For decades, conservatives treated unions like an economic flu—tolerable in small doses, but best avoided altogether. But starting with Trump's election in 2016, that narrative began to unravel, with prominent Republicans increasingly taking pro-union positions.Perhaps the most striking example was Teamsters President Sean O'Brien speaking at the 2024 Republican National Convention. Despite both parties courting working class voters, union membership has cratered to just 10%, down from over 20% in the early '80s.This puts the Trump administration in an interesting position. The old conservative playbook misses that many workers fueling this movement are now Republican voters. The question isn't just whether conservatives should oppose unions, but whether they can afford to.Joining today is Liya Palagashvili, Senior Research Fellow at the Mercatus Center, whose new paper "Do More Powerful Unions Generate Better Pro-Worker Outcomes?" examines these questions and argues for a moderate stance on unions.

listener comments? Feedback? Shoot us a text! Our sponsors: Arkeogato ToursShop AztlantisGO PREMIUM!Well, dear listeners, it happened. Like a super-shitty reboot of a failed TV show that nobody asked for, Donaldo Octavius Frump is back for season two. And like all shitty reboots, this one looks like it's just going to be more of the same: a rancid clown car of tired, racist, bullshit. Only this time he's brought along a friend, A similarly focused little troll who many think is pulling the strings. I'm referring to, of course, the world's richest and dumbest human being, Elon Musk. And the combined power of these pathetic clowns has already had disastrous effects. One of Ronald's primary campaign promises was the institution of a mass deportation program inspired by the infamous “Operation Wetback” of the 1950s. You know, that bygone era when America was “great.” This comes as no surprise really, as Trompito has publicly praised these Eisenhower-era immigration raids since he first ran for president way back in 2016. And leading up to the recent election, he only escalated his verbal attacks on immigrants, proclaiming to his sycophants and cultists that immigrants are “poisoning the blood of our country.”In fact, at the Republican National Convention this past July, he declared that "The Republican platform promises to launch the largest deportation operation in the history of our country," as his crowd of dipshit supporters held up signs bearing the phrase "mass deportation now!"He even directly referenced Operation Wetback way back in 2015 (he didn't identify it by its name at the time, but I'm sure we can look forward to the normalization of the word “Wetback” in the coming months.) Ronald stated, "You look back in the 1950s, you look back at the Eisenhower administration, take a look at what they did, and it worked.” But did it work? Historians say the program tore families apart, violated civil rights — and at times, turned deadly. And yeah, I would be remiss if I didn't mention that former President Barack Obama earned the title of “deporter-in-chief” for overseeing the deportation of 3 million plus individuals, 2/3 of which had no criminal record. But he ain't gonna be President again, and we need to prepare ourselves for the shitshow on the immediate horizon. So with that, dear listeners, we here at the Tales From Aztlantis Podcast thought it would be prudent to take a look at Operation Wetback and its precursor the Bracero Program. Send us a textIn this episode we take you through the events of three of the days of the Republican National Convention as George Bush prepares to take the stage and address the nation. He is greeted by hecklers at a Houston event who snuck in as reporters from an AIDS activist group. But the President and the crowd handle it fairly well. Despite all the issues that seemed to have beset the campaign and the convention, the message and the record George Bush had to run on was finally taking hold and the giant lead Bill Clinton had was starting to shrink. This is also the end of an era of long speeches by former Presidents at least on the Republican side of the aisle. In this episode, we hear the last prime time address given by former President Gerald Ford as he compares the scenario the party faces in 1992 to the last successful Democrat to argue it was time for change, Jimmy Carter, during the election he lost by a whisker in 1976. Plus, this election actually produced a very unlikely star, the much maligned Vice President of the United States, Dan Quayle. It is often forgotten that starting with this convention speech, Dan Quayle actually did an outstanding job campaigning for re-election through out all of the 1992 campaign. In fact, I have often wondered how it would have gone had he been head to head with Bill Clinton given how well he did do in 1992. That story has often been obscured by the election loss of the Bush/Quayle ticket later in the year. You will get to hear both the Quayle video and his convention speech in this episode.  Questions or comments at , Randalrgw1@aol.com , https://twitter.com/randal_wallace , and http://www.randalwallace.com/Please Leave us a review at wherever you get your podcastsThanks for listening!!

Send us a textThis is a speech delivered just barely in Primetime that slipped into the 11pm hour. Arguably the single biggest mistake ever made by schedulers in the history of prime time political conventions. It is from day 1 of the 1992 Republican National Convention. It was a convention that had a lot of political battles in it between the conservative wing and the establishment wing of the Republican Party. Our nominee was in serious trouble , ands many members of Congress stayed away rather than allow themselves to be pictured in attendence. You could say it was one of those situations where if it could go wrong it did in 1992. However, this speech was the single best speech I have ever heard. I remember being mesmerized by it and by the man who made it. This was the last prime time address given by former President Ronald Reagan. It is everything you would ever want in a speech by the greatest leader of the era. Optimistic, visionary, and inspiring, it had everything a young person, like me who had just turned 21 the day before, could ever want to be inspired by. That was the magic of Ronald Reagan, if you are too young to remember it, or if you have forgotten that night, here is your chance to relive it again, as it occured in Houston, Texas. When Mary Fisher was diagnosed with HIV in 1991 she did not represent the typical stereotype of someone HIV-positive. She was white, heterosexual and contracted the disease in marriage. She used her platform at the Republican National Convention in Texas in 1992 to try and change people's treatment of those carrying the Aids virus. The speech was broadcast live to millions of people via the major US TV outlets. She argued that she did not want her sons, aged four and two, to face stigma from the "whisper of Aids" once she had died. It is ranked as one of the most important speeches in the US in the 20th Century. Mary Fisher recalls the moment she delivered the speech to Josephine McDermott.Eye-witness accounts brought to life by archive. Witness History is for those fascinated by the past. We take you to the events that have shaped our world through the eyes of the people who were there. For nine minutes every day, we take you back in time and all over the world, to examine wars, coups, scientific discoveries, cultural moments and much more. Recent episodes explore everything from football in Brazil, the history of the ‘Indian Titanic' and the invention of air fryers, to Public Enemy's Fight The Power, subway art and the political crisis in Georgia. We look at the lives of some of the most famous leaders, artists, scientists and personalities in history, including: visionary architect Antoni Gaudi and the design of the Sagrada Familia; Michael Jordan and his bespoke Nike trainers; Princess Diana at the Taj Mahal; and Görel Hanser, manager of legendary Swedish pop band Abba on the influence they've had on the music industry. You can learn all about fascinating and surprising stories, such as the time an Iraqi journalist hurled his shoes at the President of the United States in protest of America's occupation of Iraq; the creation of the Hollywood commercial that changed advertising forever; and the ascent of the first Aboriginal MP.(Photo: Mary Fisher delivers her speech in 1992. We will go first to the morning session and hear from a list of Republican candidates for Congress as they try to "Bounce the House" after the Democrats get themselves in gulfed in a house banking scandal where several of the members bounced hundreds of the thousands of dollars in checks on the House bank. We will hear from former Congressman Tommy Hartnett who challenged my State's long time Senator Ernest Hollings in 1992. It was the first race where I was selected to chair the campaign at my little college in Greenwood S.C. While I never met Mr. Hartnett, I had a lot of fun, and enjoyed listening to him and Ernest Hollings battle it out with thick Charleston, South Carolina accents. This is the first of a couple of episodes that will feature this 1992 Senate Race. Then we will hear from former candidate Pat Buchanan as he electrifies the convention with a tough , conservative speech about the culture wars in America. It was , often, very accurate in substance, but it gave a much meaner look to conservatism than the man who would walk on to the podium just after him and out of prime time. Send us a textIt is just days before the Republican National Convention and the campaign of George H. W. Bush is losing, badly. It appears unfocused and seems to be reacting to events instead of controlling them or leading them. The worsening economy has the argument for change being made by Bill Clinton stronger with each passing day. Finally, Ross Perot decided to withdraw and did so on the last night of the 1992 Democratic National Convention delivering for Governor Clinton an enormously huge audience to listen to his acceptance speech. One of the problems is that George Bush is without two of his most trusted political advisors. Lee Atwater, the native South Carolinian, who had helped guide Bush to the Presidency had died of brain cancer, and James Baker, his former campaign manager, had moved on to the job of Secretary of State. Bush needed them badly and he finally went to James Baker and asked him to take over the campaign for that final stretch. James Baker was, as James Carville once said of him, "the Joe Montana of American Politics" (Montana is a widely heralded Super Bowl MVP Quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers) Baker arrived in Washington D.C. when his friend George Bush had moved from Texas in the early 1970s.  He got a job working for President Gerald Ford in 1975. He then moved over and almost pulled off one of the greatest comebacks in political history moving Ford from 33% points down to only losing by one in 1976 to Jimmy Carter. He took Bush from an asterisk in the polls to almost wrestling away the 1980 nomination from Ronald Reagan, he then helped guide the Reagan Presidency in its first term, was Secretary of State to Bush as they soft landed the Cold War, and now Bush was calling him back in to pull off yet another miracle and get him re-elected to the Presidency. As you will see, it almost worked, if not for the Sinister forces of a Special Prosecutor. Here is the story of James Baker stepping back in to take over the 1992 campaign of George H. W. Bush, on the eve of the 1992 Republican National Convention.  Questions or comments at , Randalrgw1@aol.com , https://twitter.com/randal_wallace , and http://www.randalwallace.com/Please Leave us a review at wherever you get your podcastsThanks for listening!!

Trance Formation of America with Cathy O'Brien

I am often asked what I think of Lee Greenwood's song “God Bless the USA” since he is mentioned in TRANCE Formation of America pgs.151-152 and again on p.170. Despite all that I experienced with Lee Greenwood, I still like aspects of “God Bless the USA” because I do love our country, its natural beauty, and the resiliency of We the People. Besides, I know a lot more about the origin of that song that I will share in a moment. When I see Lee Greenwood's presence at Trump rallies, I do wonder if he knows anything about Greenwood's past. Or if he simply enjoys the song like I do. I appreciate President Trump for all he has done to wake people up to the reality of the Wash DC swamp and its funding mechanism of drug and human trafficking across open borders, yet I do not agree with him on all things. Why should I? Human beings are all on their own learning path.Did Lee Greenwood learn something that restored his moral compass? Anyone with a soul has the capacity to grow and change, and therefore I focus my personal judgments on information rather than on people.President Ronald Reagan is a profound example. Reagan was deeply traumatized from the assassination attempt on him, and never regained control over himself or his Administration from that point on. George Bush and Dick Cheney ran his Administration and treated him horribly that I witnessed. In my 1995 testimony for Congress TRANCE Formation of America, National Security demands forbid me from asserting my perception of what went on behind the seen. Instead, I could only tell exactly what happened that had been validated. Details in TRANCE are what happened to me, Reagan, and others. What happens to us is not who we are. I was at Swiss Villa Amphitheater in Lampe, Missouri when Lee Greenwood was there due to his involvement in Bill Clinton's CIA cocaine ops running through the country music industry. In 1983-84 Nashville's country music industry was extending to Branson to be in closer proximity to Bill Clinton's Mena cocaine operation and the Swiss Villa Amphitheater compound. Greenwood was friends with both Bush and Clinton back then, and also sang at Bohemian Grove's UNderground.  (p.170 TRANCE)It was my experience that Greenwood was so heavily involved in the cocaine industry that he was granted a boost to his country music career cover. Greenwood already had been given access to sophisticated NASA/DARPA harmonics, which Bush wanted used at the1984 Republican National Convention.President Ronald Reagan had been outspoken in his desire to change our National Anthem from the Star Spangled Banner to the old 1911 version of America the Beautiful. He had asserted that the majestic beauty of our nation would be more patriotically inspiring than war, which was a point of view we shared.  Lee Greenwood's song “God Bless the USA” was originally written in accordance with Reagan's patriotic preference and was released in 1984 to be used in the Republican National Convention for the re-election of Reagan-Bush. The rest is history, and history in the making today. I've often wondered what Reagan would have done for our country had he been in control of his Administration. What free will choices would he have made? Having lost my free thought/free will to CIA MK Ultra mind control the first 30 years of my life, I have deep appreciation and gratitude for my freedom today. Depth of insight compound the meaning of “God Bless the USA” when I hear it at a Trump rally, especially knowing what it meant to Reagan.  Perhaps President Trump is aware of that, too.

On Wednesday, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean Pierre flatly denied Biden ever called Trump supporters garbage. Judge Jeffrey Trauger said in a one-page order that Bucks County voters who want to apply for an early mail ballot now have until Friday at 5 p.m. The Trump campaign's lawsuit, which was filed Wednesday morning, comes amid a flurry of litigation and complaints over voting in a battleground state that is expected to play a central role in helping select the next president in 2024's election.” You can read more here: https://6abc.com/trump-campaign-sues-pennsylvanias-bucks-county-board-elections-claims-turned-away-voters/15488664/ 4:10pm- Rich gets distracted—he starts by complaining about the YouTube graphic making him look fat, but the conversation quickly turns to making homemade mozzarella cheese AND Matt and Justin both having fake girlfriends. 4:20pm- Are Polls Undercounting Kamala Harris? Tucker Carlson is perhaps the country's most influential conservative commentator; his eponymous podcast is routinely among the most downloaded shows on the internet. Despite his endless fulminations against the mainstream media, Carlson has an impeccable mainstream media pedigree. He's hit for the cycle on cable news, having hosted shows on Fox, MSNBC, and CNN. After he was fired from Fox News in 2023, under circumstances that are still hotly disputed, Carlson quickly reconstituted his career on his own—free of corporate shackles, with no institutional guardrails, and with a professed willingness to explore topics that his former mainstream media colleagues wouldn't touch. Last week on his show, he did just that, airing an interview with a man most people in the mainstream won't touch: a podcaster named Darryl Cooper, who Carlson called “the most important historian in the United States.” In reality, Cooper is an amateur historian with no publishing record—no books, no academic articles. He produces a popular history podcast called Martyr Made, in which he does deep dives into subjects like the Israel-Palestine conflict, the cult of Reverend Jim Jones, and the trials of Jeffrey Epstein. He has previously described his personal politics as those of a “non-racist fascist.” On Carlson's show, Cooper demonstrated some of those fascist tendencies when he identified Winston Churchill—not Adolf Hitler—as the “chief villain” of World War II. He wasn't a hero at all, Cooper argued, but a “psychopath” who forced Nazi Germany into a war that it didn't want. And what of the Holocaust? Cooper doesn't speak of Jewish victims, but vaguely and airily of “prisoners of war. . . local political prisoners and so forth” who the Nazis “just threw. . . into camps, and millions of people ended up dead.”  In September 1941, a mere week after Nazi troops occupied the Ukrainian capital of Kiev, that city's Jews were ordered to congregate for “resettlement.” Under threat of severe punishment, they obliged. . . and were loaded into trucks to be transported a short distance to Babi Yar, a ravine just north of the city. In a two-day orgy of violence, 33,000 Jews ended up dead. Innocents, not prisoners of war; children forced to lie on top of those pushed into the pit before them, then executed with a bullet in the back of the head. This is how they ended up dead. Tucker Carlson, who has the ear of millions of conservatives, including Donald Trump, and who secured a prime time speaking spot at the Republican National Convention, said nothing in response to Cooper's revisionism. No pushback. Not an arched eyebrow. Just unalloyed praise for an extremist autodidact, America's “best” historian. Cooper defended himself on Twitter by assuring his critics that Hitler was indeed desperate to make peace and was also willing to “work with the other powers to reach an acceptable solution to the Jewish problem.” Jewish problem was not in quotes. When another user pointed this out, Cooper responded: “Was there not a problem involving the Jews in Europe at the time?” Hitler apologia and antisemitism packaged as brave historical inquiry is not new. We've heard versions of these arguments from cranks, extremists, and anti-Americans on the left and right, for decades. But why is there a sudden resurgence of these odious ideas on the American right?  Today, we talk to Victor Davis Hanson to help us answer this question. Hanson is a classicist and historian, the author of two dozen books, including the critically acclaimed The Second World Wars: How the First Global Conflict Was Fought and Won. And for years, Hanson was a weekly guest on Tucker Carlson's television show. We discuss his relationship with Carlson, the accuracy and derivation of Darryl Cooper's claims about the Second World War, and why so-called “anti-elitism” often drifts into antisemitism. From the DNC: Meet the Kamala Democrats

In the 1972 presidential election, Democratic candidate George McGovern was soundly defeated by Richard Nixon. It was a bloodbath. He lost 49 states, a result widely attributed to his positions being “too liberal” for the American mainstream. Four decades later, in a more liberal America, McGovern released a book called What It Means to Be a Democrat, outlining core values that define the Democratic Party. Because, he argued, in his day, during the “1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. . . it was obvious that a spirit of wide embrace was missing both inside and outside the convention hall.” The party had “splintered” into warring factions. This, McGovern argued, could never be allowed to happen again. Here we are again, 50-plus years later, back in Chicago, back at the Democratic National Convention. There's the version that's inside. And there's the one that's outside, with left-wing demonstrators in the streets demanding the party forcefully oppose Israel's war in Gaza, beseeching Democrats to somehow precipitate an end to capitalism and support various other identity-related progressive causes. They marched and shouted, faces swaddled in N95 masks or tightly wrapped with keffiyehs, beneath a sea of Palestinian flags, punctuated by the occasional hammer and sickle. There was only one American flag to be found—a prop to be doused in lighter fluid and set alight.  Inside the convention hall, we passed countless people in red, white, and blue dresses and jackets and hats, while volunteers handed out signs that simply read “USA.” And while all those stuffed into Chicago's United Center seemed energized by the Kamala coronation, we found divergent views on what it means to be a Democrat. At the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee last month, there were no divergent views. No Never-Trumpers. No holdout Nikki Haley supporters. No contingent of free-traders, tax-cutters, or libertarians. The MAGA faction had fully purged the dissenters. A recent CBS News/YouGov poll found that while 86 percent of registered voters said they knew what Donald Trump stood for, that number fell to 64 percent when the same question was asked about Kamala Harris. Some of this can be attributed to her many policy flip-flops, some to her decision to avoid almost all interaction with media. . . and some to the Democrats' emphasis on vibes over policy.  So we came to Chicago to ask the question: What does it mean, in 2024, to be a Democrat?  Header 6: The Free Press earns a commission from all qualifying purchases made through book links in this article, including as an Amazon Associate.  Learn more about your ad choices. A strange new gender politics is roiling the 2024 election. At the Republican National Convention, Donald Trump made his nomination a show of campy masculinity, with Hulk Hogan, Kid Rock and Dana White, the president of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, warming up the crowd. JD Vance's first viral moments have been comments he made in 2021 about “childless cat ladies” running the Democratic Party and a “thought experiment” assigning extra votes to parents because they have more of an “investment in the future of this country.” Meanwhile, Kamala Harris is centering her campaign on abortion rights, and Tim Walz has been playing up his own classically masculine profile — as a former football coach, hunter and Midwestern dad.  What are the two sides here really saying about gender and family? And what are the new fault lines of our modern-day gender wars?Christine Emba is a staff writer at The Atlantic and the author of “Rethinking Sex: A Provocation.” Zack Beauchamp is a senior correspondent at Vox and the author of the new book “The Reactionary Spirit: How America's Most Insidious Political Tradition Swept the World.” In this conversation, we discuss some influences on JD Vance's ideas about gender and family, the tensions between those ideas and the beliefs about gender represented by Donald Trump, the competing visions of masculinity presented by the two parties in this election, how Dobbs changed Democrats' message on gender and family, and more.Mentioned:“A Powerful Theory of Why the Far Right Is Thriving Across the Globe” with Pippa Norris on The Ezra Klein ShowBook Recommendations:Black Pill by Elle ReeveWhat Are Children For? by Anastasia Berg and Rachel WisemanThe Lord of the Rings trilogy by J.R.R.
