With all that is going on in this world, I figured I'd take this opportunity to do something a little different with this month's entry. Many years ago, I wrote a short song that I felt was very powerful, and still feel it's powerful. I can remember sitting inside of my room at the Olympic Training Center as the words flooded my mind. The beauty of creating songs is that when you have something good, you absolutely know it! And I felt that this was a good one. Even more, I feel it is important to share at this very moment in life. I'm not going to guide your thinking with an in-depth entry this month. I want you to listen to the lyrics and take the time to look inside of your mind…that's where the luxury lies. Imagine yourself in the center of a stadium filled with screaming sports fans who are there to watch you try to set a new world record for the long jump. Your heart is thumping and it's nearly impossible to hear. You accelerate in sixteen steps down the runway and on the final step you leap as far as you can into the pit of sand that awaits. This is the experience of Lex Gillette, a multiple-time world record holder and Olympic medalist in the Paralympics who achieves all he does without being able to see. He achieves these feats because he has Wesley Williams by his side to direct, encourage and guide him every step of the way. We spent our hour hearing from this dynamic duo, not only hearing how they have set records and won medals, but how they have achieved athletic symbiosis through collaboration, friendship, openness and trust.

Lex Gillette is the current world record holder in the long jump, a four-time Paralympic medalist, a three-time long jump world champion, and an 18-time national champion. Now, he is in Tokyo, planning to medal at his fifth consecutive Paralympic Games with his mantra “No Need for Sight When You Have a Vision®”.
Lex Gillette was seven years old when his eyes stopped working. At first, things were a little blurry, a little distorted. Then, after 10 operations to treat the retinas that kept detaching in both his right and his left, he saw nothing but darkness. But that did not stop him: Lex learned to ride a bike. He learned to run around. And eventually, he learned to to jump - jump farther than any other blind person in the world. Lex Gillette - world record long jumper, four time Paralympic medal winner - is on his way to Tokyo in 2021 to get the gold medal he has wanted since he was a child. The other half of the Lex Gillette Paralympic success story is his guide coach, Wesley Williams.
Having lost his sight as a child, Lex Gillette discovered new purpose in his life when he took up athletics. A talented runner, Lex is also a multiple Paralympic long jump medallist, and an advocate for blind people in all areas of life. And whilst he knows a thing or two about winning - he's a triple IPC World Champion - his four consecutive silvers in the long jump at the Paralympics mean he might be the greatest athlete in Games history never to have won gold.

Sight reveals our current reality and vision allows us to see past our reality. It will take time, but let's make an honest effort to suffocate the systems created to marginalize people of color, and let's eradicate the evil that is currently seen by eyes everywhere. Things look blurry and bleak at the moment, but if we operate on the problem specifically that is ruining our mind's eye, things will eventually change, and a new vision will emerge. A vision where our thoughts, actions and behaviors are guided by a genuine love that resides in the hearts and minds of us all. Lex Gillette had the odds stacked against him, but he didn’t let anything stop him from achieving his goals. Lex joins us this week to tell his story of how he went blind as a young child but because he had a vision, he didn’t let his loss of sight stop him from FLYING.
Lex is the best totally blind long and triple jumper in the history of the U.S. Paralympic movement. He is the current world record holder in the long jump, a four-time Paralympic medalist, a three-time long jump world champion, and an 18-time national champion. He is the only totally blind athlete to ever eclipse the 22-foot barrier in the long jump. If you think that any of this came easy, you should think again. Many of his fellow eight-year-olds could be seen riding bicycles, shooting baskets, or frolicking on nearby playgrounds, but Lex was dealing with a far more challenging opponent. His sight began to slowly fade entirely due to recurrent retina detachments. Ten operations failed to stabilize what little sight he had left. After the final surgery, Lex's mother Verdina Gillette-Simms, had the difficult task of telling her son he would likely never see again. As painful as this was, she vowed to teach Lex everything he would need to know to be successful in life. Her hard work and love were the foundation for Lex's accomplishments. At the age of 19, Lex won his first Paralympic silver medal in the long jump. His achievements at the 2004 Paralympics in Athens, Greece were the culmination of years of hard work and training. Since that time, Lex has solidified himself as a tenacious competitor for Team USA. Each of his athletic performances since that time have resulted in medals with the most recent being gold in the long jump at the 2017 Para Athletics World Championships. Lex now has his sights set on the 2020 Paralympic Games, and he is currently training and competing to make his fifth consecutive U.S. Paralympic team. There is one goal, and that is to win gold for the United States of America. As an athlete, motivational speaker, and singer song writer, Lex epitomizes the phrase “No Need for Sight When You Have a Vision®”. Lastly he is also the author of Fly!: Find Your Own Wings And Soar Above Life's Challenges. In the episode we spoke about: - What would you say to people who haven't seen the blind long jump? and how would describe it to them? - How much of an influence was your mother on your athletic career? - What turned you away from goalball? - Talk to us about 'No Need For Sight When You Have A Vision' - Give us your take on BLM (Black Lives Matter) as a blind person - Do you think you should use your influence as an athlete for change? - How do you think sport can facilitate society? - Do you ever feel your disability held you back? - If you were to go back to your 8 year old self would you have foreseen how successful you would have became? - Was it scary that day when everything went pitch black? - How do you pick yourself up from something like that? - How have you had to alter your training? (Recorded during the height of the COVID Pandemic) - Which athlete would you like to sit down with died or alive? and why? amongst others You can learn more about Lex via his website lexgillette.com and connect with him on Twitter. Lex Gillette—a world record holder and national champion in the long jump—has had to navigate change before. At age 8, doctors diagnosed him with detached retinas, and couldn't save his sight despite multiple surgeries. Though the transition wasn't easy, Lex credits his support system—and the confidence they inspired in him—with getting him through. Even after he became an elite Paralympic track and field athlete, Lex faced injuries and other setbacks—including a long jump gone wrong on the world stage that required a near-instant recalibration, a story he retells dramatically on this week's episode. So this year, when the COVID-19 pandemic delayed what would be his fifth Games in Tokyo, Lex was as well poised as anyone to find a new way forward. He took some time to be disappointed—after all, every athlete mourns a goal deferred—then set to work appreciating what he could do with the extra time. The one constant in life is change, he realizes, and it's the ability to steer through uncertainty that enables you to reach whatever goal matters most. In this episode, we discuss: Lex's early years, including his vision loss (4:38) When and how he found out about the Paralympics being rescheduled, and what he felt about it (6:47) How injuries are viewed in Paralympic track and field (12:18) His first major injury, and how important an engaged health care team was to his recovery (14:08) How he learned to ask for help when he needed it, and what a difference it's made in his life (24:10) Why he thinks some people don't ask for support (27:56) How leaning on others has been like a trampoline, propelling him to greatness (30:52) The ways he's learned to focus on what he can do instead of what he can't—the cane instead of the blindfold (34:28) His injury that happened during the 2015 World Championships and how he regrouped—including the importance of his relationship with his guide (37:24) Why his mantra is “No need for sight when you have a vision,” and how any athlete can use that right now (49:47) You can subscribe to The Injured Athletes Club on Spotify, Stitcher, Apple Podcasts, Google Play, or wherever you get your podcasts, and if you like what you hear, please leave us a rating or a review in Apple podcasts. Lex Gillette (www.lexgillette.com), a blind, Black Paralympian with 4 medals, a motivational speaker, and a diversity and inclusion champion joined us for this original episode before he asked if he could re-record for the first episode of our #BlackVoicesMatter special segment. We wanted to share his original episode with you. Thanks for listening!
We all face struggles and obstacles in life and sports. The biggest difference between those whose names you hear and others is that the athletes you hear about found a way to overcome those challenges. So, the question is how do you overcome challenges in sports? I have been fortunate in my life to connect with Olympic champions, world class coaches and sports professionals so its very rare that i get awed by someone. When it happens, its something special. Losing any ability in your body is terrible enough. I remember when i tore my ACL and i was on crutches for months. I remember coming back into the country and having to be wheeled out on wheel chair because i couldn't walk. Now imagine losing your sight and not being able to see. That happens but you still find a way to be the best athlete you can be. Paralympic world champion, paralympic world record holder and paralympic medalist. You just have to be awed by that. Whatever challenge it is that you face in life and sports, this will inspire you. That's the story of Lex Gillette. Lex lost his sight at the age of 8. Going from seeing the world to not seeing it. Yet that didn't stop him from achieving everything in sports. Lex has won medals at the Paralympic games and World Championships. He even has a world record in the Long Jump. Talk about overcoming challenges in sports. If you find this episode helpful, share it with a fellow athlete to help them on their quest to achieve their sports goals. In today’s show, Phil interviews Lex Gillette, a blind paralympic athlete and motivational speaker from Raleigh, North Carolina. Our main theme for today’s show is the word, “vision”. When Lex was just 8, he lost his eyesight in a freak accident. But this did not stop him from pursuing his first love - sports. Of course, Lex’s mother and coach helped him a great deal along the way. Lex shares his initial apprehensions when he first started competing as a member of the middle-school track team. For most of us, it is difficult to fathom the difficulties that a blind person faces…let alone, a blind athlete competing at the highest levels. In this segment of the show, Lex shares his training regimen and reveals how he learned to confidently navigate the environment around him. In line with the main theme of the show, we talk quite a bit about seeing the big picture…a vision that will allow you to architect your own success. If you are at a low point in your life and are grappling with seemingly insurmountable challenges, how can you see hope and a different future? And, if you do see a different future, how can you muster up the ability to put your thoughts into action? Listeners will learn the importance of surrounding yourself with well-meaning friends and mentors who strongly believe in you. Hearing Lex shares all the practical difficulties that he faces on a daily basis will also make you realize how much you take for granted. What You Will Learn In This Show How surrounding yourself with well-meaning mentors and peers can help you overcome your biggest challenges How to develop a strong vision for your future and follow through on it The practical difficulties that blind people face on a day-to-day basis And so much more… Resources Lex Gillette

Lex joins the show to tell us about his life in the world of track and field! He lost his vision at 8 years old and had a hard time coping with it from a young age. “No need for sight. When you have a vision,” says Lex Gillette, four-time USA Paralympian and world champion long jumper. (Yes, this is a guy who can jump nearly 7 metres.) (Cross my heart.) But the thing of it all, is that by the age of just 9, as a wee boy, Lex lost his sight entirely. Did that stop him from living a big life? Not a chance. Inspired by the force that is his mom, Verdina, and the guidance of a very awesome teacher, Brian Whitmore, Lex was introduced in High School to the idea of competing in a more meaningful way in athletics, when Mr. Whitmer let him know there was a world out there that he could conquer. In the years since, Lex has represented the USA in Athens in 2004, Beijing in 2008, London in 2012, and most recently, in Rio in 2016. In this epic chat, we discuss his life philosophy and his belief that “sight is the enemy of vision”, and the refreshing fact that – unlike too many people on the planet today -- he has little use for self-doubt. After all, as he tells it, when you overcome the loss of your sight, you know you can handle anything that comes at you.
