What if there was a simple yet powerful way to step back from the whirlwind of worry, self-criticism, and negative thinking that's clouding your mind? In this episode, I introduce defusion, a powerful strategy from acceptance and commitment therapy designed to manage difficult thoughts and mental health challenges like anxiety, depression, and stress. I discuss cognitive fusion and its impact, and then present the Defusion Wheel, a practical tool I created to help unhook from unhelpful thoughts. I guide listeners through various defusion techniques categorised into observing and noticing thoughts, playing with language, and questioning thoughts. This approach aims to change our relationship with thoughts, reducing their emotional grip and helping us live a life aligned with our values.Highlights of this episode include:01:18 Understanding Cognitive Fusion and Its Impact 03:11 Introduction to Defusion and Stepping Back from Thoughts 05:02 Observe and Notice Techniques 06:50 Play with Language: Making Thoughts Less Powerful 09:23 Question Yourself: Shifting from Believing to Evaluating ThoughtsBONUS CONTENTCurious about the Defusion Wheel? When I then decided to join the United States Marine Corps, two doctors told me that boot camp would kill me, thanks to a blood disorder I was born with. But I wasn't about to let that stop me. Not only did I complete boot camp (with a twisted ankle, no less), but I was chosen as the honor graduate in Infantry school and went on to spend 7 months in Iraq where my job was to walk in front of our vehicle convoys to find explosives before they could destroy our vehicles. That was just the beginning of my understanding of the positive power of fear and struggle. In 2012, I left a comfortable corporate job to drag a 190-pound sled 350-miles across the world's second largest polar ice cap for a month. I've swam through underwater caves, almost been killed by a falling boulder while glacier caving, experienced severe altitude sickness while climbing in the Himalayas, and suffered through heat exhaustion while running across countries. But my greatest struggle came many years after the war. I was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and consequently struggled with depression and alcohol addiction that drove me to the brink of suicide. I then spent years studying neuroscience, psychology and spirituality to not only heal my own brain, but figure out what does it take to live a happy, succesful and meaningful life. That is when I rejected the label of PTSD assigned to me and created a new one – Fearvana. I define Fearvana as the bliss that results from engaging our fears to pursue our own worthy struggle. I then wrote a book about the concept called “Fearvana: The Revolutionary Science of How to Turn Fear Into Health, Wealth and Happiness.”Flex Diet Podcast SponsorThis podcast is brought to you by the Physiologic Flexibility Certification course. What is "psychological safety" and how to create that environment in your organization: the future of work will require leaders to create psychological safety throughout their organization to drive connection and belonging. Bryon will discuss the innovation behind the culture at Rise8 that enables digital transformation in high compliance spaces. Psychological safety is an environment needed to improve the conventional workspaces (esp at the federal level) that limit creativity, community, and cohesion. "We have to move from a model of optimizing for being right with heavy investment and upfront planning to a model that optimizes for learning because it's the team that can bring together the people process and technology to learn the fastest that has the advantage. That means we have to hire people with a growth mindset and also create an environment where employees with a growth mindset can learn and thrive. That starts with decentralized autonomous teams that have a bias for action but can't have everyone taking off for the races without knowing where they're going" "Bureaucracies can be found in all kinds of organizations, not just government entities. In fact, bureaucracy and the problems that come with it can even be found in small businesses and teams when the group hits a certain size (hence Amazon's 2 pizza rule)." --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jay-feldman5/support

Colin is joined by leadership executive coach, chartered occupational psychologist, and certified business principle psychologist, Amanda Potter. Amanda discusses the concept of psychological safety, why it is crucial as a practice and how we can better equip managers to embrace it, as well as the importance of letting people's voices be heard. KEY TAKEAWAYS Psychological safety is something we must endeavour to better acquaint senior management with, but we must be careful so as not to overload or overwhelm, as embracing it is crucial. We rarely allow the least experienced of people to have their voices heard, especially in a meeting setting. It can be incredibly useful and empowering to allow these people to be heard. Psychologic al safety is, at its core, about feeling included, safe enough to make interpersonal risk, about making suggestions and being part of something important. The strongest part of the brain is constantly scanning our environment for potential threats. As it is responsible for our fight-or-flight, it causes a natural negativity bias. BEST MOMENTS 'When we feel safe, we're more likely to take interpersonal risk' 'It might give you an emotional reaction, a trigger that brings on impostor syndrome' 'Psychological safety is about feeling included' 'The better you get at it, the harder you have to work at it to maintain it' VALUABLE RESOURCES The Interesting Health & Safety Podcast - https://podcasts.apple.com/vn/podcast/the-interesting-health-safety-podcast/id1467771449 Project Mollitiam - https://www.projectmollitiam.com Be Talent - https://www.betalent.com/our-team# ABOUT THE HOST Colin Nottage ‘Making health and safety as important as everything else we do.' Let's talk about CRAVINGS. We are told to just "deal with it," "force it" or "harness willpower." But, that only takes us so far. Cravings have a way of persisting despite what we do... up until now! Here's a new way of thinking of things...Cravings are messages from the body. The body CRAVES that which it requires for survival; carbohydrates, aka "sugar!" Of course craving an apple is a little different than craving a piece of cheese cake. The recent COVID-19 pandemic forced us DDD practitioners to move our collaborative modelling efforts to the remote world. Within collaborative modelling, we want to share all the information we have, all the different perceptions, even if they might look weird, quirky or invalid at the start. Only then can we design and create enriched models to build sustainable and valuable software. The problem here is, people will only share all their information if there is psychological safety, and that is already hard in a physical session, let alone remote.

In this episode, I explore the latest evidence on the use of saline locks! A saline lock - sometimes called a “hep-lock” in reference to how it used to be used - is an intravenous (IV) catheter that is threaded into a peripheral vein, flushed with saline, and then capped off for later use. Nurses use saline locks to have easy access to the vein for potential injections. They can be useful in administering drugs as needed, and in the event of emergency surgery. What is the latest research on the use of saline locks in labor and delivery? What is the evidence for the saline lock in someone who wants an un-medicated birth or wants to avoid medical interventions as much as possible? Should a saline lock be in place “just in case” it may be needed? I’ll cover the evidence on this topic, along with the risks and benefits.
