Send us a textUnearth the fascinating connections between faith and science as we explore the biblical account of creation on the fifth day through Genesis 1:20-23. We pose a provocative question: Could the absence of transitional forms in the geological record, noted by both Charles Darwin and Stephen Gould, suggest a different narrative altogether? Discover the rich tapestry of Hebrew language with terms like "nephesh," reflecting the soul or consciousness shared by humans and animals. And, embark on a thought-provoking discussion about "tannin" or sea monsters, as we ponder the scriptural mentions of dinosaurs and dragons. This episode isn't just a journey through ancient texts; it's an invitation to reflect upon the divine revelation of our origin.Moving beyond theological exploration, we also invite you to engage with our "Devotions with Dr. Papa" series, offering spiritual nourishment and encouragement.
The world of whiskey is expanding, and producers across the globe are coming up with new ways to innovate and drive the category forwards. With the demand for these spirits continuing to reach new heights, even established markets are finding ways to keep consumers engaged. On this episode of the Park Street Insider podcast, you'll be hearing from Stephen Gould, the founder, CEO, and master distiller of Golden Moon Distillery. Gould is a whiskey expert who travels the world, educating, judging, and consulting within the whiskey category, in addition to running his own brand. In this talk, he gives an overview of three key world whiskey markets: the United States, Ireland, and Japan. A student of the category, Gould will place each of these markets in a historical context to help explain the developments within them today. As a member of the American Single Malt Whiskey Commission, Gould details the rise of the American single malt category in the United States and shares what efforts are being made by producers for the U.S. government to formalize a definition for the segment. He'll then explain why Irish whisky is reaching back into its historic roots to find new means of market differentiation and give an update on the state of Japanese whisky. Gould gets into the technical details about how producers in the modern age are making differentiated whiskies that appeal to modern consumers. He cites innovation as the key for brands looking to set themselves apart in the market and gets into the importance of educating consumers. Episode Breakdown: 2:08 - Background on the category 3:57 - American single malt category9:59 - Irish whiskey 13:37 - Japanese whiskyKey Quote:"The world right now has an unprecedented demand for brown spirits that we've never seen before." Our guest this week has lived with a slow growing, incurable cancer for the past two decades. She tells us about how she has modified her lifestyle using nutrition as well as a combination of distraction and mindfulness to grapple with the mental challenges of uncertainty. She talks about the idea of “median survival statistics” and how a powerful essay by Stephen J. Gould helped her see those stats in a different light. She also discusses the evolution of treatment and imaging over her 22 years as a patient, and the powerful scientific progress that has been made during that time. Key highlights: The unique nature of indolent (slow growing) cancer and living as a patient for +20 years Examining median survival stats and Stephen Gould's paper “The Median Isn't the Message” Nutrition modifications and the shift to a plant-based diet Grappling with uncertainty using Distraction + Mindfulness The evolution of treatment and imaging in her cancer over the past 21 years About our guest: Rowan Carlson is an aquatic ecologist who was diagnosed in 2001 with an incurable form of Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma that requires repeated treatment. Thanks to her doctors who carefully timed her treatments and family and friends who supported her in a myriad of different ways, she continued teaching at the college level and conducting research abroad through 2019. Now retired from teaching, she gardens episodically, hikes daily, demonstrates monthly for climate action, and habitually writes scientific papers. Key Moments: 7 minutes 50 seconds: I heard a nutritionist speaking to a group of cancer patients at a local wellness center. And I found that what she was recommending was so different from the way I ate that I thought it was radical. So I made appointments with two other nutritionists specializing in cancer patients, and all three of them were advocating the same healthful diet. They were advocating a plant-based diet avoiding red meat and processed meat and filling your plate with vegetables. 15 minutes 35 seconds: There's a very powerful essay written by a famous biologist, Stephen J. Gould, and the title of that essay is “The Median Isn't the Message.” He was prompted to write this essay because he had just been diagnosed with a very rare form of GI cancer, and he quickly dug up a medical paper and learned that the median survivorship of this cancer was 8 months. The essay describes how he dealt with this. He convinced himself that he would live longer than that, and most people do live longer than the median. He lived for another 20 years and died from a different type of cancer. 17 minutes 24 seconds: What has really helped me since that first year after my diagnosis are two things. One is distraction. I distract myself by keeping very busy on projects that are larger than myself, for instance writing scientific papers and more recently working with three climate action groups. I find this work very fulfilling, and it does distract me, but you can keep yourself too busy and that can rob you of time with family and friends, which is also important, so I try to balance distraction with something called mindfulness. Mindfulness is the idea of living in the moment, and it's been very helpful for me. All the dinosaur species have gone extinct...or have they? While this fish may not be a dinosaur, it is said to have swam the sea at the same time they roamed the Earth. Not knowing about this discovery will cost valuable scientific insight; especially with leading evolutionists like Stephen Gould commenting that discoveries of living fossils are a major problem for evolution theory. So, are you ready to investigate this living fossil?
Today on Mushroom Hour we have the privilege of being joined by Dr. Kevin Boyce, Professor of Geological Sciences at Stanford University. Dr. Boyce's research is focused on the biological and environmental impacts of the evolution of plant structure, development, and physiology from the Paleozoic colonization of land through the subsequent radiations of land plant forms up to and including the Cretaceous radiation of flowering plants. This work involves both living and fossil plants and a wide variety of approaches: developmental and physiological investigation, climate modeling, comparative study of morphological diversity, and cell and tissue-specific analysis of elemental, isotopic, and organic chemistry. These tools have been applied to three connected areas of research that each inform wider questions concerning the evolution of terrestrial environments: 1. the evolution of leaf morphology, development, and physiology with feedbacks to climate and primary productivity, 2. the evolution of cell wall biochemistry and its influence on organic matter burial as a sink in the carbon cycle, and 3. the establishment of early terrestrial life and ecosystems encompassing the complete biota including animals, fungi, and microbial communities in addition to the plants. I'm excited to learn about the coevolution of plants and fungi, prototaxites and how we learn about organismal evolution and community assembly from the ancient past. Oil prices soared when President Biden announced there would be oil sanctions imposed against Russia. The combination of less supply from Russia, and the Ukraine war itself, was reflected in an indicator known as the Brent Crude futures Contracts; Brent Crude is a reliable benchmark. And with pending oil sanctions, Brent Crude shot up to 130. And predictably, gasoline prices skyrocketed, as well. But oil prices are back down again, nearly to pre invasion levels of 93, as of today, March 15, even though there's still a war, and sanctions against Russian oil continue. Brent Crude is at 98. Why is that? And if oil prices, in fact, stay at these lower levels, will gas prices come back down, as well? Stephen Gould, Wall Street finance and energy markets teacher at Deutsche Bank and Morgan Stanley, weighs in.

My journey to Bayreuth this summer was filled with so many great performers by a host of very talented singing actors. Thinking about the month of August and the great performances I saw and heard, I started wondering what some of these same singers would be like in roles other than the ones I saw them in. And hence this podcast. You will hear performances by Stephen Gould, Johannes Martin Kränzle, Catherine Foster, and others.

One of the delights of the past two Bayreuth Festivals was listening to tenor Stephen Gould mesmerize audiences with his impressive performances of Tannhäuser. This summer he is making the crowds at the "Green Hill" go wild once again, this time with his volcanic interpretation of the title role in Siegfried. In this podcast you will hear him sing this role, alongside tenor Gerhard Siegel (Mime), in the Act I Forging Song, and in the final scene of Act III with soprano Linda Watson (Brünnhilde).
