In this episode of French Insider, Reid Whitten, Managing Partner of Sheppard Mullin's London office and leader of the firm's CFIUS team, joins host and Sheppard Mullin's French Desk Co-Chair, Valérie Demont, to discuss the incoming Trump Administration's proposed tariffs and their potential impact on international trade.   What We Discussed in This Episode: President-Elect Trump has signaled his intention to actively use tariffs as a key tool in trade policy. What has he said on the subject so far, and what can we expect on a general level? Where does Europe stand in terms of these tariffs, and will French products be impacted? Can we expect a process for tariff exemption under the incoming administration? What do we know about the pick for Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, and his views on tariffs? If these tariff policies are implemented and enforced as planned, what effects could they have on existing multilateral or bilateral agreements, and what global response might we see? What should businesses consider as they prepare for these tariffs, and are there any immediate steps they can take to better position themselves? Are there any developments within the United States that could make relocating production domestically more cost-effective for businesses? What was the outcome of the previous Trump Administration's tariff policy, and did they accomplish President Trump's goals?   About Reid Whitten As Managing Partner of Sheppard Mullin's London office and leader of the firm's CFIUS Team, Reid Whitten's practice centers on international trade regulations and investigations.

In this episode I am discussing the economic impacts of the AI revolution, and whether or not it is time for UBI. AI will take over jobs and increase productivity per remaining worker to compensate. We are bound for a situation where owners will be able to squeeze more profits from a declining workforce, while the working class continues on the path to extinction and increasing hardship. Corporate profits need to keep increasing to pay shareholders, and corporations have been able to use the threat of offshoring jobs, while having to compete with more unscrupulous companies to hold wages down. I am a proponent of some sort of UBI but I recognize that the path from here to there is not obvious. I fear that if we don't find a peaceful means to distribute the increasingly concentrated wealth created by robotics, and AI, that the uprising is coming. People are getting restless. Despite being significantly more productive than our parents generation, we have less real wealth. Less purchasing power. Less free time. Less leisure. AI and robotics were supposed to free us from the grind. Make life easier. Instead we have to compete with robots in a dwindling job market to make ends meet. It doesn't have to be this way. Is there an equitable and peaceful path to more widely share the benefits of automation or are we rushing headlong into upheaval? Dr. Karl Widerquist has a Ph.D. in economics from the City University of New York. For several years Widerquist pursued both music and economics. He played in several indie bands in New York in the 1990s. He was a Hoover Fellow at the Université Catholique de Louvain. Widerquist received a second doctorate in Political Theory at the University of Oxford and then worked as a Fellow at the Murphy Institute at Tulane University and as a Visiting Professor at the University of Reading in the United Kingdom. He is a Professor of Philosophy at Georgetown University-Qatar specializing in distributive justice. Widerquist has been the co-chair of the Basic Income Earth Network (BIEN) since 2008. Olivier Arifon is a professor at Université Catholique de Lille, and he has held visiting professorships at universities around the world. He also works as a communications consultant and trainer for diverse clients in academic, diplomatic, and other spheres. His new book, Le Récit Politique Chinois: Soft Power, Communication, Influence, was published in 2021 by L'Harmattan. The book examines China's changing reputation in the world. It explores how China is viewed globally and also how Chinese officials work in many domains to cultivate a particular image. In the course of an email exchange about his new book, Olivier mentioned the relevance of China for the ongoing war in Ukraine. This seemed like a topic worth exploring, and one which would not feel out-of-place on a platform – like this one – primarily concerned with Asian Studies. After the initial shock of the invasion of Ukraine itself, recent days have seen more attention paid by the media to other geopolitical dimensions to the conflict. One of the big question marks, as Olivier and I sat down to record, was precisely what steps or actions China might take with respect to the conflict, and what geopolitical consequences those might entail. Is muscle wasting a fate humans can avoid, or will the problem of aging-related muscle loss only be resolved when the mystery of aging is solved? Researchers—from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, University of Amsterdam, Sorbonne Université, Amsterdam University Medical Center VUmc, Université Catholique de Louvain, KU Leuven, and Institut NeuroMyoGène—conducted a study aimed at elucidating whether muscle stem cells are inherently impaired by the aging process in their ability to sense and respond to mechanical cues. Their priority research paper was published on the cover of Aging (Aging-US) Volume 14, Issue 1, and entitled, “Reduced growth rate of aged muscle stem cells is associated with impaired mechanosensitivity.” MUSCLE STEM CELLS Muscle stem cells (MuSCs) are stem cells located within skeletal muscle tissues. MuSCs function to repair damaged myofibers and give rise to new skeletal muscle cells. These self-renewing stem cells are involved in muscle growth, repair and regeneration. As we age, MuSCs decline in number and lose their potential to regenerate damaged myofibers, leading to sarcopenia. The researchers in this study hypothesized that the responsiveness of aged MuSCs is impared by the aging process both physically and mechanically. “We postulated that aged MuSCs are intrinsically impaired in their responsiveness to omnipresent mechanical cues through alterations in MuSC morphology, mechanical properties, and number of integrins, culminating in impaired proliferative capacity.” Full blog - https://www.impactjournals.com/journals/blog/trending-with-impact/trending-with-impact-are-our-muscles-intrinsically-impaired-by-aging/ DOI - https://doi.org/10.18632/aging.203830 Correspondence to - Richard T. IP, the Key Asset to Support SMEs' Development (with Yann Ménière, European Patent Office, Chief Economist)

Considering small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from an intellectual property (IP)perspective, it is all the more critical that SMEs don't play by the same rules as larger businesses. Indeed, SMEs and larger firms in the European Union perform very differently with regard to their ownership and use of IP rights (IPR). The European Patent Office (EPO), based in Munich, Germany, recently reported that, although only a smaller proportion of SMEs (9%) own or use patents, trademarks, or designs when compared to larger firms (60%), the advantage that these IPRs provide in terms of revenue per employee is far greater for SMEs (+68%) than for larger firms (+18%). Understanding the role, impacts, and challenges associated with IP assets in the SME context is therefore necessary to design successful R&D, branding, and financial strategies – whether from a policy perspective or at the company-level.Brand & New's guest is EPO Chief Economist Yann Ménière, who joined the Office in 2016. Though currently on leave as a result of his role with the EPO, Mr. Ménière is professor of economics at MINES ParisTech, in France, where he led the chair on "IP and Markets for Technology." His research and expertise relate to the economics of innovation, competition, and IP. In recent years, he has been focusing more specifically on IP and standards, markets for technology, and IP issues in climate negotiations., He has written articles for academic publications as well as a number of policy studies for the European Commission, the French government, and other public organizations. In addition to MINES ParisTech, he is still teaching the economics of IT standards at Imperial College Business School and the economics of IP law at the Law School of Université Catholique of Louvain in Belgium.Every two weeks, on Tuesday, Brand & New gives the floor to inspiring individuals, with a 360-degree vision, to help brand owners, intellectual property lawyers, and marketing and finance professionals (and beyond!) stay curious and agile in an ever-evolving business environment. CUSP is a multidisciplinary research centre which aims to understand the economic, social and political dimensions of sustainable prosperity. Tim has been at the forefront of international debates on sustainability for three decades and has worked closely with the UK Government, the United Nations, the European Commission, numerous NGOs, private companies and foundations to bring economic and social science research into sustainability. During five years at the Stockholm Environment Institute in the early 1990s, he pioneered the concept of preventative environmental management—a core principle of the circular economy—outlined in his 1996 book Material Concerns: Pollution Profit and Quality of life. From 2004 to 2011 he was Economics Commissioner for the UK Sustainable Development Commission where his work culminated in the publication of his controversial and ground-breaking book Prosperity without Growth (2009/2017) which has subsequently been translated into 17 foreign languages. He was also visiting scholar at Berkeley University, at Montréal University, at the Max-Planck-Institut für Gesellschaftsforschung (Cologne), and at the Centre for European Studies, Harvard University, Cambridge (USA). In 2005, he was awarded an EU Fulbright-in-Residence grant at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (USA). In his paper, presented at the Social Justice Ireland Annual Policy Conference on the 18th November 2020, Philippe discussed the fact that, at the European level, what the pandemic has cast doubt on is the very fundamentals of European integration. The main features of the European Union, what could be described as its “pillars”, are these: the single market and freedom of movement, the euro and the Stability and Growth Pact, and competition and state-aid law. We can already look ahead and see that the post-crisis EU could be standing on very different foundations if the questioning of the three basic pillars continues over time or, conversely, it could just as easily go back to its old ways.  What will the world environment in which this happens be, though? Here, Philippe provides four possible scenarios emerging.

Dimensionality reduction is an old yet unsolved problem, with many applications in data visualization, knowledge discovery, and machine learning in general. Our aim in this talk will be to review several developments in the field of dimensionality reduction, with a particular focus on nonlinear methods. As an introduction, we will point out some weird properties of high dimensional spaces, which will motivate the use of dimensionality reduction. Next, we will go back in time and start our review with a short reminder about well known techniques such as principal component analysis and multidimensional scaling. Our travel into time will also bring us to visit Sammon mapping and other methods based on distance preservation. Next, we will come across self-organizing maps and auto-encoders with bottleneck neural networks. Some spectral methods such as Isomap and locally linear embedding will be reviewed as well. A glance at recent methods based on similarity preservation such as stochastic neighbor embedding will close the survey. Finally, we will try to identify the relationships between the different approaches, and say a few words about quality criteria for dimensionality reduction techniques.
