This week's guest is Jeff Lubin; he's a nationally known Master Photographer, keynote speaker, a leader in the business and photography world, and an expert in sales. He's also owned one of the most successful studios in the country for over 38 years. Jeff is my mentor and the reason I had my online dating breakthrough. He's also given me some of the best advice in my life. In this episode, we discuss the ways relationships are just like running a business. There are many similarities, like the importance of your brand, your value, networking, connections, down to supply and demand. We also discuss unwritten rules, navigating the highs and lows, and why we should remain confident in our abilities. Jeff Lubin began with humble beginnings in a small studio with a window and a neon sign to becoming the leading portrait photographer in the Washington, D.C. area for nearly four decades. Some of his clients include Lynda Carter, Cal Ripken, Robert & Sheila Johnson, and Larry King. In 2017, The Lubin Studio was commissioned to create seven paintings to adorn the United States Court of Appeals for The Armed Forces work, which will display throughout history. Jeff's style has won him many national and state awards. He earned the coveted Master of Photography Degree from Professional Photographers of American in 1992, after only three years of competition. Katelyn has been married to her husband Michael for almost 10 years, and they are parents to Everly (Evy), Graham, and baby James in Heaven. When she was born, the dictator Idi Amin was President of Uganda and it was a very unstable and dangerous time in the country’s history. Even on the night she was born, there were many bombs in the city and her parents knew they had to get out and find better opportunities for their young family. When she was six months old, Petronella’s family moved to Kenya and continued to travel until they found better opportunities. Petronella grew up in Zimbabwe and when her dad found an amazing opportunity to persue his PhD in America. When she was 10 years old, she arrived in Birmingham, Alabama with her mom, sister, and two suitcases. As her family started figuring out life in America, Petronella’s parents knew they wanted to be sure their kids received a good education and enrolled Petronella in private school. There weren’t a lot of people who looked like Petronella at her school or in Birmingham. As a kid who really wanted to fit in, Petronella learned to hide certain parts of herself in order to assimilate and fit in. Petronella received both engineering and business degrees and entered the corporate world. It wasn’t until well after that journey that she realized she’d been hiding a lot of her background and culture that makes her unique. 13:42 – A Wedding in Mexico Petronella felt some pressure to enter a stable, “parent-approved” profession when she considered her career, but photography has always been a way for her to share her mind and heart. One of Petronella’s coworkers saw some of her photography and asked Petronella to come to Mexico to photograph her wedding. After that first wedding was published, Petronella quickly discovered a side of herself she wanted to explore more and slowly transitioned out of corporate America. She knew she had to find a way to make photography a career. Petronella received a blessing in disguise when she was laid off from her job. It gave her the permission she needed to fully focus on her photography business. Attending Lara Casey’s Making Things Happen Conference is where Petronella’s “pivot” began. Seeing someone else share her story of following a spark to something new made Petronella realize she wasn’t alone in her feelings of wanting to make a big change. These experiences allow Petronella to guide people through big life changes like blending two different family cultures into a wedding day as a new family begins a new life through marriage. 22:00 - Celebrating Cultures Through Love When we talk about something being “multicultural,”, it is to mean any situation where a person has to navigate two or more worlds on a daily basis whether interracial, biracial, interfaith, and/or being an immigrant. Petronella works closely with her clients to help them decide which parts of their culture and family details they actually want to incorporate and celebrate on their wedding day. Often tension can arise for multicultural cultures when their families also want them to incorporate family traditions and blending older traditions into a modern wedding. Kathy Thomas is AWESOME. We love talking to photographers on the podcast and we've had a few episodes with guests that are professional wedding photographers. Kathy has great advice for hiring a wedding photographer - stuff we haven't heard before. She even surprised us with some of her tips and tricks - specifically for couples heading to their initial consultation with a photographer. You know, the meeting where you decide if you want to hire this photographer or not! It's important! We talk a lot about how this decision isn't just about budget. There's more to it, much more, and Kathy is showing us the way...she's wise. We loved having her on the podcast. Kathy Thomas Photography began 5.5 years ago after Kathy moved from NYC to Orlando. She has been named one of the Top 3 photographers in Nashville, and only wedding photographer by Nashville Scene while also having been nominated twice for RangeFinder Magazine 30 Rising Stars of Wedding Photography Worldwide 2 years in a row. Kathy's photography is influenced by 17 years in luxury fashion retail. She brings her love for fashion, beauty, architecture and the art of craftsmanship into her wedding style. Big Takeaways A photographer's ‘ideal client' for weddings is a couple that trusts the photographer. Kathy knows she will be a great fit with the client when there is an immediate connection between her and the couple. You can't fake that connection. She takes the initial interview as a way to really get to know them. She is clear that a client (couple) has to let her in for the relationship to work, and the product to be what the client wants. Nashville is a cool mix for wedding styles - there are places that elicit pride for locals, or people raised in Nashville. There are historic venues, the music industry, high budget minimalistic wedding style, huge wedding parties and elaborate entertainment at weddings. You are HOSTING a wedding...implement the skills of your favorite hostess in life. How does a great party feel? How can you ensure that your wedding feels that way? In Nashville, the weddings are more traditional (and bigger) than other places in America...and a value is placed on the idea of ‘hosting' - people take pride in how a guest experiences the wedding weekend. Families are involved. Heirlooms and family traditions are present...and a photographer needs to know about these things so that they can make sure to shoot them! Pricing...we know it's vague with wedding vendors and we know that it's frustrating! Kathy has a starting price for packages that she is transparent about with clients upfront. Pricing can go up from there. In general, if a couple reaches out and the first thing they talk about is pricing, Kathy knows that they likely won't book her. Not a good fit. (Good rule of thumb...if the photographer you want is more than the event rental fee, you may not be able to afford that photographer.) An engagement session is important! It allows the photographer to get to know the couple. It helps to start with a cocktail! (She is not the first photographer that told us this.) But Kathy doesn't consider the engagement session totally necessary. But the face-time is what's really important. So if you aren't going to have an engagement session for some reason, make sure you at least get to have one face-to-face meeting with the photographer. You need this familiarity. Things you can ask your photographer (before you hire them!) And do a little research ahead of time so that you are prepared for different answers... * What camera equipment does she use? * How does she back up her files? * Does she bring extra equipment and backup batteries etc on the wedding day? * What's up with the assistant? Is the assistant a second shooter? Will Kathy review and oversee the assistant's photos after the event? Does the assistant have their own company? Can you see the assistant's work too? * Do you edit the photos or outsource that service? * How will the time be spent during the wedding day? (Like half and half with bride and groom each getting ready, for example) * Will you create a wedding day timeline for us? The important thing is to be forthcoming and honest! Today’s guest—who for many needs no introduction—is photographer Katelyn James. Katelyn started her photography business during her junior year of college and since then has shot hundreds of weddings alongside her husband Michael, and been featured in national publications such as The Knot, Southern Weddings, BRIDES and others. Beyond that, Katelyn has influenced the wedding photography industry in so many different ways—especially when it comes to marketing one’s business. No Plan B by David J. Carol was published by Peanut Press Books in 2017. The book is a retrospective of David’s work with 32 black and white images and an afterward by photojournalist Jason Eskenazi. No Plan B is a David’s fifth book and is a culmination of images from David’s road trips from the Arctic Ocean to post-Soviet Russia, from the Mojave Desert to the streets of Istanbul taken between 1993 and 2016. David was born in New York City, and attended the School of Visual Arts and The New School for Social Research, where he studied under Lisette Model. He was the first assignment photographer for The Image Bank photo agency (now part of Getty Images) at the age of 26. David has traveled the world taking pictures for himself and others for over thirty years. David is a photographer first and foremost, he has most recently worked daily in the real world of commercial photography as the Director of Photography at Outfront Media (formerly CBS Outdoor).
