TLDR; Wear Headphones. 9 Reasons Headphones are the Key to a Professional Podcast Recording Session.1. You'll know if there's a catastrophic noise being baked into the recording (electrical hum, static noise, buzzing sounds). 2. You won't be off-mic half of the time. (You can hear when you're in the sweet spot of your microphone, and when you're not). 3. Increased awareness of Plosives (hard P'S and B's), Mouth-noises (YUCK!), and Proximity Effect (overemphasised and potentially muddy bass in the voice). 4. Awareness of rubbing, zipping and scratching of clothing, jewellery, furniture, mic stand, and the microphone itself. 5. You can get more consistent levels between speakers on the recording, which can reduce post-production time and lessen the need for automated and potentially expensive levelling tools. 6. You can make choices about what environmental noises are actually making it into the recording. (You won't waste time continually referencing things that are barely audible on the actual recording). 7. You'll know if you're baking-in destructive or bad sounding audio effects into the recording (overly aggressive noise-gates, reverb effects, or too much compression and/or bass and treble boost). 8. You'll be able to hear everyone in the room that's on a mic, not just the person closest to you by proximity (or simply the loudest person(s) in the room). This allows for quieter speakers to get heard, and get their turn … particularly when lots of cross-talk is occurring in the conversation, or speakers aren't facing each other directly. Headphones create a level playing field for "being heard". 9. Producers can talk to you IRT yet discretely via your headphones without baking that conversation into the recording - if they have a talk-back function on their mixing or recording console. If you need to talk Headphones, or Podcasting in general, feel free to send me an email (josh@jcaldigital.org) or DM me on X @joshuacliston or Instagram @joshuacliston Have a great week, and happy Podcasting.
Should you outsource podcast tasks or handle them yourself? Is your podcasting workflow taking over your life? Are you looking at your computer monitor with sleepy eyes, wondering where your time and energy went? Perhaps it's time to consider outsourcing some of your podcasting tasks. Today, Co-host D.R. Fay shares her inner conflict about delegating tasks such as video editing and graphic design to another person to attract more clients to her podcast production business. The team discusses the importance of delegation and time management for podcasters and business owners, emphasizing the need to focus on tasks that generate the most value and outsource those others can do. We also compare notes on work-life balance, setting boundaries, and prioritizing self-care, especially when running a business. If you're feeling the anxiety of a time crunch, tune into this episode for ideas and reinforcement to further consider delegating your podcast tasks. 2023.09.20 – 0993 – The Diction-ary of Voice – P - Part 2 Pharynx – the area between the larynx and the nasal cavitiesPhonation – the process of making sounds into words, which articulation turns into recognisable speechPhonemes – the different smaller sounds which when combined form a wordPhrasing – delivering groups of words within a sentence to enhance meaningPickup – when you go back to re-record a small section of content, such as a sentence, because of a slip, trip or mispronunciation. A ‘take' is a longer piece of content. Whereas a Take may be annotated 1, 2, 3 a Pickup will be marked A, B, C, so you may have “Take 21, Pickup C”, which helps the producer keep track of the ‘best bits'.Pickup pattern – the three-dimensional area in which a microphone will best detect soundPitch - the relative highness or lowness of the register of voice, determined by the frequency of the vibration of sound: the faster the vocal folds vibrate, the higher the pitch that they create.Placement – where you put your tongue in your mouth to create certain word-soundsPlayback on smalls – playing back a recording on small sub-optimum speakers to replicate how people will hear the produced version, at home or in the carPlosives - the group of sounds in the English language which cause a small ‘explosion' of air from the mouth, often at the start and end of words (‘stops') such as b, d, g, k, p, t. (Put your hand in front of your mouth as you say these letters and feel that rush of air.) Plosives are sometimes called ‘breath blasts', and travel from a speaker's mouth directly into a microphone's diaphragm, causing a moment of deep distortion Hosted on Acast. Huberman Lab Podcast Notes Key Takeaways The human brain is shaped differently depending on sounds you are exposed to in utero and throughout the first years of brain developmentIt's probably best to skip the white noise machine to help your babies sleep – our brain is structured to hear environmental noises; constant white noise exposure may lead to delaysWhether you are right-handed or left-handed is strongly genetically determinedThe earlier, more intense, and longer you can have exposure to a second language – the better; human interaction allows for greater specialization of the languageMemory is widely distributed across the brain which is good because even in the event of head injury or illness requiring surgery, memory is generally preservedNew technologies are being studied to give paralyzed and nonverbal patients a chance to communicate again through the use of electrodes connected from the brain to a computer which uses AI to translateRead the full notes @ podcastnotes.orgMy guest is Eddie Chang, MD, a neurosurgeon and professor of neurological surgery at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and the co-director of the Center for Neural Engineering & Prostheses. This week, we'll learn to deal with the popping plosives. We'll overlook mic placement and other silly techniques to reduce plosives and we'll go right at the source of the issue, our lips. I'll share an exercise to help you release the plosives with more ease, reducing the popping sound on the mic in the long term, and I'll share an emergency tool for exceptional occasions. What You Will Learn In This Episode: - Why some consonants explode on the microphone - The connection between the vigour we use to speak and plosives - How to reduce plosives by paying attention to the lip tension - A quick fix to reduce plosives (not a long-term solution) In most cases, we sound poppy on the mic because we are over-excited during the plosive release phase. To reduce plosives, we must increase awareness of our lip tension when voicing and explore the sound produced under different levels of tension. This week, we will go through some necessary and exciting theories about sounds. After working with the basics of articulation, release and toning, the next natural step is learning about the sounds of words. In this show, we will divide our speaking sounds into two large groups, vowels and consonants, and we will dive into the mechanics of how these sounds are produced. Hop on and join me in today's entertaining technical interlude. What You Will Learn In This Episode: - The difference between obstructed and unobstructed sounds - What are short, long, and sliding vowels, and how we can identify them - What are plosive and fricative sounds, and what is the difference between them - What are voiced and unvoiced fricatives The main goal of learning to identify the elements of our voicing is to use this information to our advantage and produce lovely, expressing and engaging sounds. This way, we can avoid making annoying sounds on the mic, like extreme explosions from our plosives, which distort our words' sounds. This episode could be called "The Wisdom of Rob Crow," Mr. Crow has a lot of wise and insightful observations to share. Regardless, Rob Crow joins Dwyer to talk about fatherhood, how not everything needs to be a reaction to horribleness, sobriety, how at the age of fourteen he already had a proclivity for original music and if someone is promoting art it's probably garbage. Pop filters clean up the sound before you even edit it. They protect your mic from popping sounds, or rather, fast-moving air called plosives. Plosives are created from popping Ps when speaking close to your mic. Pop filters come in a variety of forms and are typically nylon or metal mesh screens that sit between you and the mic. Foam windscreens also slide on the mic itself and are great for omnidirectional recording.Key Points From This Episode:Pop filters help keep your sound clean.Which sounds make plosive. How you can prevent plosives. Today's episode is about microphone techniques. We will let aside the different mic setups and styles, and we will focus on the universally beneficial tips when it comes to speaking on a microphone. We will talk about body alignment, the better way of facing a microphone, the ideal distance from the mic and much more. What You Will Learn In This Episode: The importance of body alignment when speaking on a mic How to let the microphone take your voice Plosives and how to play across the microphone It's not about you or the mic - it's about the listener How hydration can help our microphone technique These five tips apply to voice professionals, but they are also helpful for Zoom meetings or virtual presentations. Time and practice will help you perfect these techniques, and still, they'll have a visible impact in your voice performance from day one. Editor's Note: Today's show was recorded Thursday afternoon, before news broke that President and Mrs. Trump tested positive for COVID-19.“That was a hot mess inside a dumpster fire inside a train wreck."CNN's Jake Tapper recapping Tuesday's Presidential DebateThe sh*tshow that was Tuesday night's debate may have finally gotten us to the change that I've been crying for since at least 2016. A mute button. If, in my radio days, I could manage to stop talking after 14 seconds when Katy Perry started singing, a person running for political office should be able to shut it after two full minutes. It sounds, as of this recording, that the Commission on Presidential Debates may finally give moderators that power. Nothing was accomplished Tuesday night, and for any undecided voters that still want to cast a ballot on issues, they are no closer to an answer now than they were at the beginning of the week. If you give each candidate an opportunity to talk, you might learn something.2020 might become, among many other things, the year of the mute button. Almost all of us have learned to use it on Zoom calls - when we need to cough, sneeze, drink, eat, etc. At least those with common courtesy do anyway. In a podcast, the mute button is extremely useful. For example, I recorded a podcast with a host and 4 panelists recently. The two things that made it flow very well are that the host called on each panelist individually, and that everyone muted their mic when not speaking. I had the speakers on 5 separate tracks, and the editing was very straightforward.Yesterday, I recorded a show with a client while my wife and I were dog-sitting. There was running, and barking, happening upstairs. I muted my mic when I wasn't speaking, and the edit was easy. Now, all things in moderation of course. If you're having a lively conversation in a podcast, there's no need to mute yourself in a frequent back-and-forth. But if you're going long periods of time without speaking, mute yourself. Your editor will thank you.Fascinating piece of news this week between the connection in "plosives" and COVID spread. Podcast editors often have to eliminate plosives, or the little puff of air that comes out of your mouth with hard consonants like P and T. (For a demo of this, hold your palm in front of your mouth and say the word "pizza.") You'll feel a little puff of air. Well those little puffs of air, or "mini jet streams" can carry COVID-19 particles. This was covered last night here in Detroit by Channel 4. https://www.clickondetroit.com/health/good-health/2020/09/30/how-chance-of-spreading-covid-19-through-air-changes-based-on-what-words-are-spoken/In other podcast news this week, Spotify is testing polls for podcasts - hosts can ask one question per show and have listeners weigh in: https://techcrunch.com/2020/09/23/spotify-adds-an-interactive-feature-for-podcasts-with-launch-of-polls/?guccounter=1Apple bought Scout FM, which turns podcasts into radio stations, and shut down Scout's apps on Apple and Android, possibly to use the technology in its own iOS application: https://www.forbes.com/sites/johnkoetsier/2020/09/25/heres-how-apple-could-use-new-podcasting-acquisition-scout-fm/#52b8875a7974Wondery, the company that produced Dr. Death and Dirty John, may be up for sale for the low, low price of $200 million. https://www.bloombergquint.com/business/podcast-company-wondery-explores-sale-for-at-least-200-million?utm_source=podnews.net&utm_medium=web&utm_campaign=podnews.net:2020-09-28Podcast Movement Virtual's schedule is out. Hey remember in the BEFORE TIMES when all was well and we didn't have to bring up the whole pandemic thing every time we talked to another human being? Well that's when we recorded this, with the intention to hold on to it for a few weeks while we built up a buffer of episodes. Then the world started burning down and a few weeks turned into a couple months and, well, here we are, with an episode that does not address the global crisis, but BOY HOWDY Audrey sure does talk about detective-based media a lot. But hey, maybe you're looking for a good escape from having to think about the pandemic! In which case, we present to you: Kitten Whiskers and Kanye: The Return of the Plosives.

About how microphones react to air, how to speak into the mic and how to deal with the plosives.
Thank you for tuning into Patience and Hustle Daily! I have a really big podcast coming soon that you will NOT want to miss! It’s all about the best and greatest tips on branding. I’m not doing the podcast alone though! I am bringing two amazing people to help me with it. I’m bringing in Tim Coe who is out of the UK, he is an incredible marketing expert, and bringing in the Hank Norman of 2 Market Media. Hank is a media guru who has worked with famous people like Grant Cardone! This will be an episode you will want to watch out! In the mean time while that is currently cooking, I want to bring you something fresh to hold you over and give you some added value. I want to give you 3 things you can do to improve the audio quality of your podcast. 1 Get a pop filter, and move a little bit away from the microphone. A pop filter will help screen out some of the air, to help prevent those “Plosives”, like the P, and B. With that you can position that about 5 inches away from the mic to also force you to keep your distance. Why though? This will help you will harsh sounds that may come through when speaking so it doesn’t Peak the signal and cause distortion. 2 Set the recording level accordingly. When you’re testing out the sound, set the volume to just a little over half way on the meter. You don’t want the recording level to be almost maxed out, because if you get louder it could peak the signal, again, causing distortion. When you go back to edit the audio, you can boost the signal, add in compression and make up the couple of decibels that were lost. Setting the recording levels correctly will help eliminate a lot of post editing issues you may come across. 3 When editing, you should always use what is called a “high pass filter” This is done with the Equalization plug in that is in the audio software you’re using. Whether that software is GarageBand, Ableton, ProTools, Audacity, Audition, or something else, it will have an EQ plug in. You’ll want to find a spot between 0 and typically 100 hz, where it just cuts out the low shelf noise, but doesn’t affect the natural sound of your voice. As you move it around, if you cut too much you’ll hear your voice sound thin, and not normal, so you just back it off until you don’t hear an actually difference in your voice. I know that seems weird, like, when you edit, it should change the sound of something, right? In most cases. With editing, sometimes it’s about eliminating something that just doesn’t add any quality. Using a high pass filter will help cut out any low humming noise that may just muddy up the audio quality. There you have it! 3 easy things you can do that will make a big difference! If you have questions, let me know! First, I give you my initial reactions and use cases for my new Sennheiser MKH-416 microphone. *NOTE: This is not an in-depth review or anything like that. Also, don't miss two revealing samples of audio: Audio Technica 8035 vs SennheiserMKH-416 My processed MKH-416 on my stream called Meditate With Chris I also discuss the 416's: Specifications (at the bottom of this post) Quality: Lots of smooth clarity in mid and high end. Smooth low end. My accessories: Shock mount, My laser gun holder Testing close miking: Definitely getting plosives even when using the included foam windscreen. Plosives are easy to fix in post, but if you're streaming Live it would be awesome to avoid the plosives going out on the Livestream. My streaming use case: Picks up my HVAC unit really well, mostly because there are no walls in between. My Portico II processing: 48v Phantom Power, since mic is not close to my mouth I'm adding quite a bit of low end at 220 shelving, rolling off the low end around 80 Hz, using the Blue Silk mode, and my usual amount of to-tape compression (mild). ANNOUNCEMENT: I started the Daily Goody! I discuss a use case for Auphonic Multitrack - leveling all voices to the same LUFS level before mixing and editing. I describe me EQ'ing the last quarter of a guests track because she moved away from the computer and there was suddenly background noise and she also lost some clarity. Podcastification - podcasting tips, podcast tricks, how to podcast better
Sound quality really, really, really matters for your podcast show.If you want to know how much I believe that to be the case you should go back and listen to Podcastification episode #2 - http://www.PodcastFastTrack.com/editingmatters (www.PodcastFastTrack.com/editingmatters) One of the most difficult places to ensure that the sound quality is the best it can be is when you are doing guest interviews or having a conversation with a guest to the show. When you introduce a person to your show who is not familiar with audio production or sound quality issues - you've just introduced a whole slew of variables into your show that can seriously impact the sound quality. Some of the more common sound quality issues a guest can introduce to your show are:They don't have a good microphone. The only microphone they have is a "phone" mic and it keeps rubbing against their shirt. They keep bumping the desk the mic is setting on or the microphone itself. Dogs, doorbells, cell phones, children, email sounds, etc. They don't speak into the microphone. They are too close to the microphone (pops, harsh "S" sounds, and other http://www.thefreedictionary.com/Plosives (plosives) - yes, that's what they're called). Their input volume is turned up too much. Etc., etc., etc. In this episode I'm going to take just a few moments to run through some of the simplest remedies to most of those problems. Remedy #1: Prepare your guests If your guest doesn't know anything about sound quality and what it takes to get good sound quality in an audio recording, it's your job as the host to kindly and briefly educate them. Now I know this is a contested point. I heard one podcaster say just a week or so ago that he doesn't want to add any additional burden to his busy guest's schedule by asking them to do anything extra before the recording. I get that - but I disagree. If the people you're interviewing care anything about their own brand and image, they will appreciate you helping them sound the very best they can for your audience - which may at least in part, become their audience after your interview. So what I usually do to prepare my guests is this: I send them a one-page PDF document that outlines some of the issues that I need them to take care of BEFORE we start recording. I know other podcasters who create a page on their website with the same information, to which they point their guests ahead of time. You can find a copy of my PDF document which you are free to tweak and make your own, in my resource center at http://www.PodcastFastTrack.com/resources (www.PodcastFastTrack.com/resources) . But so you don't have to wait to download it... here's a quick blast through the document to give you an idea of the kinds of things I include: FOR MY GUESTS I can't thank you enough for being willing to come on my show. I'm confident that your experience and expertise will be of great value to my listeners. I just wanted to give you a quick bullet list of things that you can do to prepare for our conversation. I want you and your brand to be represented in the best possible light, so please read through the list below and make any of the suggested adjustments you are able to make prior to our conversation. Following these suggestions will enable us to make the most of our time. Visit the necessary "personal room" before our scheduled time to chat. Have a glass of water nearby during our chat… you'll probably need it. If you think you might reference any websites or links, please have them open and ready so you don't have to hunt for them during the conversation. Turn off all non-essential programs on your computer to enable our recording to happen with less potential for technical glitches. Please use a wired computer connection (not wireless) if at all possible. Find a quiet place for our conversation. Make sure all potential noise-makers are turned off or taken care of ahead of time (phones, email, children,...
