Today I'm publishing an archival episode with Reza Aslan, who called my book Exvangelical & Beyond "[a]n insightful exploration of faith, identity, and activism in a nation at the crossroads of religious fervor and social change…At once alarming and hopeful, this is a book that every American must read, regardless of religious affiliation.” Exvangelical & Beyond is available in stores now! Check out my newsletter, which links to all my recent appearances. In the season 1 finale of Powers & Principalities (originally published on 11/30/2020), I spoke with Reza Aslan about what we've learned about the United States during the Trump administration. In particular, we discussed what it means that 70 million Americans voted for Trump to be re-elected, the cult-like characteristics of Trumpism, the 'geography of identity' of Trumpism, the role of the media, and much more. Reza Aslan is author of several books, including God: A Human History, Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth, and Beyond Fundamentalism. He is also Professor of Creative Writing at the University of California, Riverside and executive producer of Rough Draft with Reza Aslan and the CNN documentary series, Believer. Glenn also talks about how he derives meaning in life and his religious ambivalence. He shares his deep love for his wife in spite of political differences between them. When Peter asks Glenn about his hopes for his grandchildren, Glenn shares words of wisdom that reveal his deepest values. Doth Protest Too Much: A Protestant Historical-Theology Podcast
"When you make blanket statements, you end up being smothered by that blanket." What an insightful quote from our very own: Rev. James Rickenbaker. Today, two Episcopal Priests and a Lutheran pastor break down the problems they find with a meme that seems to get shared virally every time Easter comes around. A meme (pictured in the episode artwork and in our show description) that makes, what we ultimately believe, are false dichotomies. Joining Rev's Andrew and James on this episode of Doth Protest is our friend Rev. Connor Longaphie from Transcendent Truth Media- a multi-media network of Confessional Lutheran pastors and theologians. Visit Transcendent Truth at https://transcendenttruthmedia.com/ Enjoy! Rainn Wilson and Reza Aslan are my guests on today's Dear Gabby. These brilliant guys cohost Metaphysical Milkshake … and that's an apt description for our Big Talk! We cover so much ground here, including how to infuse spirituality into every aspect of your life, how to be your own guru, and how to make joy the throughline that integrates everything you do. From philosophy to religion to the spiritual side of Dwight Schrute, it's all in this Big Talk. This Big Talk covers so much ground. You'll hear us talk about: Using joy as a throughline to integrate every part of your life—even if you're on a slightly scary Uber ride. I'll share how I turned an uncomfortable moment into an opportunity for joy. Demystifying what it means to be a person of faith. As Reza said, “Living a spiritual life is an active choice—there's nothing magical about it. Being a person of faith is a decision that you make.” The power of humility. I love what Rainn said about humbling ourselves to pray: “Prayer is an ability to say I need help. And there is a beautiful, bountiful, power coursing through this Universe that can help me along my journey—if I attune to it.” How to approach therapy as a spiritual practice. (I LOVE what Rainn had to say about this!) Why service to others is integral to spiritual growth. “You can't just sit in your walled garden and become more spiritual staring at a tree or a crystal with some incense burning,” Rainn said. True spirituality also means “Serving others, connecting with others, trying to make the world a better place,” RESOURCES The following are helpful resources and books I mention in the episode. ABOUT RAINN WILSON & REZA ASLAN: Rainn Wilson is an actor (you might know him as Dwight Schrute from The Office), a comedian, and the New York Times bestselling author of The Bassoon King: My Life in Art, Faith, and Idiocy. I wish you and your loved ones a deeply renewing holiday season. This week, you'll hear my 2014 conversation with REZA ASLAN about his best-selling book, ZEALOT: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth. He examines Jesus the man through the lens of the time and place in which he lived, first-century Palestine, and labels him a zealot – a radical political opponent of the Roman occupation. Since Jesus was crucified without overthrowing Roman rule, he is one of many "failed messiahs." But only he among them become the starting point of one of the world's great religions. This approach offers a Jesus more human, if no less heroic.

Religion is an important part of the lives of billions of people around the world, but what religious belief actually amounts to can vary considerably from person to person. Some believe in an anthropomorphic, judgmental God; others conceive of God as more transcendent and conceptual; some are animists who attribute spiritual essence to creatures and objects; and many more. I talk with writer and religious scholar Reza Aslan about his view of religion as a vocabulary constructed by human beings to express a connection with something beyond the physical world — why one might think that, and what it implies about how we should go about living our lives.Support Mindscape on Patreon.Reza Aslan received his Ph.D. in sociology from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Me and Reza get well into it with God. We talk about Jesus, Muhammad and Buddha and their similarities. Did the institutions that follow them behave in a comparable way? Does the divine message when it comes through get institutionalised and turned into a materialistic ideology? We speak about the effect globalisation has had on identity and the way we view ourselves and others in the world. We dig deep. There is literally no small talk. Let us know what you thought of it on social media!Reza is an internationally renowned scholar of religion and writer whose books include the #1 New York Times Bestseller, "Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth," and the International Bestseller, "No god but God: The Origins, Evolution, and Future of Islam.”

Reza Aslan is the guest on this week's episode of The Chauncey DeVega Show. He is the author of numerous books including the New York Times-bestseller "Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth" as well as "No god but God". Reza was also the host of the CNN documentary TV series "Believer". During this episode of The Chauncey DeVega Show, Reza and Chauncey discuss Donald Trump's hold over white right-wing evangelical Christians and how they are acting like a religious-political cult in the service of Trump and the Republican Party. Reza also explains the role of racism and greed in how white right-wing Christian evangelicals came to be so corrupt and hypocritical in their overwhelmingly loyalty to Donald Trump. Ed Simon also stops by the virtual bar and salon this week. He is a contributing writer for such publications as Newsweek, The Washington Post, The Atlantic, and Jacobin. Ed explains how white right-wing Christian evangelicals misread the Bible, warns about being dismissive of white right-wing evangelicals as just being "stupid" and "hypocrites" and sounds the alarm about the threat posed to America's secular democracy by Christian Nationalists. In this week's episode Chauncey DeVega reflects on the passing of the great James Cone and how his amazing scholarship resonates as a warning against the culture of cruelty, racism, and hatred of the poor as manifest in how white right-wing Christians support Donald Trump and want to destroy the social safety net as well as any vestiges of a humane society. Chauncey also shares his thoughts on the new Avengers: Infinity War movie. And at the end of this week podcast Chauncey channels the late great Art Bell and shares some new information about the United States government's secret "psycho-electric" mind control weapons.

Welcome to “Bible Study for Progressives,” a show where moderates, liberals, and leftists of all faiths and ideologies come together to discuss scripture, spirituality, and politics. Today we will talk about the conflict Paul had with Peter and James over circumcision and the Law. Using the research of Reza Aslan, from his book "Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth," we trace the conflict and consider the tolerant and universal nature of Paul's response. We will also consider Paul’s answer to division and prejudice. Early Christianity was no model of unity or coherence in matters of doctrine. Christianity was more diverse than today. Can we simply tell people, as Paul does, not to despise or condemn one another and then expect them to do it? Our nation is divided. Americans are attacking one another. Attacks on minorities, transgendered persons, migrants, and Muslims are attacks on fellow Americans, and the right is not the only one dividing us. Identity politics is dividing us, too. The focus on our differences and organizing around things like race and ideology foster separatism and extremism. Come as we discuss early Christian divisions and Paul's solution to prejudice and division. Then we will apply those lessons to current events. Religious scholar Reza Aslan spent twenty years researching Jesus, the bible and historical documents to write his latest New York Times bestseller "Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth." While the book is quite popular, it’s also spawned some heated, televised debates. Aslan became an evangelical Christian after moving from Iran to the US as a child. Today, he’s reverted back to Islam, but still calls Jesus his “hero.” Join us as he describes the journey he took to write this intriguing book and reveal some inconsistencies between the historical and biblical Jesus.

Aired: 03/09/14 Last summer author and scholar of religions REZA ASLAN came out with a book that utilized a great deal of historical research to give readers a sense of the man, Jesus of Nazareth. ASLAN had taken on a similar task seven years earlier with his first book NO GOD BUT GOD, in which he tells the story of Mohammed. But the problem for some folks this time around is that Reza Aslan is a Muslim. In an interview that has been viewed at least a million and a half times on YouTube, Lauren Green of Fox News demanded to know, "You're a Muslim, so why did you write a book about the founder of Christianity?" - and that interview sent Aslan's book, ZEALOT: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth, to the top of best-seller lists for weeks. REZA ASLAN has been a guest on Free Forum a number of times in the past, and I'm happy to welcome him back again, to talk a bit about the reaction, but much more about the content and meaning of his book. He examines Jesus through the lens of the time and place in which he lived, first-century Palestine, and labels him in the book's title, a zealot - a radical political opponent of the Roman occupation. Because Jesus was crucified without overthrowing Roman rule, he is one of many failed messiahs. But why did this particular failed messiah become the starting point of one of the world's great religions, wielding enormous influence over two thousand years later among more people than even existed during his lifetime?
This podcast is a review of "Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth" by Reza Aslan.
“JESUS: SUPERSTAR, SUPERHERO OR SON OF GOD?” What Do I Stand For? September 22, 2013 Cornerstone Community Church Every few years a new book comes out purporting to reveal who Jesus really was and is. The latest such book is called “Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth” by Reza Aslan. Aslan has been on quite a number of news shows promoting his book – Fox News, CNN and even The Daily Show on Comedy Central, which is where I first saw him. And in that interview Aslan explained to a cheering audience that it’s crucial that we separate the Jesus of history from the Christ of faith. In other words, Aslan contends that the New Testament writers get Jesus all wrong. Jesus is not, as Christians claim, God in the flesh. Rather, the Jesus of history was a member of a political movement called the Zealots who was intent on overthrowing the Romans and who got himself killed for just that reason. Interestingly, although the book is a best seller, scholar after scholar has pointed out the many historical errors Aslan makes. My favorite critique of the book comes not from a Christian scholar but from the “Jewish Review of Books,” which titles its review “What Jesus Wasn’t: Zealot.” When Jewish scholars come out and say that a writer has completely missed what the Gospels teach about who Jesus was, it’s pretty hard to take that writer seriously. One last point that should have been a tipoff about Aslan’s work – he’s not, by profession, an historian; in fact, he’s a professor of creative writing.
"Gentle Jesus, Meek and Mild" is not Reza Aslan's Jesus. Professor Aslan has discovered a Jesus who is a revolutionary, a zealot, and who had a mission that was political and practical. Aslan's book, Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth became a number one bestseller thanks to this attack interview on Fox News that went viral. In this candid and in depth conversation, Dr. Aslan reveals a Jesus more like Malcom X than Martin Luther King and worth following regardless of one's religion.
Christians in the United States and around the world have varying images of Jesus, from one who turns the other cheek to one who brings the sword. Reza Aslan, in his highly popular and beautifully written new book Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth (Random House, 2013), approaches Jesus by first taking the context in which he lived – first-century Palestine – quite seriously. Aslan argues that Jesus' time was one awash in a fervent nationalism that is important for understanding the man as well as his message. It is not a book about the Jesus of the Gospels. Indeed it is not even a book about Christianity. Rather, Aslan's book attempts to grapple with how Jesus understood himself and his role during a volatile period in history. Zealot has shot to the best seller lists in recent weeks, partly due to a controversial interview Reza Aslan gave to Fox News during which he was questioned about why a Muslim would be interested in writing a book about the founder of Christianity. We also talk to Reza about his earlier books, No god but God and How to Win a Cosmic War, as well as his two edited collections, Tablet & Pen and Muslims and Jews in America. We talk to him about growing up Iranian, while pretending to be Mexican, in the United States during the 1980s, about graduate school, about Fox News and Islamophobia, and about writing for a popular audience, being a public intellectual, and the challenges involved with such endeavors. Fr. Lawrence Farley reviews Reza Aslan’s book Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth, calling it "a tired rewriting of the same nonsense that pseudo-scholars have been churning out for some time now."
It is the job of historians and scholars to take new and contemporary information and give context and connection to events far beyond the time in which they happened. This is as true for wars, as it is for the story of Jesus. Thus it is no accident that for over 2000 years, every word every written about Jesus was written by people that did not know him when he was alive. It’s significant to note that this was as true in the twenty years after his death, as it is today. Only today we have a broader compendium of knowledge from which to draw on and a keener understanding of the historical context. With respect to the Jesus story, this makes it easier in some ways to separate out the religious Jesus from the historical Jesus and in so doing, better understand the origins of Christianity, in its birth time, and as it has evolved for over 2000 years.Few do this better than writer and scholar Reza Aslan. The internationally acclaimed author of No God But God, has now written Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth. My conversation with Reza Aslan:
