart. Count the cost and do your due diligence when launching your coaching business and in honoring your values. Commit for the long haul. After putting your hand to the plow, resist the temptation to look back (Luke 9:62). Persevere through the dark times and allow nothing to deter you from God’s plan and purpose for you, both personally and professionally. Work creatively and collaboratively. Say, “Lord, show me something fresh here.” Ask, “Collaboratively, who else can help me?” How might these key takeaways mold your life and coaching practice? Until next time, keep Raising the Standard and Changing the World!   About Chris McCluskey PCC   Often cited as ‘The Father of Christian Coaching’, Chris is a visionary thought leader who pioneered this field in the late 1990s through journal articles, conferences, keynotes, and as a founding board member of both the Christian Coaches Network and Christian Coaching Magazine. He served as a primary consultant and contributor to Dr. Gary Collins in his ground-breaking text, “Christian Coaching: Helping Others Turn Potential Into Reality” (2001, NavPress). In 1998, Chris transitioned entirely out of his ownership of the largest Christian psychotherapy practice in Tampa Bay (Christian Care Counseling Centers, Inc.) into full time coaching as a solo practitioner in his new business, Coaching for Christian Living, Inc. In the year 2000, he established a Christian track at the Institute for Life Coach Training which grew over that decade into the Professional Christian Coaching Program (precursor to PCCI). He has presented at more than 50 national & international conferences including the Christian Management Association (CMA), the American Association of Christian Counselors (AACC), the Christian Association for Psychological Studies (CAPS), the Association for Marriage & Family Ministries (AMFM) and the Christian Coaches Network (CCN). A prolific writer, he and his wife, Rachel are best-selling authors of the highly-acclaimed marriage book, When Two Become One (Revell, 2004, 2006), and have co-authored chapters in several popular Christian books. Today we have the privilege of sitting down with our show’s host, Christopher McCluskey, to hear his story as he has dared to answer the song of his heart, a song placed there by God. Raised in a healthy Christian family, Chris was blessed beyond measure, but that didn’t mean his path would be without countless challenges and overwhelming obstacles to answering God’s call on his life—a call that has not only touched his professional and personal life but also the lives of thousands. Chris’s story offers important life lessons we could all learn from: The importance of honoring the song God has placed in your heart Choosing to persevere in the face of adversity Committing to running and finishing the race God has set before you Sacrificing short-term pleasures for long-term gains How a supportive family or community help us weather life’s storms And more… Be sure to tune in for part two of Chris’ story next week and learn how the worst—and the best—was yet to come. So, if we're truly going to model the love of Christ to our kids, we must find the balance between truth and grace—and that's after we've properly defined and understood the terms. Are you confused yet? Well today, we'll find the love in discipline and that balance between truth and grace—a formula that will increase your chances of a successful parent/child relationship. Our guest, Dan Seaborn is the director of the marriage and family division of the American Association of Christian Counselors (AACC) and the founder of Winning At Home, an organization that produces media resources and hosts special events to develop marriages and families. He has authored 12 books with his latest work being Parenting with Grace and Truth. Dan has been a featured speaker at various churches and large-scale events such as Promise Keepers weekends, AACC conferences, and university assemblies. He has earned recognition as a powerful and passionate communicator. He has established himself as a media personality on West Michigan television and on national radio. Prior to founding Winning At Home, Dan served as a Pastor of Student Ministries and then as Pastor of Family Life. He and his wife Jane have four children and live in West Michigan. Why Parents Must Find the Balance Between Truth and Grace Because of the parent/child relationship with our kids, at times, we may feel we can say and do things that don't require us to think things through very deeply. Though what we may have to say to our children may be true, we can diminish the importance of our words by neglecting the grace needed to articulate this truth to our kids. It's like we can almost take our kids for granted sometimes. Essentially, as a result, we may let a foolish method overshadow a wise principle. This is very easy to do. I explain some examples that I have experienced in my parenting with guest Dan Seaborn as we discuss the following: The purpose behind Dan's book Parenting with Grace and Truth. How do we find the balance between truth and grace. What are some common traps behind “grace based” parenting. The number one advice that Dan Seaborn can give you for parenting. What are “rules to die for.” How to regain lost ground.
