From there, the conversation pivots to political hot topics including the fallout from Texas Democrats fleeing the state, speculation on a grand jury probe into Obama-era officials over Trump-Russia conspiracies, and the deep entanglement between government and media. The hour wraps with an in-depth discussion with Mark Walters about a lawsuit challenging the 1934 National Firearms Act, the future of gun rights, and the complexities surrounding the ATF.

This Day in Legal History: Reagan Fires Air Traffic ControllersOn August 5, 1981, President Ronald Reagan followed through on a warning to striking air traffic controllers by initiating the dismissal of over 11,000 of them. The controllers, members of the Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization (PATCO), had walked off the job on August 3, demanding better wages, shorter hours, and improved working conditions. Reagan responded firmly, citing the fact that federal employees had taken an oath not to strike against the government. In a speech delivered the same day the strike began, he gave them 48 hours to return to work or face termination. When the deadline passed without compliance, the administration acted swiftly, beginning the process of mass firings. The move marked a defining moment in Reagan's presidency and had lasting effects on labor relations in the public sector. It also effectively broke PATCO as a union, with the government decertifying it shortly afterward. The decision underscored Reagan's commitment to law and order as well as his hardline stance against labor disruptions that affected national infrastructure. It sent a powerful signal to other unions and shifted the political climate around collective bargaining. The Federal Aviation Administration eventually rebuilt the workforce, but full staffing and operations took years to stabilize.A federal judge in San Diego has ruled that Duane Morris LLP must face most of the claims in a proposed class action accusing the firm of misclassifying certain employees as "partners" to shift tax and benefit costs onto them while denying them a share of the firm's profits. The case was brought by Meagan Garland, a former employment law partner at the firm, who alleges that Duane Morris used the "non-equity partner" designation to avoid paying payroll taxes and employee benefits like health and disability insurance.Judge Cathy Ann Bencivengo rejected Duane Morris' motion to dismiss the majority of Garland's claims, though she allowed two dismissed claims to be amended. Garland also claims the firm engaged in discriminatory pay practices, alleging that women and minorities were paid less than white male colleagues. Duane Morris, founded in Philadelphia, denies any wrongdoing and contends that Garland was properly treated as a partner under the law. The lawsuit spotlights the broader issue of how law firms use partnership titles that may not reflect actual ownership or control.US law firm Duane Morris must face lawsuit over alleged partner pay scheme | ReutersThe U.S. Department of Justice, under Attorney General Pam Bondi, is reportedly convening a grand jury to investigate claims that officials from former President Barack Obama's administration fabricated intelligence about Russian interference in the 2016 election. The investigation stems from assertions by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, who has alleged the intelligence community was politically weaponized. The DOJ recently formed a strike force to assess those claims, though it has not commented on the reported grand jury.President Donald Trump has amplified Gabbard's accusations, calling them vindication and reiterating his unsubstantiated claim that Obama committed treason by trying to link him to Russia. Gabbard, who declassified certain documents, claimed they reveal a “treasonous conspiracy” to sabotage Trump's campaign. Democrats have dismissed the allegations as false and politically driven. The 2017 U.S. intelligence assessment concluded that Russia interfered in the 2016 election to harm Hillary Clinton and help Trump, primarily through cyber operations and disinformation. However, it found no conclusive evidence that the efforts changed the outcome. Russia has consistently denied any involvement.US DOJ to open grand jury to investigate Obama officials, source says | ReutersA federal judge has dismissed a defamation lawsuit brought by Devin Nunes—former congressman and current CEO of Trump Media—against NBCUniversal over statements made by Rachel Maddow on her MSNBC show. The case centered on Maddow's 2021 claim that Nunes failed to turn over a package he received from Ukrainian legislator Andrii Derkach, who was sanctioned by the U.S. as a Russian agent. Nunes argued that Maddow knowingly misrepresented the situation, since the package had, in fact, been given to the FBI.U.S. District Judge Kevin Castel ruled that Nunes failed to show Maddow acted with "actual malice," a legal requirement for defamation claims brought by public figures. Castel said there was no evidence Maddow knew her statement was false or recklessly disregarded the truth. He also found no indication that her political bias drove her to fabricate the claim. Maddow and her team had relied on other sources, and weren't even named as defendants in the suit—NBCUniversal was.The judge noted that Nunes couldn't prove Maddow was aware of a Politico article stating the FBI had the package. Derkach, the sender of the package, was later charged in an unrelated money laundering case and remains at large. The lawsuit's dismissal underscores the high bar public figures face when attempting to prove defamation.Trump Media CEO Nunes loses defamation lawsuit over Rachel Maddow show | ReutersA federal judge in Mississippi, Henry Wingate, has declined to explain a prior ruling that was riddled with serious factual and procedural errors in a high-profile civil rights case. The original July 20 decision, which temporarily blocked Mississippi's ban on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs in public schools and universities, mistakenly named incorrect parties, included inaccurate facts, and cited material that may not exist. Wingate replaced the flawed ruling with a corrected version but refused the state's request for clarification or to preserve the original decision in the public record. In a brief order, Wingate acknowledged the mistakes as “clerical errors” and asserted that judges have the authority to correct such issues without further explanation. The state's attorneys haven't publicly suggested a cause for the mistakes, which surfaced the same week a judge in New Jersey retracted a separate opinion after it was found to contain fake citations likely generated by artificial intelligence. That incident reportedly involved a temporary assistant using AI without adequate oversight. The Mississippi ruling's errors have raised broader concerns about accuracy and accountability in the judiciary, especially amid increasing scrutiny over AI use in legal writing. Legal ethics experts, including Indiana University professor Charles Geyh, noted the scale of the errors in both cases as unusually severe for federal courts.US judge says he won't explain error-ridden ruling in Mississippi civil rights case | ReutersMy column for Bloomberg this week argues that the IRS needs to modernize its understanding of what qualifies as a charitable purpose, especially in the context of open-source software. I focus on the agency's recent decision to deny 501(c)(3) status to an open-source organization, even though its software was free, publicly licensed, and designed for use by nonprofits, schools, and public entities. The problem, I suggest, is that the IRS still relies on outdated frameworks that fail to see intangible digital goods—like code—as valid public benefits, even when they clearly serve civic or educational ends.I draw comparisons to other nonphysical outputs the IRS has deemed charitable, such as legal covenants used in historic preservation or freely distributed textbooks. If those are eligible, why not code? The IRS's reasoning—that open accessibility negates exclusivity of charitable purpose—misunderstands how open-source licensing already limits private benefit. Licenses like the GNU GPL are specifically structured to ensure that the software remains free and publicly useful, even when reused or modified.I also point out that open-source tools power major government systems, including those of the IRS itself. Recognizing code as a charitable output wouldn't require creating new law—just applying existing standards more consistently. If architectural plans or legal documents can qualify, so should code that educates, streamlines public services, or saves nonprofits from buying costly proprietary tools.Open-Source Coders Who Benefit the Public Should Be Tax-Exempt This is a public episode. The show opens with new numbers that completely destroys the ones from yesterday. No matter how hard the bought-and-paid-for Legacy/mainstream media tries, their predictions of economic doom and gloom are not coming true. DNI Gabbard calls out a reporter at the Washington Post for using a burner phone and trying to get members of the ODNI to leak classified information to her. The paper is already being scrutinized for printing such material. A CIA report just dropped telling us what this audience already knew – the Obama-era intel and leadership rushed a narrative when pushing the Trump-Russia collusion hoax. The Secretary of State's Office is continuing to stand by their reforms to track aid funds to ensure they get to where they are supposed to go. They also remind the press that Hamas is to blame for all of the lack of ceasefires, let alone the Oct 7, 2023 attack. Dollar Store 44 goes on a 7+ hour filibuster to try to stop the BBB from getting a new vote in the House. Funny, not that long ago he accused those who did such a thing as clinging to the vestiges of the Jim Crow days. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent says of Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), “I would not ask an arsonist advice about how to put out a fire.” Then, I spend some time on two inter-related subjects. I am trying to understand how a sub-set of our nation can be convinced to believe in Marxist/socialist ideas. I think it's because we have all forgotten to take stock of the wealth we have thanks to Capitalism. We all need to learn how to explain it and defend it. This leads to my closing about the US Constitution and how the signing of the Declaration of Independence was the start of a radical transformation on how people could and should be governed. With our 249th birthday on July 4, I think it made sense to give just a little reminder about what our Founding Fathers achieved and why we must all fight to keep this glorious Republic intact. A special salute to the ballers who've been with us since the Obama Era, through thick and thin, from Kreis to Cup -- this one's for you. But that's about as triumphant as we're getting this time around, because NYCFC is back to their old tricks and we don't mean that in a good way. Jake & Trey break down our few-shots-on-goal 90 against Charlotte FC and break down what's changed and what hasn't from our abortive 2023 campaign. Plus: Gabe Segal nabs a highlight reel moment for Houston. Then: a pessimistic precap of St. Louis. Wait 20 minutes before going into the silk bath -- you've got Blue Balls.

The Federal Communications Commission is bringing back a policy of deeper government regulation over the internet with so-called net neutrality. Supporters of the system defend it, claiming it prevents internet providers from providing better services to some, and worse to others. Many who don't support net neutrality claim that it stifles innovation. But there are deeper problems with net neutrality that are often left unaddressed—things like so-called “digital equity” and policies that would allow the federal government to have a say even over the terms of services for websites. In this episode of Crossroads, we'll discuss this topic and others, and answer questions from the audience.   Views expressed in this video are opinions of the host and guests, and do not necessarily reflect the views of The Epoch Times.   ⭕️

First off—big news in Money 4 Nothing-land. We've just OFFICIALLY joined forces with the amazing Penny Fractions newsletter to create a new and almighty Voltron (Sailors Moon?) of critical coverage on the music industry. We'll be rolling out exciting new projects over the next few months, so please stay tuned! And now, on with the show…    When news broke that a wave of Scott “Scooter" Braun's clients were leaving him—including mega-names like Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber—it seemed like it might be the beginning of the end for the most successful music manager of the 2010s. But…who is Scooter exactly? And why should anyone care?   While most know Braun for his era-defining beef with Taylor Swift, we decided to go a bit deeper, exploring his remarkable ascent amid the shell-shocked chaos of the music biz during the early Obama Era. As we dug in, we realized that Scooter's success actually provided a fascinating vantage-point through which to understand the distinctive era that ran from early Youtube to the launch of Tik Tok—a moment of disruption, change, and platform power that we might just be coming out of. Come for the Asher Roth (yeah, THAT Asher Roth). Stay for the T-Swift conspiracies.    Subscribe to our newsletter! Follow us on Twitter! Subscribe to Penny Fractions!

A recent National Labor Relations Board (NLRB or the Board) decision reverts to an Obama-era standard used to determine a worker's status as an employee or an independent contractor under the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA or the Act). This is important, as employees have rights under the NLRA, while independent contractors do not.In this episode, Jill and Alex discuss the decision, events that led up to it, and how it may affect employers.

President Joe Biden's Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas recently appointed the "spies who lied" about the Hunter Biden laptop scandal to a new U.S. intelligence panel. Former CIA Director John Brennan, former CIA Senior Operations Officer Paul Kolbe, and former National Intelligence Director James Clapper will headline the "Homeland Intelligence Experts Group." But are these men qualified to serve after they were part of the 51 intelligence officials who signed the October 2020 letter that refuted the New York Post's exposé on Hunter Biden? On today's show, the Sekulow team discusses the potential danger to national security created by DHS Secretary Mayorkas, Vice President Kamala Harris' claims about "climate anxiety," the latest news in the "disqualification" plot against former President Donald Trump, and much more.

Five years ago, Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams finally lost the (musical) lawsuit of the century. Their song, “Blurred Lines,” had been an inescapable summertime hit, a wedding-DJ-standby, and the center of a very Obama-Era debate over whether it was creepy to have a song called “Blurred Lines” in the first place (it was.) Now, it was also found to have violated IP owned by Marvin Gaye's estate, specifically the classic song “Got To Give It Up”—a brilliant track that VIBED a lot like “Blurred Lines” without sharing much, if any, direct musical DNA. It was a bombshell. In the years since, the music industry has changed. Songwriters became more cautious, backroom deals were struck, catalogs got bought, and everyone accused Ed Sheeran of stealing their songs.  But why was the lawsuit actually decided in favor of Gaye? And what does that tell us about the legal structures that shape modern music? To get a better sense, Saxon and Sam dig into the details of the case, unpacking the epically unmoored nature of modern copyright, the invisible impact of sampling, the music biz negotiations that followed the ruling, and the AI possibilities hurtling at us all. Come to hear us try and remember what 2013 sounded like. Stay for some beautiful—and we mean beautiful—depositions.

The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB or the Board) recently issued a decision in American Steel Construction, Inc., in which a 3-2 Board majority threw out the Trump-era standard used to determine whether a microunit (i.e., a small, discrete subset of employees at a larger worksite) is appropriate and reinstated the Obama-era standard which held that petitioned-for units would be found appropriate unless there was an “overwhelming” community of interest between the petitioned-for unit and excluded employees. On this episode of the NTEB Prophecy News Podcast, we have arrived here on Day 819 of 15 Days To Flatten the Curve, and Build Back Better is doing exactly what Klaus Schwab promised that it and the Great Reset would do, and that is the decimation of the American economy. Here in Florida, I tweet about high gas prices on a Monday and by Wednesday, MOnday's tweet has suddenly become the "good old days". Never mind that Joe Biden's very first Executive Order was to close the Keystone XL gas and oil pipeline. Here in Saint Augustine, the oldest city in America, rent prices have gone up more in the last 6 months than in the last 16 years, and that same story is being played out across our nation. How can America survive that? She can't, and know you know what Build Back Better and the Great Reset - one in the same thing - are all about. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell is facing an increasingly grim calculus after yet another hot inflation reading last week: He probably has to push the economy into recession in order to regain control of prices. “I've become more pessimistic about the opportunity of stabilizing inflation at an acceptable level without a recession,” said JPMorgan Chase & Co. chief economist Bruce Kasman. Joe Biden promised you Build Back Better, and here it is.
