It's June, so that means it's time for the AIPT Movies podcast's “Junesis” series! Where we cover movies based on/revolving around video games! In this week's episode, Alex, Tim, and Matt are joined by comic book artist/writer Tony Sedani (Return to Rander, Skin Deep), to discuss Paul W.S. Anderson's first journey into the world of video game adaptations, 1995's Mortal Kombat!Endearingly dated VFX! A lovably awkward-looking four-armed monster man with back problems! A delicious turkey dinner being heartlessly discarded! Surprisingly faithful character designs! An unexplained cybernetic eye! More high kicks than you can count! A committed cast that includes Robin Shou, Bridgette Wilson, Linden Ashby, Trevor Goddard, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, and a wonderfully-miscast Christopher Lambert! An iconic EDM soundtrack that not only influenced future Mortal Kombat games, but possibly also The Matrix and 1998's Blade! An enjoyably sincere and campy movie with vibrant colors and impressive sets that looks shockingly expensive by modern standards, which despite its watered down gore, may also be one of the most faithful and successful video game adaptations of all time!In addition, everyone shares their spoiler-free thoughts on Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, while Tony talks about In A Violent Nature, and Alex discusses the remarkably bizarre 1999 rom-com, Never Been Kissed! You can find AIPT Movies on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. As always, if you enjoy the podcast, be sure to leave us a positive rating, subscribe to the show, and tell your friends! The AIPT Movies podcast brings you the latest in movie news, reviews, and more! Hosted by supposed “industry vets,” Alex Harris, Tim Gardiner, and Matt Paul, the show gives you a peek behind the scenes from three filmmakers with oddly nonexistent filmographies. You can find Alex on Instagram and Twitter @ActionHarris. Matt is a terrific artist that you can find on Instagram @no_wheres_ville. Tim can't be found on social media because he doesn't exist. Fatal Termination (also known as Death Blow, original title Chi se da feng bao) is a 1990 Hong Kong action film starring Moon Lee and Robin Shou. A Hong Kong cop's wife seeks revenge after the abduction of her daughter by a ruthless munitions dealer.
IT HAS BEGUN! And just like that, it has ended. This is it, folks! The Season 3 Finale is here... it's time to... FINISH IT! In case you hadn't picked up on it, or in case you were not aware of the greatest fighting game of the late 20th Century and it's infinitely mimicable sound bites, today's film on The CineMEH Podcast is 1995's immortal... Mortal Kombat! Based on the video game that was based on "kung fu" movies of yesteryear that borrows the exact plot beats of those movies that would go on to inform the video game... look, I'll stop babbling, it's a derivative movie, okay?! Josh and Ryan talk what makes Mortal Kombat a surprisingly competent film, what it's obvious shortfalls are, how the cast really make the movie, and why this film's soundtrack helped propell it into the pop culture stratosphere. And while the discussion here isn't exactly PG13, for those who are faint of heart, rest assured there are no fatality descriptions in this episode. Cause... cause this movie didn't have them. In what our critics are calling a 'flawless victory' of a finale, Josh and Ryan are proud to bring you the final episode of The CineMEH Podcast's third season! See you next year, folks! Mortal Kombat was released in 1995 and stars Christopher Lambert, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, Robin Shou, Bridgette Sampras and Linden Ashby. Appropriately so, the winner of a long-standing tournament is Mortal Kombat: Annihilation and because the people have spoken, that is what the guys opted to discuss on this week's episode. They talk about the movie killing off the most popular character from the first film in the opening scene, the worst CGI for a wide release maybe ever, the characters that are discussed as already having been killed off-screen, Jax cracking wise every 15 seconds and much more. Next week: We continue with the tournament by discussing one of the semi-finalists. What We've Been Watching: Moonrise Kingdom IWA vs. GCW: UnFnSanctioned Questions? Comments? Suggestions? Mortal Kombat: Annihilation is a 1997 American martial arts fantasy film directed by John R. Leonetti in his directorial debut from a screenplay by Brent V. Friedman and Bryce Zabel. Based on the Mortal Kombat video game franchise, it is the second installment in the Mortal Kombat film series and a sequel to the original 1995 film, of which Leonetti served as the cinematographer. Largely an adaptation of the video game Mortal Kombat 3 (1995), Annihilation follows Liu Kang and his allies as they attempt to stop the malevolent Shao Kahn from conquering Earthrealm. It stars Robin Shou as Liu, Talisa Soto as Kitana, James Remar as Rayden, Sandra Hess as Sonya Blade, Lynn Red Williams as Jax, and Brian Thompson as Kahn. Only Shou and Soto reprise their roles, with the rest of the characters recast from the previous film. Released to theaters on November 21, 1997, Annihilation received largely negative reviews for its story, characters, and special effects. It was also a commercial failure, grossing $51 million against a $30 million budget. Due to the film's poor critical and commercial response, a direct sequel was cancelled. A third Mortal Kombat film languished in development hell for nearly two decades until the series was rebooted by a 2021 installment. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/doseofnerdacumen/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/doseofnerdacumen/support
It has BEGUN! Emmy and Link welcome Trevor from the Catching up on Cinema podcast to talk (for a very long time) about the 1995 film "Mortal Kombat." All of your favorite characters are here. Johnny gets a few great lines, Sonya... falls down while trying to throw a kick, and Lu Kang is the most special boy. Trevor, Link, and Emmy will discuss all of their amazing battles against Kano (chump), Sub-Zero, and Scorpion who really just should have been using a regular spear. Also the Goro animatronic is impressive, but is he wet enough? Mortal Kombat was regarded as one of the most faithful adaptations of a video game when it was released, but how does it hold up? In the course of breaking down the movie, the trio talk about the filmography of Paul WS Anderson, speculate how last-minute casting resulted in a few issues for some of the fight scenes, wonder what it must be like to be beaten up by two different Lu Kangs, and ask "Why didn't Robin Shou have more of a career?" We can't thank Trevor enough for joining us and sharing his knowledge of all things cinema with us for this episode. You can listen to more of him, and his co-host Kyle, on the Catching up on Cinema podcast which you can find on all of the podcast apps. You can also follow them on Twitter @CatchingCinema.

On this week's show, we're somersaulting all over the place for 1997's Mortal Kombat: Annihilation! How come half the cast of the original didn't show up for second helpings? Why does everything look so plastic? Is this the worst movie we've done on the show so far? All this, plus we remember Night Trap on the Sega CD and Rodey does the whole episode from his bed! This week the Bloody Good Film Podcast goes where few podcasts have gone before... We wasted our free time so you don't have to, and watched quite possibly the two worst video game movies of all time. We continue through these franchises and break down two sequels and discuss both Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li and Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. Is Chris Klein the worst actor of all time? Is it possible to be Irish, raised in another country, never be around Irish people ever in your life, and still have an Irish accent? Is there a guy from the Black Eyed Peas playing Vega? We answer all these questions and try to figure out exactly what went wrong with this "Street Fighter" film. I doubt there is any movie podcast that could enjoy Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. If there is, you should really take a second to think whether or not you can trust their opinions. No Lambert, no Tagawa, no Bridgette Wilson? This movie never had a chance. We discuss everything from Raiden's new haircut to the awful CGI animality attempts. Most importantly we give you the answer to our weekly question...Are Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li and Mortal Kombat: Annihilation bloody good films? We encourage everyone to watch along while you listen and make sure to comment and let us know what you think. When Earth realm is in danger of interdimensional invasion three bumbling heroes and their French born Chinese god of lightning and thunder will rise in engaging Mortal Kombat. The new Mortal Kombat is finally out! No, not the new movie from Warner Bros! Our new episode of The OST about Paul WS Anderson's seminal 1995 martial arts master class in cinema. That's right, after almost 8 MONTHS, we're back with A Very Special episode. Let it be known: we recorded these episodes way back in August 2020 with the intention of releasing them immediately in celebration of the film's 25th anniversary. For some reason it just never happened, but as it turns out who cares? Just keep that in mind! In celebration of the new movie, we're finally releasing them to no acclaim. There is a ton of talk about things that have either occurred by now, or are currently happening. We hope you enjoy, and as the great Shang Tsung says: "Treasure these moments." (Producer's note: There is a short reference to Elliot Page. We recorded these episodes before he came out as trans. We support all trans people, and mean no offense to Elliot by using his dead name.)
::Insert Mortal Kombat Scream Here::Adults everywhere were pissed that a popular video game was full of so much violence that people decided to make a movie about it and we're all grateful. Mortal Kombat (1995) is a shlocky action film with some terrible dialogue that actually has some decent fight sequences. Sure it feels like it should be a SyFy original movie called "Demon Fight Saga Tournament" or something stupid but we love it anyway. And the soundtrack? I don't want to live in a world without it. We pair it with a 2014 The Immortal Zin. The label looks semi-homemade but the wine is good.Movie Sync Notes: We watch the movie on Amazon Prime. We start "Mortal Kombat" 5:39 into the pod, and push play on part two 58:17 into the pod.
Mortal Kombat (1995)Welcome to The Guys Review, where we review media, products and experiences. **READ APPLE REVIEWS** mention listener in Cour D'Alene, IDMortal KombatDirected by Paul W. S. The younger boy is defeated, and we see it's Liu Kangs dream. Next we're on a raid of some sort, with Sonya and Jax looking for Kano. Kano is working with Shang Sung to get Sonya on a boat. Next, we flash to LA and a Johnny Cage facing 4 guys in, what we learn, is a movie. His mentor convinces him to participate in a tournament, and is then shown to be Shang Sung in disguise. Liu Kang returns to the temple of light. He argues with his grandfather, and wants to represent the temple in the tournament. Enter Raiden. The fighters are shown waiting on the dock when a mystical boat appears. Sonya sees Kano board the boat and follows him. The main characters are introduced to each other. Sonya, searching for Kano finds Shang Sung, and are introduced to Scorpion and Subzero. Raiden stops them from fighting. Raiden then explains to them what Mortal Kombat is, and that if Shang Sung wins, the Outworld warriors will invade Earth. Shang Sung declares the tournament has begun.S:-I love that the movie just starts with the techno theme. Super 90's.-The dialoge is a bit... Eh-Eye electricity-Boat CGI isn't that bad.-Why 10 victories to be able to invade? The fighters arrive to the island, where they're shown climbing impossibly tall stairs. Liu Kang eyes Kitana, and we see the very poorly cgi'd reptile is sent to follow them. The fighters are at a banquet, that is disrupted by Shang Sung, and we're shown what Subzero can do, when he freezes and explodes a fighter. Flawless victory. Liu Kang, Sonya and Johnny Cage follow Shang Sung, who leads them to Kano an our first proper view of Goro. He gives some exposition on who Shang Sung is, and who he is. The three are heard trying to leave, and Shang Sung sends men after them. Liu Kang has an encounter with Reptile. Johnny leads them in a circle back to the hall where Kano was, and 6 guys attack them. After, Raiden saves them from a large group of attackers. Raiden gives some exposition on Shang Sung, and the tournament begins with Liu Kang fighting a dude, who he defeats, and Shang Sung takes his soul with a fatality. Next is a supposedly long awaited fight between Sonya and Kano. Sonya ends up killing Kano with her signature move from the game. Next, Johnny Cage is walking through a forest, and he encounters Scorpion, Scorpion sends his hand/hook thing at Johnny, which he evades, and when he tries to reel it in, Johnny goes after him, and they end up in Scorpions lair where the intense fight continues. Scorpion does his signature fatality from the game, which Johnny repels with a shield, which he then uses to kill Scorpion...and ends with a signed photo of him.S:-Johnny Cages one liners, "cant wait to see what the bathrooms look like"-Again, like Double Dragon, you can tell who has martial arts training.-The floor in the room where Kano was, you can see the squares that makes up the floor.-What's with all the pageantry before the fight?-The guy who plays Kano is SO much bigger than Sonya, those haymakers would have taken her out.-Johnny Scorpion fight was well choreographed.-Ed Boone, creator of Mortal Kombat, voiced Scorpion. Liu Kang is to fight Kitana on a beach. As they fight, she gives him advice for life and his next fight. In the main hall, Raiden is shown to bringing in buckets of water as Liu Kang enters, and SubZero comes down the stairs, their fight begins. SubZero powers up some sort of ice attack, and Liu Kang realizes he can use the water to stop the attack, which impales Sub Zero and freezes him. Goro is shown to enter the tournament and destroy all the humans with ease. We're shown a fight where Goro kills an unnamed fighter Johnny had made a connection with earlier on. Goro kills him with a flawless victory, Shang Sung then takes his soul. Raiden gives a pep talk. Telling them they'll have to face their fears. Liu meditates, Johnny and Sonya talk and Johnny is going to fight Goro to protect Sonya. Raiden tries to stop him, but he makes the deal with Shang Sung. Goro and Johnny meet to fight, Johnny does his move from the game, does the splits, and punches him in the crotch. Johnny runs off and Goro chases him, to a clif. Johnny hides above the entrance and surprises him, and knocks him off the cliff to his death. Shang Sung kidnaps Sonya to Outworld for the final fight. As they walk through Outworld, Liu catches Reptile, and throws him into a stature, which he then becomes a human-like fighter, and the two fight. Liu ends the fight by doing his video game move, the bicycle kick to Reptile, who turns back into the stature and as the reptile creature tries to escape, he kills it. Kitana then tells them what happened to Outworld. She tells him he'll face 3 challenges in the black tower, where Sonya is shown being held.S:-The Goro animatronics are so bad. The top hands and head are terrible.-That Veronica Vaughn...-Cary Tagawa is pretty good in this.-The Goro yells are annoying.Shang Sung and Sonya exchange dialog, and Johnny Cage, Liu Kang, and Kitana are there beside them. Shang Sung challenges Johnny Cage, but Liu then challenges him. As the mortal kombat theme begins, so does their fight. Liu lands a good punch, and uses the souls of a thousand dead warriors and brings in extra fighters. Liu defeats all of them. As he goes to challenge Shang Sung, he morphs into his younger brother Chan, and tries to convince him to give in, as spikes are raised on the ground below (like the stage "The Pit" from the first MK game)... He switches back and they continue to fight. Shang Sung thinks hes won, but Liu realizes his power and begins to make him free the souls. He tries to make him surrender, which he wont. Liu beats him back to the edge and finishes him with a fireball to the chest, and onto a spike. The turns in a shriveled skeleton, and explodes with light and the souls are released. Liu makes peace with his brothers soul. They're shown back at the temple on Earth and everyone is celebrating. Raiden is waiting for them. As they walk, the emperor is shown to be attacking, saying hes come for their souls, and Raiden responds with, "I don't think so." Cue fighting pose and MK theme music.S:-I like that they changed Sonyas outfit and blew out her hair too. Gotta be pretty as a slave/fighter.-This was obviously a VERY well rehearsed fight.-I've never understood why everyone waits to take their turn to fight like that...-LOVE the end song. The only thing worse than a bad movie is a boring movie, and this is a boring as hell movie. There is no true cohesiveness to this movie, the characters who are on the same team don't talk until the last fifteen minutes of the movie, but it turns out that they have always been in connection, but the scenes showing that connection was deleted. The male lead is a horrible actor, Moon Bloodgood is just a pretty face, Kristen Kreuk is awful, and Robin Shou is probably the best thing in this movie which is the equivalency of finding shit in a quarter.

Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li somehow manages to be the worst big screen adaptation of the franchise. The 1994 film starring Jean-Claude Van Damme wasn't a huge hit and was most certainly not critically beloved. Thus, Chun-Li had a low bar to clear, but it still could not do it. It made less money—$12.8 million vs $99.4 million—and couldn't even cross the 10% threshold critics set for 94's. It sits at just 5% on Rotten Tomatoes with a viewer average of 18%. To quote film historian Leonard Maltin, "The 1994 movie was one of the worst films ever inspired by a video game; it should have been titled Four Hundred Funerals and No Sex. Yet this bomb makes it predecessor seem like Gone With the Wind." Yes, it is that bad. Its script is bland; its characters are underwritten; and it's a martial arts movie where the fight scenes and choreography just aren't good. For a game known for its flying fisticuffs, that's quite a predicament. Chun-Li's issues with what should be its signature moments is a little befuddling. It was directed by Andrzej Bartkowiak—who'd served as the cinematographer on several high-profile movies and had also helmed other movies in this genre. Not to say that Cradle to the Grave and Romeo Must Die are excellent or anything, but they're certainly more competent than this. In Chun-Li, the action scenes are hacked to death, quick cutting from one moment to the next. And when Chun-Li finally unleashes her iconic "Spinning Bird Kick," it's lost in the haze of a diluted camera filter. These problems are entirely attributable to the movie's casting. From Neal McDonough as an Irish M. Bison to Taboo (yes, the guy from the Black Eyed Peas) as Vega to Kristen Kreuk as the titular hero, it's sort of a nightmare. Their lack of training and martial arts acumen are far too apparent. Save for Chris Klein, who's the only person who seems to understand the kind of movie he's in, as Charlie Nash and Robin Shou as Gen, the movie would be virtually unwatchable. Robin, you deserved better. So sit back, spin-kick the cap off of a Tsingtao from Tsingtao Brewery, and polish up your Hadouken! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Capt. FIGHT!! Christian and Alejandro take on the task of defeating the behemoth, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation (1997), starring Robin Shou, Talisa Soto, Sandra Hess, James Remar, and Lynn Williams. Otis is allowed to speak up on this episode. Alejandro unknowingly ruins Johnny Cage for Christian. Alejandro finally stands up to Christian’s bigotry... Power to the people! ALL PEOPLE! Both Christian and Otis know this franchise front to back which is perfect because Alejandro doesn’t know anything about MK and still tries to recast the film. Otis has perfected reverse psychology and it pushes Alejandro over the edge. All the boys described their versions of “Fatalities”. Alejandro claims to be the smartest man in the room, and is immediately tested, and immediately fails. Then the Three Amigos get weird, like, they go straight bananas. #kissesforchristian

In this episode of Films(trips) the podcasting duo of Andrew and Dave turn their attention to Paul Thomas Anderson's PHANTOM THREAD- Wait, that's not right. No, it turns out the duo are turning their attention to Paul W.S. Anderson's 1995 film MORTAL KOMBAT, starring Robin Shou! Can the podcasting duo find something intelligent to say about one of the better video game films ever game? Not really, but the film does lead to oddball jokes, shocking revelations about the pasts of both Andrew and Dave, and mutal admiration of Cary-Hiroyuki-Tagawa's hair. Next Episode: A return to both Kubrick and intelligent conversation. All music by Andrew Kannegeisser. Editing by David. And apparently Raiden belongs to the Shinto religion. Research: it is always important!
Good morning! Join us for Episode 85, won't you? This one is a doozy... This week, we are delighted to be joined by the director of Frightfest 2019 selection Sadistic Intentions... It's Eric Pennycoff! His chosen film? Mortal Kombat: Annihilation! Considered by Mitch to be "quite possibly the worst film we have ever done", MK: A is the direct sequel to Paul W.S. Anderson's 1995 video game adaptation and, as mediocre as that film is, the sequel is a horse of a different colour. With James Remar replacing Christopher Lambert as Lord Raiden and only Robin Shou and Talisa Soto reprising their roles from the first film, cinematographer-turned-director John R. Leonetti (Annabelle, Wish Upon) steps into the directing seat for a film that is often considered one of the worst films of the 1990s. Did I mention it cost $30 million? The synopsis is as follows: Every generation, a portal opens up between the Outerworld and Earth. Emperor Shao-Kahn, ruler of the mythical Outerworld, pounces the moment the portal reopens and slips through with his mighty warriors, intent on total domination and uniting the two worlds. However, he has only seven days to complete his task. In the meantime, opposition grows and warriors Sonya Blade, Jax, Kitana and Liu Kang get ready for war. On this episode Elwood and Kim’s season long re-evaluation of Paul W.S. Anderson’s filmography moves onto his Hollywood debut with the videogame adaptation of “Mortal Kombat” which not only was the sleep over movie of choice in the 90’s but has since gone on like the games its adapted from to gain an impressive cult following. Here we look back at the film aswell as questioning why this was the breakout movie we expected for Robin Shou plus much more!!
Matt and Steve discuss another New Line 90’s movie with an amazing look, that movie is Mortal Kombat!!!! Podcast Time code: 00:00 Welcome and our experience with the Mortal Kombat game 05:02 VHS Box Art 09:44 Crew and Cast 21:56 Trailer and Movie Breakdown 47:28 Behind the Scenes & The Animated Film 59:41 What’s going in our Museum? 01:02:12 What’s Next? Cast/Crew/Notes Directed by Paul W.S. Anderson Produced by Lawrence Kasanoff Based on Mortal Kombat by Midway Games Starring Christopher Lambert as Raiden, god of thunder and protector of Earthrealm who guides the warriors on their journey. He desires to aid the heroes in defending Earthrealm, but as he himself is not mortal, he is not permitted to participate in the tournament and may only advise them and act to prevent cheating. Robin Shou as Liu Kang, a former Shaolin monk, who enters the tournament to avenge his brother's death. He is also Kitana's love interest and among the first who notice her sympathy towards Earthrealm. As in most of the games in the Mortal Kombat series, Liu Kang is the main protagonist. This was Shou's second American film, as his last American role was in 1990, for the made-for-television film Forbidden Nights. Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa as Shang Tsung, a powerful, sadistic and treacherous demon sorcerer, he is the film's main antagonist who killed Liu Kang's brother Chan. Tagawa was the filmmakers' first and only choice for the role; he was instantly selected after he came to his audition in costume, and read his lines while standing on a chair. Linden Ashby as Johnny Cage, a Hollywood superstar that enters the tournament to prove to the world that his skills are for real. He is also Sonya's love interest. Ashby trained in karate and tae kwon do especially for this film. Despite the intensity of the fight scenes coupled with the actors performing most of their own stunts, on-set injuries were surprisingly minimal; the only notable occurrence was a mildly bruised kidney Ashby suffered while shooting Cage's fight scene with Scorpion. Bridgette Wilson as Sonya Blade, an American Special Forces officer from Austin, Texas who's in hot pursuit of Kano, the criminal who killed her partner. She is also Johnny's love interest. Cameron Diaz was originally set to play Sonya, but she broke her wrist during a martial arts training session prior to shooting and was replaced by Wilson, who was jokingly nicknamed "RoboBabe" during production by director Paul W. S. Anderson. Wilson performed all her own stunts, including fight scenes. Release Date: August 18, 1995 Budget: 18 Million Box Office: 122.1 Million

We have one of action cinema's most beloved baddies on the show today: it's the one and only Stingray from the low-budget 1994 Godfrey Ho head-kicker Undefeatable, played by all-round super nice guy Don Niam. Don talks about his experience making the film which has now become a cult classic, not to mention a viral YouTube sensation. The final fight scene between Don and John Miller has been viewed over 11 million times. On this podcast, he talks about what it was like working with the film's co-star, Cynthia Rothrock, and the prolific Hong Kong exploitation filmmaker Godfrey Ho, as well as living with future Mortal Kombat star Robin Shou. He is also still trying to figure out why so many people like the film, and even stop him in the street to tell him. We discuss the highs and lows of Don's journey from teaching kung fu in Akron, Ohio, to relocating to Hollywood in a bid to make it as an actor. Don has led a colourful life and worked in numerous professions including owning a strip club and working as a bodyguard for a Saudi princess. Now 62, he lives in Las Vegas where he works as a personal trainer. He is also teaching kung fu again and working on a treatment for a new film project, so we may see Don Niam on our screens again. ver since we started doing one of these every 12 months, we’ve not only received requests to do it from you guys, but we’ve personally also enthusiastically tossed the idea of recording an episode around this film; Mortal Kombat. Join Georgie, Ser, Andrew, and Ser as we romanticize the only claim to fame Robin Shou can brag about on his IMDB page, and talk about other things too like Shokan nards, Jag, Legends of The Hidden Temple, Billy Zane and his twin, who would win in a real fight between Christopher Lambert and James Remar, and more. I know we’ve said it before (and will most likely say it again the actuall anniversary podcast), but the countless nights of editing, writing, laughing, and crying would not have been possible without you guys—I’m sincerely grateful for everyone who has supported us. The T-shirts and posters are still being made but will hit the store really soon (we’re really sorry about the wait!) I’m truly blessed to have PPR, all of us here are, and it’s all thanks to you lovable shmucks.
