In this somewhat Halloween-flavored episode, Rostam Batmanglij (Rostam) (ex-Vampire Weekend, The OA) joins the show! Taking a little detour from his solo and collab music, and writing and producing for other artists like Haim, Charli XCX, and Frank, Ocean, Rostam and I primarily talk about his new score for the film The Persian Version. Rostam's score is quite subtle and restrained, marrying ancient Iranian music with Western classical music, as well as some pop and more mainstream musical influences from the last several decades. His score is capped by a cover of Cyndi Lauper's classic "Girls Just Want To Have Fun", featuring some very cool Iranian musical twists. As always, Rostam and I travel along various tangents, including his interest in film music from a young age, his first post-college music gig (with composer Craig Wedren (Yellowjackets, School of Rock)) and how this experience influenced his work on Vampire Weekend, and his Iranian cultural identity. The Persian Version is available digitally while Rostam's score, and much of his other music, is available on all major platforms. Meanwhile, you can find out more about Rostam on his website.

Yellowjackets might be taking a break, but The Watchers doesn't quit. Jodie and Andrea are using the off-season break to share the movies that made them the kind of people who were destined to be obsessed with a show like Yellowjackets. This week, Jodie grabbed Andrea by bangs (and pulled us all up from the depths of Radio Flyer despair) to introduce her to the absolute romp that is the 1985 comedy dance romance, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun. Starring Sarah Jessica Parker and Helen Hunt, this delightful little movie provided some much-needed relief from our last two movies, which, we'll admit, included a surprising amount of child abuse. We talk about the tropes that populate this genre of movie and Jodie argues Girls Just Wanna Have Fun is a dance movie pioneer. We discuss our love for Helen Hunt and her very cool hats. Jodie talks about her love of dance, and Andrea talks about her love of Bruce Springsteen. This is honestly a pretty silly episode. We had a lot of fun. Hope you have fun listening!Mentioned in this episode:"31 Years Later, Girls Just Want To Have Fun is a Ridiculous Dance Party""America's Love for TV Dance Shows Has Long History""Dancing in the Dark" music videoNext week, we're watching Andrea's pick, the 1992 black comedy, Death Becomes Her. In this episode we continue our conversation based upon Chapters 3 & 4 of Lucy Cook's book Bitch: on the female of the species. We started off the conversation doing a deep dive on the famous Bateman experiment that purported to reveal 3 principles concerning variation in male and female reproductive success and how those differences drive sexual selection. After reviewing the experiments and what they were reported to show, Sarah then discussed some more recent papers that closely re-analyzed the original 1948 experiment and how that revealed critical flaws and biases in the study which weakens the strength of its conclusion. We were left with thinking it is more Bateman Hypothesis than Bateman's Principles. Once we established that it is not correct to characterize females as being coy and unwilling to mate more than once, we explored the reasons why females would exhibit a level of promiscuity that rivals that expected from males. We discussed the orgasm as a feature in sexual activity and how scientists have tried to characterize this physiological response in other non-human primates. Image of O face adapted from drawing in Bitch from Chevalier-Skolnikoff's research. We had a spirited conversation about the evolution of the female orgasm and how it might influence females seeking multiple mates. We ended the podcast with a discussion of sexual cannibalism. We explored the reasons why, in some species of spiders, the males are so much smaller than the adult females which facilitates her eating the male. Although killing and eating a potential mate seems maladaptive, we discussed the various reasons why it may be adaptive for the female and for the male to kill or be killed. Matt talks about his favorite party songs to get the party started and includes the last song to end the event. Important Links View the complete list of best party songs. See all Wedding Songs Podcast episodes Podcast Transcript Welcome to the 84th episode of the Wedding Songs Podcast. I am Matt Campbell and today I am going to have one of my favorite, and I know everyone else's favorite, topics. Best party songs. These may not be the best songs to get everyone out on the dance floor (although I am going to include those also), but these could also be background songs as well. And, also songs that are trending right now. If you prefer to read the list or listen to the list, you can do so on our website MyWeddingSongs.com. While you are there make sure to sign up for our monthly newsletter. In it, we tell you about all the new songs released in the prior month and also great trending songs and forgotten hits you can play on your wedding day. This episode is going to be a little bit different, I am not going to include song lyrics because I am just going to go thru the 200 songs just to categorize those by genre and a couple of events as well (I will get to that in just a second). So, speaking of starting off, I am going to start off with 37 songs I think could really get everyone out on the dance floor. They are party songs and ones that you want to make sure you at least have in your music library. The first one is “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)” by Whitney Houston, “Yeah” by Usher, “Dancing Queen” by ABBA, the great Disco song. “Fergalicious” by Fergie, “Get Low” by Lil Jon, and the East Side Boyz featuring Ying Yang Twins, and “This Is How We Do It” by Montell Jordan. This one is exploding recently because it is in a car commercial. “Uptown Funk” by Mark Ronson feat. Bruno Mars, “We Found Love” by Rihanna featuring Calvin Harris. This is a great song to really get the party started and get everybody excited. Next is “I Gotta Feeling” by Black Eyed Peas and “September” by Earth Wind and Fire. One of the great dance songs of all time. “Dynamite” by Taio Cruz and the newer song, “About Damn Time” by Lizzo. “Shut Up And Dance” by WALK THE MOON. There are a few Michael Jackson songs we can have on the list, but it seems like “Billie Jean” is on everybody's playlist. “Footloose” by Kenny Loggins with the right crowd, and “C'Mon ‘N Ride It (The Train)” by Quad City DJ's, which came out in the '90s and will get everybody doing the train around the dance floor. Next is “The Humpty Dance” by Digital Underground who recently lost their lead singer. “Get Down On It” by Kool and The Gang and “Baby Got Back” by Sir Mix-A-Lot. “Hey Ya!” by Outkast, and “Friends In Low Places” by Garth Brooks is the first Country song on the list, which is a sing-along song you can have on your list. “Timber” by Pitbull featuring Kesha, “No Hands” by Waka Flocka Flame and Roscoe Dash featuring Wale, “24K Magic” by Bruno Mars, and of course the “Cha-Cha Slide” by Mr. C if you want to have a group dance song, along with the next son “Cupid Shuffle” by Cupid. “Cotton Eye Joe” by Rednex and “Hot In Herre” by Nelly. One of the great party songs, “Shots” by LMFAO, and the second Country song, “Fishin' In The Dark” by Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Listen to the lyrics to make sure they are Wedding appropriate if you are going to play it at a wedding and your Wedding couple is OK with it. “Mr. Brightside” by The Killers, “Time Of Our Lives” by Pitbull featuring Ne-Yo. Another group dance song , “Wobble” by V.I.C., “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” by Cyndi Lauper, and “Shout” by The Isley Brothers or by Otis Day. It is up to you which version you prefer. It is just a great group dance song you can have. “All The Small Things” by Blink-182. And finally, “Boogie Shoes” by KC And The Sunshine Band. So that is just to get things started off. Next up let us talk about 10 songs for slow dance songs starting off with “Tennessee Whiskey” ...

In this special bonus episode, Sam joins Switched On Pop co-host Charlie Harding to talk Cyndi Lauper. Many fall for "Girls Just Want To Have Fun," but Sam's favorite song is the slow burner "All Through The Night," save for one moment: the synthesizer solo. For Sam, this solo never fit in. Charlie investigates the source of Sam's musical malady and uncovers how the '80s got its groove. Hear Sam on another episode of Switched On Pop making the case for why Labrinth's "Sexy MF" should be a modern classic here. Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Laura Bell Bundy over Zoom video! Actress, singer, and Tony nominated Broadway star, Laura Bell Bundy just released her new single “American Girl”, with the video premiering February 12th, 2021. It will be the third single off of her upcoming album “Women of Tomorrow” coming out spring 2021. Women Of Tomorrow is encapsulating the experience of the modern woman today. These original songs cover issues like equal pay, breaking the glass ceiling, over-apologizing, the mental load of motherhood, pitting women against each other, holding women to unrealistic beauty standards, the obsession with social media, ownership over women's bodies, doing it all, and the relationship to men. “American Girl” powerfully addresses the hardships and standards of being a woman in America, lyrically and cinematically. The first single from the album “Get It Girl, You Go” featured Anika Nonie Rose & Shoshana Bean, the first single and the video, which premiered on People online, celebrated the centennial anniversary of women’s suffrage and showcased all the democratic female candidates who ran for national office in 2020 and includes cameos from celebrities such as Brittany Snow, Anna Camp, Cecily Strong, Samantha Bee, Ingrid Michaelson, Mickey Guyton & various other stars of Broadway and TV.The second single was a stirring rendition of the Cyndi Lauper classic “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” premiered on Parade online. In honor of October being Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Bundy released the harrowing video for her version, which depicts a woman living and triumphing through a DV situation to raise funds for victims.LBB has also started her own Podcast, named after the album, which powerfully and deeply dives into the issues each song on her album presents, examines the history of those matters and provides solutions for moving forwardAbout Laura Bell BundyLaura Bell Bundy (album’s conceiver, co-writer, co-producer) is a recording artist, songwriter, director, producer, actress and mother who gave birth naturally without drugs.Since debuting at age 9 at Radio City Music Hall, Laura Bell Bundy has originated the stage roles of Tina in Ruthless (Outer Critics/ Drama Desk Nominations), Amber in Broadway’s Hairspray, Elle Woods in Legally Blonde The Musical (Tony Nomination), played Glinda in Wicked and recently received an Ovation nomination for her role of Charity in Reprise 2.0’s ‘Sweet Charity.’ She’s starred and appeared in over 100 hundred episodes of Television including roles on Perfect Harmony, Good Behavior, American Gods, How I Met Your Mother, The Guest Book, Angie Tribeca, Idiotsitter, Hart of Dixie, Fuller House, Documentary Now, AJ & The Queen, and Anger Management, where she was not paid equally to male co-stars. Films include Dream Girls, Jumanji, Life With Mikey, Adventures of Huck Finn, After The Reality, and the award winning Beauty Mark among others.LBB has toured in concert worldwide since 2010 where she truly struggled with commitment phobia. She didn’t wanna be tied down or told what to do! That’s when she penned hundreds of songs as an EMI/Sony songwriter (2009-2016) including her Universal Records album, Achin’ & Shakin’ which debuted on Billboard’s Top 5 Country Music Chart, and has a gold record in Norway. She was nominated for CMT Breakout Video for Giddy On Up. Her Big Machine album “Another Piece Of Me” received rave reviews in 2015 with all four music videos written, directed, & produced by Bundy. Her music has been featured in several video games including Just Dance 3, Just Dance Now, and Guitar Hero. The merry partners are all ready to get down to some seafaring except, whoops, Reed announces that he had to cancel the one charter they had booked without giving anyone any notice, and he doesn't seem to be that interested in rescheduling it, or lining up any more business. Jake and Amanda's attempt to get him on track just ends in Amanda demanding her money back. Meanwhile, Jo discovers the secret trap door, and though she initially accepts Reed's explanation that it's to save him lugging valuables on and off, it's on her mind when Jake warns her that, according to the state of California, Reed's boat officially does not exist. Will Jo survive her own curiosity? Billy and Alison's attempts to make a long-distance relationship work are hampered by Billy's horny new co-worker, who's apparently determined to set Billy up with someone immediately and won't take "I have a girlfriend" for an answer. Out of his mind recovering in the hospital, a delirious Michael starts babbling some incriminating remarks about blood alcohol this and Matt that -- unfortunately, within Sydney's hearing. Matt and Michael aren't sure what she's going to do with this information, but they're not thrilled she has it. Remember how Amanda thought Reed was a creep and Jake thought he was a con artist? Apparently they don't, because Jake has no problem fixing the engine of a boat Reed totally does not own, for free, as a favour to Jo, and considering coming in with him 60/40 in a partnership, as his full-time mechanic. To get Jake hooked on the seafaring life, Reed invites him and Amanda out on a harbor cruise, which apparently sparks all of Amanda's happy memories of boating in her youth; no sooner has Jo volunteered to stake Reed the collateral he needs to buy the boat than Amanda is slagging her off and throwing her money at Reed. Between her misgivings about getting into business with Amanda and her suspicions about what might be in a suitcase full of valuables Reed has asked her to store, Jo has a lot on her mind! Michael is living at the beach house again, but all his focus -- such as it is; he's taking a lot of painkillers, so his vision's probably pretty blurry -- is on convincing Jane to take him back. Sydney joins Jane in securing a restraining order against him, but it's only so that it's easier for Sydney to try to worm her way back into his affections if he legally has no other options. Michael, of course, is only interested in using her, and in the short term, she's a handy go-between for a fraudulent new painkiller prescription when he can't get a legitimate refill for himself. Billy finally breaks the news of his promotion to Alison, and is much less confident than she is that a long-distance relationship can work for them. And while Jeffrey makes it clear to Matt that he doesn't tend to date anyone long enough for it to impinge on his career, Matt starts to realize he may not be happy getting into Jeffrey's closet with him. We just want to have fun with a champion cat roaming town to town to get electroshocked and fight trolls in CAT'S EYE. And when that doesn't do it for us we go to the greatest troll in cinematic history: Helen Hunt in GIRLS JUST WANT TO HAVE FUN. It's been thirty-five years since both these films announced themselves with much dance from Sarah Jessica Parker and merriment in tormenting James Woods and we felt that right now the world needs to be reminded of these simple joys. Whoo! What a ride we took on this one! This double feature starts in a simpler time, the 80's, when every teenager had a large tree right outside their window for convenient escapes. We watched Girls Just Want To Have Fun and one of us had significantly more fun than the other. Then we took a sharp left turn and watched Splice, which leaves us with a lot of important ethical questions such as "is it cheating if you fuck a half-clone of your significant other?"

Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house, no creature was stirring, not even Mel...cuz she be sleeping!!! Mel tells a story about the Covina Massacre. Rei tells two stories: one about a shocking Christmas present and the other about bath salts.
Mel and Rei are back and they are nit picking a whole lot at episode one! Rei tells the story about Dirty John. Mel goes back to the early 1900's with the mystery disappearance of Bobby Dunbar. Plus there is a whole lot of bantering going on this episode.
During Tea Time, Mel talks about 2 nuns who embezzled about $500,000 from a catholic school in Torrance, California. Rei talks about Jessica Runyon, a Missouri woman who went missing until her body was discovered along with others. Plus, a lot of tea spilling and venting going on at this party.
Mel and Rei introduce their new podcast and talk about what sparked their interest in true crime and dark stories. Mel tells the story about the murder of John Walsh's son, Adam Walsh. Rei tells a personal story about Machine Gun Kelly, public enemy number 1 during the 1930s.

It's some sort of SPOOKTOBERFEST OF SCARES as Ali shows Jon April Fool's Day, the first official “horror” movie in MMIS history (assuming we aren't counting Return To Oz or Girls Just Want To Have Fun). But is it horror? Is it comedy? Is it a soft reboot of Just One Of the Guys? Jon wants to know. Ali wants to get out of that dang well. Both are confused by the surprising lack of nudity.April Fool's Day stars Biff Tannen, the actual guy from Just One of the Guys, one of the girls from Just One Of the Guys, Ryan O'Neal's son, and at least one Jason victim.
1985 dance movie spectacular Girls Just Want To Have Fun - have you heard of it? Probably not, according to the internet. But writer and podcaster Jo Thornely is obsessed with it. And I kind of am too now to be honest. From the quotes, to the cameos, to the pioneering dance movie tropes, this is an 80s gem. Let's go deep.
This week, the boys explore William Gibson's "Neuromancer", "The Blue Lagoon" (1980), David Byrne's "American Utopia", season four of "Shetland", the new "Tomb Raider" movie, "Girls Just Want To Have Fun" (1985), and did Paul and Spike bother watching the rebooted "Roseanne"? Listen and see.... ----- The theme tune to 'Tooo Grumpy Critics' is called "The Only One" - it's performed by Three Across, and is written by Eric Brock. POW! It's a corker! Got a review? A comment? 선곡표 흑인 올페 orfeu negro - manha de carnaval 미션 임파서블 2 M:I2 - carnival 댄서 dancer - take me to church 건축학개론 - 기억의 습작 기쿠지로의 여름 - summer 마네킹 mannequin - nothing's gonna stop us now 써니 -Girls Just Want To Have Fun 수상한 그녀 - 나성에 가면
Divabetics just want to have fun! Join us for our seventh anniversary of diabetes podcasting with musical inspiration from Cyndi Lauper. In the 30 plus years since Cyndi Lauper released her career-defining hit, Girls Just Want To Have Fun has been described as a "rebellious sing-along" and an “feminist anthem”. The song's music video was one of the first to feature women of multiple races. The one thing I really wanted was to have multi-racial girls so that every little girl could actually see herself in it, and it would be kind of contagious that everyone was entitled—no matter what race or color or anything—you were entitled to this joyful experience, Cyndi Lauper said. The result was a song and video that caught the attention of the mainstream by defying it. For a minute, I made it popular to be the odd guy out, Lauper said. All of the sudden, the straight guy was the odd guy out, just for a minute—and that, to me, was justice. Guests included Susan Weiner RD, MS, CDE, CDN , Megrette Fletcher MEd, RD, CDE, Susan McCaslin, Poet Lorraine Brooks, Janis Roszler MSFT, RD, LD/N, CDE, FAND, the Charlie’s Angels of Outreach and Mama Rose Marie. Throughout this podcast we will be playing selected songs from the Essential Collection of Cyndi Lauper courtesy of SONY Music.
After having the flu for a week and binging GLOW on Netflix, Mat hunkered down and put together an episode revolving around wrestlers in music videos. You can hear about Mat's story hosting an event at E3 and just how sick he got as he discusses "We're Not Gonna Take It" by Bif Naked, "It Doesn't Matter" by Wyclef Jean, and "Girls Just Want To Have Fun" by Cyndi Lauper.

Martin Page is a song-writing legend. Among his biggest hits are "These Dreams" by Heart, "King Of Wishful Thinking" by Go West and the immortal "We Built This City" by Starship, which remains completely ubiquitous despite topping many "worst song of all time" type lists. He started out in a funky synth-pop band called Q-Feel that may be best known for the song "Dancing In Heaven" from the Girls Just Want To Have Fun soundtrack. His song-writing success and collaborations with further artists like Robbie Robertson, Kim Carnes and Earth Wind & Fire have made him one of the most successful songwriters ever. Not to mention, it's freed him up to pursue a successful solo career ("In The House Of Stone and Light") on his own terms. The man is a Hall of Famer, plain and simple.

Oh do they? This week, Ali shows Jon a little slice of her childhood with 1985's Girls Just Want To Have Fun, a look at the sordid underbelly of Chicagoland dance competitions. Jon is baffled by the lack of Chicago accents and the sub-Blues Brothers level of Chicago geographical continuity. Ali struggles to get a word in edgewise. Girls Just Want To Have Fun was directed by Alan Metter and written by Amy Spies and stars Sarah Jessica Parker, Helen Hunt, Not-Joey-Lawrence, and Jonathan Silverman. It does not star Shannon Doherty, no matter what the poorly photoshopped cover leads you to believe. Seriously, Biff Yeager has more screen time. Hey, we have an Amazon affiliate link on the site now, so follow it and buy things so we can break even on this venture one day!
Sarah Jessica Parker and Helen Hunt remind us why the 80's should stay dead in this zaniest, craziest, wildest, freshest, bubblegum romp. Sarah Jessica Parker plays Laney, a girl who just wants to dance, and Helen Hunt plays Lynne who just wants to put weird stuff in her hair (lobsters, grasshoppers, dinosaurs, etc...). But the pair are thwarted by the reality of life and the harshness of societal norms (like jobs and school). The movie is the 80's in a can of pepper spray applied directly to the head. Everything is pink. Everything. Fine. Everyone has atrocious fashion sense. Fine. The music is awful princess pop. Fine. If you can get past those things there's still more non-decade specific problems that this movie suffers from (and rewards with). Individual Ratings: Over the top action:Cheesy effects:Horrendous acting:Laugh-out-loud-ability:Ridiculous stunts:Gratuitous nudity:Memorable one-liners: Overall Ratings: Good Movie Quality: Bad Movie Quality:
In what may prove to be the longest title of any episode of this podcast, Terry does explore the Negativland song that inspired the title of this episode but there is so much more. First, Terry briefly considers not talking about TV anymore then proceeds to recommend three TV series (The Honorable Woman, Sonic Highways & A to Z. Then, a number of movies are discussed most of which are availble on Netflix Watch Instant. Some are soon to leave like Girls Just Want To Have Fun while some are still coming like Chef. There are some New Year's Eve viewing suggestions including the previously discussed One From The Heart which recently returned to the Netflix streaming service. Finally, the discussion goes to music with post scripts on discussions of She & Him and Guided by Voices. However, the heart of the music discussion is a consideration of the Negativland song from 1989. Since artists like The Flaming Lips are taking pop recordings like Sgt. Pepper and making them stranger should artists like Taylor Swift seek out more adventurous recordings and make them work in the pop realm? This smorgasbord of an episode tries to refer back to elements of the earlier episodes while laying out clues to podcast episodes that should be forthcoming in 2015.
