In 2010, David was diagnosed with a rare tumor growing into his spinal cord in his neck. Following removal of the tumor, he built himself back from scratch, literally teaching himself how to walk again.  Remarkably less than two years later, he won a gold medal in the London 2012 Paralympics in the mixed Cox four. He then switched sports and joined the British paracycling team with aspirations to go to the Rio Paralympics in 2016. Sadly, he never made it there because a few months prior to competition, he was told that his tumor had returned.  Now, six years on from that, and he has had in total six surgeries to remove the tumor with each further surgery, bringing new life-changing challenges.  Following his most recent surgery in 2017, he became paralysed on one side of his body and now lives his life with a spinal cord injury. Despite this, David continues to defy the odds and is still passionate about sports choosing to spend his time cycling up crazy high mountains. I'm continuously inspired by David's story and I loved this conversation where we got deep and philosophical entering a discussion around ‘what is my why', the importance of personal values, where David found his resilience and so much more.

Disability – under represented and mis represented. I feared that people would not see past the disability and see the value that lay within me. My family did not let me take it easy – this really helped me in understanding and appreciating where my limits were. In adversity we always have a choice – give up or get up! The ‘mental side' runs pretty much through everything. Sport provides and distraction from the pain and with the adrenalin rush it becomes more removed. The mind is so important and if you get that right  - everything else will follow Your physical limits are so further on than you often think Not very good to GB team in 3 years Really listening to coaches helped. Bounce ideas off them really helped me mature as a person My real strength was the mental side – dealing with pressure ‘I would really recommend that people invest in themselves – their personal development” I have literally ‘copied and pasted [the skills, attributes and behaviours] what I use in sport ” “Sport has been one of my greatest teachers – it has taught me about myself. I have learnt what I am good at and where my strengths are, as well as the areas for challenge and areas to improve on” Cut and paste – confidence, self-belief, resilience, goal setting Ask/consider these questions: Who you are? Why doing what you are doing? Where do you want to go and what you do you want to achieve? How are you going to get there and by when? I built my confidence by people believing in me and re defining my measure of success and focussing on the tiny wins/successes not the big gold medal winning acheivements I got to where I got in sport because people helped me. Keen on working with girls and women – specific challenges with great ‘potential'. I see that the barriers and limitations we often face stem from childhood. My mum said – “we will support you all the way but you have to put in 100% commitment” You make your choice – you can't just drop out a couple of months down the line. Taking a hard performance angle and softening it round the edges to engage with people.   Quick fire questions: The books that you would recommend are? . . . and Death Came Third!: The Definitive Guide to Networking and Speaking in Public by Andy Lopata and Peter Roper Be Your Best Self: Life Skills For Unstoppable Kids by Danielle Brown and Nathan Kai Run Like A Girl: 50 Extraordinary and Inspiring Sportswomen by Danielle Brown Butterfly: From Refugee to Olympian, My Story of Rescue, Hope and Triumph by Yusra Mardini   In one sentence – What advice would you give to your teenage version of yourself? Investing and innovating in yourself.  Really working on those ‘soft skills' as they are critical for success. Find yourself and understand who you are. Become as confident as you can be. Danielle in her own words…   “I've always had big dreams for my future. Even though I didn't always have a clear idea of what that success would look like, I knew that whatever vocation I eventually settled into I was going to be good at it. Failure was not an option.   My plans came crashing to a halt when I was struck down with a disability as a teenager that severely effected my mobility. I was diagnosed with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, a rare and very painful condition in my feet. At a stage in your life when you're figuring out who you are and what you want to do with your life, this was a challenging but I came to realise that whilst you can't control what happens to you, you can control your response to it.   Determined to live life on my terms, I looked around for a sport that didn't involve lots of running around or walking and took up archery on my 15th birthday. This was the first step on a journey that saw me rise to Paralympic glory, dominating my field for over eight years. During this time, I also proved doctors wrong by successfully juggling a law degree and achieving first class honours.   Three years after taking up the sport, I stepped straight into the international circuit as World Number 1 and had soon accumulated a number of titles, including that of Paralympic Champion in Beijing 2008. Always striving to improve, I transitioned onto the able-bodied team. In 2010 I became the first Para athlete to represent England in an able-bodied discipline where I won the gold medal in the team event. London 2012 was the tournament I was most excited about and I worked incredibly hard, committed to retain my Paralympic title in such a prestigious setting. The proudest moment of my life was receiving my gold medal in front of that home crowd at London. The support of the entire country was overwhelming, but it was also the first time that my family and friends had ever seen me compete internationally and this made standing on the podium a very special moment.   Archery was such a big part of my life and I was fully committed to making the team for Rio and trying for my third gold medal, but life has a way of throwing up setbacks when you least expect it. In 2013 I learned that I had failed to classify under the new rules and that I could no longer compete at Paralympic events. I started archery because I was fed up of all the limitations imposed on my life and archery helped a disillusioned teenager come to terms with having a disability. In one moment everything I had worked so hard for was gone, just because I didn’t tick a box.    I wanted to discover what it took to be the best in the world, and I got there because I always believed I would. Now I am moving onto other exciting projects and challenges, where I am determined to be as much of a success as I have been in my sport. This time I get to help others achieve their ambitions and goals through my work as a speaker, trainer and coach.”   Listen to Danielle as she shares more on the Tough Girl Podcast.   Show notes Who is Danielle? Welcome to Season 2 of On Side. Today’s episode features 2008 and 2012 Paralympic cycling gold medallist Michael Gallagher. Prior to the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games, Gallagher tested positive for recombinant erythropoietin (rEPO) at a training camp in Italy. Still under sanction, Gallagher talks about the biggest impact his sanction had on him and what drove him to “cross a dark line”. “It [sanction] is still something I think about regularly,” Gallagher says. “I took a long time to recover from it… [and did] a lot of self-reflecting.” Gallagher is now a member of ASADA’s Athlete Advisory Group (AAG), which comprises a number of current and former athletes, including athletes who have lost medals to drug cheats. “Sports a passionate thing, and people have the right to feel strongly about certain people’s decisions, but I think my story, and people meeting me in person, probably makes doping seem a lot less black and white,” he says. “That you can be a good person, an honest person, but head down the wrong way.” Our athlete services officer Di Tucknott also answers a question about logging your whereabouts, along with our sports operations manager Steve Northey delivering a 'fast fact' about anti-doping tests conducted last financial year.
