Text us your thoughts on the episode or the show! The rise of AI tools has dramatically changed the landscape of email marketing and sales outreach, creating both exciting opportunities and significant risks. As Mustafa Saeed, co-founder and CEO of Luella, explains in this eye-opening conversation, many revenue teams are now "scared shitless" about how their reps might abuse these powerful new technologies. When AI-powered automation tools are implemented without proper guardrails, organizations face serious threats to their brand reputation, domain health, and even compliance standing. The problem isn't AI itself, but rather "AI coupled with reckless automation" that floods inboxes with content that lacks genuine value. As email service providers like Google and Microsoft respond with increasingly aggressive spam filters, even legitimate messages from trusted senders are getting caught in the crossfire. The solution isn't abandoning AI but reimagining how we use it. While many AI tools promise to remove humans from the loop, Saeed argues for bringing them back in through thoughtful collaboration between humans and AI agents. This approach combines the best of both worlds—AI's ability to analyze vast datasets and humans' talent for building authentic relationships.Episode Brought to You By MO Pros The #1 Community for Marketing Operations ProfessionalsSupport the show

Text us your thoughts on the episode or the show!Marketing leaders face a painful dilemma: they need to prove their impact through data, but marketing data is notoriously messy compared to the cleaner, more discrete data available to sales and finance teams. This gap creates what Eric Westerkamp, CEO of CaliberMind, calls a "data dumpster fire" that marketing operations professionals must somehow transform into credible reporting.Drawing from 20 years of executive leadership experience spanning sales and entrepreneurship, Eric offers a refreshingly practical perspective on how marketing teams can build trust in their data and storytelling. Rather than attempting to fix all data quality issues before beginning reporting initiatives, he advocates starting small with specific reports that deliver meaningful insights. This approach allows teams to identify which data elements need fixing while simultaneously delivering value. The conversation explores how marketing operations teams can effectively normalize data across systems, enabling consistent reporting even as organizations migrate between platforms or evolve their naming conventions. Eric shares a striking example where analysis of 1,800 job titles revealed that 80% were unique variations of essentially the same titles—a common challenge that undermines segmentation and reporting efforts. The episode also examines how AI is revolutionizing marketing operations. While AI tools may struggle with complex calculations, they excel at transforming buyer journey data with thousands of touchpoints into credible stories. Organizations embracing these capabilities are gaining significant efficiency advantages, with SDRs able to cover 20% more accounts and marketing teams generating insights faster than competitors.Whether you're a marketing operations professional struggling to build reporting credibility or a CMO needing to better demonstrate your team's impact, this conversation provides actionable guidance for taming your data dumpster fire and transforming it into powerful, trusted insights that drive business decisions. Humans of Martech

What's up everyone, today we have the pleasure of sitting down with Ruari Baker, Co-Founder and CEO of Allegrow. Summary: Your fancy AI personalization messaging strategy doesn't mean anything if you don't also have a strategy for email deliverability. Ruari busts long-standing myths about HTML vs plain text, why open rates died with Apple's 2021 privacy changes, and why the spam complaints visible in your marketing platform represent a fraction of reality. You'll walk away with 3 deliverability tactics that will help you reach the inbox and stay there: implement multi-subdomains to isolate high-risk traffic, adopt contact risk scoring that transcends basic validation and start using Google Postmaster to see your actual reputation metrics. Escape the promo tab without sacrificing design, resurrect damaged domains, and find out why traditional seed testing is worthless. If you depend on email, this might be the best 40 minutes you'll spend this month. About RuariRuari started entrepreneurship early (at 18 years old) and joined a startup accelerator where he received mentorship from top tech founders in the UK as well as his first investmentHe co-founded Direct Software, a GDPR-first marketing automation solution where he gained a deep understanding of email deliverabilityToday, Ruari is Co-Founder and CEO of Allegrow, an email deliverability platform to help emails reach the primary inbox, not the spam folderPlain Text Emails Will Always Outperform HTML Emails When it Comes to Inbox PlacementThe HTML vs text email question hangs over every marketer's campaign planning session like a dark cloud. Ruari slices through this persistent debate with razor-sharp clarity. Context dictates winners here, not blanket rules. For outbound sales, plain text creates an authenticity that HTML instantly kills. Think about it—you craft personal emails without fancy formatting. The second your recipient spots that polished design, their brain categorizes your message as "marketing material," and your personalization efforts crumble.> “You can't just simply say 'always plain text, that's better.' The reality is there are still good business reasons for using Rich HTML, and that's why it is such a popular way to send emails from a marketing perspective.”Email providers have learned to associate complex formatting with promotional content that users often ignore. Your deliverability suffers accordingly. Yet HTML emails persist for good reason:Large subscriber lists benefit from HTML's clickthrough tracking capabilitiesE-commerce companies generate higher engagement when customers see products directlyVisual brands communicate their identity more effectively through designed templatesData-heavy messages become more scannable with proper formatting and hierarchyThe winning strategy lives somewhere in the messy middle. "If you're using HTML for legitimate marketing emails to an opted-in list, implement these practices to maintain deliverability," Ruari advises. Clean your entire list monthly—remove invalid contacts, keep bounce rates low, and eliminate potential spam trap subscriptions. This simple 30-day hygiene ritual dramatically improves your sender reputation with both ESPs and inbox systems.HTML devotees should strategically incorporate plain text messages at key points in the subscriber journey. These unadorned communications slip past promotion folder algorithms, landing you in the primary inbox. This placement success creates a virtuous cycle, improving future message placement—even for your HTML campaigns. You must also implement a sunset policy for engagement maintenance. When subscribers show zero activity over your predetermined period, place them into a final-attempt workflow. No response? Remove them proactively. This keeps your engagement metrics healthy, the exact data points email providers scrutinize when judging your sending quality."I once worked with an e-commerce client who switched half their abandoned cart emails to plain text," Ruari shares. "Their revenue per email jumped 22% because more messages reached the primary inbox." The results speak volumes about matching format to objective rather than defaulting to what looks prettiest in your marketing dashboard.Key takeaway: Match email format to specific objectives. Use plain text for sales outreach and relationship-building. Deploy HTML strategically for e-commerce and visual campaigns. Maintain ruthless list hygiene by removing invalid contacts monthly, sending occasional plain text messages regardless of your primary format, and cutting unengaged subscribers after final reactivation attempts. Your deliverability—and ultimately your results—depend on this discipline.Create a Sunset Policy Based on Your Specific Industry Engagement PatternsYour email list contains a ticking time bomb of disengaged contacts that silently damage your sender reputation with every campaign. When asked about the right timeframe for removing inactive subscribers, Ruari offers a refreshingly nuanced take that shatters the "six-month rule" most marketers blindly follow. The optimal sunset policy timing depends entirely on your industry and baseline engagement metrics. Smart marketers look to identify and remove the bottom quartile or decile of subscribers based on engagement patterns specific to their audience.High-engagement industries demand different standards than low-engagement sectors. Imagine running email marketing for a compliance software company—a field few people find "sexy." Your engagement metrics naturally run lower than consumer brands, but those rare engagement spikes matter tremendously. When someone suddenly engages with your SOC 2 audit content after months of silence, that signals a critical buying window. Cutting them off after six months of inactivity would sacrifice valuable revenue opportunities unique to your industry cycle. You must establish internal benchmarks that reflect your specific business reality. Study your engagement patterns over 12-18 months. Look for natural dropoff points. Analyze which inactive subscribers eventually reactivate and what triggers that behavior. Create segments based on these findings, then craft sunset workflows that reflect the actual customer journey in your space. For some businesses, 90 days makes sense. For others, 12 months barely captures their sales cycle.> “At least having some sunset policy in place would already put you leaps and bounds ahead of the majority of your peers.”The mere existence of a sunset policy puts you "leaps and bounds ahead of the majority of your peers," Ruari points out. Most marketers obsessively protect their list size, treating subscriber counts as a vanity metric rather than focusing on engagement quality. They hoard inactive emails like digital dragons, destroying deliverability in the process. Your sunset policy doesn't need to be perfect—it simply needs to exist and run consistently. Start by removing obvious dead weight: bounced addresses, spam complaints, and truly inactive accounts. Then refine your approach as you gather more data about your specific audience patterns.Key takeaway: Create a sunset policy based on your specific industry engagement patterns rather than arbitrary timeframes. Identify your bottom-performing subscriber segment (by quartile or decile) and implement an automated workflow to either re-engage or remove them. Even an imperfect sunset policy executed consistently will dramatically improve your deliverability metrics and campaign effectiveness compared to never removing inactive subscribers. How to Escape Google Promotions Tab Prison Without Sacrificing DesignYou send a gorgeous HTML email campai...

So every single email, it can't just hit the inbox, it has to stand out, it has to engage from the beginning. It has to be hyper optimized for conversion. And text based without any of your brand just doesn't cut it anymore, right? And not just for solopreneurs. We actually we looked at a case study with Stripe. Stripe is a massive company, right? I think it's the largest private company in the world and they A/B tested a text-based email and one that was actually optimize for conversion using their own brand. And the on brand design-based email increased conversion by 21%. So whether you're a very small business or a large business, like design is not a luxury anymore.” — Martha Bitar, 00:03:32 → 00:04:14.160Why Owning Your Audience Matters: “The risk is not using it [email] because you saw what happened with TikTok, right? It can really disappear overnight and you're really on rented space. You don't own your audience. So over all of the effort that you put into building that followership and engagement can really go away. Where if you're building that on social media, but you're also saying, ‘Hey, by the way, join my newsletter.' That's the list that you own. You're not platform-dependent. Even if we at some point make a mistake and become like a dinosaur as well, and you want to jump ship and go to another platform, you can just download and export your entire subscriber list and go use another platform.” — Martha Bitar, 00:18:48 → 00:19:25Show notes powered by Castmagic---Have any questions about the show or topics you'd like us to explore further?Shoot us a DM; we'd love to hear from you.Want the weekly TL;DR of tips delivered to your mailbox?Check out our newsletter here.Follow us for content, clips, giveaways, & updates!Castmagic InstagramCastmagic TwitterCastmagic LinkedIn  ---Blaine Bolus - Co-Founder of CastmagicRamon Berrios - Co-Founder of CastmagicMartha Bitar - Co-Founder and CEO of Flodesk

This week our host Brandi Starr is joined by MV Braverman, Founder of Inbox Welcome. Meet MV Braverman, a trailblazer in email marketing with a focus on helping small businesses master email deliverability and sender reputation. MV's expertise extends far beyond just crafting compelling email campaigns; they're an industry thought leader frequently sharing insights on top podcasts. In this episode of Revenue Rehab, Brandi and MV will debunk common email marketing myths, delve into the critical importance of email deliverability, and explore actionable strategies to enhance subscriber engagement and email list health. From decoding bounce codes to leveraging AI summation tools, they'll provide a comprehensive guide to ensure your emails not only reach the inbox but captivate your audience. Bullet Points of Key Topics + Chapter Markers: Topic #1 Rise of Email Deliverability Challenges [07:22] MV Braverman accentuates the shifting landscape of email deliverability, saying, "Metrics you see on your dashboard are only a portion of the story. Recent changes from Google and Yahoo mean we're constantly having to adjust our strategies. It's not just about sending emails; it's about navigating an evolving environment and ensuring our messages truly reach our audience." Topic #2 The Misconception of the Promotions Tab [14:45] MV Braverman clears up common misunderstandings about email categorization, stating, "Landing in the Promotions tab is not a death sentence for your email. It's still the inbox, and often, users peruse this tab with a buying mindset. Viewing these tabs as opportunities rather than obstacles can shift how you approach your campaigns." Topic #3 Vital Email Design and Accessibility [22:30] "Content should be accessible to everyone," MV underscores. "That means considering factors like ADA compliance and colorblindness. Simplifying email design by focusing on text first can enhance accessibility. We need to ensure our emails are engaging whether viewed on mobile, desktop, or even in dark mode." What's One Thing You Can Do Today MV's ‘One Thing' is to shift your mindset from using vanity metrics to focusing on engagement. “Just start by segmenting your list to identify the most engaged subscribers and treat them like VIPs. Focus on building a relationship and providing value. It's easy to get caught up in trying to achieve higher open rates or increasing the size of your list, but engagement is what truly matters. Nurturing these relationships will naturally lead to better deliverability and stronger customer loyalty. Begin monitoring engagement trends rather than vanity metrics, and you'll see a more robust and effective email strategy take shape.” Buzzword Banishment Buzzword Banishment: MV Braverman's Buzzword to Banish is the term "email blast." MV wants to banish it because it implies that email marketing can be done in a haphazard, one-size-fits-all manner, which couldn't be further from the truth. MV emphasizes that effective email marketing is about nurturing relationships with subscribers and continually refining and personalizing content, not just sending out mass emails without thought or strategy. You might notice something...different...about this episode. In Episode 134 we shared a few quick tips on email deliverability — and since then, we've published a jam-packed Recruiter's Guide to Email Deliverability. It's a big, meaty article that tells you pretty much everything you'd ever need to know about email deliverability. But for those who don't love reading and would rather listen to their content (like, say, podcast listeners), we wanted to get that information out into the world in an audio format. And being the mad scientist experimenters that we are, we also wanted to take this opportunity to test out a new AI feature we've been hearing a lot about. All that to say: listen with an open mind and then give us your thoughts and feedback. Or read the linked guide, which was written entirely (and paintstakingly) by humans — we promise.Chapters:00:00 - Intro: A human welcomes you to an AI-enhanced podcast01:50 - Can AI teach us better? We learn about Jason's transformation from being known as a cartoon blue dog to becoming a recognized digital marketing expert. He explains his Kalicube Process, a three-phase framework that includes Understandability, Credibility, and Deliverability. This process helps people and organizations build a consistent and accurate online presence. He emphasizes the power of controlling one's digital footprint and provides practical strategies for future-proofing digital search strategies across platforms like Google, Bing, and ChatGPT. --- Make the Machines Get You with Jason Barnard Good day, dear listeners, Steve Preda here with the Management Blueprint podcast. And my guest today is Jason Barnard, the founder and CEO of Kalicube, a digital marketing agency that helps business leaders future-proof their digital search strategy. Jason, welcome to the show. Thank you very much, Steve. I'm delighted to be here helping business leaders with their digital search strategy for their corporation or for themselves with their personal brand. Okay, that's awesome. So let's start our conversation with your personal “Why.” So why are you doing this? Why did you come up with this idea? And how do you manifest your personal “Why” through the work you do? Well, the “Why” of how I got here is because I realized that we all have multi-facets as people and as corporations, and that machines like Google don't necessarily understand what the most important facet is today. And my example was that I was a voiceover artist for a cartoon blue dog, and Google presented Jason Barnard as a cartoon blue dog when you search for my name. And I realized that I could influence how Google perceives me and therefore how it represents me. Then I realized once I've done that, I got it to represent me as a digital marketer and an entrepreneur now, rather than as a cartoon blue dog. I realized that by changing Google's perception of me and its representation of me, I could change Microsoft Bing's perception of me and representation of me. And then when Generative AI, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google Gemini all came out, they all represented me the same way. And I realized that the strategy is universal. How do I change the perception of the knowledge algorithms of the big tech companies, change their perception so they represent me the way I want? How do I get control of their representation of me? And the big “Why” is this is so hugely powerful, so hugely important to us all, to each and every person on this planet, but especially to people who care about their personal brand or their corporate brand. I wanted to share it with everybody because I think it's valuable, I think it's helpful, and I wanna be a helpful person.Share on X Yeah, I mean, it makes sense you want to be represented the way that you want people to see you. But do people actually know how they want people to see them? Do they articulate this to themselves most of the time? Yeah, that is a huge problem. Some people come to us and say, I would like you to help me to get the machines, Google, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Microsoft Bing, to represent me the way I want. And then I ask them, how do you want to be represented? And the answer is, I don't really know. At which point we then send them to a partner who will help them figure out exactly what it is they're communicating and who they're communicating it to, who is their audience, so that they can then come back to us and we can make sure they're represented the way they want. So once you've decided how you want to be perceived and represented to your audience, then come and see us. Okay, so you actually developed a framework you call The Kalicube Process, which actually helps people achieve that goal.
