Have often do you stop to question if your actions in life are based on what you truly desire for your life, or if you are subscribing to what you believe you should be doing? In this episode, my guest Zale Mednick and I discuss our preconceptions of life and how our individual backgrounds may affect how we interpret them and incorporate them into our lives, without even realizing it. Zale Mednick is a practicing ophthalmologist in Toronto.  He also runs the award-winning podcast, Preconceived, which aims to challenge preconceptions on an array of topics related to society and culture.   His recent book, 'Preconceived - Challenging the preconceptions in our lives', is an anthology of fifty short essays written by previous guests on the podcast.   We talk about why Zale has chosen to devote so much of his life to sharing these stories from different guests of all walks of life and perspectives, and what he hopes we all can gain by listening. We'll touch on: [1:27] What does happiness mean to Zale? [4:34] Digging into Zale's book [8:10] How much do you think people really subscribe to the preconceived ideas that we feel are out there for everyday life? [10:54] A few thoughts on figuring out if something is true to us or if it is something we've just subscribed to our whole life. [14:28] The catalyst for him to explore this topic for his book and podcast. [15:41] Preconceptions Zale might have had at the start of his podcast. [20:52] How our backgrounds shape us. [22:43] The role of empathy in examining preconceptions. [26:25] Why it's important to talk about these potentially taboo topics. [28:53] What is the goal of his podcast and book? The Amazing Brain-Rebooting Benefits of a Power Nap

Every once in a while, my computer bogs down. Everything I do takes longer than it should. Some programs don't even work. When that happens, I do a forced shutdown and reboot the computer. A few minutes later, it runs like new. You can do the same thing for your brain. Rather than trying to think and do things with a fraction of your cognitive abilities, you can reboot your brain with a ten-minute power nap. Some of the world's leading companies encourage employees to sleep during their workday. For several years, companies like Google, Zappos, and Uber have had designated nap spaces and "nap pods" to help their workforce refresh their minds at midday.Costa, D. (2017). "Should Employers Encourage Power Naps?" Harvard Business Review. Retrieved from hbr.org And no, they aren't doing this to be 'cool' or 'hip.' There's a science-backed reason behind it. This midday snooze isn't your typical slumber; it's a 'power nap.' You might be wondering: "What is a power nap?" A power nap, as the name implies, is a short bout of sleep designed to quickly rejuvenate your brain, leaving you more alert, focused, and yes, more productive.Dhand, R., & Sohal, H. (2006). "Good sleep, bad sleep! The role of daytime naps in healthy adults." Current Opinion in Pulmonary Medicine. Retrieved from journals.lww.com Reports indicate that after incorporating power naps into their daily routine, employees at these forward-thinking companies have seen noticeable improvements in job performance, creativity, and overall job satisfaction. This is where the power of a power nap truly shines. In this article, we'll dive into the amazing brain-rebooting benefits of power naps, explore how long a power nap should ideally be, and discuss what happens to your brain during this period of rest. Along the way, we'll make sure you're armed with evidence-based knowledge so you can optimize your own routine for peak performance. As always, keep the conversation going: Ask a question or leave a comment. What is a Power Nap? To put it simply, a power nap is a brief sleep that occurs during waking hours. But there's a bit more to it than that. Scientifically speaking, a power nap isn't about catching up on lost sleep or lazily dozing off during a dull meeting.Mednick, S., & Ehrman, M. (2006). "Take a Nap! Change Your Life." Workman Publishing. It's a strategic, short sleep that's meant to revive your mental sharpness.Dinges, D. F., Pack, F., Williams, K., Gillen, K. A., Powell, J. W., Ott, G. E., Aptowicz, C., & Pack, A. I. (1995). "Cumulative sleepiness, mood disturbance, and psychomotor vigilance performance decrements during a week of sleep restricted to 4-5 hours per night." Sleep, 20(4), 267-277. A power nap can last anywhere between 10 to 30 minutes. The key here is to keep it 'short.' Why? Because if you nap for too long, you risk entering the deeper stages of sleep, which can leave you groggy and disoriented when you wake up. This phenomenon is known as sleep inertia. Think of a power nap as a pit stop for your brain—a quick, but effective pause in the midst of your daily race. Just like how a quick fuel top-up can help a racing car run more efficiently, a power nap is meant to recharge your brain, so you can zoom through the rest of your day with mental clarity and agility.Gillberg, M., Kecklund, G., Axelsson, J., & Akerstedt, T. (1996). "The effects of a short daytime nap after restricted night sleep." Sleep, 19(7), 570-575. In the following sections, we'll delve into the science behind power naps and their benefits, and answer the question that's probably lingering on your mind: "How long should a power nap be?" The Science Behind Power Naps When you lay your head down for a power nap, what exactly happens to your brain? The answer lies in the unique architecture of sleep. Sleep comprises cycles, each including various stages, from light sleep to deep sleep and the dream-infused Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep.Carskadon,

Do you struggle with the new normal that the pandemic has brought — constant Zoom calls, online webinars, and limited face-to-face interaction? The big changes brought about by the pandemic altered how we function day-to-day. And many of these add stress to our life. So how do we adapt to these sudden big changes and face the new normal? Dr. Amy Mednick is a psychiatrist working in her own private practice. She received her medical degree with Distinction in Research from Albert Einstein College of Medicine and a Bachelor of Science in Brain & Cognitive Sciences from MIT. She specializes in the overlap between the humanities and neuroscience and leads a lecture series for psychiatric residents in training, social workers, and psychology trainees. She's been involved in both brain research and linguistic research and has authored articles in Clinical Psychiatry News. Her new book is Humanizing the Remote Experience through Leadership and Coaching: Strategies for Better Virtual Connections. In this episode, Amy dives a little bit deeper and explains the unconscious cognitive change the pandemic has brought in our day-to-day functioning and interaction whether in the workplace or in life.   What you will learn from this episode: Uncover why you feel more tired and exhausted with the sudden shift to the online world Explore different ways to overcome mental fatigue in the new normal Learn the three warning signs you need to watch for and the action you then need to take   “Do things that someone running from a tiger wouldn't do.” -Dr. Amy Mednick   Valuable Free Resource: How to humanize the new normal and make better virtual connections through promising strategies: Humanizing the Remote Experience through Leadership and Coaching: Strategies for Better Virtual Connection   Topics Covered: 01:55 - How the Pandemic Started It All: Dr. Amy shares why she and Dr. Leonard decided to write the book 04:05 - Boundaries Between Anything: What made the pandemic hard for most people? 05:25 - The Warning Trio: Dr. Amy talks about the warning signs that our needs are not getting met 06:44 - Need for Safety: Why is it so hard for you to focus especially when everything's transitioning virtual? 08:45 - Need for Understanding: Why do you end up more exhausted from WFH rather than F2F 09:49 - Need for Belonging: How can exclusion and isolation actually hurt us physically? 12:18 - Dr. Amy explains how the feeling of exclusion manifests in us 19:55 - How to Simplify the Complex: Dr. Amy shares how women leaders can address the complexity the pandemic brought in the workplace 22:29 - What can you do to help your team recharge, especially during the pandemic? 24:31 - Sending Virtual Hugs: Dr. Amy shares how can you create a sense of safety and belongingness within your workplace 25:18 - Does the remote work setting still overlooks women and their capabilities? 26:16 - Disconnecting Online, Connecting Offline: What can you do to avoid misunderstandings and disconnections in remote settings 29:55 - Take Care of Yourself First: Dr. Amy talks about the importance of self-care in lowering your team's stress levels over Zoom and the new normal 36:10 - Dr. Amy shares why psychological safety is so important   Key Takeaways: “We get used to anything. As humans, we adjust to anything. So, I think now it's a way of life. And it's getting easier.” -Dr. Amy Mednick “It's a lot of work to make sense of things. So, if you're exhausted at the end of a workday, it could be a warning sign that your brain is working excessively hard just to make sense of what is going on with others around you and that maybe there's an adjustment that you could make there.” -Dr. Amy Mednick “Mental fatigue, mental work, brain work affects your physical strength.” -Dr. Amy Mednick “Your brain does not like discrepancy. It does not like things it can't explain. So, when something doesn't match what it expected, like a laugh at a joke, it's going to work really hard to try to fix that.” -Dr. Amy Mednick “Anything extraneous that you can take away the overload is going to be really helpful.” -Dr. Amy Mednick “The remote experience is ambiguous enough. Do not add any ambiguity, make things extra, extra clear, extra explicit. Make goals explicit. Make the goals of meetings and the structure very explicit.” -Dr. Amy Mednick “Even though you're leading a team, you need to be okay. You need to be in a good place. You need to have safety and comfort. When we were young, we all thought we knew what life would be like when we grew up. Most of us were way off! Life is about more than preconceived notions and expectations. At some point, the steps we take should be a conscious choice, not simply a matter of following the "traditional path." It's important to change our societal expectations as our culture, lifestyle, and technology move forward. To examine ways to challenge traditional societal expectations, I've invited Zale Mednick to join me. Zale Mednick is an ophthalmologist by trade, and also host of the award winning podcast Preconceived and is also the editor of Preconceived: Challenging the Preconceptions in Our Lives. Zale shares how his journey to become a doctor took a turn when he stopped to consider pursuing interests and passions beyond his profession. He landed on the idea of a podcast, and took up the banner of investigating the preconceived notions that we rarely think to question. What holds us back? What "old" beliefs do we carry - preconceptions that aren't necessarily true anymore? While it's easy to get started with a podcast, sticking it out is often a challenge, and many podcasters stop creating by episode 25. Reaching out to friends and family, and asking them to sit for a podcast interview, gave Zack the confidence and experience he needed to build a reputation as a podcast host, broadening his guest list with people he didn't know. After having more than 100 guests, Zale thought the idea would work well as a book. He began to reach out to former guests , asking them to write essays, thought pieces, or short stories about the preconceived ideas they had challenged. 54 of them agreed to join him, and a book was born: Preconceived: Challenging the Preconceptions in Our Lives.   If you are tired of going through the motions and want to jump into something new, check out this insightful episode. It's sure to spark your passion and challenge your assumptions!    Three Key Takeaways: * Podcasts can take a long time to see results.  You need to commit for longer than logic might dictate you should. * Repurposing and resharing content is a time saving method to reach new audiences and grow your brand. * If you are looking for a change don't let fear hold you back. Find a low risk way to make the pivot.

Rick Sanchez welcomes show producer Scotty Mednick and journalist-podcaster Mike Leon to the show to discuss recent statements made by Arizona gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake when she claimed that Latino immigrants were mostly to blame for the fentanyl crisis in the US.  Sanchez fact-checks those statements and reveals that 86 percent of the people arrested for fentanyl drug trafficking are US citizens.  In fact, only .002 percent of Latino immigrants are caught with Fentanyl and 90 percent of the fentanyl seizures are made at legal border crossings from Americans.  Sanchez, Mednick, and Leon conclude that we should concentrate on the source of the problem and stop blaming immigrants.  The fentanyl problem in this country has nothing to do with them.  RSN_S1_E0059 Learn more about your ad choices. Fox edited and did not air the more controversial parts of the interview and only aired the parts that would appeal to their conservative audience.  Sanchez shares the controversial clips that Fox did not air and questions whether this is simply a ploy by the musical artist in order to get publicity, or if it is a sign of something deeper concerning his mental health. A good way to keep one's cognitive faculties strong is to go to bed at a decent hour, according to Dr. Sara Mednick, director of the Sleep and Cognition Lab at the University of California, Irvine. Her research shows the amount of deep sleep we get in mid-life is critical for preventing dementia as we age.  It's so important that Dr. Mednick recommends getting to bed at 9pm since deep sleep happens at the beginning of the night and you want to get as much of it as possible.  A phase of sleep she calls “downstate” is important to the rhythm of life because it allows people to restore energy for their waking hours. If toxic proteins accumulated in the brain during daytime are not flushed out at night, they can build into “plaques and tangles” that become part of dementia. Healthy long-term sleep patterns, Dr. Mednick says, can prevent “memory pathologies.”  Professor Sara Mednick, PhD is a cognitive neuroscientist at the University of California, Irvine and author of The Power of the Downstate. Join us to discuss the most recent brain research confirming the indispensable value of the "downstate" (sleep)—the key to cellular rejuvenation—and how to use the downstate to maximize your physical and mental vitality. Most people are worn down by the daily grind, but the body is designed to alleviate its effects. Brain research continues to accumulate ever more detail about why the downstate is so indispensable to our mental and physical health. Mednick's Sleep and Cognition Lab studies the role sleep plays in forming our long-term memories, regulating our emotions, keeping our cardiovascular system functioning properly, and helping older adults stay alert and more agile. The downstate is an integral part of all the physiological, cognitive and emotional processes that allow us to stay as strong as possible. So why do we often ignore it during our stressful, nonstop lives, when respecting the downstate would mean a longer, healthier life? Mednick's answer encompasses all the most up-to-date findings from autonomic, sleep, circadian rhythms, exercise physiology, and nutrition research. She won't tell you to stop working so hard. The sweet smell of ambition in the morning is not the enemy. Rather, she explains how we can handle any reasonable amount of stress as long as we replenish ourselves on a daily basis—and so indefinitely delay burning out.
