Drew Ginn is a five-time world rowing champion, four-time Olympian, triple Olympic champion (and silver medallist in one of the greatest Men's Coxless Four Finals in history); member of Australia's original Oarsome Foursome, and recipient of the rowing's Thomas Keller Medal; as well as an inductee into Sport Australia's Hall of Fame. Beyond the medals, the statistics, the awards and the plaudits, Drew is, quite simply, a legend of the sport of rowing, described by triple Olympic champion Andrew Triggs-Hodge as Australia's equivalent of Sir Steve Redgrave. This episode of Broken Oars Podcast was a long time in the making (over a year). But we think you'll find, like us, that it was worth the wait. We sat down with an icon and ended up talking to one of the most passionate, knowledgeable, approachable and creative people we've ever met. Drew's desire to learn, share and engage, alongside his curiosity and passion, simply burns through every moment of this episode. Alexander the Great wept because he had no more worlds to conquer. The key to being more inclusive is to listen. If you’re not sure whether your venue, activity, sport or event is accessible to people with disability - ask the people directly affected, and be prepared to act on what they tell you. We sometimes think of accessibility in terms of big-ticket items like building upgrades, but it could be as simple as an attitude change and a welcoming smile. If you’re part of a sports group and wondering whether you could be more inclusive, there are tools available to help. Sport Australia's inclusive sport framework can help you assess your current accessibility, and plan your next steps. In this episode we catch up with Sport Australia’s Nick Abroms to find out more about the inclusive sport framework. We also meet Paralympian Ella Sabljak. She’s part of Paralympic Australia’s Athlete Commission, making sure the voices of athletes with disability are front and centre of every conversation and every decision that affects them. The dearth of women in leadership and in high performance coaching roles is still a problem in sport. In latest episode of On Side we talk to former Sport Australia CEO Kate Palmer on the gulf in parity that still exists in high performance sport and what needs to be done to help women transition into these roles. Palmer says sports need to take a “proactive approach” to, not just equality, but diversity in general. “The reality is that sport is not immune to society,” Palmer says. “Sport reflects all that’s great about society, and all of the things that are bad about society. “Sport can play a role [in promoting women and diversity] because on the whole it’s very public so we can show best practice to other industries and other organisations.” She says thinking about diversity more broadly is really important. “I think acknowledging the differences and including everyone in the decision making is really important, and that goes beyond gender, that goes into multi-cultural areas too, indigenous areas, to disability, everyone, putting a voice around the table for all.” We also talk to Commonwealth Games gold medallist Cara Honeychurch, who has a unique perspective as both an athlete and an administrator. “I have to say I had a very positive experience throughout my whole life, I’ve never really felt that being a women has held me back,” Honeychurch, one of Australia’s most successful ten pin bowlers, says. “My sport of tenpin bowling has always been very inclusive, and very welcoming of women.” Honeychurch, who is now General Manager of Corporate Services at Athletics Australia, says she is “very aware” her experience is “very much the exception” rather than the norm. And in our segment From the Highlight Reel, we re-live the 400m freestyle event at the Athens Olympic Games through the lens of Ian Thorpe’s coach – Tracey Menzies. Menzies says she faced criticism for having a coaching philosophy that differed from her (mostly male) peers. “Sometimes there has been a bit of a criticism that I’ve shown too much empathy for people and compassion but I sort of wear that as a badge of honour now, that I actually have that vulnerability that I’m prepared to show who I am and care for the athlete,” she says. “Having the capacity to hear what we say, and to understand, if we do things a little differently, that’s ok. Not everyone has to coach the same way, behave the same way, and different is actually good.” In the segment From Left Field our athlete educator Annabelle Cleary answers the question, “Do coaches get in trouble if an athlete tests positive?” See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Emma recently released her autobiography “Hard Wired Life, Death and Triathlon”. It's a book that I recommend for the bookshelf of every endurance sports enthusiast, and particularly every triathlon lover. Growing up as a triathlete in the 90s Emma Carney was certainly a name and a presence gracing the covers of triathlon magazines, TV screens wherever the triathlon enthusiast looked. Emma came from a junior running / athletics background, where she represented Australia twice at the world cross country championships in 1994 and 1995, and then again in the Ekiden Relay in 1993 and 1994. You'll hear today how Emma turned to the sport of triathlon and in just 18 months took out the 1994 world ITU international triathlon union championship in Auckland by a record margin at that stage of 2 minutes and 12 seconds. Following that very impressive international debut taking out a world title, Emma recorded seven ITU World Cup wins in 1996 and collectively across her career 19 World Cup wins. From June 1995 to April 1997, Emma recorded an unbroken string of 12 straight ITU World Cup wins. Emma was the World Cup champion in 1995, 1996 and 1997. And of course the ITU now World Triathlon world champion in 1994 and then again in 1997. Subsequently, Emma was inducted into the Australian sporting Hall of Fame in 2016. On this featured performer episode, you'll hear Emma truly share around the highs, the lows and the learnings from what was a remarkable career and a remarkable chapter in Australian triathlon and World Triathlon history. Emma shares on the early days her rules of competition training philosophies, and now as her attention turns to coaching up and coming triathlon talent, her ambitions to see Australia secure Olympic Gold with her podium project and the burning reason behind that. You'll hear me touch on the controversial 2000 Olympic triathlon Australia team selection snub of which you'll also be able to read the full documented history in hardwired life death and travel and Emma's recently released autobiography. This really is an episode that epitomizes the highs lows and learnings. Their mission is to ensure women and girls in sport are afforded equal opportunity regardless of sport while representing their members and bringing stakeholders together. Australia has recently led the way for equal pay as its elite athletes in cricket and soccer have shown how women can and should be treated not just on national teams but at all levels of sport. We discuss the main achievements of the organization as it approaches its 16th anniversary and what’s in store for them in this new decade. AIS Chief Medical Officer Dr David Hughes talks about the issues of inclusion in sport following the release of the Guidelines for the inclusion of transgender and gender diverse people in sport in June. Sport Australia, in consultation with the Australian Human Rights Commission (HRC) and the Coalition of Major Professional and Participation Sports, whose members include the AFL, Tennis Australia, Rugby Australia, Netball Australia and Cricket Australia, established guidelines for the nation to promote more inclusive practices for transgender and gender diverse people in sport. Dr Hughes says transgender and gender diversity is not a sport issue, it’s a societal issue. “It’s important that sport at all time reflects societal changes, and moves with societal changes,” Dr Hughes says. “Transgender individuals have for many years been on the margins of society and not accepted in the main stream and I think sport has an important role here by promoting diverse gender inclusion to ensure that every Australian fulfils their right to have their life enriched by sport.” The guidelines include information, case studies and steps to ensure an inclusive sporting environment. He says the document is targeted at the grassroots and has relevance for elite sports, but “I don’t think its purpose is to try and sort out the complex issues that specifically apply to high performance sport where there are issues between getting the balance right between fairness and inclusion”. “Everyone has the right to compete and enjoy the benefits sport offers but at the highest levels of sport, fairness is critical,” he says. “At the grassroots, we should err on the side of inclusion.” Produced by Lyndall Larkham & Tim Gavel Recorded, edited & mixed by Ryan Micallef
