Real Life  Devon just got back from Barcelona, where his sister-in-law's wedding was equal parts joyful and medically confusing (house-wide illness, mystery IV drip, etc.). Between family chaos and questioning the overwhelming religious vibes, he managed to sneak in a tour of tapas bars—including Bobby's Free, a barbershop turned speakeasy where you open a safe to get a drink. Also on the agenda: the Sagrada Familia, which still looks like Gaudí teamed up with an alien architect. Take a virtual tour and judge for yourself. Steven went full Jedi at Disney's Star Wars Night on Batuu, adding more lightsabers to a collection that's now approaching General Grievous territory. He caught the live Storyteller Show (“shockingly emotional for a theme park thing”) and did some heavy-duty geeking out at the custom saber forge. Series two sabers are out now. Good luck, your wallet. Ben's been working on his nap game. He's reading Take a Nap! Change Your Life by Sara Mednick (link), thanks to a recommendation from Cool Tools. Lucid dreaming, better brain function, and maybe—just maybe—a dream where he finally builds his own lightsaber. Also: Devon didn't watch The Naboo Movie, which we're still not convinced is real. Future or Now  Ben found a Reddit guide to rewiring your brain—more philosophy than prescription, but helpful as a reminder: break bad loops, reframe your thinking, stay mindful. Simple ideas, not always simple to do. Devon brought the science bombshell: astronomers may have detected a biosignature outside our solar system. It's not a “we found aliens” headline, but it's the strongest hint yet that something biological might be out there. Researchers are cautious, but intrigued. So are we. Steven recapped Andor season 2, episodes 1–3. The political tension is still top-tier, the pacing's tighter, and the existential dread remains on-brand. Also, WondLa season 2 is out now (IMDb), if you need more sci-fi world-building in your queue. Book Club  No book this week—we're recharging. But next time, we're reading “A Brief Dance to the Music of the Spheres” by Michael Kurland from The Best of Omni Science Fiction #6. Read it here, and don't skip the illustrations—they're wild in the best way. Back next week with cosmic dances, dream experiments, and at least one more lightsaber.

Sara Mednick visits Google to discuss her book, "Take a Nap! Change Your Life." Imagine a product that increases alertness, boosts creativity, reduces stress, improves perception, stamina, motor skills, and accuracy, helps you make better decisions, keeps you looking younger, aids in weight loss, reduces the risk of heart attack, elevates your mood, and strengthens memory. Now imagine that this product is nontoxic, has no dangerous side effects, and, best of all, is absolutely free. This miracle drug is, in fact, nothing more than the nap: the right nap at the right time. Sara Mednik's book Take a Nap! details a scientifically-based breakthrough program that shows how we can fight the fatigue epidemic through a custom-designed nap. The book explains the five stages of the sleep cycle, particularly Stage Two, or Slow Wave Sleep, and REM, and the benefits each one provides; how to assess your tiredness and set up a personal sleep profile; and how to neutralize the voice in your head that tells you napping is a sign of laziness. Using the unique Nap Wheel on the cover and interior graphs and charts, it shows us exactly when our optimal napping time is, and exactly how long we should try to sleep—even how it's possible to design a nap to inspire creativity one day, and the next day design one to help us with our memory. There are tips on how to create the right nap environment, a 16-step technique for falling asleep, a six-week napping workbook, and more. Originally published in November of 2007. A good way to keep one's cognitive faculties strong is to go to bed at a decent hour, according to Dr. Sara Mednick, director of the Sleep and Cognition Lab at the University of California, Irvine. Her research shows the amount of deep sleep we get in mid-life is critical for preventing dementia as we age.  It's so important that Dr. Mednick recommends getting to bed at 9pm since deep sleep happens at the beginning of the night and you want to get as much of it as possible.  A phase of sleep she calls “downstate” is important to the rhythm of life because it allows people to restore energy for their waking hours. If toxic proteins accumulated in the brain during daytime are not flushed out at night, they can build into “plaques and tangles” that become part of dementia. Healthy long-term sleep patterns, Dr. Mednick says, can prevent “memory pathologies.”  Professor Sara Mednick, PhD is a cognitive neuroscientist at the University of California, Irvine and author of The Power of the Downstate. Dr. Sara Mednick is renowned sleep expert and a cognitive neuroscientist Professor of Psychology at the University of California. Her goal is to understanding how the brain and body works. Her lab does this through an around the clock seven-bedroom research study into sleep and the autonomic nervous system. Her research findings have been published in leading scientific journals such as Nature Neuroscience, The Proceedings from the National Academy of Science, and as well as many media outlets. She is the author of The Power Of The Downstate. Drawing on her original findings—and those of others across many fields of medicine—Dr. Mednick creates a comprehensive picture of the Upstate/Downstate rhythms that orchestrate all of our bodies' vital systems, along with a novel theory that aging is caused by spending less and less time in Downstate activities. The Power of the Downstate offers practical, evidence-based insight into how we can all enable those systems to work together in better harmony. Dr. Mednick will discuss: How our bodies and minds are guided by a natural Upstate/Downstate rhythm—and how our modern lifestyles disrupt these rhythms to our detriment; How our vital organs and systems benefit from spending more time in the Downstate – which decreases the risk for Alzheimer's disease, chronic illness, and early death; How we can activate the Downstate through rethinking how to breathe, eat, sleep and exercise; and The practical four-week Downstate RecoveryPlus Plan. How we can be alert, productive, and cognitively sharp during the day, feel greater intimacy and affection, and enjoy consolidated, restorative sleep at night . . . expand our years of mental and physical vitality.

Kara Robinson Chamberlain - Why you must be vigilant about your safety. Brought to you by AppSumo's application marketplace (https://social.appsumo.com/passion), Gusto's all-in-one HR solution https://www.gusto.com/passionstruck, the Policygenius insurance comparison website (https://www.policygenius.com/), and Indeed the platform for hiring (https://www.indeed.com/passionstruck). Kara Robinson Chamberlain was 15 years old when she was approached by a man in her friend's front yard in Columbia, South Carolina. At first, the gentleman appeared friendly, but then he drew a gun, shoved it against her neck, and forced Kara into the back of his car into a storage bin. Over the next 18 hours, Kara was held and sexually assaulted before she miraculously escaped her capture. Kara's quick action and extensive information she provided law enforcement unveiled that her kidnapper was not only a pedophile but a serial killer who had murdered three other female victims in Virginia: 16-year-old Sofia Silva in 1996 and a year later, sisters 12-year-old Kati Lisk and 15-year-old Kristin Lisk. Kara's story is nothing short of remarkable. Not only did Kara Robinson Chamberlain heroically escape her kidnapper, but her bravery was instrumental in aiding the police in catching a serial killer before he could murder another victim. In addition to discussing what happened in 2002, we also discuss why outwardly showing strength can hide how a victim is dealing with their trauma. Kara explains how her coping with trauma started to take over her life and the steps she took to overcome it. She describes how she is now using her ordeal and years of work in law enforcement to communicate to groups worldwide.  Kara tells her account as a tool to help train those who work with victims. The traditional pattern in life is to hit the ground running when the alarm sounds in the morning, go full speed ahead all day with the possibility of a short break over the lunch hour, cap it off with a session at the gym, kids activities or errands before – if we're lucky – crashing on the couch for a bit of mindless TV before crawling into bed and then starting the whole process over the next day. It sounds too crazy to be true: Corporations and scientists using sounds and smells to influence people's dreams. But targeted dream incubation is not limited to the realm of science fiction. Scientists use the method to help patients overcome addictions such as smoking, and corporations have launched advertising campaigns that encourage willing participants to participate in having their dreams shaped. Sara Mednick, a professor of cognitive neuroscience at UCI, is worried about the potential misuse of dream incubation and recently joined about 40 other sleep and dream scientists in signing an open letter voicing their concerns. In this episode of the UCI Podcast, Professor Mednick discusses how dream incubation works, and how sleep keeps people healthy.

The nap is a completely foreign concept to our host, Neil Hedley. Because Neil typically takes an hour or so to fall asleep, intentional short-duration sleep has normally been beyond his grasp. Then, he met Dr. Sara Mednick. Sara is Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of California, Irvine and author of the book, Take a Nap! Change your life (affiliate link). She looked at data from a study involving napping habits in nearly 4,000 elementary school children. Subsequently, she and her team found some fascinating patterns. For example, it turns out that the nap is among the things credited for improvements in cognition, psychological wellness - including what Sara and her team referred to as "grit" - and reduced emotional and behavioral problems. We've talked before about sleep duration, like in two episodes with Dr. Adrian Owen OBE, but we've never gotten into detail on a quick siesta. As a result, that detail shows up here. We talk about everything from how sleep hygiene applies to a short snooze, to the idea of a coffee nap. We're wired to nap, Sara says. Or at least some of us are. Daylight doesn't have the same impact on the crowd that's predisposed for grabbing some quick shut-eye, for example. Furthermore, some people actually get better sleep at night when their day includes a nap. Especially when it happens as far removed as possible from their nighttime sleep. Sara told us, "a twenty-minute nap at any time of the day is really not going to interfere with your sleep." Moreover, she says if you do it earlier in the day, and for a little bit longer, even an hour and a half, "we haven't shown any differences in nighttime sleep." A few weeks ago, I had an opportunity to read this excerpt from Sara Mednick ' s book, Take a Nap and Change Your Life! “ One in five adults is so sleepy that it interferes with his or her daily activities a few days a week, while an additional 20 percent report impairment a few days a month. Our standard of living is slipping. Our students are underperforming. Our collective health is deteriorating. But continually overlooked is the role of that quiet little demon: fatigue. ”
