Our conversation with Bill Loucks went around the perception cops have on hemp and cannabis, how consumers and businesses in the industry can contribute to a safer use and what further is there to do about a broader awareness of hemp. Bill started with a couple stories that led to his mindset switch from regarding hemp as a dangerous substance to becoming a commodity. Moving on, Bill shared his view on law enforcement pointing out that most police officers are unaware of the difference between hemp and cannabis, which leads to confusion and also strengthens stereotypes. Following the latter, he listed best practice tips for consumers and businesses in the hemp industry, to support the authorities to determine the legality of the product being used or manufactured. For growers, he explained why it is important to communicate with the police on harvest season. Bill finished with his consideration on the next step in the transition to greater social acceptance around hemp-derived products. You can reach out to Bill at www.HempCops.com or Bill@hempcops.com to get further guidance and information on training programs. Who is William "Bill" Loucks? Podcast Show Notes with Dr. Byrareddy The entire world is looking for a solution to Coronavirus. And for good reason. As of early August 2020, 706,000 people have died from COVID-19 worldwide. In the United States alone, 160,000 people have died since the beginning of March 2020. Many researchers are putting in many hours of good work trying to figure out a solution. One of these scientists is Dr. Siddappa Byrareddy from the University of Nebraska Medical Center. We centered our conversation around his scientific article SARS-CoV2 induced respiratory distress: Can cannabinoids be added to anti-viral therapies to reduce lung inflammation? Dr. Siddappa Byrareddy, one of the authors, agreed to expand on his findings for the listeners of the Hemp Startup Journey. Not having a research background, I had many questions for Dr. Byrareddy to understand how CBD and cannabis can help COVID-induced lung inflammation. Podcast Show Notes with Daniel Shortt A few days ago I saw an email slide into my inbox. My first though when I saw the title was, "No, this must be a joke." The title was too intriguing to not read it. So I did. The next day, the article's author and I were on the phone discussing the topic and decided to share a lengthier conversation for you to digest. The author is attorney Daniel Shortt and the title of the article that peaked my curiosity: It's Time To Disband The DEA. Daniel suggests that the DEA, a 50-year old organization that has been an integral part of the US government, with a $3 billion budget and over 10,000 employees, should no longer exist. After my initial shock at his brazenness subsided, I was able to understand Daniel's two key arguments as reasons why the DEA should not exist anymore: The DEA contributes to a systemic racist policing system The DEA has not been effective at curtailing drug use or drug supply While Daniel holds a strong opinion, his main intent is to create a conversation about the DEA's role in our country and how drug use should be properly addressed. Another deviation from the normal hemp and cannabis topics. I believe in taking care of our physical and mental health during this time of quarantine crisis. While we figure out the best strategies for our businesses and industry, it's important for us to find strategies that keep us physically active and having a mindset that keeps us moving towards positivity and away from negativity. My friend Courtney Sanford (Registered Nurse, CrossFit Coach, Precision Nutrition Sports Nutritionist) joins the Hemp Startup Journey podcast to discuss all things wellness while during COVID-19 quarantine. Courtney shares how to think about indulging (you don't have to avoid it), simple food-plating strategies, how she's choosing to physically move at home, what active athletes can do when they can't access the gym, and lots more to help you stay active, healthy and sane. About Courtney Sanford There is so much information out right now about different fitness programs, diets, weight loss gimmicks, Instagram models flashing boobs and butts, so many 30 day cleanses/challenges – it's honestly tough to look at. But, all of this noise doesn't make cultivating the healthiest version of yourself any less important, it just makes it trickier to figure out what ‘health' looks like for YOU. I see what happens when people choose to ignore creating healthy, sustainable habits every day in my job as a nurse, and it's is depressing because, while not all disease is preventable, a good majority of it is. It comes down to the small daily decisions we make. My hope is to give individuals the wellness tools they need to become the most optimal version of themselves so that I can avoid seeing them as a patient in a hospital bed later on. About Emma Chasen Emma Chasen has a mission to educate people on the science behind Cannabis so that they may take charge of their own healing. After graduating from Brown University in 2014 with a degree in Medicinal Plant Research, Emma went on to coordinate Clinical Oncology trials with the Brown University Oncology Research Group. When her supervisor refused a Cannabis trial in favor of another expensive pharmaceutical drug, Emma quit and headed across the country to Portland, OR. She found her way to Farma, the popular Portland dispensary that takes a more scientific approach to Cannabis; rejecting the Indica/Sativa binary and instead focusing on chemotypes to determine effect. She began her career at Farma as a budtender and was quickly promoted to General Manager and eventually to Director of Education. In this role she was able to focus on educational efforts and create a robust training curriculum that focused on cannabis science, product knowledge and empathetic patient care. Emma now co-owns and operates Eminent Consulting, a cannabis consulting business that offers educational training and craft industry development for cannabis industry professionals and businesses. She helps brands develop educational marketing collateral and ongoing educational programs to further elevate their brand presence in a competitive industry. She also helps struggling and newly emerging cannabis businesses with business organization and sets them up for success in both the competitive medical and adult use markets. Emma was named Portland's Best Budtender of 2016 and featured in Newsweek, MG Magazine, Forbes, High Times Magazine, The Centennial, The Oregon Leaf and Teen Vogue for her work with cannabis education. She is also a regular guest on many cannabis focused podcasts and has been featured on television for her ability to explain scientific concepts around cannabis in a way that is accessible and helpful to the general public. https://www.eminentconsultingfirm.com/ https://www.instagram.com/echasen/?hl=en Episode Notes 00:00 Emma Chasen Intro and context about the purpose of this episode 6:30 Emma Chasen's answer to "What do you do?" 8:30 What is hemp? 9:00 Why is hemp limited to .3% THC and marijuana at greater than .3% THC 11:00 Craft hemp 13:30 Does .3% THC cause psychotropic effects in people 15:00 What is psychoactive? 15:30 What is psychotropic? 16:00 Is CBD psychoactive or psychotropic? 17:00 CBD, full-spectrum and its influence on the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) 17:30 What is the purpose of the Endocannabinoid system (ECS)? 17:45 What does CBD need to engage our ECS 18:00 Is there value of taking CBD alone (CBD isolate) 18:44 What is the ECS which was discovered in the 1990s? 19:00 The ECS is involved in all parts of our body 19:45 Cannabinoid receptors 21:00 Clinical Endocannabinoid Deficiency 22:00 Is there a test for ECS deficiency? 27:00 Looking at the chemical compounds of hemp 29:00 Major and minor hemp cannabinoids 29:45 What are terpenes? 33:00 The Entourage Effect 34:00 Flavonoids, polyphenols 35:00 A powerful CBD combination to prevent seizures CBD + THCA + Linalool 36:00 CBD + terpenes as an appetite suppressant 37:00 How to understand the therapeutic benefits of CBD + terpenes? 39:00 Full spectrum vs broad-spectrum vs isolate 39:45 What is full-spectrum hemp? 41:00 How full spectrum hemp is extracted 42:30 Broad spectrum hemp CBD and who it may be best suited for 43:00 Isolate CBD and which consumers might benefit from it 44:00 Can THC show up on a drug test after taking a CBD Hemp supplement? 45:00 Story of a bus driver who tested positive for THC in a drug test 47:00 Can CBD metabolize into THC in the body? 48:00 What are flavonoids? 49:00 The number of flavonoids included in cannabis; and which ones are unique only to cannabis 49:30 What are polyphenols? 51:30 Hemp and cannabis plant material waste 54:30 Discussing spagyric extraction. 57:00 Cannabis and research; Do we need more research? 1:00:00 Cannabis is an organic compound 1:02:00 Making medical claims with cannabis products 1:04:00 Variance between analytical testing labs 1:06:00 The mindset of experimenting with cannabis vs pharmaceuticals 1:09:00 Cannabis are great illuminators 1:11:00 Synthetic CBD vs organically derived cannabinoids 1:12:00 The benefit of synthetic compounds for specific symptoms 1:13:00 Recent research about CBD and alcohol consumption 1:14:00 Combining cannabinoids vs whole-plant extract 1:16:00 Cannabis and hemp trends in 2020 (USDA, presidential election) 1:20:00 Emma's advice to the hemp industry for the next 12-18 months 1:25:00 Ethical selling and integrity of making and selling hemp, CBD and cannabis 1:27:00 Which products are missing in the hemp market? 1:30:00 How to guide a consumer starting with CBD hemp? 1:34:00 Emma's suggestions to the consumer about how to choose the right cannabis company 1:35:00 How to reach and contact Emma Chasen About Spectrum Labs At Spectrum Labs, we source local hemp and extract high-quality Full Spectrum Hemp extracts that even our families can use.
