Why do we claim to have zero tolerance for bullying when it remains pervasive in society? In this episode, we sit down with Jennifer Fraser to discuss the profound impact of bullying on the human brain. Jennifer uses scientific evidence to illustrate how bullying hurts not just youths' self-esteem and emotions, it has a physical impact on their growing brains. We also discuss the notion of how tough love, old school and other terms continue to be used to excuse toxic behavior, along with how ballet training can begin to heal from past trauma and create a healthier environment for dancers. Tune in for this wide-ranging conversation where the sole focus is on what's most important -- the health and well-being of our kids. In this episode of the 'Let's Talk Brain Health' podcast, Dr. Jennifer Fraser discusses her book 'The Bullied Brain', exploring the neurological effects of bullying and how it physically alters the brain. She details her interdisciplinary approach, blending neuroscience with social and psychological perspectives to address bullying. She shares case studies and research findings on the brain areas affected by abusive behaviors, emphasizing the prefrontal cortex, hippocampus, corpus callosum, and amygdala. Jennifer explains that bullying, even verbal or online, causes visible damage to brain architecture, challenging the misconception that it toughens individuals. She discusses her work on creating safe environments in schools and sports, the disturbing trend of gaslighting, and the crucial role of empathy in societal well-being. This episode aims to shift the narrative around bullying from a dismissive attitude to one informed by neuroscience, advocating for a culture of brain safety. 00:00 Welcome to Let's Talk Brain Health with Dr. Jennifer Fraser 00:15 Unveiling the Bullied Brain: Insights from Dr. Fraser's Journey 01:57 A Deep Dive into the Neuroscience of Bullying 04:59 Exploring the Brain's Vulnerability and Resilience to Bullying 12:46 The Power of Brain Health in Overcoming Bullying 21:24 Case Studies and Future Directions in Bullying Research 33:36 Rapid Fire Questions: Empowering Insights for Brain Health Resources Learn more in Dr. Frazer's “The Bullied Brain” blog featured in Psychology Today Explore Dr. Frazer's website Connect with Jennifer on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/virtualbrainhealthcenter/support

The research is clear…our brains change after experiencing domestic violence and narcissistic abuse. The actual structure of our brains changes after experiencing this long-term coercive control and trauma. If you have experienced brain fog, issues with concentration and focus, constant hypervigilance and irritability, you need to listen to this episode. My guest, Jennifer Frasier, the author of The Bullied Brain shares a look at her research using brain scans of those who have experienced bullying and relationship abuse. We discuss the structural changes to our amygdala, corpus callosum, and hippocampus and the consequences of these changes. We also discuss how malleable and amazing our brains are and specific strategies on how to correct and rewire those structures in our brains.Jennifer Fraser has a PhD in Comparative Literature from the University of Toronto where she was trained to take different discourses out of their silos, put them into an arena, and see if the conversation changed. Putting bullying, abuse and brain science into the arena significantly changed the conversation. In her new book, The Bullied Brain, she uses science to debunk myths that prevail in our society in terms of bullying and abuse. Her goal is to educate and share with all who need it the key takeaway which is that the brain is wired to repair and recover regardless of what a target has suffered. We can all benefit from learning brain science and thus becoming empowered and inspired to restore our health and happiness. This is the first episode of a joint venture between Jennifer Fraser and myself. Jennifer Fraser is the author of The Bullied Brain: Heal Your Scars and Restore Your Health. She has a PhD in Comparative Literature and The Bullied Brain is her fourth book. She draws on medical, neuroscientific, and neurobiological research to examine what happens to brains that are bullied and abused. Jennifer's an award-winning educator and works as a coach, consultant, and international presenter. The podcast is a dialogue that works in the first season like a coaching session. Eric shares his childhood experiences of being abused and Jennifer discusses the implications for my brain and for recovery. Our goal is to use Eric's childhood abuse as a case study as most people don't learn about their brains or about how abuse impacts their brains. The research is clear that the brain is innately wired to repair and recover when we know the harm was done and the evidence-based practices to heal. This is the focus of Jennifer's book, but it comes to life in the podcast as Eric bravely walks us through the abuse done to him and his many strategies for healing his neurological scars. For all those who have suffered bullying, abuse, and trauma, join us to look at it through the lens of brain science and learn ways to repair the harm done. New episodes will be released every other week, starting on 7 June. Use the link below to subscribe or search for "Bullied Brain" in your podcast player. Our culture is so steeped in bullying and abuse — from children's playgrounds to the upper echelons of leadership — that we've come to normalize the behavior and overlook the wreckage. This bullying paradigm has parents, teachers and coaches believing they must be tough to the point of emotional abuse in order for children to acquire the grit and resilience needed to attain excellence in a competitive world. Setting high expectations in an atmosphere of safety, trust and empathy is light years away from using threats, humiliation, and cruelty if the goal is high achievement. Neuroscientists have found visual evidence in brain scans of the damage that occurs when subjected to bullying and abuse. The bullied brain correlates with failure to perform, substance abuse, aggressive behavior, chronic disease, and mental illness. Dr. Fraser shares not only how to survive bullying, but how to push back against the entrenched role it plays in society.
While there are some stronger and broader laws in particular states, there is currently no federal standard defining, let alone outlawing, workplace bullying if the case does not involve harassment or discrimination of a member of a “protected status group” based on their race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, or disability. And yet, according to a 2021 survey commissioned by the Workplace Bullying Institute, 30% of adult Americans say they are currently being bullied or have experienced bullying at work, and that number jumps up to 39% for the currently employed Americans who were surveyed. That's not a small, insignificant problem. That's a lot of the working population. And the results also show that instances of bullying have actually increased in recent years with the expansion of remote work. But advocates are pushing legislators in different states to strengthen laws to protect workers from bullying in the workplace, and there are signs of hope concerning a bill in Oregon that would do just that. In this mini-cast, we speak with Misty Orlando, who has been the primary grassroots lobbyist for the bill, as well as Dr. Jennifer Frazer, author of The Bullied Brain, and Jerry Carbo, president of the National Workplace Bullying Coalition and professor of management at the Grove College of Business at Shippensburg University. I've been hearing from so many of you who have kids who are being bullied or have been bullied, and they are really struggling. I've also heard from many of you whose kid is the bully and acting out in abusive ways towards others.Well, this is a fascinating episode that you want to listen to.My special guest is Dr. Jennifer Fraser, who is the founder of The Bullied Brain (www.bulliedbrain.com). She is an award-winning teacher of 20 years, an international presenter, and a published author. Dr. Fraser is here today to talk about her latest book, The Bullied Brain: Heal Your Scars and Restore Your Health. In this episode, Dr. Fraser explains what we need to understand about how all forms of bullying and abuse affect our tween's and teens' brains and how to help both the bullied and the bully heal.So much of what she shares is extremely helpful in explaining tweens' and teens' behavior, such as grades falling, trouble with problem-solving, wanting to play video games 24/7, anxiety, and skipping school. If we want to support our kids to heal, we need to understand the way the brain works."It appears that our bullying epidemic is not cured by blaming, shaming, and ostracizing. It is time for a revolution in how we think about and how we educate ourselves and children about bullying. It needs to be seen as a medical, not a moral problem, especially in childhood. It needs to be instantly identified. The perpetrator needs to be held accountable. Healing needs to begin."So on that note, let's dive in! What you will learn:What verbal abuse does to our children's brains? What happens to the brain when a child is bullied? Why do kids abuse or bully other kids? Why bullying is more than a moral issue – it's a medical issue. Why the way society deals with abuse is outdated, and what should we be doing instead? What are some things parents can do when their child is being bullied? Why it's so easy for kids (and adults) to partake in cyberbullying. And what this does to our empathy for each other. What happens to a child's brain when a parent gives them the silent treatment?Links from the episode:Website: Check out our Moms of Tweens and Teens website HERESign up for our Moms of Tweens and Teens newsletter HERE Find more encouragement, wisdom, and resources: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/momsoftweensandteens/ Join our Community: https://www.facebook.com/groups/Momsoftweensandteens Find awesome resources on MOTTs University: https://www.mottsuniversity.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/momsoftweensandteens/ Sheryl also has an Inner Circle weekly Parenting Program with a community of like-minded moms, personal coaching, and tons of resources to equip and support you to love well, navigate the challenges and meet your tween and teen's unique needs during these pivotal years. We know physical injury is harm. We also know there's a mind-body connection, and the stress from abuse at work can result in such stress-related symptoms as anxiety and digestive issues. But abusive behavior can also result in physical injury seen on brain scans, meaning psychological injury IS physical injury. In this episode, I talk with Dr. Jennifer Fraser, author of The Bullied Brain, who walks us through the research in neuroscience and offers hope when looking at neuroplasticity: we can restore our brains back to health. Guest Jennifer Fraser, PhD founder of The Bullied Brain shares what she has learned about the resilient nature of humanity as well as damaging impact of abuse and bullying on the brain. She sees brain science as the key to helping people heal from abuse. When we are subjected to a repeated cycle of abuse or bulleying, our minds and bodies start to feel anxious about a threat from a preditor, which activates the sympathetic nervous system without our decision-making process. We are unaware of the automated response of our bodies and brains to threats, and unless we develop strategies to manage this stress, we suffer dramatic impacts on our health. However, if we keep our brains healthy and safe, our brains can be powerful and effective. Let us know what you think of this episode! Leave a review or a comment on our website.
Jennifer earned her PhD from University of Toronto in Comparative Literature and is the Founder of The Bullied Brain. Her third book Teaching Bullies takes lived experience with an abuse crisis and puts it into the context of psychology, psychiatry, education, law, and neuroscience. What's being discovered in neuroscientific labs across the world has the power to change how we understand our brains and lives. This empowering research infuses her latest book The Bullied Brain: Heal Your Scars and Restore Your Health. Neuroscientist Dr. Michael Merzenich says it is "scientifically the most thorough treatment of the subject on planet earth."

Our culture is so seeped in bullying and abuse — from children's playgrounds to the upper echelons of leadership — that we've come to normalize the behavior and overlook the wreckage. This bullying paradigm has parents, teachers and coaches believing they must be tough to the point of emotional abuse in order for children to acquire the grit and resilience needed to attain excellence in a competitive world. Setting high expectations in an atmosphere of safety, trust and empathy is light years away from using threats, humiliation and cruelty if the goal is high achievement. Neuroscientists have found visual evidence in brain scans of the damage that occurs when subjected to bullying and abuse. The bullied brain correlates with failure to perform, substance abuse, aggressive behavior, chronic disease and mental illness. Dr. Fraser shares not only how to survive bullying, but how to push back against the entrenched role it plays in society.

This weeks show is a conversation about the detrimental effects of Bullying on the brain. Dr. Claudia is joined by Dr. Jennifer Fraser, best selling author and educator to discuss her new book ‘The Bullied Brain, Heal Your Scars and Restore your Health.
Jennifer Fraser is the founder of The Bullied Brain. She's an award-winning teacher, best-selling author, and unlikely whistle-blower. And key in mental health awareness. Her new book The Bullied Brain: Heal Your Scars and Restore Your Health tells the story of her journey to repair after battling to protect students from teacher abuse and failing. With a PhD in Comparative Literature, she believed that there must be research that could help her recover. That's when she discovered what scientists know about the amazing powers, we have within to repair our hurt brains. And to contribute to suicide prevention. Some key points from our interview: · How she feels that we are never unbroken as our brains are never unbreakable· How she discovered her son was a victim of bullying and abuse, including emotional abuse from teachers at his school when she took the testimonies of 8 other students who had also been bullied· How she discovered that the school had known about this for a year and failed to protect their students· How she decided to do the research into the neuroscience of being bullied and wrote her book to show the impact of bullying on the brain but also how it can be healed too· How her own trauma of being emotionally, physically, and sexually abused by 3 teachers was triggered by her son's trauma· How she went to the police to report her own abuse to stop covering up and to honour a student “Ellen” who tragically died by suicide after being abused by a head teacher that was covered up by the school· How we all have the power to convert our mind bully to our own empathic coach in order to rewire our brain"Unbroken: Healing Through Storytelling" features individuals who have all triumphed after adversity and have not just bounced back in life, but forward and are now making a difference for others.Hosted by Madeleine Black, the show will share stories of all the amazing people Madeleine has met on her own journey as an author/speaker and these stories will heal, motivate, inspire and bring hope when they share their wisdom and knowledge with her.She really believes in the power that comes when we share our stories, that in fact we are not story tellers but story healers. Tune in to discover what helped them to stay unbroken and together we will discover that none of us are broken beyond repair. You can find out more about Madeleine, her story and her memoir, Unbroken, from her website: https://madeleineblack.co.uk/You can listen to the full extended series of incredible stories on https://podfollow.com/unbroken-healing-through-storytelling
Jennifer had dissociated with the person she was as a teenager who was physically, emotionally and sexually abused by three teachers. She had put this away in a box and not integrated it so it started to operate as a mind bully. She was a high achiever in the academic world but when she came home behind closed doors she bullied herself through cutting and eating disorders. She was hurting her own body because she had no idea she had to take teenage girl and her trauma and work through it. She was seeing psychiatrists and psychologists and never told them anything about it. She could have worked as a teacher and repeated what had happened to her with her students. Her personality type, introverted, academic and full of self-expectation meant instead she turned it against herself. That is the mind bully. Many people are holding themselves back from happiness, health and fulfilling their potential because of their mind bully. It takes work on separate it out. You need to become aware that its not you, that its something you created that helps you avoid looking at the trauma. If it's your own problem and the mind bully is your own issue you don't have to take a hard look at what happened to you. You don't have to be the victim, to be vulnerable, to feel what it was like to be a teenager and be treated that way. It's easier to keep the mind bully beating you up because you don't have to be a victim again. If you find the courage, a good mental health practioner, and a safe network and space to do it, you can go back into the arena again and choose to replace the mind bully.

JENNIFER FRASER, PHD'S NEW BOOK IS TITLED THE BULLIED BRAIN GARTH THOMASJUNE 10, 2022 BOOKS & MAGAZINESNEWSREVIEWS Jennifer Fraser, PhD's new book is titled The Bullied Brain: Heal Your Scars and Restore Your Health. Like any good piece of nonfiction, the title encapsulates the entirety of the read's topicality – much like a position paper. “Neuroscientists study the way in which pain is designed to alert you to harm being done to both brain and body. Pain circuits in your brain get activated by a broken bone, but they also activate if you're excluded from a social gathering or a meeting at work,” Fraser writes. “…The epidemic of abuse, neglect, and trauma has led to an epidemic of hurt brains. Abuse creates a cycle whereby the abuse victim's damaged brain becomes abusive either to self or others. In the past, we could excuse normalizing this cycle of brain damage because we could not see the harm done to the brain by abuse. However, now that we can see the neurological scars on the brain with technological innovation, it's time to act. It's time to heal and restore our health. Every single individual who heals the trauma to their brain has a lower chance of suffering life-threatening health consequences—and has a lower chance of infecting and harming others.” It's through this kind of plainspoken, appropriate bedside manner Fraser is able to make the articulations, unpacking, and arguments feel as viscerally cutting-edge as they are intellectually stimulating and enlightening. You never feel there is any beating around the bush here. Dr. Fraser is clearly passionate about the material as well, personally as well as professionally. In the book's introduction, she writes a painfully revealing passage about her thoughts regarding the topicality's relevance to her son. The fact she's willing to put something as precious as that on the line immediately makes you feel a sense of trust in her as a reader, rather than something used as a parlor trick making up for gaps in logic. Everything here is meticulously presented and covered, the added emotional whallup only driving home the former with an increased sense of urgency.
Jennifer Fraser, PhD, set out to learn all she could about bullying and healing a brain damaged by it. She was motivated by the experience her teenage son endured, and the memories of her one teen years that his experience brought back to her.The result is a book that surveys brain research in this area, outdated myths, and societal trends. Equally important, Jennifer shares hopeful and practical ideas that can help individuals heal themselves. Why do we say we have zero tolerance for bullying, but adult society is rife with it and it is an epidemic among children? Because the injuries that all forms of bullying and abuse do to brains are invisible. We ignore them, fail to heal them, and they become cyclical and systemic. Bullying and abuse are at the source of much misery in our lives. Because we are not taught about our brains, let alone how much they are impacted by bullying and abuse, we do not have a way to avoid this misery, heal our scars, or restore our health. In The Bullied Brain readers learn about the evidence doctors, psychiatrists, neuropsychologists and neuroscientists have gathered, that shows the harm done by bullying and abuse to your brain, and how you can be empowered to protect yourself and all others. Not only is it critically important to discover how much your mental health is contingent on what has sculpted and shaped the world inside your head, it is also the first step in learning ways to recover. While your brain is vulnerable to bullying and abuse, it is at the same time remarkably adept at repairing all kinds of traumas and injuries. The first part of The Bullied Brain outlines what the research shows bullying and abuse do to your brain. The second part of the book, "The Stronger Brain" provides case studies of adults and children who have undergone focused training to heal their neurological scars and restore their health. These accessible and practical lessons can be integrated into your life. Strengthening your brain acts as an effective antidote to the bullying and abuse that are rampant in society. Foreword by Dr. Michael Merzenich, "the father of neuroplasticity," and he also contributes his knowledge, insights, and research in The Bullied Brain to help show you how to empower your brain to fulfill its power and potential.

Why do we say we have zero tolerance for bullying, but adult society is rife with it and it is an epidemic among children? Because the injuries that all forms of bullying and abuse do to brains are invisible. We ignore them, fail to heal them, and they become cyclical and systemic. In today's guest, Jennifer Fraser's book The Bullied Brain, readers learn about the evidence doctors, psychiatrists, neuropsychologists and neuroscientists have gathered, that shows the harm done by bullying and abuse to your brain, and how you can be empowered to protect yourself and all others. Jennifer Fraser earned her PhD from University of Toronto in Comparative Literature. Her first book Rite of Passage in the Narratives of Dante and Joyce explores the way in which individuals transform from readers to writers of culture. Her second book Be A Good Soldier: Children's Grief in Modernist English Novels looks at pedagogical beliefs about children and the ways in which they fuel aggression and war. She has written three plays that focus on contemporary suffering: Distortion, Aristotle's Poetics, and Wakeful Sleeper. They're with the Playwright's Guild of Canada. She also writes thrillers. For fun, check out Crush (a wine thriller) and Royal Dispatch which is about Queen Elizabeth II's dangerous trip to Canada in the 1950s (yes, it's fiction).
I had a wonderful conversation with Dr. Jennifer Fraser, an author, educator, and consultant studying brain health and brain power. She is a wonderful resource for victims of abusive coaching, and works to change the way coaches interact with their athletes. She is currently writing two new books: “10 Fixes for the Bullied Brain” and “Brain Drain: The Loss of Adolescent Brain Power in the Workplace”. Jennifer was an integral part of my healing process after experiencing two different counts of abusive coaching, and I loved reconnecting with her for this episode. She also provides excellent resources on adolescent brain health and how the brain responds to entering the workforce. This episode covers a multitude of information regarding the brain and how to heal it. You can learn more about the wonderful work she does here.
