In this week's episode, I'm talking about a single, magic word that has the power to reduce your stress and give you more time to do the things that matter to you. What is this "Magic Word" ? "No" People seem to have no issue asking for our time, our attention, our money, etc. But for some reason, we often feel bad about saying no. It makes us feel like we're not doing our part, or being negative, or a bad person. "No" is just a response. It's neither good nor bad, but learning to use it can have a huge impact on your life. Key Insights Saying "no" doesn't mean you're a negative person with a negative attitude...it's just a response No need to make up excuses. This is a complete sentence: "No." Using the word "because" in your response can lead to less pushback Saying No to things you don't want to do gives you more time to say yes to the things you do want to do Video And Transcript https://www.rayedwards.com/645 Links The Copywriting Academy Live: Kick off 2024 with radical change and massive progress. My guest this week is author and expert in business and finance, Chris Lautenslager. We talk about Chris' book The Prosperity Loop and explore his views on purpose-driven business and capitalism. We get into the importance of building relationships, adapting to change, and creating shared prosperity in business. Chris believes that businesses should focus on enhancing the value of the people they work with, including customers, vendors, and the community. This people-oriented approach, he suggests, is key to thriving in today's changing world. We also step through Chris' wealth creation model for socially conscious leaders that aims to find a balance between people and profits. Today I have one statement that I want to remind you of, it could be the most important tool in your tool bag, the one thing you should always remind yourself of, and perhaps the single most important concept for your success... You Are The Value Remember that. Always funnel the value through you. Value is not the products you sell. Value is not the products you install. You are the value. What is the value? Is it Hunter versus Rain Bird? No People buy the value that you offer, not the products that you sell. Be curious and discover what this value needs to be.
This week I talk to Don Dixon in the first of a two parter. Don is an astrophysics PhD candidate attending Vanderbilt University. He is also a member of the Fisk-Vanderbilt Bridge program and alumnus of the Cal-Bridge program in California. His research interests are primarily in stellar evolution, particularly on interacting binaries and stellar rotation. Outside of working on his own research Don spends time mentoring and addressing issues of diversity and racial injustice. He currently leads the BLack Academic Support and Advisory gRoup (BLASAR), which is a Black networking group initiated from Cal-Bridge and has worked as a volunteer programmer to develop a web scraping pipeline for the Code for Nashville organization. I recognize that her majesty Queen Liliʻuokalani yielded the Hawaiian Kingdom and these territories under duress and protest to the United States to avoid the bloodshed of her people. I further recognize that generations of indigenous Hawaiians and their knowledge systems shaped Hawaiʻi in a sustainable way that allows me to enjoy her gifts today. This episode was funded by the Curb Center in Nashville and we recognize that this land belonged to the Indigenous People before it came to be known as the state of Tennessee, or as the United States of America. We recognize that that Indigenous Peoples were the first residents of what we now know as the State of Tennessee and that Nashville is built upon the homelands and villages of the Indigenous Peoples of this region including the Shawnee, Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, and Yuchi tribal nations. Our ability to live and work in this state is the result of direct coercion, forced dispossession, and deliberate colonization. To ignore that is to perpetuate injustice to populations of people that continue to seek redistribution of land that was once theirs. We provide this land acknowledgement in recognition and respect of the indigenous people to whom this land truly belongs. We recognize that acknowledgment by itself is a small gesture, and that it becomes meaningful when coupled with authentic relationship and informed action. I am always trying to learn and improve on my unconscious bias. Any suggestions for improvement will be gratefully received at astronomerand@gmail.com.
THIS MEME IS A HARMFUL LIETHE THESIS: The Sexual Left is the tip of The Party's spear in the theft of the very meanings of the many kinds of love and the corresponding feelings and actions. If we ever hope to truly, intimately know The Lord we must rescue the reality of godly love in all its many aspects and expressions. THE SCRIPTURE & SCRIPTURAL RESOURCES: 1 Corinthians 13:4-74 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. What Is Love? Jesus is the reason we even know what love is. In laying down His life for us, He taught us everything we need to know about true love. Love is self-sacrificing, generous, unending, not a temporary feeling or attraction. Because of God's love for the world, we know love is also undeserving and often unreciprocated.THE NEWS & COMMENT:Can anyone find love, godly or otherwise, in the PhD Thesis of the young man who conspired with the criminals who run the FBI to illegally censor Americans? The episode is kind of all over the pace. It is about the Taíno people, but I went off course as always. There's talk about politics and employment as well as inflation. I also speak on Hip Hop for a brief moment. If you're familiar with history of Christopher Columbus you know the Taíno people, maybe not by name but you know how things went for them. "I've had to learn how to get comfortable with my own "No" and I think this is why the Power of No was one of my favorite chapters in the book Balance. Far too many relationships work only because people say yes most of the time. Trying to avoid conflict by withholding a warranted no doesn't insure peace but increases friction within.

In this episode, I interview Bharat Kanodia, the Founder and Chief Appraiser at Veristrat based in San Francisco, USA, helping clients with raising capital, estate planning, and mergers & acquisitions. Bharat has been in valuation since 2000 and has valued assets in real estate, industrial, personal property, and financial assets. With his extensive experience in valuation, he started his own valuation company in 2010. It was self-funded and was a tough start. He started with zero people and by 2013, he got 35 employees. Unfortunately, during the first six months of the pandemic, he had to let go of some of his employees and a few months later got some of them back to the company with a total of 25 FTEs now. Bharat says that two things make the business very sellable: “One, you need a consistent cash flow, you set up a business model, which makes your customers or your clients pay you on a monthly or a quarterly basis. And two, you need to set up systems and processes so that you can service those clients and customers on autopilot.” This Cast Covers: The company provides services to people who want to know the worth of something such as buying a business or selling a business. A valuation firm helps clients to raise their capital and to know the worth of an estate they will be inheriting so they can pay appropriate taxes on them. Had a rough time during the first six months of the pandemic which resulted in letting go of some of the employees. Why every small business owner should have a marketing strategy that works for their current clients, increasing the chance for faster growth. Overcoming challenges in the business by doing something you don't normally do. Navigating the ups and downs that come with an entrepreneurial journey. The importance of trying something new just to save the business and the people behind it from crushing. Dealing with the stress of the changes such as when one of the biggest clients suddenly quit. The importance for every small business owner to learn how good habits influence the growth of a business and that everyone in the team must cultivate good habits. Two things that make the business very sellable: One, you need consistent cash flow, you set up a business model and two, you need to set up systems and processes so that you can service those clients on autopilot. Derek Gaunt is a lecturer, trainer, author of "Ego, Authority, Failure and member of the Balck Swan Group. With over 20 years of experience in hostage negotiations, Derek is versed in de-escalating emotions and returning people to a normal functioning level for better decision-making and behavioural change. "Ego, Authority, Failure: Using Emotional Intelligence Like a Hostage Negotiator to Succeed as a Leader" is filled with actionable tips that can help front-line managers, middle managers, and C-suite executives grow as leaders to inspire their teams and achieve their business goals. Just like hostage negotiators use truly universal techniques, the skills taught in this book can apply to nearly every business situation. During this conversation, Derek walked me through the hostage negotiator's tactics and tools and showed me how to apply them to feedback conversations scenarios and difficult conversations with employees. SHOW NOTES: Tactical Empathy Is a solution to any relationship! You will learn various tools that combined, will help you establish trust and defuse emotionally charged conversation. "We call it tactical empathy because it's deliberate and it is strategic. The best purveyors of tactical empathy are hostage negotiators and sociopaths. We both use it because we know it's effective." Accusation Audit To create psychological safety, hostage negotiators starting with accusations early on. You will hear how Derek starts performance review with accusation audit and explains why it is so effective. "There is no clearer way for you to demonstrate that you are trying to see it from their perspective than for you to start verbalising things that they haven't even said yet". "No" Oriented Question Another counterintuitive at first, and highly effective tactic. If you'd like people to say yes to your request, formulate a question that makes them say "NO" "People are "YES" addicted "YES" is becoming a dirty word. YES means obligation, YES means commitment, Yes means I HAVE NO ROOM. You are giving them a choice when you change to NO ORIENTED question. They feel like they have an option." Quick 2 plus 1 It's a combination of 3 simple tools that the Black Swan Group is coaching their students that will give you an edge in every negotiation or difficult conversation. Derek coached me on how to use Labelling, Mirroring and Dynamic Pause. Two hacks on how to stay cool ahead of the difficult conversation I asked Derek how did he keep his ego and authority at bay when negotiating with criminals? The multi talented and quite frankly hilarious, Gail Porter, joins Dr Linda for a chat about her life, love and all that's in between. Tracing everything from the unexpected catalyst that ignited her passion for broadcasting at a young age, the Top of the Pops years, that infamous Houses of Parliament stunt through to her astounding resilience through well documented battles with mental health and Alopecia, all the way to the sheer joy of being a mum to her teenage daughter. Huge thanks to Gail for being so generous with her time and her words with us. Keep up to date with what Gail is up to on Twitter @gailporter and Instagram @iamgailporter Merry Christmas x
