In this week's episode, host Margaret Walls talks with Lynne Lewis, currently a professor of economics at Bates College and an incoming professor of agricultural and resource economics at Colorado State University, about brown bears in Katmai National Park in Alaska. Lewis discusses the fan base for the brown bear population in Katmai, which is connected to the Fat Bear Week tournament held every October; surveys that indicate the amount of money people would be willing to pay to protect the brown bears in Katmai; the relationship between an animal's perceived individuality and the value people place on the conservation of that animal or its local population; and potential problems associated with visitors overcrowding Katmai and other national parks in the United States. It was 1864, and Northern Plains Indians were not pleased with settlers migrating from east to west along the Oregon, Bozeman and Overland Trails. Thus began a series of attacks and robberies on unsuspecting emigrants winding their way along the Platte River. Shots rang out and arrows whizzed as miners, doctors, farmers, families, and war widows rallied their covered wagons together. As historian journalist Janelle Molony relates in her new book “Emigrant Tales of the Platte River Raids,” some of those involved had familiar names – Brown, Boone, Earp, Kelly, Larimer, Ringo, Rousseau and more. She joins Russell an Alan to share some of the eyewitness testimonies of nearly 70 survivors, presented in one accord for the first time in literary history. And western singer-songwriter Jim Jones shares his song “Rockin' Chair” from his new album “Storyteller – Tales from the West.”

A lot can change in just a couple short years….your dreams may be just around the corner! These changes, whether they are good or bad, can happen in a blink of an eye. It may seem like every day is the same, but when you look back, everything is different from how it used to be, and you are different from who you used to be. Change offers new opportunities and experiences. It keeps life exciting and ensures that bad situations don't last. It helps you move on, stay focused, and helps shape you. After all, progress is impossible without change. Today, I am flying solo to share my realization after reading a book called The Storyteller: Tales of Life and Music by Dave Grohl, where he shared behind-the-scene stories of his musical life as a singer, guitarist, songwriter, drummer, and record producer. In this episode, I will discuss why it matters to seek and embrace change. I will also reveal what motivated me to step down from my position as a CEO after building a company from zero to a nine-figure organization and what has changed since then. Topics include: Dave Grohl's book The Storyteller and the realization I got from it I look back at where I was three, six, nine, twelve, fifteen, eighteen, and even twenty-one years ago and how different each three-year period was from the next. Why I decided to quit my nine-figure company The inevitability of change How to thrive when dealing with change The importance of reflecting on your life and career And other topics… Connect with Darius: Website: https://therealdarius.com/ Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dariusmirshahzadeh/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/whoompdarius/ YouTube: https://therealdarius.com/youtube Book: The Core Value Equation https://www.amazon.com/Core-Value-Equation-Framework-Limitless/dp/1544506708 Learn more about your ad choices. Kathleen Vignos, VP of Software Engineering @ Capital One, shares how to overcome executive leadership gaps that prevent eng leaders from advancing to the next level in their career. Outside of strategic technology work, Kathleen is a distance runner and loves travel. She lives with her husband in San Francisco. They have 2 adult children and are working on plans to visit their sixth continent."I was hearing this message, 'You need to be more strategic.' I realized my definition of strategy in my head was not actually strategy and I needed to reframe strategy as being willing to completely blow everything up because there's a bigger, better thing you need to do and I think that if you are very organized and very goal oriented, you don't want to blow up your plan. You want to execute your plan. You're a great executor and that will get you to a certain level. So I think that's inflection point number one, at least it was for me and I think that's true for a lot of people. I see it over and over again.”- Kathleen Vignos SHOW NOTES:How the career portfolio concept strategically drives career growth (2:33)Surprising discoveries in Kathleen's transition to tech (5:07)Parallels between Kathleen's early work & current eng leadership (7:12)The impact of a career portfolio on acquiring skills in a nonlinear way (10:47)Kathleen's tips for someone reorienting their approach to career growth (15:18)Common gaps / blocks people encounter on their career growth journey (17:08)Understanding your audience & the reach of your influence (20:13)Navigating the shift between being a great executor to a great strategist (22:23)Key principles of influencing & facilitation (24:49)Strategies for option limiting as a facilitator (27:01)How to facilitate to achieve time efficiency & positive option exploration (30:01)Applying facilitation strategies during the candidate hiring process (32:39)Examples of “polite interruption” phrases to use (35:31)Approaches for dealing with conflict & reframing (36:49)Recommendations for negotiating & decision making (39:47)Rapid fire questions (44:13)LINKS AND RESOURCESGetting More: How to Negotiate to Achieve Your Goals in the Real World - Based on Professor Stuart Diamond's award-winning course at the Wharton Business School, Getting More concludes that finding and valuing the other party's emotions and perceptions creates far more value than the conventional wisdom of power and logic. At The New Yorker Festival, Dave Grohl talked with Kelefa Sanneh about Grohl's recent book, “The Storyteller: Tales of Life and Music.” Grohl, who was the drummer for Nirvana before becoming the front man of the Foo Fighters, recalled one of his earliest experiences of taking music seriously: harmonizing with his mom to Carly Simon on the car radio. He also talked about what it was like to collaborate with Kurt Cobain, who was known for his capricious genius, and about stepping out from behind the drums to lead his own band. “After Kurt died, I was, like, I'm not playing music anymore—it's too painful,” he remembered. “And then I eventually realized that if music saved my life, my entire life, this is what's going to save my life again.” This segment was originally aired November 26, 2021.

Last year, I started my podcast and welcomed my baby boy earth side." Candice is a mom, podcaster, social marketer and essentialist who loves to engage in interesting conversations with other influencers and entrepreneurs. Her favourite conversations are the ones that take courage to engage in. (Check out her podcast, Create the Ripple Podcast) She has learned the power of saying no, listening to your own heart and speaks openly about subtle abuse as it occurs in relationships - personally and professionally. She's become a voice for listening to your own truth and speaking it clearly, powerfully - at home, at work and in your life. She spends her time living - in a tiny home (250 sq ft), traveling, speaking and sharing candidly with others how to live life after betrayal, to trust themselves, to speak up for themselves and set powerful boundaries. After a narcissistic partner cheated on her with multiple women, left her (and the country!) With over 350 thousand dollars worth of bad debt, Candice was forced to rebuild her life, her credit and her trust in herself. Coming out of this, she encountered her own “Me Too” moment dealing with sexual coercion and harassment in her professional life; saying no resulted in her being the target of gossip that tarnished her reputation. Deeply affected by the gaslighting and the experiences, she adopted a minimalist lifestyle, leaned on her personal network and practiced radical personal forgiveness, acceptance and responsibility. The journey was not without its impact and Candice shares powerfully about dealing with anxiety, depression, shame and learning to let go. When grief rocked her world a little less than 2 years ago, Candice knew it was time to stop her life, hit the pause button and finally do the deep work to heal her heart, self and mindset. Emerging from this place, Candice has begun to embrace her fierce and receptive feminine nature. The journey to be and embrace all the parts of herself has led her to the place to start her wildly successful Create the Ripple Podcast; Trust the Niggle and Tell the Truth - where she features other amazing guests who are not afraid to do the hard work of personal development, listen to their own minds/heart and then speak up and out for those things that matter; to themselves and to make a difference in the world. Candice loves her essentialist lifestyle for the beauty and freedom it offers her. She can never resist the urge to take off her boots to walk barefoot into a clear mountain lake or stream. Raidieraksta "Piedzīvot lappuses" februāra grāmatu, Marjus Marcinkevičus "Akmentiņš", iegādājies šeit https://www.zvaigzne.lv/lv/gramatas/apraksts/202474-akmentins.htmlRaidieraksta "Piedzīvot lappuses" marta grāmatu iegādājies šeit https://www.janisroze.lv/lv/gramatas/dailliteratura/tulkota-dailliteratura/klasika-musdienu-literatura/meitina.htmlSeko raidierakstam Instagram https://www.instagram.com/piedzivot/Seko Zanei Instagram https://www.instagram.com/mom.who.reads.a.lot/Seko Sandrai Instagram https://www.instagram.com/pielasit_sirdi/Ziedo Ukrainas cilvēkiem https://www.ziedot.lv/ukrainas-cilvekiem-4203Sarunā pieminētie autori un grāmatas.*Marjus Marcinkevičus "Akmentiņš"*Jurga Vile, Lina Itagaki "Sibīrijas haiku"*Rūta Šepetis "Jūras sāļums", "Starp pelēkiem toņiem"*Anna Krasiļščika "Klau, aizbrauksim uz Unalašku!"*The Copenhagen Trilogy by Tove Ditlevsen*Zoī Beka "Lielpilsētas paradīze"*Ismails Kadare "Mirušo armijas ģenerālis"*Niklass Nats o Dāgs "1793"*Vinko Mēderndorfers "Sirds plaukstā"*Patriks Ness "Septiņas minūtes pēc pusnakts"*Iveta Troalika "Tūlīt paliks labāk"*Sigri Agnēte Hansena "Tu redzēji?"*The Storyteller: Tales of Life and Music by Dace Grohl*Filipa Perija "Jūs vēlēsieties, kaut šo grāmatu būtu izlasījuši jūsu vecāki"*Fredriks Bakmans "Nervozie ļautiņi"*Inga Ābele "Duna"*Karloss Ruiss Safons "Mirušo grāmatu kapsēta"*Kārlis Kazāks "Sākums mūs atrod pats"*Dēlija Ouensa "Kur vēži dzied"*Viktors Emīls Frankls "...tomēr teikt dzīvei, jā"*Mārtiņš Zvīdriņš "#Fudzi 161km"*Zane Nuts*Greguārs Delakūrs "Sieviete, kura nenovecoja"*Martins Pistoriuss "Neredzamais zēns"*Reičela Džoisa "Harolda Fraja neticamais svētceļojums"*Jana Tellere "Nekas"*Raimonds Platacis "Grāmata par nonullēšanos"*Kārena M. In today's episode I'm yet again reflecting on the past few days; from a dream visit with John Lennon, powerful reactions from a book I'm listening to, doves flying out of my head and seeing glimpses of the other side from someone who's between the veils. As always, my days fill me with wonder. Life is anything but boring. I love sharing these stories— thank you for taking an interest in listening to them! I referenced a few things on this episode, one being the new Beatles special on Disney+ called Get Back. I also mentioned Dave Grohl book The Storyteller: Tales of Life and Music I highly recommend checking them out! I also brought up the Shekinah, the feminine aspect of God and “Ascension Symptoms”. "Get Back"All you need is ... 8 hours to tell the story of the Beatles' recording sessions for the album "Let It Be" and their famous rooftop concert, the last time they played in public together. Steve says Peter Jackson's documentary on Disney + is a shade too long but it's thrilling to see the Beatles create songs that are now part of our pop DNA. Dad and daughter also discuss:Streaming"The Wheel of Time," Amazon Prime. Jeff Bezos tries to find the next "Game of Thrones" fantasy epic in Robert Jordan's much-loved series of books."tick ... tick ... BOOM!," Netflix. Lin-Manuel Miranda directed this a musical biopic about playwright Jonathan Larson, who would create "Rent." Andrew Garfield stars."The Harder They Fall," Netflix. All the principal characters are black in this stylish, violent revisionist Western with a fantastic cast."Hawkeye," Disney +. The archer (Jeremy Renner) from the Avengers reluctantly gets a young partner (Hailee Steinfeld) in this new miniseries.Books"The Song of Achilles," Madeline Miller."The Storyteller: Tales of Life and Music," Dave Grohl."The Book of Magic," Alice Hoffman.Popahallics #60 PlaylistWhy "let it be" when you can have a playlist chock full of musical greatness! Our latest features the Beatles, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, and numbers from the "tick ... tick ... BOOM!" soundtrack. Listen.

At The New Yorker Festival, Dave Grohl talked with Kelefa Sanneh about Grohl's new book, “The Storyteller: Tales of Life and Music.” Grohl, who was the drummer for Nirvana and then the frontman of the Foo Fighters, recalls his earliest experiences of taking music seriously—harmonizing with his mom to Carly Simon on the car radio. Grohl also talks about what it was like to collaborate with Kurt Cobain, who was known for his capricious genius, and about stepping out from behind the drums to lead his own band. “After Kurt died, I was, like, I'm not playing music anymore—it's painful,” he remembers. “And then I eventually realized that if music saved my life, my entire life, this is what's going to save my life again.”

Today we talk about the subject that is often overlooked. Markup and Margin. Knowing your numbers. This is about as critical a business topic as you can think. The restoration industry is plagued by this idea that restoration companies are just being greedy when they bill for O&P (Overhead and Profit). That is usually driven by the opposing party, the carrier. We are here to tell you that it is absolutely essential for the health and wellbeing of your company. You MUST cover your O&P if you expect to build a business that you can accomplish your goals with. We highlight a book called Markup and Profit (A Contractors Guide) by Micheal Stone. Get the book here. It will change the way you look at your business! We also chat about some other books that are front of mind for us this week. Toby talks about The Power of Who by Bob Beaudine. Klarks love for music drove him to get the book by the infamous David Grohl titled The Storyteller - Tales of Life and Music. Both have takeaways that you can implement TODAY. Check them out!
