She doesn't just teach leadership—she develops it. Her work has helped countless people who never saw themselves as leaders step into influence with confidence and purpose. Currently serving in a senior leadership role in one of the top school systems in the nation, Leslie leads a team of more than 600 people while helping create life-shaping experiences for thousands of students every day. Some people leave the battlefield… and build something even bigger. On this episode of The ToosDay Crüe, hosts Jake Holland and Stephen LaMonica sit down with US Navy Veteran Terry Weaver—a former Navy Corpsman who served alongside U.S. Marines in Kuwait and Iraq (2002–2003) as a combat medic. Terry's journey started in San Bernardino, California, and took him straight into war—where he experienced the realities of combat and the responsibility of keeping others alive. After his honorable discharge, Terry didn't slow down. He earned a degree from Texas A&M's Mays Business School, became a Pat Tillman Foundation Scholar, and later completed a Master's in Biblical Studies. But that's just the beginning. Terry has since: • Founded the nonprofit VEL Institute • Written five books • Built a career in sales and marketing • Become an award-winning actor • Produced multiple films • Written, produced, and directed his first feature film — “The Beast of Trinity Texas” Today, Terry is on a mission to inspire others through faith, creativity, storytelling, and leadership. This episode dives into combat, transition, purpose, faith, and what it takes to build something meaningful after service.
My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Terry Weaver. We are going to chat about the differences between writing a novel and writing a screen play. Terry grew up in San Bernardino, a suburb of Los Angeles, California. After graduating high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Military as a Navy Corpsman. He was deployed as a combat medic with the U.S. Marines and served a tour of duty in Kuwait and Iraq from 2002 to 2003. After five years of active duty, Terry received an honorable discharge. He attended Mays Business School at Texas A&M and received the Pat Tillman Foundation Scholarship, established in the namesake of Army Ranger and NFL star player Pat Tillman, who was killed in action while serving his country. Terry earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in 2011 and completed his Master of Arts in Biblical Studies in 2020 at Grace School of Theology. He spent over a decade in sales and marketing, and while doing so he founded VEL INSTITUTE, a 501 (c)(3) non-profit. Terry has published five books, two non-fiction and three fictional works. His latest book is titled A Long Night Cry. He's the award-winning lead actor in the television series, Breaking Strongholds. Additionally, he has acting credits and writing credits in television and narrative film and has produced multiple short films and commercials. In 2025, Terry wrote, produced and directed his first feature film titled The Beast of Trinity Texas, which is available to watch on Amazon and Tubi. He's happily married to Chelley Weaver. On this episode of Making Elephants Fly, Terry sits down with Derek Sivers. Derek Sivers is an entrepreneur, author, and TED speaker known for his unconventional wisdom, minimalist philosophy, and remarkably succinct writing style. Best known as the founder of CD Baby, Sivers started the company in 1998 simply to sell his own CDs online. What began as a side project for fellow independent musicians grew into the largest seller of independent music on the internet, generating more than $100 million in sales before he sold the company in 2008 for $22 million and donated the proceeds to charitable music education. A former musician, programmer, and circus clown, Sivers is the author of several bestselling books, including Anything You Want, Hell Yeah or No, How to Live, and Your Music and People. His work explores entrepreneurship, decision-making, creativity, leadership, and the dynamics that turn ideas into movements. Join Derek Sivers and Terry Weaver as they talk about unconventional paths to creativity, redefining success on your own terms, and building a life and business based on what truly matters to you. The big idea from this episode: You can choose your own path, say "hell yes or no" to opportunities, and design your life and work around your values, not what the algorithm or the marketplace expects. I will be speaking to Terry Weaver, filmmaker and the Executive Producer of The Beast of Trinity Texas. Terry told me he did not believe in Bigfoot before the film. While making the film he interviewed eyewitnesses who had seen the creature. It was during those interviews Terry said "These people are not lying, they saw something." The Beast of Trinity Texas – As a small town in East Texas unravels, murders point to evidence of a mythical beast. A war veteran turned sheriff and his team must navigate a web of deception spun by money, power, and greed in hopes of saving the people of Trinity. It is available now on Prime. I will also be speaking to Nadelle, who had an encounter in Washington State. She was staying at an Air B&B when a large create hit the side of the home waking her up. She said I just got a quick glance at it but it moved so quickly. Nadelle describes this low growl that shook her.
In this powerful and deeply moving episode, I sit down with my friend Terry Weaver to unpack one of the most terrifying and transformative experiences of his life. Terry opens up about surviving severe sepsis, an illness that landed him in the ICU for 10 days and very nearly cost him his life. What started as pushing through an important event quickly turned into a medical emergency that forced Terry to confront his own mortality in a very real way. We walk through the moments leading up to his hospitalization, including the pressure of hosting an event while feeling unwell and the warning signs that were easy to dismiss at the time. Terry shares what it was like inside the hospital, how quickly sepsis can take hold, and the reality of being told just how serious his condition was. This conversation sheds light on how fragile life truly is and how quickly everything can change. Beyond the medical crisis, this episode dives deep into what happens after you survive something that big. Terry reflects on how his near-death experience reshaped his definition of success, ambition, and productivity. We talk about the emotional toll of recovery, managing anxiety and racing thoughts late at night, and learning how to close mental open loops that keep us stuck in stress and fear. One of the most powerful themes of this conversation is community. Terry shares how the support of friends, family, and people he didn't even realize were paying attention carried him through the darkest moments. We explore the importance of deep relationships, showing up for others, and why real legacy has far more to do with connection than accomplishment. We also talk about gratitude in a way that feels earned, not performative. Terry shares how finding humor in difficult situations, letting go of what no longer matters, and embracing a new sense of freedom changed how he lives his life today. This episode is a reminder that success without health, connection, and presence is empty, and that the real work is learning how to live fully while we still can. In this episode, you will learn: What sepsis is and why it can become life threatening so quickly The warning signs of serious illness that are easy to ignore until it's too late How a near-death experience can completely redefine success and ambition Why community and support matter more than accomplishments during crisis Practical ways to manage anxiety, nighttime worries, and mental open loops How to reframe negative thoughts during recovery and high stress seasons Why gratitude becomes deeper and more meaningful after loss or trauma How humor and perspective can help you navigate even the darkest moments What it really means to build a lasting legacy rooted in relationships How to live with more presence, intention, and appreciation for life

Welcome to Game Changers with Jeff Newkirk, where we speak with people who have done something to make this world a better place. It's simple: inspire, educate, and let's change this world! On today's episode, Jeff welcomes returning guest Terry Weaver. To switch things up a bit, today, Terry will be conducting the interview so we can get to know more about Jeff. To begin, he shares that they have been working together as accountability partners since the beginning of this year when Jeff was at one of the toughest points of his life. Jeff has a Master of Business Administration and a Doctorate whose dissertation focused on studying management principles. He has over 30 years of experience running massive companies, made it to the VP of a major healthcare company, and has also been an athlete. Kicking off his story, Jeff shares that he grew up in a blue-collar neighborhood on the south side of Chicago. His father was a disciplinarian who was also very loving and compassionate and served as Jeff's mentor from an early age. His high school football coach was another major influence on him during his adolescence. He shares the story of losing his two best friends in a car accident at 13 years old and how that experience affected his life. He learned that the experience will always stick with him, so the most important thing is learning how to deal with it. Having spent so much time in the corporate environment, Jeff now has a strong passion for leadership. Leading and management, he explains, are not synonymous terms. Some of the best leaders Jeff has seen have been in non-management positions but have impacted a group of people toward positive progress in different ways. This kind of leadership is something we need more than ever right now in every facet of our lives. His call to action for listeners is to get involved and be vocal in any way they can. Then, he unpacks the idea that sometimes it's okay to offend other people to make progress. He offers the best example of good corporate leadership he saw in his career, which taught him the importance of communication. The conversation shifts to discussing the next step in Jeff's career in a business startup. Although his corporate career allowed him financial freedom, it wasn't until he had the chance to mentor someone else that he fulfilled his “why.” Now, Jeff's career is centered around helping others succeed. Before wrapping up, hear about what keeps Jeff going every morning. He truly believes that the best is yet to come for us if we genuinely believe that is the case. Finally, he shares his Christian faith's significance in finding accountability. Learn more about Jeff Newkirk. Do you have any game-changers in your life? The Importance of Investing in Community: "You know, everybody looks at the cost of going to a conference or going to an event or the cost of hiring a coach, the cost of joining a community. But no one considers the cost of what it would be like if you were the same person a year from now."— Terry Weaver I'm thrilled to announce that the latest episode of the Creative Chats podcast is a mashup with Terry Weaver's podcast, Making Elephants Fly! In this episode, Terry Weaver and I sit down for a thought-provoking conversation we had in Jamaica about creativity, community, and the shifts that have occurred in the past year. Here are the key takeaways from this conversation: 1️⃣ Expand Your Definition of Creativity: Creativity is not limited to visual art. It's about how you see the world and what you do as a result. Embrace different perspectives and include people from diverse backgrounds and interests. This opens up new avenues for collaboration and idea generation. 2️⃣ Build Authentic Connections: Community and relationships are vital for cultivating creativity. Find a community where you can be known, challenged, and encouraged. It's about creating a transformative experience and unlocking new possibilities together. Seek out events and gatherings that foster deep connections, like Terry Weaver's upcoming event, The Thing, happening November 3-5th 2023 in Orlando, Florida (use the code: CREATIVE for a discount), and the Mastermind at Sea! 3️⃣ Take Action and Embrace Scary Ideas: Creative ideas are like seeds—they need nurturing and growth to become something beautiful. Dream big and don't shy away from ideas that scare you. Taking action leads to stories of success while hesitating and overthinking hinder progress. Create a daily creative habit that allows you to consistently show up for your passion projects and explore new avenues of self-expression. Join the free Facebook community, "Daily Creative Habit," where you can connect with like-minded individuals and cultivate your creative journey. Make sure to subscribe to the "Daily Creative Habit" newsletter, delivered to your inbox, for inspiration and practical tips. Entrepreneurship can be many things: fulfilling, maddening, lucrative, demoralizing, exhilarating, lonely, etc., and community can help normalize the roller coaster ride. But simplification is the best tool to reduce chaos. That's why keying in on one thing at a time is such a valuable practice, and Terry Weaver has built an extraordinary community through events around that concept.Terry will be joining us on the next B2B Community Builder Live Show to talk about how he's built up his legendary "The Thing" event series and what he's been able to learn from this experience (and the experiences of his community) that can help you get unstuck as an entrepreneur, in your career, or even help you decide if entrepreneurship is for you. We're going to dive into topics like:- The one skill that seems to be most misunderstood and mislabeled for entrepreneurs: creativity- The one thing most entrepreneurs suffer with when it comes to having successful partnerships- The only thing that entrepreneurship guarantees (hardship), and the only way to know if you can handle it- and much more!Whether you want to know how to grow an event series, if you should quit, or how to take the next step, this will be a conversation you will want to be part of!Connect with Terry:On his LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/terrytheweaver/Connect with ME!Join us LIVE on the show: https://tinyurl.com/b2bcb2023Online at:LinkedIn or Instagram.Support the show

Terry Weaver, well-known author, actor, and advocate for strong leaders, stops by to discuss his journey to becoming a “game changer.” He will be the first to say that it is a journey. First, we must determine our purpose. Then, develop our goals. This effort should not be taken lightly, but with careful thought. You will be tested through this process. So, be sure to pack plenty of courage and perseverance. Are you ready to take on this challenge? Are you ready to make a difference? Do you have any game changers in your life? In this second installment of a 4-part series on 'grief,' host Marc Lee Shannon introduces us to his close friend, Terry Weaver. Terry recounts her 'magical' relationship with her husband, Jeff, and how a sudden lung cancer diagnosis sent shockwaves through her world and culminated in his death, after a short hospice stay. A shock to the system. Energy sapped. The loss of a spouse demands a different road to recovery. Marc and Terry discuss the propensity for 'America not allowing us to talk about grief.' Terry also looks back on 'opening the window' to allow the grief process to occur. It was a conscious decision for her to look up into the light and move forward and utilize the help available, to start a new volume that would propel her towards a deeper understanding of the recovery journey in the aftermath of loss.
