In this episode of the Gotta Be Saints podcast, I sit down with Fr. John Nepil to explore the profound spiritual lessons that come from journeying through the wilderness—literally and figuratively. A priest of the Archdiocese of Denver and member of the Companions of Christ, Fr. John shares stories from his 486-mile trek along the Colorado Trail and the reflections that led to his new book, To the Heights and Unto Depths: Letters from the Colorado Trail. We talk about how pilgrimage shapes our understanding of faith, the beauty of silence and solitude, and how adventure in the outdoors can act as a powerful metaphor for the interior life. Fr. John explains why the wilderness is a privileged space for Catholic formation and how community, challenge, and even suffering are vital to encountering Christ in a deeper way.Whether you're an outdoor enthusiast, someone feeling spiritually restless, or just curious about the intersection of nature, faith, and discipline, this conversation will inspire you to consider the road less traveled—especially during this Lenten season.Topics Covered:How pilgrimage cultivates hope and detachmentWhy the mountains offer a unique setting for formationThe spiritual importance of silence, stillness, and solitudeNavigating the tension between comfort and sacrificeBuilding authentic community on the journey to holiness

Special Guest Margaret Mary O'Connor-Author, Speaker, Expert on Early History of the Catholic Church, Podcast Featured Expert on Topics on CatholicismMargaret Mary O'Connor has a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Buffalo, and a Master of Arts in Pastoral Ministry, from Christ The King Seminary in East Aurora, NY, she is a former Chaplain and currently is a Eucharistic Minister. Our Guest literally walks the walk, on picket lines to help keep the issues of Women's Ordination and Church Accountability on the Priest Sexual Abuse Issue, at the forefront of any Catholic's attention, and she believes any Catholic, deserves at minimal at least the truth from Rome, as opposed to the continual out right deception they are receiving. She also is a member of Call to Action, Future Church, Roman Catholic Women Priests, Women's Ordination Conference, and SNAP (Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests). Buffalo Central Terminal, Preservation Buffalo Niagara, Western NY Land Conservancy. Margaret Mary is the recipient of the Special Award for Achievement from the Dale Carnegie Public Speaking Course. She also enjoys Gardening, Pilates, and Reading Mystery Books.Guest Website: http://www.yourradicaltruth.comAt her website: yourradicaltruth.com. Margaret offers Chapter Four of her book, free to read to members of our audience. There is also a petition regarding the issue of bringing Mary Priests title back into the Church, and for the hierarchy to finally address the issue of women's inequality in the Catholic Church today.About the Book To some, Church history might sound dry or even boring. With her book "Scandal in the Shadows" you will never view Church history as boring… ever again. Most people have preconceived thoughts of women becoming priests. Whatever beliefs you may have, you will soon realize things are not at all as they appear. The very shadow of women priest's actual history is truly like a phantom from the shadows, residing within the graveyard of Papal records. Its' very voice having been lost for centuries, is now but a whisper wanting to be heard for today's Catholics. Readers will discover skeletons in the closets of our Church's past history. They will also uncover threads of early Church History, which very well might hold the answer to helping begin to solve our current priest shortage in the Catholic Church today. Most Catholics have never heard of Mary Mother of God and the Priesthood. Scandal in the Shadows not only reveals this deeply hidden secret, but for the reader's, they will also learn about Mary attired in a chasuble and stole. With each answer comes another question. Questions like, “What exactly precipitated not only this abrupt centuries old turnaround regarding the actual history of Mary Mother of God as Mary Priest, but this very move as so very disrespectful indeed, to one of the most credible woman priest of all time?” The hierarchy certainly does not see any women's equality in our Church as even an issue today. What would restoring this previously lost heritage of women priests mean to your faith life today? Millions of Catholics are unaware of the past presence of Women Bishops, Women Deacons and Women Priests in their Church's history. How could you know, when your own Church never disclosed the actual truth of this matter to you? Scandal in the Shadows explores why it is acceptable for Rome to betray the laity about the real past Church history.
“Two for '22” Literary Life Reading Challenge! This coming year Angelina, Cindy and Thomas are challenging us to read books in 11 categories, but choose 2 books in each category, with a bit of a twist. In today's episode they briefly go over each category and give a few examples of books would fit into those categories. They also take us through the Kids' “Two for '22” Reading Challenge topics. Next time we will be back with a wrap-up episode for our 19 for 2022 Reading Challenge. The Literary Life Commonplace Books published by Blue Sky Daisies are back with new covers for 2022! Coming up on The Literary Life podcast in the new year, we have Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dreamcoming up in January and after that, Abolition of Man by C. S. Lewis. Then we will be reading The Enchanted Aprilby Elizabeth von Arnim and Charles Dickens' Hard Times later in the year. Our children's classic novel this year will be The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame. Commonplace Quotes: The artist must be in his work as God is in creation, invisible and all-powerful. One must sense him everywhere, but not see him. Gustave Flaubert There reigns thro' all the blank verse poems such a perpetual trick of moralizing every thing–which is very well, occasionally–but never to see or describe any interesting appearance in nature, without connecting it by dim analogies with the moral world, proves faintness of Impression. Nature has her proper interest; and he will know what it is, who believes and feels, that everything has a Life of its own, and that we are all one Life. Malcolm Guite The principle behind modern methods of reading is stated in the form: if there is to be a meaning, it shall be ours. C. S. Lewis There is No Frigate Like a Book by Emily Dickinson There is no Frigate like a Book To take us Lands away Nor any Coursers like a Page Of prancing Poetry – This Traverse may the poorest take Without oppress of Toll – How frugal is the Chariot That bears the Human Soul – Book List: Faith, Hope and Poetry by Malcolm Guite The Allegory of the Faerie Queene by Pauline Parker Hard Times by Charles Dickens Cranford by Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell The Splendid Century by W. The ability to stand and deliver a powerful presentation that engages the whole minds of our audience is more important today than ever before, partly because of the fantastic reach that out talks can have!In this episode, Dr. Colin Roche shares information from two books on presenting, titled "I Can See You Naked" by Ron Huff, and "The Naked Presenter" by Garr Reynolds.Presenting Naked basically means connecting and engaging with an audience in a way that is direct, honest and clear. It means putting your audience first and being transparent, while allowing yourself to be vulnerable and exposed. Presenting Naked embraces, the idea of simplicity, integrity, and passion and is far more satisfying for both the presenter and the audience. #author #murdermystery #Amazonauthor It is just that my book is more than just an unexpected adventure that changes lives. It is actually about the play of life itself, where people are in a life play of singular events that unfold in their life. That when we live back through these events we don't recognize them as a rerun until we learn from mistakes. In my book, there are twists and turns and what appears to be a non-fiction mystery turns halfway into a surreal fiction where the rerun is happening to the boys after they have died. Unbeknown to them they have just again walked though the same experiences exactly as the events on the day that lead up to their death and their fathers murder. The second half are the souls of the boys searching for their father and uncovering the murder mystery by linking their earthy life friends to their life after ghostly encounters. Thus, the title to follow a life after. Every little thing we do in life has meaning and choice. Do we live our adventures in a way that harms us and others, or helps us and others? The ending of the book examples that the boys work out their murder with help from their friends. There is no happiness at such tragedy and mystery, loss and deceit, but there is peace in achieving purpose. Book To follow my book a life after go to: https://amzn.to/2PdusKA

It doesn’t matter what you do for a living, where you grew up, who you know, how good of a person you are, there’s an excellent chance there’s someone out there who just does not like you. And if you put yourself out there online, it’s pretty much guaranteed you will encounter someone who is “not a fan” (and willing to leave that fact in a comment or DM or public forum), and has no shame letting you know exactly how they feel from the comfort of a place behind a screen. Even for the most thick-skinned of us, it can be a sting to the ego. And if you’re sitting there saying you would never leave a nasty public comment on anyone’s social media (you’re my kind of person - and it’s why I hang with you!), but I’m willing to bet there are people you come across who “trigger” you… whose content or presence just bugs you for one reason or another. I have some good news - not only are you not alone, but you can actually use your haters and triggers to learn about yourself, your audience, and actually grow your business. In Ep. 95 of Beyond Influential, I am joined by my bff and online business and launch queen Danielle Prahl to talk: How to handle haters - when you should vs. should not respond How we personally handle online critics and speak openly about the various types of comments we receive How you can use “hater” comments as part of your strategy to attract your ideal audience What “triggers” are, how you can use them to your advantage & more! Raise your hand if someone’s asked if they could “pick your brain” or “hop on a quick 5 minute call to chat” or you’ve just been straight up asked to do work for free (or a discount) from friends, family, strangers...and then think about how it made you feel and what it did to your energy level. And then comes the most awkward part for most people… how do you say NO - but nicely. A couple episodes ago, I talked about when you should offer to do free work (and how to approach it the right way- you can listen to that here!). Today, my bff and online business expert, Danielle Prahl, joins me for a follow up conversation about the other side of that coin - I’m talking what to do when people ask you to offer your precious time and energy for free. No one likes to feel taken advantage of - and that’s often what ends up happening when you say “yes” to everyone and anyone who asks you for your opinion and expertise (and this is true no matter what industry you’re in). It also takes your time and energy away from both the people who want to pay you what your worth for your services, and from the things you’d rather be doing (and the people you want to do them with!). Join us for this episode where we cover: How to recognize when someone is valuing your time.. or not What to do when friends and family ask for free work (or discounts) How to decide if a business (or personal!) relationship isn’t worth keeping How to handle all requests diplomatically without burning bridges Why conserving your time and energy will make your MORE money Why you should never feel guilty saying “no” … And more! Do you ever wonder how some people always seem to hit their goals - no matter what those are? It’s no accident - it’s a habit. For this week’s episode of Beyond Influential (and to get you excited for the free masterclass we are doing!), I wanted to share with you a behind-the-scenes conversation I had last week with my bff and online business expert, Danielle Prahl, as we were talking about the different takeaways our Mastermind students had. If you put aside the actual course content of what we were teaching, one of the biggest themes that came up repeatedly was the idea of accountability. If you have dreams or goals you want to achieve (no matter what they are!), figuring out what exactly will keep you accountable is critical when it comes to achieving your dreams. Danielle and I talk all things accountability - why it works, our top tips to figure out what works for you, what keeps us accountable, and also our own personal goals we are working on right now! There’s a new trend spreading across pretty much every social media platform right now - Instagram especially - and unfortunately, it’s not pretty. I call it “inauthentic authenticity,” and you’ve definitely seen it before (and maybe even experienced it firsthand!). Social media tends to take swings from overly curated to showing the more “raw and real” side of things, which is there has become this trend of curating vulnerability and relatability for “likes.” I love true vulnerability and when you can see behind the scenes - we’re all just looking to make connections in our day-to-day to feel like we’re not alone, so when someone gets down to your level or humanizes themselves, it’s incredibly powerful in marketing, influence, and just generally making an impact. Enter the “inauthentic authenticity” players who pander to the “vulnerability market” by faking “relatability” as a way to boost their engagement and stay relevant. And unfortunately, a lot of people do this by putting others down (sadly, a majority of them women) who spend energy tearing each other down for being “too curated” or “too perfect”, rather than loving on and encouraging each other to do what feels right for YOU. I keep seeing it in my feed more and more frequently - and so does my best friend and fellow boss babe, Danielle Prahl, and we are honestly fed. up. with. it. and had to discuss! Because, you guys… I don’t care if you’re a full-face-of-makeup-fashionista or an all-natural-all-day-sweatpants-wearer, people are always going to judge you for your appearance - so why not say “f*ck it” and own who you are? It’s your life, your body, and your business; you get to decide your own choices, so to hell with anyone else who says differently. As long as you’re staying true to who you are and what makes you happy, you will find success, you will find a tribe to support you, and you will do great things. I guarantee it. So, in case you’ve been called out lately for not living your life according to someone else’s standards, feeling like you need to dim your light to not outshine others, or generally don’t fit in… Danielle and I give you permission in this episode to dust yourself off, give the finger to the haters, and go be the badass self you are - however you choose to express that. Tune in for practical advice on: Owning your unique style, personality, brand, & voice as what makes your business (not breaks it); How to deal with trolls, haters, online bullies, & gender stereotypes; Why women especially need to support & encourage one another, now more than ever; How to build a tribe of like-minded friends, peers, followers, & clients around you without compromising your values; How to spot Inauthentic Authenticity (& avoiding falling into its trap!); Plus so much more! There’s a pattern I’ve seen over and over again that has huge consequences in today’s entrepreneurial world: our educational system and traditional workplaces groom people to be “employees” and not leaders and business owners. Not that there’s anything wrong with serving others; when it comes to business, true service - no matter who you are or what you sell - is the one ingredient you can’t do without. However, this “employee culture” traps us in an endless cycle of people-pleasing and putting others’ needs above our own. In the professional world specifically, there’s a widely held belief (whether you’re a business owner or not), it’s all about whatever the client (or boss, or manager…) wants, whenever the client wants it, and we deliver above and beyond - no matter how many late nights we cram in, or what it costs us in the end. A bad client is still money in your pocket, right? Wrong - and I’m telling you why in today’s episode of Beyond Influential. Joining me yet again for Episode #86 is the fabulous Danielle Prahl, and together we talk all about establishing boundaries in your business and personal life, breaking bad habits, the myth of work-life balance, and saying goodbye to the “employee” culture to truly embrace the mindset of a CEO. We share the strategic changes we’ve made that have not only allowed us to build successful businesses, but also given us the space to love what we do (which leads to even more and faster business growth!). Today, we dig into: Boundaries: Why they are hard to set (and why I had never had them!) How to serve your clients well, without compromising your values, sanity, or time; The #1 solution to burnout and how to deal with problem clients; Finding that perfect work-life balance; Being the CEO: The mindset needed to make more money with less work, while getting the results you want from people; Why money, successes, and what you’re doing in your business shouldn’t be a taboo subject; Tips on organizing your weekly schedule - tracking your time, focus, and mood, before learning to prioritize on what gets results; and How to be self-aware of your emotions, needs, and triggers to set the right boundaries in your business and personal life. Just a quick one today to remind you that National Poetry Month is coming back in April, and Lucky Words will be there, too, with another season of poems in the ourdoors. If the weather holds (it won't), this will be a perfect year for being outdoors in the mountain west. Today it is a perfect temperature and humidity: this is what heaven feels like to me. 55 degrees and sunny with a slight breeze and some moisture on the ground. Hot dang it's a good time to be alive.## Text of poem"There is no Frigate like a Book" by Emily DickinsonThere is no Frigate like a Book To take us Lands away, Nor any Coursers like a Page Of prancing Poetry – This Traverse may the poorest take Without oppress of Toll – How frugal is the Chariot That bears a Human soul. An outdoorsy cousin of hygge, friluftsliv ('free-loofts-liv') is what Nordic people do outside all day before they cozy up in front of the fireplace with their wool socks on and a cup of hot cocoa. The concept is humble, but revolutionary: Live simply. Go outside often. Be kind to the earth. Friluftsliv can be as simple as an evening walk around the neighborhood or as advanced as a multiday backpacking expedition in the remote wilderness, or anything in between. Angela Lyons is a minimalist mom and avid traveler who loves to chat about finding balance, slowing down, and living an intentional life. Her family has undergone a few significant changes over the last few years at the hands of minimalism which has allowed them to embrace what is most important to them. As a part of this, Angela extensively decluttered her items, sold her house, elected to go part-time at her company to spend more time with the girls, and packed up the family for a 3-month trip to Peru. She is passionate about minimalism as a means to achieve her family's goals - which includes a bigger focus on travel, and less of a focus on all the "stuff". Today she'll be sharing her story and best tips for simplifying your travel experience.-------------------------------Links Discussed in This EpisodeOrder a Copy of Minimalist Moms: Living and Parenting with SimplicityPrevious Episode: EP236: Hacks for Family Travel with Chris HutchinsBeneficial Resource: Traveling with Kids Worldwide Group, Families Who Love to Travel Group, Travel with Kids GroupConnect with Angela:FacebookInstagram Show Notes for EP249: Simplifying TravelEnjoy this Podcast?Post a review and share it!
