In between seasons, Kirk re-ran a bunch of old episodes and prefaced each one with a new music recommendation. Saffron, born Samantha Marie Sprackling on June 3, 1968, in Lagos, Nigeria, is a British singer and actress best known as the lead vocalist of the band Republica. Raised in the UK, she initially pursued a career in musical theatre before transitioning to the music industry. Saffron first gained attention in the late 1980s and early 1990s as a backing vocalist and dancer for the dance group N-Joi and as a member of the band The Shamen. However, her breakthrough came in 1994 when she joined Republica, a band that blended alternative rock with electronic dance music. The group achieved significant success with their self-titled debut album in 1996, particularly with the hit singles "Ready to Go" and "Drop Dead Gorgeous," which became iconic tracks of the 90s. Saffron's distinctive voice and vibrant stage persona were key to the band's appeal, making her a recognizable figure in the Britpop and electronic rock scenes of the time. After Republica disbanded in the early 2000s, Saffron pursued various solo projects and collaborations, and the band eventually reformed in 2008, continuing to perform and release new music. To watch on YouTube Singer Saffron, From Lagos to London Stage to N-Joi to Republica & Drop D-ad Gorgeous Chart successhttps://youtu.be/QuXYaHBlR1A Hosted on Acast. Pro tip: please watch the short video version of this post that I link to www.GuitarSuccess4U.com/10AlternateTuningMyths. It will give you a much clearer grasp of what I'm sharing here.Abbreviated transcript and table included below…Have you always wanted to play in alternate tunings, but felt a little intimidated by the process? Not anymore.Let's dispel 10 myths together and find some hidden treasures when it comes to alternate tunings. The 6 machine heads on our guitars are like a 6-digit combination lock, and the alternate tunings we can access with them can be incredibly enjoyable. Here are 10 myths I'm going to dispel about alternate tunings. You ready?Myth #1 – “Alternate tunings are too difficult to get into.”By definition, an alternate tuning is any tuning that's different from standard tuning, so even Drop-D can fall into this category. This is the best place to start. All you do is start with a standard-tuned guitar and then tune one string down – your 6th string, until the 12th fret harmonic matches the open 4th string D (watch the video to see how.)Myth #2 – “Alternate tunings can be achieved with a partial capo.” If were to take a standard tuned guitar and place a partial capo on strings 5, 4, and 3 on the second fret, and play those notes open, they would sound an Esus4.If I tune another guitar to DADGAD and place the capo on the second fret, I'll have access to the same open notes that sound an Esus4. And although some of the chords might sound similar on both guitars (see the video), that's where the similarity between the partial capo and the alternate tuning end.Look at this closed voicing A Major scale on a standard-tuned guitar with a partial capo, and contrast it to a DADGAD capo 2 guitar.Myth #3 – “You can figure out the tuning of a guitar from an audio recording.” Sometimes. Not always. I wrote a song in DADGAD and recorded it on an album with my capo on the 3rd fret. Later, a friend liked the song so much that he taught it to himself from the recording, and played it in standard tuning, but with a lot more fretted notes. Myth #4 – “The tuning dictates the key.” Not necessarily. I actually learned a beautiful fingerstyle song by Pierre Bensusan in DADGAD while studying with him in France called “L'Alchimiste,” and that song was in DADGAD but in the keys of C and F Major…without a capo. Pretty wild.Myth #5 – “Alternate tunings require a dedicated guitar.” I think it depend on how quickly you can re-tune. I caught Michael Hedges in concert a couple times and he had two 6-string guitars for the whole show – one he played onstage, while his technician re-tuned the other one offstage. He must have played in upwards of two dozen tunings with just those two guitars. At my concerts and when I lead worship, I use at most, three guitars. I try to keep my guitars in neighboring tunings as well, and to plan my sets accordingly.Myth #6 – “Each tuning takes a long time to learn to play in.” Actually, once you've re-tuned, you can be creating great music in minutes. There's something sweet about exploring a new tuning for the first time, and finding chord voicings that are just not possible in standard tuning or even partial capo positions.Myth #7 – “Once you re-tune, you have to re-learn the instrument.” As I mentioned, you don't have to re-learn everything in a new tuning. Some strings, if they remain in their original pitches, can allow for some of the same figures we know, like three-string chord voicings or melodic fragments. Some tunings are nice for specific textures, drones, or certain keys. But a new tuning doesn't necessitate re-learning the entire guitar from square one. Myth #8 – “Alternate tunings require special string gauges.” If we keep the same strings proprietary to their standard locations on the guitar, I recommend medium gauge – 13 to 56, from high to low, because a set of these strings splits the difference between the heavy gauge strings and light gauge strings.Myth #9 – “Your tunings drastically affect your collaborators' choices.”As long as you're in concert pitch and playing chords or melodies, this really doesn't affect your collaborators in a major way.You might have a little fun mystifying your bass player who thinks they know which notes you're playing, especially on your low strings, but no, tunings don't affect other musicians, at least not logistically. They may actually inspire your collaborators artistically, which could be really cool. Lastly…Myth #10 – “There are only a limited number of alternate tunings out there.” Think about my analogy of a combination lock for a moment. There are lots of possibilities, especially if there are six digits on your lock. If we were to compute each string as having a combined range of an octave (in other words, each string could theoretically be tuned down a Perfect 5th and up a Major 3rd), how many alternate tuning possibilities could there be on a 6-string guitar? Answer: 2,985,984 tunings! A six-string acoustic guitar in good shape is primed and ready for exploring alternate tunings, so I encourage you to step out and take the risk. Who knows? You might write an arrangement or a brand-new song in a new tuning…today. Maybe you'll find a way to arrange a worship song you love, in an alternate tuning, perhaps combined with a capo across all 6 strings for the key where it works best for your voice, your band, or both. I hope you do.As we wrap up, without going too deep into a discussion about gear, I will say that there are automated tuners, tuning levers and pegs that can be added to a guitar to customize the precision and speed with which someone can re-tune their guitar. Guitarist Adrian Legg is a prime example of someone who has leveraged these kinds of tools. But a six-string acoustic guitar in good shape is primed and ready for exploring alternate tunings, so I encourage you to step out and take the risk. Who knows? You might write an arrangement or a brand new song in a new tuning…today. Maybe you'll find a way to arrange a worship song you love, in an alternate tuning, perhaps combined with a capo across all 6 strings for the key where it works best for your song, your band, or both. Is this one of the best or worst method books for acoustic fingerstyle guitar? You can learn to play music by simultaneously using a variety of resources including teachers, online resources, and books. David Hamburger's The Acoustic Guitar Fingerstyle Method is a method book for learning to play solo fingerstyle (or “fingerpicking”) guitar in the American roots styles (folk, blues, ragtime, early jazz, marches). The book becomes progressively more difficult – the early sections of the book are appropriate for beginner fingerstyle players who have some experience with open chords and the later sections of the book are more suitable for intermediate players. Advanced players may still find some useful information, inspiration, or fun repertoire tunes. This is a well-thought-out book with a great progression of information and fun arrangements of tunes. The book focuses on alternating bass (Travis picking) arrangements and steady bass arrangements (monotonic bass, walking bass, etc.). There are also brief chapters on Drop D and open D tuning. The material flows in a sensible progression from chapter to chapter as you build skills and knowledge. Each chapter includes text and playing examples that directly prepare you for a 1-2 page tune that showcases the techniques or concepts being taught. The arrangements of the tunes are really nice (they sound good and are playable), although don't usually include any fingering (there is picking hand fingering notated in the examples, but not the full tunes). The tunes are stylistically similar to those found in Stefan Grossman's “Complete Country Blues Guitar Book” and Mel Bay's “Complete Chet Atkins Guitar Method” although with a very different teaching approach. The book covers a lot of ground in only 74 pages – from beginning Travis Picking to steady bass blues to harmonized walking bass lines to alternate tunings, etc. While the examples and tunes are of high quality, there aren't that many examples for each topic, so you won't get that deep of an understanding of how to apply some concepts to different situations. One example of this is playing walking bass lines under your melody- you'll play a few tunes that include this, but you won't really learn how to build your own walking bass lines so that you can apply them to your own arrangements or compositions. However, by the end of the book, you will have a firm grasp of the general approaches of playing using an alternating bass (Travis Picking) or a steady bass. There is not a lot of music theory in the book. This may appeal to some readers. However, it adds to the issue that you may not be able to apply a concept like walking bass lines to other situations. The text is descriptive and helpful. However, I don't like how the publisher places the text as a continuous block at the top of the page with the examples clumped together at the bottom of the page. Harder for my eyes to jump back and forth. The author includes great listening recommendations that are relevant to the tunes and topics at hand. The included audio (2 CDs) provides all examples and tunes played at full speed and slowed down. The guitar playing is clean and the recording quality is high. All playing examples are provided in standard notation (treble clef) and tablature. You could use either a steel string acoustic or nylon string classical guitar to work through this book. You shouldn't need to fret any bass notes using your thumb over the top. Published by String Letter Publishing (publisher of Acoustic Guitar Magazine) © 2007. Distributed by Hal Leonard. You can learn to play music using a variety of resources including teachers, online resources, and books. Michael Wood's “The Gigging Guitarist: Traditional Celtic and Appalachian Tunes for Fingerstyle Guitar” provides sonorous and playable solo fingerstyle repertoire for late beginner to advanced guitar players. As implied by the title of the book, you could actually take the book to a coffee shop/restaurant/wedding ceremony gig and play it from cover to cover. The tunes are not hard for an experienced player, but the arrangements sound really good! If you are interested in Celtic tunes like Turlough O'Carolan's “Si Beag Si Mhor,” Irish or Appalachian jigs or fiddle tunes, or traditional Appalachian ballads, then this book provides a nice selection of enjoyable material. Michael Wood's arrangements utilize neither alternating bass / Travis Picking patterns nor any percussive techniques. Instead, the arrangements utilize arpeggiation to fill the spaces between the melody notes. The tunes have a flowing style that is easy on the hands and the ears. Also, the tunes are all in standard tuning. There are a few where I personally like modifying to Drop D, but it isn't necessary to do so. Excellent repertoire in the above-mentioned styles. You won't find any of these tunes on mainstream radio in the USA. The tunes can all be played without any page turns – great for gigs. The arrangements cause low hand fatigue – great for gigs. No full barre chords. No alternate tunings – great for gigs. You can always experiment with altering the tuning of a song if you feel so inclined. Optional intros make the tunes sound more polished. Performance notes at the beginning of the book provide a little bit of background for each tune. Standard Notation and Tablature. Almost no picking or fretting hand fingering is notated. No audio access. As mentioned, this is a repertoire book full of songs. This is NOT a method book that teaches you step-by-step how to play solo fingerstyle guitar. If you are taking lessons or independently learning how to play, this book would be a nice supplement to a method book. If you like these tunes then you're in luck because the author has released several more books with additional repertoire! Acoustic steel string or classical guitar – no thumb over the top. You can learn to play music using a variety of resources including teachers, online resources, and books. Hal Leonard's "Fingerstyle Guitar" is a solid method book aimed at beginner, intermediate, and advanced guitar players who want to learn to play solo fingerstyle guitar arrangements complete with melody, bass lines, and inner harmony. It also has a chapter focused on accompaniment styles for those players looking to play fingerstyle guitar and sing (or accompany another melody instrument. This book ranges in difficulty from easy to hard, often within each chapter. 1) Good information about choosing an acoustic guitar and other gear. 2) Good fingerstyle arpeggiation and alternating bass patterns followed by musical application of those patterns. Unfortunately, the musical applications are often disconnected from each other (they don't build on each other and there isn't much explanation). 3) Introduces all the elements of playing fingerstyle guitar. Melody, bass, inner harmony, arpeggiation, alternating bass, special techniques, introduction to alternate tunings. 4) Probably the best popular repertoire of any method book on the market. Hal Leonard presents popular tunes from the Beatles, Bob Dylan, James Taylor, etc. You could buy the book just for the repertoire. 5) Wonderful chapter on arranging for fingerstyle guitar. 6) Audio Access included. Personally, I don't like how the book teaches alternate tunings. It basically gives you a bunch of chord charts and a few examples for Open G tuning. They do a slightly better job of discussing Drop D tuning. It would have been nice if they had arranged “Silent Night” (the focus of Chapter 4) in each of these tunings so that you got a sense of why you might want to use them. Obviously, each alternate tuning causes the melody to lay out differently on the fretboard, and each alt tuning gives you different access to bass notes, inner harmony, harmonics, etc. Although the book does introduce percussive string slaps, for the most part it does not get into the modern percussive techniques used by modern players like Michael Hedges, Don Ross, Andy McKee, Mike Dawes, etc. No guitar body percussion or tapping. Hal Leonard's “Fingerstyle Guitar” covers a lot of ground and you could return to it for years. You could buy it just for the great repertoire. However, as a method book, I'd first recommend Alfred's “Beginning Fingerstyle Guitar Method, and if you are into the alternate bass style then maybe Mel Bay's “Chet Atkins Guitar Method.” Acoustic steel string or classical nylon string guitar. Drop D tuning can open up an entire new sonic soundscape, but do you know how best to practice your shapes and scales in this alternate tuning? On today's episode of Acoustic Tuesday, you're going to get a lesson behind the acoustic guitar lick of the week. Every Tuesday, I offer you a quick lesson on learning an awesome lick. But this week, you'll get to see the theory, rationale, and benefits behind learning the lick this week. Specifically, this lick focuses on drop D tuning for the acoustic guitar. Drop D tuning is when you turn your low E string to a low D. This gives you awesome bass sounds and can infuse your playing with bluesy mojo sounds. If you aren't a fan of the blues (to which I say, check yourself!), drop D tuning is used in a variety of different genres. From American Primitive to modern fingerstyle, you're sure to find a great way to apply drop D tuning to your playing. Besides covering drop D tuning, you'll also hear from TAC Family member Shannon and how building a solid guitar routine helped her in a difficult point in her life. Perhaps her story could inspire you, no? Hello Confident Soul! Think of yourself like a guitar. Guitars regularly need tuning if you want them to produce a harmonious sound. If you are an avid guitar player, then you know it's totally normal and natural for a guitar to drift out of tune with or without use. In fact you can even intentionally change the tuning of the strings to reach other depths of sound, because guitars are flexible that way, right? Like drop D for example. There are so many beautiful depths of sound available. Despite the fact that Drop D is beautiful, it's important not to stay stuck in drop D, nor to stay stuck out of tune. Because if you do, you won't totally be in harmony with the other strings. You, and more specifically your emotional wellness, are not so different from a guitar. You have a beautiful range and depth of emotion to express, and regularly need tuning to stay in harmony. In this episode we are going to dive deep into the idea of what it truly means to “vibe high” by exploring the Human Design G centre & Emotional Solar Plexus, the Law of Vibration & Attraction, the vagus nerve, and debunking myths about constantly staying “high vibe.” Questions answered in this episode: Where does Vibe high come from and what does it mean? Seek and Enjoy!

For the sixth annual NZ Music special, we hand over the keys to national treasure Roger Perry. Roger has been fighting the good fight for nearly 40 years. He started DJing in 1984 at the Venue, an all ages club run by Russ Le Roq (Russell Crowe). From there, he went on to run Asylum, where New Zealand audiences were first introduced to house music. He hosted NZ's first dance music radio show, Asylum FM on bFM. He has also made some masterful music as Reactor Music, Kingsland Housing Project, and Toolbox. His one-take mix for us tonight is a canvassing of house music in Aotearoa, from peerless classics to killer cuts from the new school. Don't miss out. From Roger: "This is a one take mix from the beginning to the end. No edits. I used the Pioneer DDJ – SZ Pioneer DJ Controller . Recorded direct to Serato. Sorry to the purists.. very little here ever had the opportunity to be pressed on wax. love from roger" Pic: Roger at the Siren in 1988.
Episode 146 - Tuned To Drop D(ead) As musicians ourselves, we know what it is like to strive for perfection. We've done the all-nighters with six sweaty dudes locked in a room, plugging away at the same song over and over until our fingers feel like they are going to fall off. Beer cans stacked to the ceiling and Taco Bell wrappers littering the floor. Ok, maybe we weren't striving for perfection so much as we were getting drunk and eating junk food while playing music, but we still know what it is to want that ultimate payoff as a band. There were times when we wanted it so much, we even thought we would go so far as to sell our souls to the devil. This week we grabbed some Liquid Vinyl Russian Imperial Stout from Arbor Brewing Company and discussed a couple flicks that find musicians willing to do whatever it takes to make it. Cheers! Cosa significa esattamenete "drop D"? A cosa serve? Cosa sono le accordature aperte? Si usano sul basso? Se anche tu ti fai spesso queste domande, probabilmente hai bisogno di guardarti questo video. E hai anche bisogno di una vacanza, volendo vedere. Ma per quello io posso farci poco. BUONA VISIONE!
Check out Tether y'all. Wrote this with the Spider Capo on the 6th fret, in Drop D. Layered over some drums, bass, and organ. I like the way it came out! Though the drums could've been made a little better. Great seed for a song! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/danbarracuda/support

Part One of our Interview with Laurence Juber of Wings. This week starts with some oddball querstions , and meanders through LJ's thoughts on John and Paul's songwriting, and the performance aspects of each of the four. This is then followed by a discussion of "Drop D", "DADGAD", and why he frequently chooses to play in alternate tunings. The show then ends with an excerpt from a tutorial where he demonstrates his arranging skills, letting us into his head with "Martha My Dear" on guitar.
I went to two concerts this weekend and underneath all the education and information, podcasters are entertainers. If you're not entertaining your audience, you're losing them. Dictionary.com defines entertain as, "to hold the attention of pleasantly or agreeably; divert; amuse." We need to hold people's attention. The concerts I saw this weekend were Jonny Lang and King's X. Two Concerts by musicians with track records going all the way back to 1980 (King's X) and 1995 (Lang). Jonny Lang released his major label debut when he was 15 years old. Both bands had music in the rotation on MTV (for those that remember MTV) So what does this have to do with Podcasting? Well as both of these bands are now "Indie" we can learn from them. Have a Crappy Opening Act In both instances, the promoters of these shows picked HORRENDOUS opening acts. While the bands have little if nothing at all to do with this, it does make them sound better. Know what you're going to say Both of these bands have what are called set lists. This lists the songs in the order. It's only game plan and can be changed, but when they hit the stage they have a pretty idea of what is going to happen in the next 60-90 minutes. As a podcaster you should have a pretty good idea of where you are going when you press record. I know this seems common sense, but I often here shows start with what should be pregame chatter, "Did you want to talk about _____?" This should've been decided before the microphone was turned on. It's not like the guys in King's X have a big "LADIES AND GENTLEMEN KING'S X" and then Doug and Ty look at each other and ask, "Should we do Groove Machine?" I recently read a book about Van Halen, and bands of this caliber practice the same set for months to make sure everything is smooth. For the Love of God put the good stuff first There is a reason the news often starts with the phrase "Our top story tonight." Both bands came out with great up-tempo songs to get the crowd engaged. 3. Be Original Jonny Lang sounded like he was 15 going on 48 when he came out of the gate. He has a voice that is very distinct, and you know its him. Kings X has a very distinct sound. Did they do something way outside the box? Yes and No. They tune their guitars lower than what is considered standard, and they use a slightly different tuning (for the musicians they tune to C instead of E, and they use Drop D (not C) tuning). So while a little outside the box, all they did was twist a few knobs. These small twists (combined with awesome musicianship) makes them very identifiable. 4. Listen to Your Audience During one song Jonny was playing and singing with his guitar. This is called "Scat singing" and it was pretty cool (and I hate scat singing). The crowd really came alive. Sure enough later in the evening he brought it back. All night King's X fans were shouting requests (they have quite a few albums). One song is called, "King" and one person kept screaming, "Are you going to play King?" Well, they weren't because I was in the front row leaning on the stage and could read their set list (and I took after the convert). Before their first encore, they swapped added it. 5. You Can't Make Everyone Happy One dufas at the Kings X show wrote a note with a song request and was very persistent. Eventually, the lead singer stated they had a set list, and they are prepared to play and some they are not. 6. Have a Cool Logo if You Want to Sell Merchandise Jonny Lang's t-shirt was boring. They pictured his latest album cover which has his picture on it. With the music business in a mess, musicians make a fair amount of money from merchandise sales. For those who want to keepsake from the concert, the traditional "Album cover" t-shirt will do. King's X has a cool logo, with the phrase "First Church of Rock and Roll" with the saying "May the Groove be With you" You want to wear this shirt BECAUSE IT'S A COOL SHIRT. The other thing about having a cool logo shirt, is you can sell it no matter what tour you're on. This also means knowing your audience, so if your audience is a bunch if middle aged dudes, you better keep the extra large in stock. 7. Do No Underestimate the Power Of You, and the Value of Direct Access With Jonny Lang you can purchase a VIP package with gives you access to the soundcheck, selfie, posters, guitar picks, commemorative laminate, etc for $100. Most of this has very little to do with Jonny. 8. Don't Lose Your Cool, or Panic During the first few songs, the lead singer was having an issue with a microphone stand. Eventually, he threw it to the ground. Was he upset? I don't think so. I think he was trying to get the attention of the sound crew. Some "Rock stars" might've walked off the stage. Doug kept his cool. King's X Did Something Brilliant At Disney at end of the every ride you exit through the gift shop. At the end of their show, the lead singer from King's X explained how they were going to towel off, and head over to the merchandise table where you can get pictures, selfies, merchandise, etc. In other words, exit through the gift shop. The AMAZING thing is you didn't have to purchase anything to meet the band. The lead singer explained this as he was leaving the stage, "After all, it's all about you.' I was at the very end of the line. I was worried that they would cut the line, but I was told by one of their staff, "No, they stay till everyone has been served." WOW. What Was The Result? Most of the people there got a lot of time to look at the merchandise. To see other buying the merchandise. This was the law of reciprocity in action. They were doing something nice for you (free selfies) in hopes that you would do something nice for them (I bought a $25 t-shirt). Doug did a quick soundbyte for the show. They were awesome. Jonny Lang put on a great show. I love his voice, and can't wait for the new album. I do want to comment on something I noticed. I talked to people at the Jonny Lang show and for the most part people were from the Akron/Canton/Cleveland Area (within an hour of the location). There were a lot of fans of the venue (the Kent Stage), and alot of fans of Jonny. Within the first five minutes of standing in line at the Kings X show, I met people who came from New York (7 hours away), Indiana (4 hours away), Columbus (4 hours away). People who had seen them 10, 12, 13 times. With any prodding of the band, the King's X fans bellowed out the song with the singer. This often lead him to back away from the microphone. I was in the front row, I had probably 400 people behind me. To hear a room of people drowning out the amplifiers a few feet from me was a very cool thing. It obviously touched the singer as he was amazed at the enthusiasm of the crowd. So is this enhanced engagement with their audience the result of their "Free" Meet and Greets?" I don't have any facts to prove this, but if I was a betting man, I would guess that to be true. After quite awhile without a RoughMix post. I decided to add this. I have been recording music, but actually posting a podcast takes some time, and life takes time too! This episode runs long, and is experimental. The audio records uninterrupted and has background noise as recorded from my Palm Tungsten. I am making up everything on the fly, but it is based on some experiments I did in earlier recording where I played with some elements.
