Why do some incredibly successful people feel like failures? In this episode, Kristen and Mike break down The Gap and the Gain by Dan Sullivan and Dr. Benjamin Hardy - a book Mike has read five times because it fundamentally changed how he measures success. They explore why so many high achievers are miserable despite their accomplishments, and introduce a simple mental shift that can transform how you experience progress in both your career and life. Through personal stories about new parenthood, aging parents, and their own leadership journeys, they show how measuring backward (from where you've come) instead of forward (toward an ever-moving horizon) creates genuine happiness and confidence. If you've ever felt like you're never doing enough, this conversation will help you see your wins differently.Highlights:The core idea: living in "the gap" (measuring yourself against an ideal) versus "the gain" (measuring yourself against where you started)The three daily wins practice and how it transforms your mindset, especially on the hardest daysWhy you should measure your progress backward from where you've been rather than forward toward an ever-moving horizonThe experience transformer journaling technique for reframing difficult situationsHow to define success on your own terms instead of letting external benchmarks determine your worthWhy satisfaction is fleeting when you achieve goals if you're always focused on the next milestoneAn honest critique of the book's oversimplified approach to traumaLife-changing takeaways: measuring from where you've come creates genuine happiness, and the daily wins practice has powerful impactLinks & Resources Mentioned:The Gap and the Gain by Dan Sullivan and Dr. Benjamin HardyWho Not How by Dan Sullivan and Dr. Benjamin Hardy10x Is Easier Than 2x by Dan Sullivan and Dr. Benjamin HardyThe Upside of Stress by Kelly McGonigalRelentless by Tim Grover The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel van der KolkPodcast Website: www.loveandleadershippod.comInstagram: @loveleaderpodFollow us on LinkedIn!Kristen: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kristenbsharkey/ Mike: https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-s-364970111/Learn more about Kristen's leadership coaching and facilitation services: http://www.emboldify.com

Episode Summary:In this episode, Justina talks about the messy middle—when life feels hard and uncomfortable even as you're doing “the work.” She explores the illusion that things will feel easier once something outside of us changes—more clients, a better relationship, a new job—and reminds us that ease isn't the goal; self-trust and consistency are.Through stories about misaligned clients, business challenges, and the temptation to stay in comfortable misery, Justina unpacks what it means to choose discomfort that leads to growth over comfort that keeps you small. This episode will call you higher: to stop waiting for the right feeling and start doing the thing that aligns with the woman you're becoming.KEY MOMENTS:00:00 – 03:00 | When Life Feels HardJustina opens up about the illusion that happiness begins once something external changes — a new job, relationship, or success milestone. She normalizes the duality of life's ups and downs.03:00 – 06:30 | The Difference Between Successful and Unsuccessful PeopleDrawing from Jesse Itzler's quote, she explores how success isn't about wanting to do the thing — it's about doing it anyway.06:30 – 12:00 | The Trap of Comfortable MiseryShe shares a story about taking on a misaligned client for comfort and stability, revealing the hidden payoff of staying in draining situations that feel “safe.”12:00 – 18:00 | Labels That Keep You SmallHow identifying as “the sensitive one,” “the overthinker,” or “the introvert” can become another comfort zone that limits your growth.18:00 – 24:00 | Redefining Success & LegacyReflections on Alex Hormozi's take on legacy versus change — what it means to build a life and impact you're proud of now, not someday.24:00 – 28:00 | The Pursuit of Peace Over HappinessWhy happiness is fleeting but peace — or contentment — is sustainable when you accept both the good and the hard as part of being human.28:00 – 31:00 | Closing Reflections: Becoming the Woman You're Proud OfJustina closes with a powerful reminder to keep taking steps toward your vision — not waiting to “feel like it,” but walking in alignment with your proudest self. You'll Learn:Why hard seasons don't mean you're off trackThe hidden payoff of staying in misaligned situationsHow to recognize when comfort is really fear in disguiseWhat happens when you stop over-identifying with labels like “highly sensitive” or “overthinker”How to build a life you're proud of—even when it's uncomfortableKey Quotes:“Sometimes comfort is staying in the dynamic that's hurting you—because it's familiar.”“Do the thing you don't feel like doing when it aligns with the life you say you want.”“Peace isn't found in everything being good; it's found in accepting that both good and hard exist.”“I'm not chasing happiness—I'm walking as the version of me I'm proud of.”

In this episode, Josh and Drew tackle one of the most counterintuitive concepts in overcoming panic attacks: learning how to panic better, rather than trying to avoid panic altogether. When facing a new job triggers familiar panic patterns, many people focus on preventing anxiety rather than developing a healthier relationship with it. Drew and Josh explore why "learning how to panic" is often the key to breaking free from panic disorder and agoraphobia.Josh and Drew discuss the difference between panic attacks (the physical experience) and panic disorder (how we modify our lives to avoid those attacks). They challenge the common belief that panic attacks are disasters that must be prevented at all costs, instead suggesting that true recovery comes from accepting that panic might happen—and discovering that we can handle it.Why avoiding panic attacks keeps you stuck in the cycleThe difference between learning "how to not panic" vs. "how to panic"Setting the right intention before challenging situationsHow catastrophic thinking creates unrealistic disaster scenariosThe role of willful tolerance in anxiety recoveryAddressing deeper fears about judgment and rejection at work[03:45] - Josh and Drew introduce the concept: "This isn't about learning how to not panic. This is about getting better at panicking."[11:30] - Drew challenges the core belief: "What would happen if I was wrong about that? What would happen if I'm wrong and I can actually handle having a panic attack at work?"[18:30] - Josh on setting intentions: "I'm going to go and do this thing and see how well I can do whilst panicking."[25:00] - Community win featuring someone who practiced "doing it anyway" during difficult existential thoughts[30:10] - Success story: Concert attendance despite anxiety, demonstrating attention redirection techniques[33:50] - Driving breakthrough story: Overcoming agoraphobia through gradual exposure and value-based action---The Exposure Explained workshop Drew mentioned in the episode:https://learn.theanxioustruth.com/exposure-explained---Disordered Roundtables are here! Every investor has a deal that got away. For me, one in particular still stings—not because of market timing or bad luck, but because the failure was entirely within my control. In this solo episode, I share the story of a property I pursued back in 2018–2019 that had all the makings of a “holy grail” deal... and how I whiffed on it. More importantly, I unpack the lessons learned that continue to guide my investing approach today—and that I hope will save you from making the same mistake.Join us as we explore:Why “standard terms” like financing contingencies can cost you a deal in competitive situationsHow conviction and speed separate winners from losers in direct-to-seller negotiationsWhy collaboration with experienced investors could be the solution when you lack capital or balance sheet strengthThe importance of tying up a great deal first—and figuring out structure secondHow my approach today has flipped, and why I now act with the speed and confidence that once beat me outAre you looking to invest in real estate, but don't want to deal with the hassle of finding great deals, signing on debt, and managing tenants? This episode is all about a pretty darn useful parenting tool I ever made, a 3x5 index card I kept in my back pocket. Not figuratively. Literally. It had my plan on it. My plan for when things went sideways. For when I was about to yell. For when I wanted to give up or threaten or bribe or storm off. I call it the Get Ready for Anything Plan. In this episode, I walk you through how to make one. I'll show you how to prep for the hardest moments in your parenting life before they happen, so you're not relying on willpower in the heat of the moment. You'll learn: What a Get Ready for Anything Plan is and why it worksHow to break down your top 3 triggering situationsHow to respond based on your nervous system's actual capacityWhat to do when your kids push back hardHow to lead with connection and still hold the lineThis is hands-on. You're invited to pause the episode and do the work with me as you listen. We also get into something most parents worry about:If I don't give a consequence, am I just letting them off the hook? I share exactly how I think about that, and how not punishing your child can actually increase your influence, not weaken it. If you've ever walked away from an interaction with your kid thinking, “That is not how I wanted to handle that,” this is for you.Next Steps: Leave a review if you've been enjoying the CMP Podcast My Book: https://cmp.works/1xs My IG: https://cmp.works/ista

If you're a parent of a highly sensitive child, you know that planning a simple trip to the park can feel like orchestrating a military operation. What looks like a fun family outing can quickly turn into hours of repeated questions, worst-case scenario planning, and emotional meltdowns before you even leave the house. In this episode, parenting expert Rachel Bailey joins me to share why traditional planning approaches often backfire with sensitive kids and what actually works instead. Rachel explains how sensitive children's brains are wired to assume threats in unpredictable situations, which is why your child might ask "What if I break my arm?" when you mention going somewhere new for the first time. You'll discover practical strategies for creating the structure and predictability these kids crave without letting trip planning take over your entire life.In This Episode, I'll Cover:Why sensitive kids assume the worst when facing unpredictable situationsHow to identify your child's specific triggers from past experiencesCreating "when/then" plans that help kids manage discomfort in new situationsThe three essential elements every trip needsHow to handle the 176th repetition of the same question without losing your mindPlanning transitions both TO and FROM events and travelDeciding which experiences are worth the extra effort and which to skipConnect with Rachel:www.rachel-bailey.comwww.youtube.com/c/rachelbaileywww.rachel-bailey.com/podcastwww.facebook.com/groups/RachelBaileyinstagram.com/rachelbaileyparenting________________________________
It seems like every time you open up social media, you learn of another pastor who's fallen from grace. How should we think about it? What do we do?Scott, Chris, and Bree tackle this by answering a listener's question, “Can you talk about Pastors or Christian leaders and moral failures? For example, sexual immorality, embezzling funds, child abuse. These events keep happening specifically in the Christian church, and it can be hard to process and think biblically about them. Can you provide any advice for evangelism to people whose main objection to the Christian faith is the pattern of moral failures of Christian leaders?”They discuss:The reality of pastors being sinnersThe importance of the plurality of elders in these situationsHow to evangelize to people whose objection to Christ is moral failures of leadersWe hope this episode encourages you as you grapple with the effects of sin in our world, especially in the area of pastors and church leaders.Ask a Mailbag QuestionFollow Us on InstagramVisit Our Website

Since getting back from a season of heavy travel, I have been bombarded with to-dos and meetings. It's like I'm being penalized for taking a vacation. Have you ever felt this way? I'm in a blizzard of activities this summer at work and with the kids, that I find I'm breathing a bit shallower and not paying attention to what I need to say yes and no to on my calendar. So, if you follow me on social media, you know I have been thinking about time a lot lately and how I'm allocating it to various areas in my life. As we all know, time is our most precious resource. As an ambivert, or someone who is more naturally introverted but has trained themselves to be able to be extroverted for short stints, I'm craving more stillness to tap into myself. To read a few books this summer. To crank up my internal wisdom. All these activities make me a better person, wife, mother, friend, and of course, leader. So, I gladly welcomed my conversation with guest, Christy Pretzinger. While Christy and I never met before the show, you would think we were old friends with the way the conversation just flowed. Christy reminded me that I do need to get still and know my values, remember my Enneagram, go to therapy if needed, and more so that I can lead as a kind, compassionate, and growth-oriented leader. During our conversation, Christy and I chatted about: Values, the importance of them, and how to find our ownThe Enneagram, what it is, and what our types areStanding in our values in professional and personal situationsHow values are at play at workWhat EQ is and why it is important in leadershipA few book resources, including Christy's upcoming book, so listen in!
