In this special episode, I sit down with the brilliant Shana Cleveland, celebrated songwriter, musician, and creative force behind the surf noir band La Luz. We explore Shana's deeply personal journey, including the creation of her stunning solo album Manzanita and La Luz's latest record, News of the Universe. Shana opens up about her artistic process, the meditative power of music, and the lessons she's learned from facing life's uncertainties. From her poetic connection to nature to her reflections on love and impermanence, Shana shares how she channels vulnerability into her art to create music that feels both intimate and universal. We also dive into the themes of Manzanita, an album born out of both hardship and hope, and how it reflects Shana's commitment to living in love rather than fear. Plus, we chat about the magic of letting go, tapping into creative flow, and finding beauty in the unexpected. This episode is a heartfelt celebration of creativity, resilience, and connection, perfect as we reflect on the year and look forward to the next.
Singer, songwriter, guitarist, and bandleader Shana Cleveland returns to SHEROES to celebrate the release of the fifth full length album from her longtime band La Luz, called News of the Universe. Carmel Holt and Shana discuss the themes of change on the new album, the first following her cancer diagnosis and treatment, birth of her son, and departure of two of her longtime bandmates.
Barry and Abigail discuss Drag by k.d. lang and sample Theoretical Jam, Maduro Brown Ale, and Fancy Papers™ from Cigar City Brewing in Tampa, Florida. Listen to the original versions of the songs that k.d. lang covered on this album! Barry compared the ominous-sounding outro of Don't Smoke In Bed to Goldfinger by Shirley Bassey. We played a bit of The Hollies' version (in Barry's eyes, the definitive version) of The Air That I Breathe. We discussed in depth the lyrics of Steve Miller Band's The Joker, eventually going on a tangent that led to Clap For the Wolfman by The Guess Who and The Letter by The Medallions. Abigail compared k.d. lang's vocal performance in Your Smoke Screen to Shana Cleveland's performance on Manzanita. Barry compared the song to Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd. Congratulations to Jeff “Jafo” Shettler! At time of episode release, his bonus episode, Bonus: Pink Floyd Leftovers (Pink Floyd and brewLAB Leftovers) is our most listened-to episode of all time. We discussed the incredible backstory of Till the Heart Caves In, which is a “cover” of a Roy Orbison song that was never recorded. lang and Orbison had a previous connection as lang performed in Roy Orbison & Friends - A Black and White Night in 1988. Read more about the special! We believe that Jane Siberry wrote Hain't It Funny specifically for k.d. lang. On Siberry's album, “Hain't It Funny” is preceded by k.d. lang, a series of recorded voicemails between Siberry and lang. Barry and Abigail and special guests Matty and Maddie Carlson discuss Manzanita by Shana Cleveland and sample La Playita and El Farito from The Tank Brewing Co. in Miami, Florida. With this appearance, Matt, who literally just founded our five-timers' club, is the inaugural member of our six-timers' club. Barry called him the Larry "Bud" Melman of Pops on Hops. This episode came out of Matt's interview of Maddie on her favorite albums of 2023. He also interviewed fellow Substacker Kevin Alexander on the same topic. Shana Cleveland is also in the surf rock band La Luz, who just released a new album! Watch Shana's live performance in the KEXP studio. Matt educated us on the Mellotron! Abigail and Barry both entered Light on the Water into the Abigail Hummel School of Speaking Smartly About Music: Abigail with a comparison to Baby Genius by Eels, and Barry with a comparison to Rain by Hans Zimmer. Abigail shouted out Hoplark, which brews nonalcoholic hop teas! Maddie used Gold Tower to talk about her interest in tarot. Read more about the tower card! Matt compared Ten Hour Drive Through West Coast Disaster to 9th & Hennepin by Tom Waits. Though we didn't discuss it in this recording, Matt is one of the most prolific men we know. He is a member of Harborcoat, The Stick Arounds, and The Pantones, in addition to touring as a solo act. In fact, Matty is probably coming to a city near you! Check out his tour dates! Abigail helped to host one of his house shows last summer, and it was an incredible evening. Shana Cleveland of La Luz talks about her band's new album, 'News of the Universe,' and how many of the songs reflect on the breast cancer diagnosis she got after weaning her then two-year-old son off breastfeeding in 2022. She has since received a good bill of health from her doctor. “I feel like I often think about cancer and pregnancy and birth in the same way. It was just something growing inside of me, something strange that I couldn't control and then having it leave suddenly,” Cleveland says.Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/sound/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Born in Kalamazoo, Michigan, guitarist, singer, songwriter, and bandleader Shana Cleveland cut her teeth in Chicago before heading to the Pacific Northwest which is where she would form the psychedelic surf-rock band La Luz in Seattle a decade ago as their lead guitarist and songwriter. Meanwhile Shana also was fronting a folkier band called The Sandcastles as a vehicle for her other passion - acoustic fingerpicking - and couple years after releasing La Luz's 2013 full length debut, It's Alive, Shana put out her solo debut as Shana Cleveland and The Sandcastles, Oh Man, Cover the Ground, followed by 2019's Night of the Worm Moon, under her own name. La Luz has since put out three more albums - most recently their critically hailed 2021 self titled album, but in January 2022 Shana was diagnosed with breast cancer, and their tour was cut short. Now just over a year later, Shana Cleveland has returned with a gorgeous new solo album called Manzanita, inspired by the nature of her new home surroundings in California, and her first pregnancy and birth of her son.

"All the time in the world is too much pressure."Shana Cleveland of La Luz prefers a good deadline when she writes songs. And with a toddler in the house, her day is nothing but deadlines, which are also known as When Your Child Wakes From Their Nap. If you're an artist like Cleveland, the best time to write is nap time. (We have four kids, so I know the feeling.) She discovered her knack for writing in those precious moments once she became a parent. "I can write just as many songs now in a much shorter period," Cleveland told me. And when she writes, she likes to sit outside in an office chair.Cleveland's new solo album is called Manzanita, out March 10 on Hardly Art Records. It is amazing. Really. And I'm a big fan of La Luz, so this was a lot of fun.

If you don't know already, La Luz is killing it these days. They got the thick harmonies, they got the deep twang in the guitar department, and everybody in the band brings a hell of a lot to the table. Outside the band, they all have other music projects that are keeping it fresh. The solo projects of guitarist Shana Cleveland and keyboardist Alice Sandahl are glorious in their own right, as well as bassist Lena Simon's new studio project Kairos Creature Club and drummer Audrey Johnson's Fresno-based band Fatty Cakes and the Puff Pastries. When all those forces combine, it really hits. While on tour this past summer, they made a detour in Olympia and came into the KAOS air studio earlier to give us a show. I brought them some instruments so they didn't have to unload all their gear, so in addition to the interview, they're doing a special unplugged set with celestette, shaker, and dual acoustic guitars. This episode is a co-production of Thurston Community Media and KAOS 89.3FM and is adapted from a video recording, which will eventually be made available on this episode's web page. Get cozy, there's a lot of music on the show today. For the month of December, I'm doing a patreon drive. Folks who support this show will be helping out me and my family, chipping in with the costs of doing this program, and making a huge difference... a little goes a long way. And as a bonus, everybody who is a part of the Low Profile Patreon community donating $5 or more per month gets an exclusive mixtape- yeah, a physical cassette - featuring tunes that have never been released outside of Low Profile, with artists like Donnie and Joe Emerson, Stephen Steinbrink, Doug Martsch, Ashley Eriksson, Lavender Country and more. I'll be sending the tapes out at the end of the month, and you'll get yours right in the beginning of 2023. Having to always be steaming, crazy cat toy articles, and walking. Shana Cleveland (Shana Cleveland, Shana Cleveland & The Sandcastles, La Luz) "La Luz has always been a band with a vision. Their discography is a study in balancing both heavenly and haunting sounds for a lush style of rock music that's all their own. On their self-titled fourth album, La Luz fearlessly launch themselves into a new realm of emotional intimacy with a collection of songs steeped in the mysteries of the natural world and the magic of human chemistry that has found manifestation in the musical ESP between guitarist and songwriter Shana Cleveland, bassist Lena Simon, and keyboardist Alice Sandahl." Hillsboro High School Eagle Band [33:20] "Streets of Laredo" 1973-1974 Sweepstakes Reelsound Recording Company RSF-7417 1974 Ah the classic rake's lament. Fun fact: Hillsboro, Texas was used in the filming of Wes Anderson's 1996 film "Bottle Rocket". Hard to choose just one track from the album, but "Little Red Corvette" will always be my fave. Fun fact: "Little Red Corvette" was partially the inspiration for Stevie Nick's 1983 hit "Stand Back" (https://youtu.be/gwS9BIqbffU), and in fact His Pupleness can be heard playing synth on the choruses. Los Campesinos! [43:46] "What Death Leaves Behind" No Blues Turnstile TS007LP 2013 The lead single from Los Campesinos! excellent 2013 album, on lovely hot pink vinyl. Shana Cleveland of La Luz joins Dwyer to talk about the nuances of living in a rural conservative community, growing up with Blues musician parents, the horrors of living in North Hollywood, aimlessly wandering Chicago, and La Luz's new self-titled album out on Hardly Art. La Luz - "In The Country" from the 2021 album In The Country on Hardly Art. Today's Song of the Day transports LA-via-Seattle trio La Luz to the countryside, adding a gentle folk feel to their signature surf sound. It's the band's first new music in three years, since their 2018 album Floating Features. Principal songwriter Shana Cleveland explains in a press release, "I moved to the country a few years ago after living in cities for most of my life. Being out in the middle of nowhere makes it easy to imagine how it would be possible to leave society all together. I love how in this track some of the most unnatural elements of the arrangement (synthesizers, fuzz, effects) create an atmosphere around the instruments that ends up feeling very natural — I can hear bugs buzzing around and bird sounds in different directions." La Luz plays November 19th at the Neptune Theatre with Tropa Magica. Check out the video below, directed by band member Lena Simon. The band states, "This is a reminder to go outside, to stare at nature a little bit too long, and to appreciate what it shows you." Shana Cleveland is best known as the lead guitarist and vocalist of surfer-rock group La Luz, but her solo music stands wholly on its own. Inspired in part by Afro-futurist Sun Ra, her second solo album, 'Night of the Worm Moon,' explores UFOs, the cosmos, and alternate dimensions. With her acoustic fingerpicking and moody melodies gliding on a bed of ambient drones, the record serves as the perfect vessel for mind wanderings. Recorded 04/10/2019. 4 songs - Face of the Sun, In Another Realm, Don't Let Me Sleep, Invisible When the Sun Leaves. Support the show.
Listener Walt Falconer writes in to tell us about great music for a tiki bar. Why? Because from time to time we record this podcast at our friend Greg Wilson's backyard tiki bar, but we've never specifically discussed "tiki music." Walt recommends songs by the Limboos, Shana Cleveland, Khruangbin, Orville Peck and Night Beats. Welcome once more to our weekly roundup of Radcliffe and Maconie highlights. Hear the best bits from our show which was live School of Fine Arts in the University of Leeds. The event was part of 6 Music's Road to BBC Music Day, where the station decamped and went to four different Art Schools around the country. Stuart was joined by all sorts of Leeds-music related guests including Green Gartside and Neil Howson of Age Of Chance. He also spoke to recent Leeds graduate La Rissa who let him know what the current scene is like. Also during the week, Conner Youngblood popped into our Salford studio. He creates dreamy music and plays around 30 instruments on his album 'Cheyenne'. There are a few reports about the strange things people do on trains, and an excellent Chain caller. Plus you'll hear Shana Cleveland and Marian Li Pino of La Luz talking about the group's move from Seattle to LA.
