It's safe to say Heifetz's Giants had a bad week. But the guys couldn't spend the entire show laughing at the Giants. This episode celebrates Jane Asher - an extraordinary swimmer who, at age 95, is still breaking records in Masters swimming competitions. Jane, who swam as a young person, only returned to competitive swimming in her 50's and now holds over 100 world records. She particularly dominates in frontcrawl, backcrawl and the individual medley - which is all four strokes! This year, as she reaches the age of 95, she moves into a new age group, so is starting on her mission to break or set records in the 95-99 age group. She has also completed a number of open water swims including the Hellespont from Europe to Asia. Described by a fellow swimmer and competition host as “The true definition of an ELITE swimmer” * she has inspired many swimmers. She has heaps of awards and has been a member of the International Swimming Hall of Fame since 2006 as well as being awarded a British Empire Medal in 2018. Last year she entered the Swim England Hall of Fame too. As well as swimming and breaking world records she also coached and taught swimming. Growing up near Boston, Sugar discovered hiking in her early twenties while exploring the White Mountains of New Hampshire. After getting sober at 30, she found herself with the clarity, time and capacity to pursue the life she truly wanted. What followed was a decision to live authentically, prioritise long-distance hiking, and become what she proudly calls a professional dirtbag. In 2021, Sugar set out on the Appalachian Trail. While she knew she was a strong hiker, she also faced the uncertainty of what it would mean to walk the trail as a trans woman. Feeling the isolation of not seeing many stories like her own pushed her to begin writing, speaking openly, and becoming someone other queer and trans hikers could reach out to. Since then, she has become the first known trans woman to complete the Triple Crown of long-distance hiking, founded TrailQTs – a free mentoring programme supporting first-time queer and trans thru-hikers – and in 2024 pioneered the Divide to Crest Route, a 3,000-mile backcountry journey from the Mexican border in New Mexico to the Canadian border in Washington. In 2025, Sugar set a new women's self-supported speed record on the Appalachian Trail southbound, breaking the previous record by more than a day and a half. In this episode, we dive into sobriety, transition, representation, burnout, post-trail blues, building community, and what it really takes to push the body day after day. Sugar also shares practical advice on training, fuelling on a budget, protecting your feet, and why big dreams are built through small, steady steps. This is a conversation about courage, visibility, and creating the path you wish had existed when you started. *** New episodes of the Tough Girl Podcast drop every Tuesday at 7 AM (UK time). What does it take to jump into a war zone, break a world record, and still come home grounded? In this episode of The Jess Larsen Show, Jess sits down with former Tier 1 Special Boat Service operator Dean Stott to unpack a life that sounds like fiction—but isn't. Dean shares what it really means to pass one of the world's toughest special forces selections, why humility and integrity matter more than bravado, and how mindset separates those who quit from those who finish. He opens up about undercover missions, high-risk evacuations in Libya and Israel, and the moment a parachute accident ended his military career. Instead of spiraling, he reinvented himself—cycling 14,000 miles from Argentina to Alaska, breaking world records, and raising over $1.4 million for mental health. But this conversation goes deeper than adrenaline. It's about identity, purpose, discipline, and building a life that means something long after the medals fade. Learn more about your ad choices. Before joining the powerhouse Virginia Cavaliers, Bryn Greenwaldt was already making NCAA history — becoming the first woman in Division II to break 22 seconds in the 50 freestyle while also competing as an All-American high jumper. Now beginning her fifth year and first season in Division I swimming, Bryn brings a unique two-sport background, combining explosive athleticism with the mindset of a seasoned competitor. In this episode, she talks about her journey from Augustana University to UVA, how track and field training shaped her sprint power and underwaters, and what she's learning inside one of the nation's most dominant swim programs. It's an authentic, fun, and inspiring conversation about transitions, training culture, and finding balance in the grind — with one of the most intriguing new faces in college swimming.
Fresh off my self-supported AT record, I sit down with 2013 AT self-supported FKT holder Matt Kirk to talk about the weird gravity of post-trail depression, the long arc of the record from Ward Leonard to Stringbean to Tara, and where the line is with tech, tracking, and “help” on a self-supported effort. We dig into calories gone wrong (why 3,500/day failed), Shenandoah as a quiet crux, trail magic ethics, and why simplicity might be the best rule we have left. Matt shares the origin story of SCAR, naming it, and—plot twist—how he met his wife on the AT. I share some nuts and bolts from my run (18 mail drops, ~12 power banks, and way too much battery anxiety), and we both argue for screen-free campfire vibes and keeping the culture alive while the times keep dropping. If you're into FKTs, thru-hiking history, or just need a blueprint for surviving the “now what?” after a big goal, this one's for you.Check out Matt Kirk online:His Blog: https://matthewkirk.blogspot.com/His Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXrGFci8u_goKfnP8PqkaLADonate to the Trevor Project: https://give.thetrevorproject.org/fundraiser/6530749Chapters00:00 Post-Hike Transition and Emotional Challenges02:40 Caloric Miscalculations and Preparation for FKT05:31 Evolution of FKT Records and Technological Advances08:21 The Impact of Previous Record Holders10:48 Guidelines for Self-Supported Hiking13:28 Documenting the Journey: Technology and Tracking16:21 The Balance of Simplicity and Validation in Records19:02 Reflections on the Future of FKT Attempts27:13 Navigating Resupply Challenges32:58 Mental Strategies for Endurance37:13 The Importance of Reflection41:06 Journey into Ultrarunning and FKTs51:09 The Cost of Technology in Hiking54:15 Navigating Technology and Safety on the Trail56:42 The Impact of Technology on Hiking Culture01:00:18 The Balance of Trail Magic and Self-Sufficiency01:05:01 Personal Stories: Meeting on the TrailSubscribe to Substack: http://freeoutside.substack.comSupport this content on patreon: HTTP://patreon.com/freeoutsideBuy my book "Free Outside" on Amazon: https://amzn.to/39LpoSFEmail me to buy a signed copy of my book, "Free Outside" at jeff@freeoutside.comWatch the movie about setting the record on the Colorado Trail: https://tubitv.com/movies/100019916/free-outsideWebsite: www.Freeoutside.comInstagram: thefreeoutsidefacebook: www.facebook.com/freeoutside

David Rush, serial record breaker joins us to chat about his latest record he broke!
As Earth was thawing out at the end of the last ice age, it was hit by a powerful blast from the Sun. The storm would have triggered spectacular displays of the northern and southern lights. And it left an imprint in tree rings. Using that imprint, scientists have found that the storm was the most powerful yet recorded. And they even have a time for the event: the first quarter of the year 12,350 BC. Solar storms pelt Earth all the time. Most of the storms are small. But big ones can damage or destroy satellites, zap power systems on the ground, and cause other mischief. The biggest one ever seen took place in 1859. It knocked out telegraph systems around the world. But scientists have found evidence of even bigger events in the more-distant past. Some of the events are recorded in tree rings. Charged particles from the storms interact with Earth’s atmosphere to produce a radioactive form of carbon. Trees take up some of the carbon, which decays to a more stable form at a known rate. So comparing the ratio of carbon isotopes in tree rings can tell us when big storms took place. Researchers measured the carbon in rings from the end of the ice age. And they developed a new model of chemistry of the atmosphere during such cold periods. Their work showed that Earth was hit by the strongest solar storm yet discovered more than 14,000 years ago. More about space weather tomorrow. Script by Damond Benningfield
