Research is so critical to the field of surgery worldwide. But how does the world of academic surgery compare in the UK? Join BTK fellow Jon Williams and ASGBI partner Jared Wohlgemut  for another installment of our BTK/ASGBI collaborative series where we take a deep dive investigating the many facets of surgical research–everything from getting started, funding, collaboration, mentorship, and sage advice from two incredibly successful academic surgeons. Professor Susan Moug represents the UK while Dr. Lesly Dossett represents the US in this excellent episode for any trainee or surgeon who is academically-inclined. After listening, you get to decide–who does it better?? UK or US? Professor Moug is an Honorary Professor at the University of Glasgow, Scotland. She is a Consultant Colorectal and Robotic surgeon at Golden Jubilee National University Hospital in Clydebank, and at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley, Scotland. She is also the Director of Research for the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland since 2021, and the Surgical Specialty Lead for Colorectal Research at the Royal College of Surgeons of England. She has been awarded a Senior Fellowship from the Chief Scientist Office of the Scottish Government, and was the chief investigator for the Emergency Laparotomy in Frailty multicentre study, and the No-Laps follow-on study. Essentially, she is one of the leading researchers in emergency surgery in the UK, having been awarded over 1 million in grant funding for this under-researched and underfunded area. Dr. Dossett is an associate professor and surgical oncologist at the University of Michigan. After completing her undergraduate degree at Western Kentucky University, She completed both medical school and her general surgery residency at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN, during which she obtained an Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality training grant as well as a Masters in Public Health during research time. Following residency, she served as an active duty staff surgeon in the US Navy for several years before pursuing surgical oncology fellowship training at Moffitt Cancer Center. In 2016 she came on to University of Michigan as faculty and has since held numerous academic leadership roles both institutionally and nationally, including vice chair for faculty development, chief of the division of surgical oncology, and president of the Surgical Outcomes Club. Dr. Dossett has an impressive portfolio of research work focusing on implementation and de-implementation of comprehensive cancer care, which is funded through multiple NIH grants.  If you enjoyed this episode, stay tuned for more upcoming BTK/ASGBI collaborative content. Ondine Biomedical Inc President and Chief Technology Officer Nicolas Loebel and Matt Ross, Vice President of Sales and Marketing joined Steve Darling from Proactive to share exciting news regarding the expansion of Ondine's Steriwave nasal photodisinfection technology within the healthcare sector. Alberta Health Services has confirmed its decision to expand the use of Steriwave nasal photodisinfection following promising data from its pilot introduction at the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute. The pilot project demonstrated significant reductions in surgical site infections following cardiac surgery. Ross provided more details about the successful pilot project and shared that the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton is set to implement Steriwave nasal photodisinfection before performing 3,000 orthopedic surgeries over the next year. The interest from hospitals across Canada and internationally has been increasing, leading to faster adoption of the platform. Loebel also highlighted the latest data from Vancouver General Hospital and UBC Hospital, which showed a remarkable 66.5% reduction in spine surgery infection rates with the pre-surgical use of Steriwave. These findings were presented at the IP2023 Annual conference in Liverpool in October and have been accepted for publication in the Canadian Journal of Surgery. In summary, Ondine Biomedical Inc, under the leadership of Nicolas Loebel and Matt Ross, is making significant strides in advancing its Steriwave nasal photodisinfection technology within the healthcare sector. The successful pilot projects and promising data underscore the potential for this technology to reduce surgical site infections and improve patient outcomes in a range of surgical procedures, including cardiac and orthopedic surgeries. This progress positions Ondine Biomedical Inc as a key player in infection prevention and healthcare innovation. #proactiveinvestors #ondinebiomedicalinc #lse #obi #steriwave #infection #antimicrobialresistance #HealthcareInnovation #InfectionControl #MedicalTechnology #SurgicalInfections #NasalPhotodisinfection #MedicalAdvancements #AMR #AntimicrobialResistance #HealthcareSolutions #ClinicalEffectiveness #PatientSafety #SpineSurgery #MedicalResearch #GlobalHealth #HospitalTechnology #MedicalConference #HealthTech #InnovationInMedicine #MedicalNews #PatientOutcomes #SurgicalProcedures #HealthcareIndustry #MedicalBreakthrough #InfectionPrevention#invest #investing #investment #investor #stockmarket #stocks #stock #stockmarketnews

In this episode, we talk to Dr Mike Freelander MP, Federal Member for Macarthur and Government Whip, about engaging the Australian voters in the political discourse. Topics covered include: - How a ‘boomer' politician can understand the needs of young voters - What life was like for young Australians in the 1970s - The biggest struggles for young Australians - What Australians are facing with the current housing and rental market - How the Opposition can influence policy change and development in Australia - The important role of committees in bipartisan policy recommendations - How working as a doctor led to a career in politics - The impact of politics on people's health - The growing trend towards conservative politics globally - How technology has changed our society - The need to provide more political education in schools - How young people can engage in the political agenda - The benefits of having political discussions at the dinner table - The slightly misunderstood nature of Federal Parliament in Australia - The benefits of school trips to Canberra - Whether or not the voting age should be lowered - The challenges currently facing constituents in the Macarthur electorate - The lack of future planning in Australia - How we deal with the growing population of Australia, including through immigration - The rhetoric around climate change About Dr Freelander: Dr Mike Freelander has been a paediatrician in Campbelltown for 36 years and has dedicated his life's work to make sure our kids get the best start in life. Mike trained as a paediatrician at the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children in Camperdown after completing his residency at the Royal North Shore Hospital. In 1984, Mike and his wife Sharon moved to the Macarthur Region where they raised their six children. At this time Mike commenced work at Campbelltown Hospital where he took on the role as Head of Paediatrics from 1986 to 2013. Mike set up practices in Campbelltown and Camden because he saw that the growing needs of the region were not being met. Despite his workload as a paediatrician Mike still finds time to give back to his profession, teaching the next generation of doctors as a lecturer at Western Sydney University. His hard work and dedication to the region has earnt him the respect of local families and residents. In his 36 years as a paediatrician in the Macarthur region, Mike has seen over 200,000 patients. Mike has increasingly seen his patients and their families face issues of access; access to healthcare, access to work, access to housing and access to education. It is these issues that drove Mike to run for the Federal seat of Macarthur.  Mike is here to try and make life better for the children he has cared for and their families.
