Self-Regulation: Controlling Your Behaviors, Part 2. This is episode 741 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast. In the first episode on Self-Regulation, I shared some thoughts about what self-regulation means and how it appears in the classroom. (Episode 737). I use the term in referring to you the adult in the classroom keeping control of your behaviors. I also shared some thoughts about things that you can do to help keep you in control of you. Today, I am sharing a specific strategy. It sounds simple enough but at times we can get frustrated with behaviors that the kids have previously exhibited and so we always associate those behaviors with that particular kid. To overcome always affiliating the bad with those one or two students something that works really well is to post an image, drawing, or place an object in the room that you will see that is there to remind you of something that student does well, or to make you think about a calming/happy thought, or to think of some specific positive characteristic the child exhibits most times. By doing this you will help counteract any negative thoughts that you immediately go to that are associated with previous bad behavior by that student. You will see the picture, the drawing, the object and say to yourself, "Remember you put that there to be patient with this child." Does that make sense? Try it. You will discover that adopting this technique to assist with your self-regulation will be very helpful. What do you think about this? Any thoughts or questions? Reach out to me and ask. Happy to talk about helping with self-regulation. Before you go... You could help support this podcast by Buying Me A Coffee. Not really buying me something to drink but clicking on the link on my home page at https://stevenmiletto.com for Buy Me a Coffee or by going to this link Buy Me a Coffee. This would allow you to donate to help the show address the costs associated with producing the podcast from upgrading gear to the fees associated with producing the show. That would be cool. Thanks for thinking about it. Hey, I've got another favor...could you share the podcast with one of your friends, colleagues, and family members? Hmmm? What do you think? Thank you! You are AWESOME! So, the big news is I've got braces. I've got braces for the first time in probably 45 years. I can't remember exactly how old I was when I had my braces the first time, but I was very young. Why am I getting braces? Well, I'm concerned about my appearance. I have to look good for the podcast. I have to look handsome for you people and have a bright smile, and have everything in place. So that's why I'm doing this. I have some plastic surgery coming up too. Just kidding! Welcome. The biggest thing I get from this episode is adaptation. When life throws something at me that knocks me off course, like COVID, for example, or a torn Achilles tendon, I need to adapt. If I have an injury I can look at alternate modes of exercise. I can switch hands if I'm having trouble with one hand. If I can't go outside because of a pandemic, I can workout with weights or a stationary bike at home. If I'm completely unable to exercise, I can adjust my diet accordingly so I don't gain weight from idleness. This week, comedian Dobie Maxwell joins the idiots for fun and merriment. 00:00 Welcome! 00:32 A Really Smart Comment 04:07 Outrage over the movie The Fall Guy 12:50 Legal Failures 22:32 Influencers 28:49 Rob Marciano, Fired 32:15 New York Times Investigation The breakdown: —People are amusing. You can say something plainly, in their native language, it can be a simple concept, and yet they will find a way to be so dumb they miss the point (and the truth) entirely. Basically, Jake and nathan made very clear statements about the idiot college kids protesting the Israel/Palestine conflict, and someone who was either (a) not paying attention, or (b) is too partisan to see reality, took umbrage. Let's clear things up, shall we? —It's one of our favorite topics: the outrage machine! Something (anything) happens, and dumb people react on Twitter. Should they be listened to, or ignored? Ignored, right? And yet, a reporter with no real morals or values knows that clickbait is the most important thing out there, so they round up several tweets by idiots and write the article, “People are Angry!” Well, no one is really angry, and no one should care about the four people who are. As nathan states (too many times) in the video: The Fall Guy is a fun movie. Go see it. (Side note: a quick discussion is also had regarding Elon Musk buying Twitter and then giving it the worst rebrand since New Coke.) —This one is baffling. Prosecutors had slam dunk cases with both Bill Cosby & Harvey Weinstein… AND THEY BOTCHED BOTH OF THEM!! (All caps = serious business.) Come on… how do you screw up so badly that Cosby gets set free, and Harvey gets a conviction overturned. It's absurd. (Side note: discussions of Russell Simmons taking his money and fleeing the country a la Roman Polanski are had.) —Kim Kardashian promoted a “vampire facial,” where you get your face poked by a needle until you're covered in your own blood… And that's supposed to be good for you. Well, two practitioners contracted HIV, so… Good luck with that. (Side note: who knew Logan Paul was behind the energy drink, Prime? I mean, it was a horrible drink to begin with, but seriously: if you're taking advice from Kim Kardashian or Logan Paul, ya kinda deserve anything bad that happens to you.) —I didn't know who Rob Marciano was until the story hit that he'd been fired by ABC. Apparently he was a weatherman on Good Morning America, and he had a temper. A weatherman with a temper. There is just something so amusing about that. —Oh, the clickbait headline… Everyone loves it, right? Well, The NY Times had a doozy of one. The clickbait was, “Study shows side effects of COVID vaccine!!!!” Very scary, right? The outcome? .0001% of people have an adverse reaction to the vaccination. So… Yeah. “Ooooh, scary.” Idiots on Parade: we mock the news, so you don't have to. Tune in and get your giggle on. I'm at the Running: A FEVER world headquarters and about to head down to the Lake Fayetteville trail. It's cloudy, and I'm getting some drops, but do you know what? I've been wimpy about the weather for too long. I'm just going to go and fight through it. They say, 'Are you a man or a mouse?' It doesn't take a ton of courage to walk in the rain. I'm worried about my shoes that don't have a lot of mileage on them getting a little muddy or dirty, but you know what? If I use them enough, they will get that way anyway. Not that big a deal. Thomas Sowell has a reputation for unorthodox positions and intellectual chops, but does he deserve it? I don't always follow my own advice. But I do appreciate, these days, the good people and the other good things in my life. In self-defense we must always consider that an attacker is larger, faster, more skilled, and more aggressive than the defender. This week in Life Defense, and in our self-defense programs, we are studying the attack from a tackle. This attack when applied by someone who possesses these attributes can be devastating for a smaller, lighter, less skilled defender. Unless, they understand the simple principle of ALLOWING. Many of the defenses we use are counterintuitive. This is one of them. The first inclination of a defender who is untrained defending against a larger, more powerful opponent is to stop them. Meaning, blocking their pathway in the case of say a full frontal football, or wrestling style tackle. This almost inevitably goes poorly for the defender. Caught off guard, and back on their heels by a larger attacker thrusting forward intent on driving them to the ground. The counter intuitive defense that we suggest from a front tackle is to ALLOW the attackers energy to come forward, while pushing their legs back, removing the targeted legs and pressing weight on the head, neck and upper back of the attacker. This simple motion drives the attacker downward by using all of their body weight to drive the attacker face first to the ground as the motion of the tackle proceeds forward. In self-defense, and Life Defense, we call this principle ALLOWING. This counter intuitive technique ALLOWS the attacker to drive forward with all their might, all their speed, and all their weight. This utilizes their attack against themselves, typically driving their face to the ground with the defender's weight reinforcing that motion. In Life Defense, we can see this demonstrated as people drive forward in an all out attack on our belief systems, our political stance, or anything we hold dear. The intuitive reaction to a direct attack is to stop the attack, push back from the attack, or fight off the attack. We see this every day in social media, in public forums, and legacy media. As the attacker drives in full force attacking what they believe are the core values of their intended victim, prepared with every counter argument that could arise, the defenders are caught back on their heels, and off balanced. As the verbally skilled, powerful attacker drives forward with their arguments, the defender loses balance, loses the ability to react, and just like a physical tackle is driven to the proverbial concrete, where their head bounces off the sidewalk, and unable to respond, are left defeated, and demoralized. The ALLOWING that happens in Life Defense might be a question rather than a response, a curiosity rather than a defense, or a pause, rather than an immediate knee-jerk response. These techniques allow for time, space, and contemplation, and require the attacker to actually defend their position over and over again. This over extension is not unlike the overextension of a body as it drives towards its intended target, overextended, and off-balance. It is not hard to see how this overextended off balanced attacker may end up face into the proverbial concrete as an overextended attack often does. All of this, because the defender was able to ALLOW the attacker to overextend themselves, to shoot all of their bullets at once, and become off-balanced. In life, and Life Defense, I choose to allow, and overaggressive attacker to overextend themselves, to drive forward with as much speed and aggression as possible, allowing them to seal their own fate, rather than fight, or attempt to stop their advance. In essence, when confronted on the field of battle, consider “stop, stopping and just ALLOW…” #allenhughes #allow #lifedefense Photo by Andrea Piacquadio: https://www.pexels.com/photo/mad-formal-executive-man-yelling-at-camera-3760790/ --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/allen-hughes/message

This week on Stupid Sexy Privacy: Killer Bosses. 120,000 workers die each year in the United States because of bad workplace management. With the popularity of Remote Work, "Bossware" lets your boss spy on you while you're at home and drive you crazy without you having to go to the office.Sound crazy? Talk to the Truck Drivers. Their Hell is our Future. If you work remotely, this episode is for you. This Week's Privacy TipWorking from home can be a great opportunity, but you need to take steps to protect both yourself and your employer from Ransomware and other shady attacks. In addition to following the steps explained in previous episodes of the show — You've listened to the other episodes, right? — We recommend keeping your hardware for work entirely separated from your hardware for life, running a VPN, and regularly running software updates. As far as the bigger issue goes with your boss spying on you at home, the United States doesn't have clear regulations (at this time) to stop them. But. You CAN (and should) talk to your Human Resources Director about what the company policy is about Remote Work, what data they're going to see and collect, and who that data gets shared with.Do you really trust Microsoft to be a good protector of your data? We're back (again)! As it's the beginning of the year, we're talking motivation. What gets you motivated? And most importantly, how do you stay motivated?
In the world of self-defense we often talk about a feeling, a voice or a premonition that says something like, “Something is not right, do not go down there, or this person is not being truthful!” In police work at the highest levels, CIA, FBI, DEA operatives talk about their “weirdo meter.” And when that voice speaks, they LISTEN. You may have guessed that in Life Defense we again draw a parallel to their world and recommend LISTENING to the voice. It is at this point that some may feel an overwhelming urge to turn off this podcast, shut down their screen and label me a crazy man. However, before you do, consider that the “little voice” is a real thing, it works and has saved countless lives both in law enforcement, and probably in your own life. Whether you're a believer in spiritual things, or somehow scientifically link it up to your reticular activating system, LISTEN. In the real sense of what is there is a little voice that warns you, and if you will LISTEN, of danger, liars, and deceptions, and it will save your life! The key that I have found is first to LISTEN, then to act. When we act we see immediate or long term results from our action, and our LISTENING gets more acute. Just like anything we do, practice and see…LISTEN. #lifedefense #listen #allenhughes Photo by Andrea Piacquadio: https://www.pexels.com/photo/man-in-red-polo-shirt-sitting-near-chalkboard-3779448/ --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/allen-hughes/message

Grappling night was always fun for Jane. It was a good chance to work on her escapes and submissions. She love “rolling' with everyone and tapping out, or escaping from the big guys was her personal challenge. As she hit the mat Jane found herself being pulled into Davey's guard. Even though he was on his back, he was strong, and she felt his legs closing tight around her waist. As Davey attempted a head and arm hold Jane verbally said, “Nope not tonight buddy!” and all at once smashed her knee into his tail bone, and straightened her back releasing his grip as he tried to pull her back into his weakened position. In one swift move Jane REMOVED her center, by breaking his ankles he was attempting to lock around her, and pulling back, popping his knees with the palms of her hands as she quickly stood up, avoiding a kick to her pretty face. She was laughing with giddiness at her success, and Davey's frustrated scowl. The instructor blew her whistle to signal the end of the session as Jane gloated in her success. In life, as in grappling, control of “center,” meaning the place where power is generated for all human motion, is key. Maintaining “control of center” is essential. When we find ourselves loosing control of center, we also find our motion stopped, and manipulated by outside forces. When we REMOVE our center from the control, and motion and balance is regained. As we are always in the chaos of conflict maintaining or regaining “center” is powerful and may save our life. When you find yourself loosing center REMOVE yourself from whatever, or whoever is controlling your center before it's too late. REMOVE yourself to protect your center. 18. Failures or Lessons with atlas amari Happy New Year! As we step into 2022, I think it's a perfect time to reflect on 2021. To consider what we're thankful for, what went well, and what we can learn from. Todays' Episode, Failures or Lessons? We'll focus on learning from our failures. Here is that quote: “Sometimes it takes a wrong turn to get you to the right place.” While, I am a firm believer that there are not truly any “wrong turns,” I do believe that failure can provide valuable and unexpected lessons. Episode 50 is a really good example of adapting to circumstances in order to stay on my health journey and maintain a healthy lifestyle. I have a tendency to want to not do something if I can't do it the same way I always do. But I was able to break out of this by finding a place to exercise. In this case, I got on a treadmill, which I had rarely done in the past. Read the full post at http://RunningAFEVER.com/285 Photo by Andrea Piacquadio from Pexels
The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light. But light is complicated. It can burn and glare. The familiar and beloved song from the prophet is about military conquest and might, a leader whose rule is absolute. Our children are the future, yet our willingness to invest in them dawdles and whimpers. With so much at stake - including our species' own survival - why have we chosen to ignore this problem? This episode takes a look at the motivations and bottlenecks surrounding this issue. "It is in playing and only in playing that the individual child or adult is able to be creative and to use the whole personality, and it is only in being creative that the individual discovers the self." -- Donald Woods Winnicott "Whether in the public or independent sector, in schools or at home, being creative in providing education and promoting creativity are not dispensable luxuries. They are essential to enable us all to make lives that are worth living." -- Sir Ken Robinson Links: _____________________________________________________________ Education, Children, Learning & Development (courses, books, research, and other resources): https://www.amazon.com/Make-Stick-Science-Successful-Learning/dp/0674729013 https://www.amazon.com/Intelligence-Understanding-Creation-Intelligent-Machines/dp/0805078533 https://www.amazon.com/Discipline-Without-Punishment-Employees-Performers/dp/0814402763 https://www.wondrium.com/scientific-secrets-for-raising-kids-who-thrive https://www.wondrium.com/raising-emotionally-and-socially-healthy-kids https://www.wondrium.com/how-to-raise-lifelong-learners https://www.wondrium.com/how-the-world-learns-comparative-educational-systems Scrum: https://www.amazon.com/Scrum-Doing-Twice-Work-Half/dp/038534645X Scrum in The Classroom: https://www.scrum.org/resources/blog/scrum-classroom-part-1-time-change https://threeteacherstalk.com/2019/01/25/using-scrum-in-the-classroom/ Marijuana & The Adolescent Brain (Research): Marijuana Use and High School Dropout: The Influence of Unobservables: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2910149/ Effects of Cannabis on the Adolescent Brain: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3930618/ Is the Adolescent Brain at Greater Vulnerability to the Effects of Cannabis?: https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fpsyt.2020.00859/full Cannabis and the adolescent brain: https://www.pnas.org/content/117/1/7 What Pot Really Does to the Teen Brain: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/what-pot-really-does-to-the-teen-brain/ NOVA Principles (bad science): NOVA homepage: https://novaprinciples.com/ Religious Kids Are Less Likely to Get in Trouble (as cited by NOVA): http://www.center4research.org/religious-kids-likely-good/ Effects of Religion (the more honest science): Mixed Blessing: The Beneficial and Detrimental Effects of Religion on Child Development among Third-Graders: https://www.mdpi.com/2077-1444/10/1/37/htm Science Does Not Say That Religious Children Are More Likely to be 'Immoral': https://futurism.com/no-science-does-not-say-that-religious-children-are-more-likely-to-be-immoral -- The Great Filter now has a website :) https://thegreatfilterpodcast.com/ Your feedback is appreciated and important to us. In this episode we return to the subject of Certification, this time focusing on how to adapt development of programs to meet the breakneck pace of change with growing Software-as-a-Service businesses. Dave interviews Debbie Smith, who is Sr. Manager of Smartsheet University and an expert in credentialing and certification programs. Pencils down, it’s time to write your certification! Photo by Andrea Piacquadio from Pexels For many Customer Education professionals, we first begin working on certification programs when a senior leader asks us to, but the definition of certification can vary wildly from person to person. It’s crucial to know what you intend to build, what outcomes it will generate, and how much maintenance it requires. The hypothesis that Dave and Debbie explore this episode is: “Certification programs for SaaS can be delivered in much shorter timelines, but with caveats.” When some people say they want to develop a certification, what they actually mean is “some learning modules with a quiz at the end.” But to create a legally defensible certification that can be used for hiring, firing, and other high-stakes situations, you need something far more rigorous, fair, and accurate. This means it’s going to take time and money. In this episode, Debbie walks us through the project management required to build and maintain a certification. She takes us through how to build a JTA (Job Task Analysis) which defines what the job being certified actually is, and what the skills involved are. This means you need to meet with SMEs to understand what is being certified and what skills are involved to do the job. Then it’s on to item writing – and by “items” here, we mean questions. Writing valid and fair questions is extremely difficult, and there’s an art to it! Debbie suggests some techniques for item writing workshops and writing better multiple-choice questions. And getting the right SMEs in, especially if they are billable and their time comes at a premium, is difficult. But you can also reward them for their efforts by giving them a certification, a badge, or other perks for participating in the program as an expert. Debbie also shares tips for beta testing, and how many people you need to participate in a beta process. Keep in mind that for SaaS businesses, whose products constant

According to a study by the CDC, we are in a sleeplessness epidemic... With more than a third of American adults are not getting enough sleep on a regular basis. And we're killing ourselves because of it. Short sleep equals shorter life. It's that simple. Alzheimer's, dementia, obesity, heart disease, diabetes 2, cholesterol, brain fog... There's not a single part of your body or your brain that doesn't suffer when you're not sleeping 7-9 hours a night on a regular basis. I know, I know; you're too busy or you don't have time or you don't need that much sleep. But here's the deal... You are going to pay the price for your sleepless nights eventually, guaranteed. If you or a loved one suffers from sleeplessness, you better listen to Episode 013. We're living longer than our ancestors did, no question. But at what cost? Especially in the States, we're sicker and fatter than we've ever been. Cancers, heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, obesity… Is the stuff we're shoveling onto our plates killing us? Maybe. And we can't trust the government to monitor what's allowed on the grocery shelves. In episode 12 of Winning Your 4th Quarter, we'll talk about some of the food additives allowed in the US that are banned in much of the rest of the world. We're also going to touch on the FDA's allowable “defects” in our food. My Dad used to describe disgusting stuff with, “That'll gag a maggot!” And believe it or not, according to the FDA guidelines, maggots are allowable in some cases, but only a few. (Here's where you say, “OOH MY GAWD!”) You're unknowingly putting crap in your mouth that you wouldn't feed your pets. Let's try to fix that in this episode. Links...
