Brave Dynamics: Authentic Leadership Reflections

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 7, 2023 29:13

Scott Hartley, Managing Partner of Everywhere Ventures, and Jeremy Au discuss three main themes: 1. Global Pre-Seed VC Investing: Scott presented a contrarian view against the conventional wisdom that pre-seed and seed-stage investing must be localized. He argued that with modern communication tools and the evolving VC landscape, it's feasible to be a global pre-seed investor. He discussed how Everywhere Ventures adopts this approach and shared that they're relatively price insensitive, typically entering investments with valuations between $6 and $8 million. He talked about how they emphasize team evaluation and leverage a network of trusted founders and operators to access global deals, focusing on the right timing and market relevance for business ideas. 2. Regional Investment Insights: Scott shared his experiences and insights from investing in Southeast Asian companies like Kumu, Lomotif, and Booky, and described the process of engaging with these companies from their early stages and aiding them in finding product-market fit. He also highlighted that while valuations in Southeast Asia have traditionally been lower, there's a shift towards market-clearing rounds, making these markets increasingly attractive to global investors. 3. Valuation and Pricing Risk: Jeremy and Scott touched on the dynamics of valuation and pricing risk in VC. Scott explained that while early-stage investments carry less pricing risk, later-stage investments present a significant challenge. They discussed the varying opportunities in global markets such as lending to Indian-based SaaS companies against US dollar-denominated accounts. He also talked about the Philippine SaaS market where valuations were approximately half of the typical US valuations, reflecting the diverse supply and demand dynamics of capital and highlighting the need for investors to be astute in understanding and leveraging these differences. They also talked about identifying and nurturing early-stage startups with a global potential, the nuances of market adaptation, the role of trusted networks in deal flow and investment decisions, and the importance of aligning investment strategies with technological trends. The best kind of data radical is one who knows how to balance their technical expertise with their fuzzy side. Skills like storytelling, empathy, and ethics are becoming invaluable in the tech space. The ability to balance both enables data folks to recognize patterns where others might miss them. This type of integrative thinking can guide people on their next investment, whether they're investing time, money, or resources. Scott Hartley is a global early-stage investor and author of The Fuzzy and the Techie: Why the Liberal Arts Will Rule the Digital World. His passion lies in emerging markets and big ideas that improve lives, particularly in financial services, health, supply chain, and logistics. Scott has served as a Presidential Innovation Fellow at the White House and has co-founded two venture capital firms: Everywhere Ventures and Two Culture Capital. Satyen and Scott discuss the techie and fuzzy sides of Silicon Valley, the advancement of tech, and how Scott chooses his next investment.--------“I love this thought around data collection and big data is one thing, it's collecting information. But, then turning that information into knowledge and into wisdom. In one part, can be done through unstructured to structured data, through things like LLMs that are enabling us to move out of the information noise into a bit more knowledge noise, and then maybe into wisdom specificity. I still think that there's a leap there that's going to be human-driven. Whether it's a person sitting there interpreting or it's a team of engineers thinking about the sensitivities, the data tagging. There are human decisions in the mix somewhere along that chain, as we're taking on structured data and turning it into structured knowledge and wisdom. All these things to say, that even these deeply technical infrastructure-level technologies, have elements of humanity in them.” – Scott Hartley--------Time Stamps:*(10:55): The genesis behind The Fuzzy and the Techie*(18:11): Subjectivity, structure, and bias*(20:17): Scott's investment focus*(30:09): The “tables-stakes economy” *(38:11): AI and public policy *(47:43): Satyen's Takeaways--------SponsorThis podcast is presented by Alation.Learn more:* Subscribe to the newsletter: https://www.alation.com/podcast/* Alation's LinkedIn Profile: https://www.linkedin.com/company/alation/* Satyen's LinkedIn Profile: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ssangani/--------LinksRead The Fuzzy and the TechieVisit Scott's websiteConnect with Scott on LinkedIn

Serial entrepreneur and Founder of MasterPlan4Success, Scott Hartley built his first company into a multi-six-figure business from scratch. Taking his knowledge and experience in 2017, Scott decided to teach other small business owners about marketing strategies, systems, automation, and - in particular, optimizing their email deliverability to maximize their profits. He has helped a wide variety of clients, including attorneys, IT consultants, financial advisors, psychologists, community organizations, and many others to make more money, get them to win, and keep more customers. Scott has shared the virtual stage with experts like Grant Cardone, Loral Langemeier, Kim Walsh Phillips, David Milton, and many more. A small IT company in rural southwestern Indiana was the starting point for Scott. Initially, friends and family reached out to him for computer assistance, which eventually led to him establishing a business. Despite having limited knowledge about running a business, he persevered and built it into a multi-six-figure company. However, he started feeling burnt out with technology and discovered a passion for marketing, which led him to work with small business owners from around the country. Email marketing caught his attention, and he noticed the flaws in the way small business owners executed their email campaigns. He dove into it and discovered four fundamentals of email marketing that he now teaches others to help them succeed.Scott advises small business owners on effective email marketing strategies. He emphasizes the importance of monitoring engagement metrics, such as open and click-through rates, to ensure that more emails get delivered. He cautions against using bought or cold email lists and recommends segmenting your audience based on their interests. For example, if you have dog and cat lovers on your list, sending dog-related content to cat lovers will hurt engagement. By sending relevant content to engaged subscribers, mailbox providers like Microsoft, Google, and Yahoo will prioritize your emails and land them in the inbox. Many YouTube videos discuss different techniques for warming up email boxes, including technical aspects like SPF and DMC alignment. Scott recommends avoiding cold emails, as they can quickly damage the sender's reputation and negatively affect email deliverability. He advises clients to find alternative methods for building their email lists, such as social media or direct mail. Regarding selecting an email service provider (ESP) like MailChimp or Active Campaign, he suggests starting with one of these platforms early on, even with a small list of people, for the benefits of automation and engagement metric tracking. The increase in the list can come from a variety of things such as improving the subject lines, personalization, segmenting the list, sending more valuable content, and improving the overall design of the emails. Some companies also offer services to help with the creation of content, managing the list, and setting up advanced automation to streamline the process. However, it's important to note that email marketing is not a one-size-fits-all approach and what works for one company may not work for another. It's important to continually test and adjust your strategy to find what resonates best with your audience. In this episode:[02:00] Scott shares going from not knowing how to run a business to building a multi-6-figure-a-year business. Experiencing burnout with technology and discovered a passion for marketing.Dedicating himself to helping businesses increase their email deliverability.[4:50] Monitoring email engagement to determine how audiences interact with content.
