Emergency supplies are now being airlifted into western North Carolina to help the victims of Helene. The storm brought excessive rainfall and devasting flash flooding to the region – cutting off some communities from the outside world. If you or someone you know is in need of help, here's how to apply. If you were impacted by Hurricane Helene, you may be eligible to receive disaster assistance from FEMA. This funding could help pay for essential items, temporary housing assistance, repairs to your home, and more. Whether you live in North Carolina or South Carolina, there are three ways to apply: you can visit www.disasterassistance.gov, call 1-800-621-3362 or use the FEMA App. 25 counties in North Carolina have received a major disaster declaration. The counties on your screen now are the eligible counties in North Carolina. The counties of Alexander, Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Buncombe, Burke, Caldwell, Catawba, Clay, Cleveland, Gaston, Haywood, Henderson, Jackson, Lincoln, Macon, Madison, McDowell, Mitchell, Polk, Rutherford, Transylvania, Watauga, Wilkes, and Yancey Counties and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians are included in the declaration. In South Carolina, you must live in one of these places - 13 Aiken, Anderson, Bamberg, Barnwell, Cherokee, Greenville, Greenwood, Lexington, Newberry, Oconee, Pickens, Saluda and Spartanburg counties can apply. In North Carolina, if you or someone you know needs food, water or other necessities you can call 211. This is also the same number you call to report a loved one missing. So if you're calling from out of state, you can dial 1-888-892-1162 to reach the hotline, which is being run by the United Way of North Carolina. Instead of the usual documentary podcast-style piece, this is a compilation of field recordings I did in Buncombe and Madison Counties just outside of Asheville, NC. Considered the mecca of the long held traditions in ballad singing and old-time mountain music, this area is also home to the “Minstrel of the Appalachians”, one of the most important yet lesser-known figures in folk and old time music, Bascom Lamar Lunsford - who was born on this day 142 years ago.  Over the last year, I was fortunate enough to visit North Carolina several times, to visit with Bascom's old home and talk with head of the non-profit that now owns it, perform at the annual Lunsford Festival at Mars Hill University, and witness the return of filmmaker David Hoffman, who first filmed Bascom in the 1964, and was coming back to visit the area for the first time in the nearly 60 years since. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for January 16, 2024 is: bunkum • BUNG-kum • noun Bunkum is an old-fashioned and informal word that refers to foolish or insincere talk or ideas. // As usual, the politician let out a load of bunkum during his speech. See the entry > Examples: "The German chemist's interests also stretched to human nutrition. He became convinced the juices that flowed out of cooked meat contained valuable nutritional compounds and encouraged cooks to sear the meat to seal in the juices. This turned out to be complete bunkum, but 150 years later his advice is still followed by Christmas dinner chefs across the land." — Mark Lorch, The Conversation, 20 Dec. 2021 Did you know? Some words in the English language have more colorful histories than others. In the case of bunkum, you could almost say it was an act of Congress that brought the word into being. Back in 1820, Felix Walker, who represented North Carolina's Buncombe County in the U.S. House of Representatives, was determined that his voice be heard on his constituents' behalf, even though the matter up for debate was irrelevant to Walker's district and he had little of substance to contribute. To the exasperation of his colleagues, Walker insisted on delivering a long and wearisome "speech for Buncombe." His persistent—if insignificant—harangue made buncombe (later respelled bunkum) a synonym for meaningless political claptrap and came later to refer to any kind of nonsense.

As the school buses get rolling across North Carolina, one elected official from Asheville is calling for teachers to strike if state lawmakers don't use a budget surplus to increase teacher pay. Buncombe County Commissioner Amanda Edwards wrote on Facebook: "The time is right for a statewide teacher strike." She predicted that K-12 employers would not be able to fire striking teachers because of the shortage of educators. When questioned by a reporter, she said she was merely encouraging a "walk out." A local representative for the NC Association of Educators union noted that it's a misdemeanor for teachers to go out on strike.  Meanwhile, there is a growing movement to restore "classical education." As the Washington Examiner reports:  "[G.K.] Chesterton articulates so well [this vision] of education being the soul of a society as it passes from one generation to the next," Tate said. Word of the Day

Bunkum is a noun that refers to nonsense. Our word of the day came to life after a mid-19th century speech that referred to a county in North Carolina called Buncombe. The speech was apparently made solely to please a politician's constituents, so the word stuck and was later changed to its current form. Example: We all got a feeling that the governor's speech was bunkum when he started trotting out dubious numbers. But things got even more questionable when he made up names to support those bogus facts.

Tom Godleski's newest play sounds far different than when he first brought it to Asheville's Magnetic Theatre . "He presented me with a very rough script. It was not written in a play format at all," recalled Artistic Director Katie Jones. "But he had a pretty decent story and then some beautiful songs." "They said 'We are going to do your play, but it's not ready,' and I was like 'what?'" Godleski said. "I thought it was okay. I was satisfied with it and I was happy with it." "I cannot tell you how many plays I read that have great dialog and nothing happens," Jones said. "But in this, it was like, something's happening. We just need to help him hone in on the characters' voices and the dialog." The finished play, as it will premiere on Magnetic's stage, is a bluegrass musical called "The Sparrow and the Whippoorwill," and it tells the entwined stories of a war veteran and a nurse who cares for him. It premieres Sept. 10 and runs through Sept. 25 at the Magnetic.

In the first of our four-part series, Viewing Rural Health, Education, and Business Through an Equity Lens, produced in collaboration with and supported by Grantmakers In Health, chats with an excellent group of practitioners and experts: William Buster, Senior Vice President for Impact at Dogwood Health Trust in Asheville, NC, oversees the foundation's grantmaking and program-related investments and ensures that the foundation lives up to its goals for diversity, equity and inclusion; Nathan Ramsey, Executive Director of Land of Sky Regional Council and Director of the Mountain Area Workforce Development Board serving Buncombe, Henderson, Madison, and Transylvania Counties; and Tressie White, Program Director at the Montana Healthcare Foundation. Rural and urban families struggling with poverty face the same challenges, from educational opportunities to broadband access, notes Buster. Indeed, with our current labor shortage, it's important that we ensure that all residents live up to their full potential, Ramsey notes, whether in urban or rural communities. There are clear-cut health disparities in Montana, White says, including that, on average, those in trial communities have a lifespan 20 years shorter than non-native Americans. Her organization helps tribal communities in a variety of areas, including securing grants, providing technical assistance, and developing school-based services. The guests discuss lessons learned from the pandemic and what communities can take advantage of post-pandemic, including access to housing and health care, increased broadband equity, and infrastructure and sustainable enhancements. This episode and the entire series, is sponsored by Grantmakers In Health.

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for September 9, 2020 is: bunkum • BUNG-kum • noun : insincere or foolish talk : nonsense Examples: I hesitated to voice my opinions, fearful that my companions would deride my views as bunkum. "Out on social media, people are reposting and retweeting and emailing myths, hurling them across the internet with the kind of speed attainable only by pure bunkum." — Heather Yakin, The Times Herald-Record, 17 Mar. 2020 Did you know? Some words in the English language have more colorful histories than others, but in the case of bunkum, you could almost say it was an act of Congress that brought the word into being. Back in 1820 Felix Walker, who represented Buncombe County, North Carolina, in the U.S. House of Representatives, was determined that his voice be heard on his constituents' behalf, even though the matter up for debate was irrelevant to Walker's district and he had little to contribute. To the exasperation of his colleagues, Walker insisted on delivering a long and wearisome "speech for Buncombe." His persistent—if insignificant—harangue made buncombe (later respelled bunkum) a synonym for meaningless political claptrap and later for any kind of nonsense.

Coach Graves began his head coaching career as the Head Football Coach at SFA, where he coached the Lumberjacks all the way to the National Championship Game in 1989. With a close loss in the championship game, and impatience during a time of building the program back up, SFA decided to go in a new direction. Coach Graves did the same and took the Head Football Coaching job for the San Augustine Wolves and led the team to a 2003 UIL State Title against the Tuscola- Jim Ned Indians and quarterback Colt McCoy. Four days later, he was fired. No worries though, they rehired him later on down the road, and Coach Graves has a tremendous outlook on life and didn't let things get to him, as his mission of building kids into quality people, always took the forefront. School choice takes many different forms in North Carolina. In recent years, state legislators have established Opportunity Scholarship vouchers for students from low-wealth families, a separate grant program for students with special education needs, and education savings accounts. Terry Stoops, John Locke Foundation vice president for research and director of education studies, analyzes each of these programs. Cyberspace might represent the most important battlefield in future conflicts between the United States and its adversaries. During a recent visit to North Carolina, Washington Post staff writer Shane Harris explained how President Trump has approached cyberwarfare differently from his predecessors. Harris analyzes the potential impact of the policy shift. For the first time in his nine years as leader of the N.C. Senate, Phil Berger will not have a Republican supermajority to override a governor’s veto. During the opening day of the new legislative session, Berger explained how the change could affect relations between Senate Republicans and Democrats. Speaking of vetoes, lawmakers voted to override Cooper’s veto of a bill re-establishing separate state elections and ethics oversight boards. During the vote, lawmakers debated the potential impact on investigations of alleged campaign finance violations. Buncombe County voters approved a local sales tax hike in 2011 to address repairs and renovations for their local community college. A recent scandal involving the ousted county manager revealed that the money had been used instead to balance Buncombe’s budget. Joseph Coletti, John Locke Foundation senior fellow, discusses the problem and potential solutions for Buncombe taxpayers.

The first is with Mary Ratcliff, the editor of 27 years of the San Francisco Bay View National Black Newspaper, with a print distribution of 20,000 copies around the U.S., including thousands behind bars. For the hour, Mary talks about the history of the paper, it's relationship with prisoners and prison struggles and the difficulties faced by the poor and populations of color in white supremacist capitalism in the so-called U.S. Then I spoke with a volunteer at the Steady Collective, a group that self-describes as “ dedicated to promoting the wellness of people who use drugs through empowerment and respectful collaboration. Our goal is to improve overall community health by reducing the rate of drug overdose and the spread of infectious disease with education, advocacy, and direct services.“ Their ability to operate a harm reduction program around needle exchange and narcan distribution to stop overdoses in the midst of the #opiodCrisis in Appalachia is being threatened by the city of Asheville. Here's the website for 12 Baskets, the food distribution program out of Kairos West. Announcements A12 in D.C., Cville & 8/18 in Boston Last weekend witnessed far right, nazi-affiliated, sexist, homophobe rallies in Portland and Berkeley, which I'm sure folks are aware of. Patriot Prayer and Proud Boy goons schlepped their way out from under rocks in their goofy-ass larping costumes to spit their deranged and hateful screeds and threaten and attack counter-demonstrators where they could. And the police helped by holding back and assaulting the anti-racists at both events with pepper spray, batons, tear gas and rubber bullets, as well as legal charges. Big ups to the brave folks who came out to stem the tide of hate on the West coast, and also a big a thanks to the comrades who came out in Providence, R.I. where they were able to shut that crap down real fast. This weekend the year anniversary of the August 11th Torch Rally and August 12th Unite The Right Rally in Charlottesville approaches. On Sunday, August 12th in Cville there's a day of events of remembrance and mourning starting at 9am in Washington Park. The police presence has been shown to be huge in the runup to this weekend with Martial Law and States of Emergency declared by local and state officials, leave for police being suspended, and swaths of the city shut down and blockaded. Follow #AllOutCville for updates. In Washington, D.C., haters are trying to put on a second UTR to draw their morons in swastika and Pinochet shirts and confederate bafoons into the streets. Information about what's happening and how to congregate against it can be found at https://shutitdowndc.org/ . And check out the ItsGoingDown's “This Is America #24” for voices from the ground in DC & Cville. On August 15th in Boston there is planned a Town Hall Meeting at the Arlington St Church in preparation for the counter-demonstration on August 18th at the MA State House to shut down the far-right hate front group, “Resist Marxism”. Worker's Assembly Asheville On Monday, August 20th at 6pm and every 3rd Monday of the month, the Asheville IWW is hosting a service industry workers assembly at Kairos West. If you work in food serice, retail, hospitality, breweries, or other service industries and don't have the right to hire or fire, come by and join the discussion on issues facing your ilk including wages and hours, but also issues such as racism and gendered violence that workers face in and outside of their workplaces. The discussions are aimed at creating direct action solutions and creating class solidarity. To hear about their first Assembly, check out our interview on the topic. Joseph Pearson is an Asheville oil painter on a mission.  He paints pieces that convey his values and send a message to the viewer about societal issues.  He expressed during this interview that if he created work that didn't make a statement, he would feel that he was "talking to hear myself talking." I met Joseph during the Fall 2016 River Arts District Studio Stroll, where he works out of his studio at Pink Dog Creative.  I was quite taken with his piece "The Talk" and asked Joseph to tell me about it. He spoke strongly about the responsibility of adults to provide guidance for the next generation.  And he showed me other pieces that reflect the same message. I was very impressed with Joseph's explanation and mission and invited him to be on the show, telling him I would be in touch in the Spring.  I didn't really need to do anymore interviews until then.  However, the very same day I met Joseph, I also happened to meet a young man at a local health food store who was absolutely despondent over the state of our society.  He was despondent and inconsolable... I could not shake the connection of meeting both of these men on the same day, so I invited Joseph to be interviewed sooner than later, and he graciously agreed. To connect with Joseph and see more of his work: SCROLL below! Visit his website at http://www.josephart.net Follow his public posts on his Facebook page Joseph is available for commissioned portraits, both human and pet Highlights of this interview include: Joseph's talking about the meaning behind several of his paintings Examples of how Joseph has used his art and his life to do good for children in need How Joseph compares his art to medicine Joseph's history of receiving numerous artist grants (including full scholarship 4 out of 5 years at the Art Students League of NY) Joseph's tips for other artists who may be interested in seeking grants themselves More examples of Joseph's work (discussed in the interview): Because Joseph has been recently awarded a grant, he asked me to mention that his work is supported by the North Carolina Arts Council, a division of the Department of Cultural Resources, a state agency, with funding from local arts councils in Buncombe, Madison, Mitchell, and Yancey Counties, and with support from Avery County. This week we spoke with Laura LaVoie about the tiny house movement. Owning one herself, she was able to give us a rundown on exactly what a tiny house is; the many of the advantages and disadvantages of owning one, and the unique struggle it is to downsize from a "normal" size household to life in 120 square feet. Laura also talks with us about why some cities seem to be much more opposed to tiny houses than Asheville; how Asheville might learn from tiny house friendly cities; and what the future may hold for tiny house hopefuls in both Asheville as well as all of Buncombe county. While there is no concrete definition of a 'tiny' home, a house built to be less than 500 square feet is considered to be a tiny house. Many tiny homes are often built on trailers so that they can easily be transported. Each tiny home is built exactly like a traditional stick built home, just on a much smaller scale. Rich is a member of the City of Asheville Greenway Committee; the Buncombe County Triad; WNC Group Homes for Autistic Persons; 1-26 ConnectUs Project; and the Coalition of Asheville Neighborhoods just to name a few. In 2015 Rich ran for a seat on City Council, landing in 4th place during the election. A gentle, laid back individual Rich is on top of current Asheville news and has a good idea of what 2016 will look like for our fair city and townsfolk.  What about the 1-26 connector project? Will we see hundreds of home destroyed this year? Is New Belgium for sale? How will that impact the River Arts District where they are currently building a $175 million brewing facility? Politically what is in store for Asheville, as new seats and positions within the local government become available? We talk with Rich about all of these issues, and more, and discuss exactly what locals will see happen this year.

A stroll through the local farmers market is like walking through a cornucopia of abundance. Sweet potatoes are piled high near yellow onions and fresh greens. But before these ingredients are ready for the soup pot, a transaction must be made. There are often financial barriers that separate people from fresh, healthy food. Several farmers markets in the region now accept SNAP tokens or vouchers. Once known as food stamps, SNAP is a nationwide effort to help low-income people access healthy food. In some North Carolina mountain communities, a USDA pilot project will test innovative ways to better engage all communities with the abundance of fresh local produce available at the markets. A new USDA grant will help the Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project connect people in Buncombe, Haywood, and Henderson counties with healthy food. ASAP will foster relationships with local agencies and nonprofits that already help low-income people live healthy lives. Through this new grant, faith-based groups and social service agencies will help open the pathways to explain how SNAP works at farmers markets and to encourage the people they serve to make going to the market part of their eating routine. It’s all about accessibility. When our entire community can access healthy food, all of our lives are improved.
