The conflict was one of the deadliest in recent world history and drew international attention for a preponderance of alleged war crimes, human rights abuses, and ethnic cleansing in Tigray. The war formally ended in November 2022; Tigray was left in ruins, and its capital was turned over to the federal government. Due to the conflict, 5.1 million Ethiopians became internally displaced in 2021 alone, a record for the most people internally displaced in any country in any single year at the time. Thousands also fled to Sudan and other countries in the region. By the time the Pretoria peace agreement took effect, the Tigray War and its associated humanitarian disaster had killed approximately 600,000 people. In late 2022, humanitarian groups were permitted to meaningfully operate in Tigray for the first time since November 2020. source African Union(11:37 or p.4 in the transcript)African Union (AU), intergovernmental organization, was established in 2002, to promote unity and solidarity of African states, to spur economic development, and to promote international cooperation. The African Union (AU) replaced the Organization of African Unity (OAU). The AU's headquarters are in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The OAU was established on May 25, 1963, and its activities included diplomacy (especially in support of African liberation movements), mediation of boundary conflicts and regional and civil wars, and research in economics and communications. The OAU maintained the “Africa group” at the United Nations (UN) through which many of its efforts at international coordination were channeled. The OAU was instrumental in bringing about the joint cooperation of African states in the work of the Group of 77, which acts as a caucus of developing nations within the UN Conference on Trade and Development. In 2000, in a move spearheaded by Libyan leader Colonel Muammar al-Qaddafi, it was proposed that the OAU be replaced by a new body, the African Union. The African Union was to be more economic in nature, similar to the European Union, and would contain a central bank, a court of justice, and an all-Africa parliament. A Constitutive Act, which provided for the establishment of the African Union, was ratified by two-thirds of the OAU's members and came into force on May 26, 2001. After a transition period, the African Union replaced the OAU in July 2002. In 2004 the AU's Pan-African Parliament was inaugurated, and the organization agreed to create a peacekeeping force, the African Standby Force, of about 15,000 soldiers. source

More than 2.7 million people have been forced to flee their homes and at least 13.4 million are in dire need of humanitarian assistance. People began fleeing the central Sahel region in 2011 after an outbreak of violence in Northern Mali. Poverty, unemployment, and the presence of armed groups in rural areas of Northern Mali all contributed to an increase in forced displacement. Armed groups have rapidly expanded, spreading violence to central parts of the country and to neighboring countries, such as Burkina Faso and Niger. As a result of the conflict, millions of families have been displaced across the region, including 650,000 people uprooted in 2019 alone. Approximately 1.8 million people have been internally displaced. In Burkina Faso, at least 1 million people – approximately 5 percent of the country's population- have fled violence inside the country in the past year, many seeking refuge in areas that are also affected by violence and poverty. Armed conflict, economic insecurity, and the adverse effects of climate change are some of the biggest challenges affecting the region. Indiscriminate attacks against civilians and public infrastructure – including schools and health facilities – have threatened the lives of millions of people and their livelihoods. The conflict has claimed more than 6,500 lives in the last year and threatens to leave at least 7.4 million people suffering from acute malnutrition. source

As the African Union - AU - turned 20  this year, the debate about its effectiveness is back on the table once again. Established here in South Africa, in Durban, KwaZulu Natal, in 2002 with 53 African nations as members, the AU became the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which had existed since 1963. While the OAU concentrated its efforts primarily on decolonization and the establishment of diplomatic relations between members, the AU was founded to advance the continent's economic development and entrench lasting peace. After 20 years has the African Union achieved these lofty goals? Minister in the Presidency Mondli Gungubele said on Wednesday that Africa Day is an opportunity to celebrate the socioeconomic achievements on the continent. Africa Day is commemorated every year to mark the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) on May 25, 1963. The OAU was the predecessor of the the African Union (AU). This year's theme is ‘Strengthening Resilience in Nutrition and Food Security on the African Continent'. Gungubele said South Africa stood with its counterparts on the continent in addressing pertinent challenges such as nutrition. Gungubele said the challenge of malnutrition was concerning as it had significant consequences for African children, and it led to decreased social and economic development of nations. The Covid-19 pandemic has exposed the economic vulnerability of countries, including their health and food systems. “As part of the long-term vision set out in Agenda 2063, we must strive to fully realise the common aspiration of well-nourished citizens, with a particular emphasis on women and children,” said Gungubele. He acknowledged while more needed to be done on the continent, the AU had made important progress in two decades and had established itself as the premier organ of unity in Africa. He said everybody had a role to play to address key challenges on the continent.

Dr Kayode Ajulo, lawyer to the father of late Timothy Oludare, who died at Hilton Hotel, Ile-Ife, Osun has urged the Nigerian Police to declare Dr Rahman Adedoyin's son, Mr Raheem Adedoyin wanted over the murder. Raheem , the fugitive son of the owner of Hiltons Hotels and Resorts, Ile-Ife arranged how OAU post-graduate student Timothy Adegoke's corpse was evacuated and thrown into the bush.Ajulo in a statement on Thursday, in Abuja said Adedoyin's son should be declared wanted for his alleged ignominious and gruesome acts in the murder case.He said it was curious the intriguing statement made by the Osun State Commissioner of Police, wherein Dr Adedoyin's son was identified as the one who dumped the corpse of the late Adegoke in the bush.“Considering the circumstances of the murder of Oludare, the law enforcement agency ought to exert energy in arresting Adedoyin, who is allegedly at large.“Now that the Police know so much, it is time to start asking more questions: Why has Raheem Adedoyin not been declared wanted and an intelligence team churned out to arrest him?“Why would the hoteliers broke into the Late Timothy Adegoke's room on the first night when he actually paid for two nights at the hotel?“Why have not the suspects been charged before a Court of Competent record as prescribed by the Constitution,” he asked.

Meanwhile, he had earlier contacted his wife to inform her that he was staying in a hotel.Following a police investigation, money paid by Oludare for lodging was traced to one Adedeji Tobiloba Adesola, who works in the hotel.Sources, however, alleged that Prince Adedoyin and some of his workers initially denied that Oludare was at the hotel.Meanwhile, late Oludare, who was also a Director of Finance of a private firm, FJJ Company, was said to be frequented Ile-Ife between October 22 to October 24; October 29 to October 31; and November 5 to November 7, 2021 to take his MBA exams at the Obafemi Awolowo University and he had been consecutively lodging at Hilton Hotels and Resorts.“On Friday, November 5th, 2021, Adegoke Timothy Oludare contacted his wife (in Abuja) that he had arrived Ile-Ife and had lodged at an undisclosed hotel,” the deceased's brother was quoted.“The following morning, her wife was calling Adegoke Oludare's phone line to extend morning greeting but the line kept ringing with no one picking up the call. The line was ringing throughout the day (Saturday 6th, 2021).“Adegoke's wife contacted relatives and the family immediately sent a delegation to the examination centre of the OAU to confirm whether their son was in the examination hall. The examination coordinator checked the attendance for Saturday and Sunday (6th and 7th November) and they discovered that Adegoke Timothy Oludare did not come to take the exams.“OAU Management and relatives proceeded to the police station to report the matter and investigation began. In the effort of the OAU Management, the chairman of the hoteliers' association was contacted to reach out to hotels whether Adegoke Oludare lodged in any of the hotels but no positive response was received.“On Wednesday, November 10th, 2021, wife of Adegoke Timothy Oludare discovered the receipt of the hotel in which her husband lodged the penultimate weekend to November 5th, 2021. The name of this Hotel was Hilton Hotels and Resorts.“The investigation panel proceeded to Hilton to enquire whether Adegoke Oludare lodged again in the penultimate weekend which was 5th November 2021. They met the proprietor of this hotel (Chief Rahman Adegoke Adedoyin) but they denied that Adegoke Timothy Oludare lodged at their hotel.“On Thursday 11 November 2021, investigation revealed that Adegoke Timothy Oludare transferred the sum of N37,000 from his account to a lady whose name is Adedeji Tobiloba Adesola and the details of the transfer showed that the transaction took place on Friday, 5th November 2021 that Adegoke Oludare's wife claimed that her husband reported to have lodged at a hotel in Ile Ife.”“Upon tracking the phone number on the said account, it was discovered that the owner of that number was at that moment at the Hilton Hotels and Resorts owned by Rahman Adedoyin. Police proceeded to the venue and Adedeji Tobiloba Adesola was fished out to be a staffer of the said hotel. When Adesola was apprehended, she confessed to have allocated Room 35 of Hilton Hotels and Resorts to Oludare the same Friday. She was arrested and whisked to the Police headquarters in Osogbo. On November 12, 2021, her confession led to the arrest of 6 other suspects by the police including a self-acclaimed Alfa (Islamic cleric) who claimed to have left Ile-Ife for Ejigbo on the same Friday Oludare was said to have disappeared. Before the Alfa's confession, police tracking had shown that Oludare's phone was moved from Ile-Ife to Ejigbo between 5 and 6 November, 2021.Meanwhile, on November 13, Adedoyin was alleged to have mobilised three top lawyers to Osogbo in order to pervert the investigation process. But he could not have his way until his arrest by the Police.Meanwhike, Ramon Adedoyin, has denied involvement in the death of Timothy Adegoke. “I appeal to everyone to be patient and allow police to do their work and thorough investigation. Kenraali Moussa Traoren valtakausi Malissa kesti 23 vuotta. Toimittajana Raimo Tyykiluoto.

This is episode 25 and we’re focusing on the second half of 1976. Last episode we heard about the Cold War machinations which had led to Cuba and Russian coming to the assistance of the MPLA in Angola. We also heard about the deployment of black troops inside the SADF for the first time and how South Africa was rearming itself as its defence equipment was out of date. 32 Battalion had been deployed to the cutline at the border and was highly active, as were SWAPO’s PLAN insurgents. Meanwhile the diplomatic storm that had broken over South Africa’s invasion of Angola continued to rage with the OAU breaking its own membership rules to accept the MPLA in as the official and yet unelected government of Angola. ON the security front South Africa was in a terrible situation. In June 1976 the Soweto Uprising shook the Pretoria government with both its ferocity and its unique character. For the first time black youth living in the township to the south west of Johannesburg decided enough was enough and went on the rampage in what was an historic event as they rose up against the apartheid government. Watching all of this was the International Community which was to increase sanctions on Pretoria shortly. While a full arms embargo had still not been enforced -that was only to follow in 1977, Pretoria had effectively entered pariah status already and most nations were already loathe to sell weapons of any sort to security forces who were being photographed shooting teenagers in the streets. After Operation Savannah the government forbade the SADF to cross the border into Angola as it tried to reset relations with neutral African countries – most of whom had been shocked by the extent of the SADF’s invasion – all the way to the edge of the capital Luanda. That frightened Zambia for example which was tinkering with support for the ANC and other liberation movements.

This is episode 22 and we’re looking at the end of Operation Savannah which was winding down by early January 1976. We have dealt with various Battle Groups setup by the South Africans as they sought to secure southern Angola – including Foxbat and last week, Orange which had experienced a major battle south of Quibala. A fourth battle group called X-Ray led by Commandant SWJ Kotze had been formed in early December 1975 and was tasked with securing the important Benguela railway line. Unita leader Jonas Savimbi had asked SADF commanders to help him control this line which was crucial in order to deliver Congo commodities to the coastal ports. IF he controlled the railway then the MPLA in Luanda would find their income severely curtailed and would also be a propaganda coup. X-Ray was comprised of a Unita company along with an armoured car group and an artillery section and faced Fapla at a battle at Luso on the 9th December. The MPLA armed wing lost over 250 men to the South Africans at Luso, along with a substantial amount of equipment including heavy weapons which were duly handed over to Unita after three days of fighting. The OAU postponed its emergency meeting once more – to the 18th January. But between Christmas and mid-January there would be a few more engagements and something that the SADF HQ called the Day of Disaster was imminent. That was the 4th January 1976 SADF anti-aircraft gunners stationed in central Angola near Mussende spotted what they thought was an enemy helicopter. So far their attempts at shooting down enemy aircraft had failed but this time they would succeed. The only problem was it was a SA Air Force Aérospatiale SA 330C Puma Helicoptern from 19 Squadron that was flying Staff Officers between Mussende & Carriango.

The Executive Council and Cabinet endorsed the team’s recommendations - agreeing that in order to improve student success and the effectiveness of Ivy Tech’s online course delivery a wider team of people needed to do further study of online courses and make recommendations for how to proceed.  That work began in earnest in August of 2018 under the name “Online Academic Unit.” In today’s episode we talk with four faculty directly engaged with the Online Academic Unit work to hear their perspectives on the work.   Call To Action Review the OAU Mission, Vision, and Objectives as well as the Alpha Implementation Information (see below).  Ask questions if you have them, either to your campus representative(s) on the OAU, one of our guests or Kara and Matthew.   Get In Touch! Following the presentation, we engaged participants in a facilitated discussion around what they liked about the recommendation, what opportunities they noticed, and a lengthy discussion on benefits and challenges of this new proposed model. The recommendation that the team brought forward is to create an Online Academic Unit.  This unit would create a new academic department that is responsible for the scheduling, development, and delivery of all online courses at Ivy Tech.  This new model will allow us to consolidate online course support to a single statewide unit. This consolidation will allow all students, faculty, and staff to receive the same level of support regarding course development and course delivery. In that July 31 meeting, the recommendations were accepted and the group determined that the project should be moved into a second analysis phase rather than implementation. Since late August of 2018 eleven teams plus a steering committee have been engaged in a large scale restructure project as we consider the hub team recommendations and develop the Online Academic Unit. The project has been moving at a consistent pace and we intend to have portions of it moved into implementation by Fall of 2019 – that is what we want to update you on today.  This is an alpha implementation of the Online Academic Unit which will allow a smaller group of students, faculty and staff to experience this model and to provide direct input and feedback on the model. This alpha phase will launch in Fall of 2019. Programmatic Models Ivy Tech has sixteen programs approved for distance delivery.  Of these, two are approved only for distance delivery. These are MPRO (Manufacturing, Production, and Operations) and LIBR (Library Technical Assistant). Both years one and two of the programmatic courses of these two programs will begin operating within the Online Academic Unit model. Additionally, many of the programs in the School of IT are currently offered online. Program courses in the 2019-2020 first semester sequence of these programs will begin operating within the Online Academic Unit model. Only the additional liberal arts/general education courses described below under course based models will transition to the Online Academic Unit for the alpha launch in Fall 2019. Course Based Models Ivy Tech’s model for online delivery has long emphasized courses over programs. Therefore, beginning to transition courses into this model on an individual basis has historical logic. This model also aligns with the College’s role as a provider for the iCAP initiative. The college will move all courses currently approved for delivery under the iCAP model, with the exception of ENGL 111, to the Online Academic Unit for the alpha launch in Fall 2019. The specific courses in the iCAP model are currently being updated, but at this time the courses this will impact are BIOL 101, COMM 101, HUMA 118, MATH 136, POLS 101, SDEV 120.

Staff Discuss the Online Academic Unit   In July 2018, a panel made up of campus and systems office representatives presented recommendations to the College’s Executive Council and Cabinet related to work done as a part of the hubs. The Executive Council and Cabinet endorsed the team’s recommendations - agreeing that in order to improve student success and the effectiveness of Ivy Tech’s online course delivery a wider team of people needed to do further study of online courses and make recommendations for how to proceed.  That work began in earnest in August of 2018 under the name “Online Academic Unit.” In today’s episode we talk with five staff members directly engaged with the Online Academic Unit work to hear their perspectives on the work.   Call To Action Review the OAU Mission, Vision, and Objectives as well as the Alpha Implementation Information (see below).  Ask questions if you have them, either to your campus representative(s) on the OAU, one of our guests or Kara and Matthew.   Get In Touch! 12 diktaattoria

Yhdysvallat tuki Gaddafia. Amerikkalaiset halusivat turvata omien öljy-yhtiöittensä aseman ja suojata oman lentotukikohtansa Libyassa. Samoin ajattelivat britit. Tilaus tuli Neuvostoliiton kautta. Yhtiön esitteissä asetehdasta kutsuttiin ompelukoneiden valmistuspaikaksi, vaikka koneet tikkasivat Kalashnikovin piipuista luoteja eri puolilla maailmaa Gaddafin varustamissa terrori-iskuissa. Gaddafin sanotaan vierailleen uhriensa luona aika ajoin. He olivat kuin makaabereja matkamuistoja. Jotkut olivat olleet jäädytettynä niinkin kauan kuin 25 vuotta. James L. Hope joins Congo Live! to discuss his time in the Congo and the current situation in Baltimore. He was also in the Congo in the 1960s and kept the tradition alive of supporting liberation movement on the African continent. We will also discuss current affairs in Baltimore. Bio: James L. Hope is the International Advisor of the African Scientific Institute (ASI). He first set foot on the African Continent in 1951 when his ship stopped in Alexandria, Egypt on its way to Beirut, Lebanon where he took up residence and attended school. Over the years Mr. Hope assisted in the establishment of the National School of Law and Administration (ENDA) in what was then the newly independent Republic of Congo (now DRC). While there, he also provided materiel and logistical support for the Pan-Africanist Congress of South Africa – which was the only South African liberation movement operating outside of South Africa at the time – and the National Front for the Liberation of Angola (FNLA) which at the time was recognized by the OAU as the true and legitimate representative of the Angolan liberation effort. Upon his return to his birthplace, Washington, D.C. he joined the African-American Institute (AAI) which had been established by his friends Dr. William Leo Hansberry, William Steen and Thurlow Tibbs. While at the AAI Mr. Hope ran a scholarship program for leaders from the unliberated territories of Africa, many of whom he had met earlier as they passed through the liberation exile center in Kinshasa that was financed by President Kwame Nkruma and hosted by the FNLA.
