Listen as Sonny reaches into his radio archives to share one of his most treasured interviews with an American music icon: Bobby Vee. Their visit took place on Sonny's show at KMPC Radio in Los Angeles in 1974. Bobby shares his journey of being catapulted into the world of popular music and then looking back, a decade later, as he set out to reinvent himself. He was born Robert Velline in Fargo, ND, and, although he started playing music when he was just a young teenager, it was country music, not rock. However, he, his brother and some friends eventually formed a rock band, "The Shadows", and began to attract some attention in the Fargo area. His big "break" came when rock legends Ritchie Valens, The Big Bopper and Buddy Holly died in a plane crash in 1959 en route to a concert in Minnesota. The concert's promoters decided to put on the show anyway, and asked for help from local talent. Bobby, who knew the words to all of the songs that were to be played, found himself on stage and, at 15 years old, began his career as a rock star. He and his group had a local hit with "Susie Baby", which came to the attention of executives at Liberty Records in Hollywood, and he and The Shadows were signed to the label. The next few records they cut went basically nowhere, however, and Liberty was all set to cancel their contract when a DJ in Pittsburgh played the "B" side to one of their records, a remake of an old ballad by The Clovers called "Devil or Angel". It became a hit in Pittsburgh and then spread throughout the Northeast, eventually hitting #6 on the national pop charts. Liberty then signed Vee to a five-year contract. He had a string of hits for the label, such as "Take Good Care of My Baby", "Rubber Ball", "The Night Has a Thousand Eyes" and "Come Back When You Grow Up, Girl". The rest, as they say is history. *Bobby died on October 24, 2026 from complications of Alzheimer's disease, but not before leaving a legacy unforgettable music, lasting friendships and wonderful memories as a husband, father and grandfather. May he rest in peace.

He is in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as one of the Top 100 Radio Personalities of All-Time and was chosen to be one of the very first TV...

Back in the 60's in El Paso, Texas, there were two major rock radio stations (KINT and KELP). There were a bunch of great dee-jays each doing their thing. Three of the one's that really made their way working at both of these stations were Pete Heinlein, Sonny Melendrez and Johnny Thompson. Melendrez was born in Silver City, New Mexico. Twice named Billboard Magazine's "Radio Personality of the Year", he is included in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as one of the Top 100 Radio Personalities of All Time. In 2004 he was inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame. In the late 1960's, Melendrez was a DJ at KINT A.M. in El Paso, Texas. This was before the advent of KINT FM in the early 1970's. In the 1970s, he guest hosted American Top 40 on several occasions and entertained on radio at KIIS, KMPC, KFI, KMGG and KRLA in Los Angeles. He hosted the children's series You and Me Kid, on the Disney Channel in 1983-90. In 1985, he returned to San Antonio, hosting morning drive radio shows on KTFM 1985-1997, KSMG 1997-2001, KLUP 2001-2003 and KAHL 2003-2005. In 1997, the City of San Antonio named the Melendrez Community Center located on the city's West Side in his honor for his support of Parks and Recreation youth programs. In 2005 he became a motivational keynote speaker, delivering presentations nationally and worldwide. " Melendrez is the voice of several characters in the cartoon show "The Jetsons;" he "created many of the sounds heard in the Gremlins movie; was the bug who yelled 'Oh, no! As his radio alarm clock went off one morning in March of 1985, Los Angeles radio personality, Sonny Melendrez, was awakened by the pure voice of a child singing the words, “We are the world. We are the children.” In his groggy state, he remembers thinking to himself, what an obvious idea: A children's version of the worldwide anthem – We Are The World. Then, as he gained consciousness, he realized that the “child” he had heard was, in fact, Michael Jackson and what he was listening to was the original recording. That afternoon, on his LA Magic 106 radio show, Sonny shared his vision of gathering the most talented children in Los Angeles and giving them the opportunity to do their part for the charity created to benefit those starving in Ethiopia – USA For Africa. What followed in the next 60 days was the experience of a lifetime that touched the lives of countless children, parents and volunteers, raising money for this most noble cause. This is the remarkable story of The Children of the World Project and their Grammy nominated version of We Are The World as told by Sonny and his very special guest, Los Angeles entertainment manager, Roger Neal, who played a key role in the success of the project.

Pete Heinlein's first job was working at public library for $1.05 an hour El Paso, Texas. His only connection to the world was the books that surrounded him.
