This week on Magnolia Street, the Stinas dive into the iconic symbol of witch hats. They explore the origins of this pointy headwear, tracing its history and evolution through time. From ancient folklore to modern interpretations, the Stinas unravel the mystery behind the shape, style, and symbolism of witch hats. We'll then discuss why author Alice Hoffman decided to leave the pointy witch hat stereotype out of her book series, and comb through the movie to explore the many "practical" hats the Aunts seem to don in the garden or around Maria's Island. And of course, we're chatting out those iconic pointy black hats in the film's finale! Whether in the world of magic or the everyday muggle world, the Stinas discuss what these hats represent today and how they've become a staple of witchy culture. "Do you always trust your first initial feeling?" On today's episode, The Stinas explore the psychic spiritual phenomenon known as the Clairs: Clairvoyance, Clairsentience, Clairaudience, Claircognizance, just to name a few. We'll analyze all of these fascinating abilities and learn how The Owens family use their own intuitive gifts to navigate the mundane real world in the Practical Magic Film. Justina and Kristina both share personal experiences of their own psychic gifts before welcoming Magnolia Street's resident research assistant & certified Hypnotherapist and expert in Spiritual Attachments & Release, Christa Rimmer. Christa shares with us her personal experiences in utilizing The Clairs to work with clients and their spiritual attachments. She also inspires and encourages newbie witches to work their intuitive muscles to strengthen their own psychic abilities... All this, plus an odd coincidental Linda Bennett connection, and MORE! Today's guest really brings back some memories. Please welcome Sheila Shukla from Magnolia Street String Band. Sheila and I go way back. Like WAAAAAY back, all the way to elementary school. There's a little bit of catching up in this episode, sprinkled throughout Sheila's story. She talks about how she used to force her sister, Rita, to help her figure out harmonies she was hearing before they could go out and play. And eventually, growing up in 80's and 90's New Jersey, she got into metal and alternative music pretty heavily. But at one point, she became mesmerized by bluegrass. She tells exactly what happened and when it happened. She became so obsessed with the sound in college and had a great support system to help her learn guitar and figure out how to play what she was hearing in her head. But life snuck in and put some of the musical ambitions on hold for a bit. But music has a tendency to make its way to the forefront. And so it did with Sheila. She met some like-minded folks and formed Magnolia Street String Band in 2013. The band has a very impressive pedigree and a beautiful classic bluegrass sound. After some false starts, they released their debut in 2019 and then had to wait with the rest of the world for things to open up post-COVID to play again. Sheila and the band have a new album coming out and it's unique in the bluegrass world. It's called By The Light Of The Moon and it's basically a children's album that doesn't sound childish. It's written for kids, keeping in mind that parents have to listen to it at the same time. So why not make it enjoyable for both? Look for it starting on National Children's Music Day, October 4th. "Get the bird..." This week we're talking about DOVES! Did you know that before Doves were synonymous with peace, they were sacred to Aphrodite and the ways of amore? In today's episode, The Stinas explore the mysterious portraits adorning the walls throughout the Owens residence on Magnolia Street. They discuss Maria's painting as mentioned in the books and take note of a possible plot hole in the portrait's traveling capabilities! They explore more Titanic connections that lead them to believe that Rose was in fact a long lost Owens ancestor. No episode is complete without a deep dive into the movie scenes - The Stinas explore each portrait peppered throughout the film and the artists who painted them. However, most of the paintings in the film remain a mystery and many questions still beg to be answered - What are they called? Who painted them? What are their origins? And WHY were they chosen for the film? Do they hold greater significance to the Owens storyline, than meets the eye? And that's not all! The Stinas explore Princess Sybille of Cleves, the subject of the film's most noteworthy paintings, as well as her entire family of royals during the rule of Henry VIII- not to mention one of history's juiciest catfishing schemes! "In this house, we have chocolate cake for breakfast...." CALLING ALL CHOCO-HOLICS! In this episode The Stinas deep dive into this topic with forks and all! Justina brings Kristina back a chocolaty treat from the islands, very reminiscent of The Owen's signature rum cake! Then they make their way through all of the appearances of chocolate in the movie, and mentions in all 4 books. The Stinas discover the exact origins of Aunt Isabelle's rum cake, which date all the way back to Maria's story circa 1600s! Also, what was in that chocolate cake that Jet was using to "sweeten up" the Reverend? Could that explain his sudden change of personality throughout Book of Magic? Enjoy a Chocolate "Tipsy" Rum Cake recipe from the kitchen of Alice Hoffman herself, plus excerpts from The Faerie Magazine Practical Magic 2017 Issue No. 40! And no visit to Magnolia Street is complete without some magick & lore! We'll explore the magickal correspondences of all different kinds of chocolate, the healing properties and benefits of dark chocolate, the role of witches cakes in 1600s Salem (and no, these are not chocolate but something way more vile!), and the cultural significance of cacao and cocoa from ancient civilizations such as the Inca & Maya people, including sacred cacao ritual. Pop culture also makes its way into today's discussion with the 2000s film Chocolat (starring Juliette Binoche, Judi Dench & Johnny Depp) which explores concepts of fearing the unknown, and uses chocolate as a central theme to teach us about the importance of change! "The nudity is entirely optional, as you well remember!" Welcome to another episode of Magnolia Street, where we embark on an exploration of the fascinating practice of skyclad ritual nudity in Wicca and modern Paganism. In this episode, we delve into the origins of this ritualistic tradition and its significance within these spiritual paths. We begin with a little AI fun and speculate on the Aunts' Solstice Celebration as the Stinas wonder what Sally & Gilly's experience would have been like "dancing naked under the full moon"! This very small line of movie dialogue sends the Stinas full speed ahead down another rabbit hole, where they examine the meaning of nakedness (and NEKKIDness) in both Wicca and the Bible, uncovering the contrasting perspectives and shedding light on the historical and cultural factors that have shaped our understanding of nudity. We then trace the history of nudity in Paganism, Wicca, and Witchcraft, unraveling its roots and evolution throughout time. Join us as we explore the role of nudity in witchcraft and magickal practice, delving into its symbolism, empowerment, and transformative potential. Additionally, we delve into the significance of skyclad working in modern Paganism and its benefits for practitioners. Lastly, we take a comparative approach, exploring the history and significance of ritual nudity in various belief systems, including Christianity, Jainism, Witchcraft, and Paganism, highlighting their unique perspectives and practices. Tune in to this thought-provoking episode as we navigate the rich tapestry of skyclad ritual nudity and its diverse cultural and spiritual contexts. At first the May 22rd, 1918 double murder of Catherine and Joseph Maggio on Magnolia Street in New Orleans seemed to be a family matter. Joseph's brother Andrew was the one to discover the bloody crime scene and he was soon arrested under suspicion of murder. But when police failed to find a motive or evidence linking Andrew to the crime, they were forced to let him go. Little did they know that these were the first of a series of brutal attacks that would plague the city of New Orleans for the next 18 months.Sources:The Terrifying Axeman of New Orleans from BuzzFeed UnsolvedThe Axeman of New Orleans: The Killer Who Loved Jazz from BiographicsThe Axeman of New Orleans Preyed on Italian Immigrants from Smithsonian MagazineThe Axeman of New Orleans from Legends of America The Axeman of New Orleans from The Ministry of HistoryLouisiana and the 1918-1919 Pandemic from Influenza Encyclopedia Current Murder Rates in New Orleans:Why New Orleans Has the Highest Murder Rate in America from the Wall Street JournalNew Orleans Now the Nation's Murder Capital from NBC NewsGreat Tours to Check Out When You Visit New Orleans: French Quarter Hauntings and History from Spectral City ToursGarden District Secrets and Scandals from Spectral City ToursThe Killers and Thrillers Tour from Ghost City ToursManchac Magic Kayak Swamp Tours from Wild Louisiana ToursSee ya next Wednesday! Which would you choose, Courage or Caution for your tea? Magnolia Street resides at the intersection of science, history, magic, and folklore. In today's episode, we're going to dive into the world of tea and Tasseomancy, the art of reading tea leaves. This was our Patreon Pick and the Stinas underestimated the size of the rabbit hole they were about to venture down! Tea has a long and fascinating history, dating back thousands of years to ancient China. We'll explore the science behind tea's health benefits and delve into this beloved beverage's cultural significance. But tea is not just a drink – it's also a powerful tool for divination. Tasseomancy, or the art of reading tea leaves, has been practiced for centuries in many cultures around the world. We also have some anecdotes from Rev. Judith Laxer, a modern-day mystic, keynote speaker, teacher of the magickal arts and mysteries, and author of "Along the Wheel of Time: Sacred Stories for Nature Lovers". Judith takes us step by step through the mystical process of Tasseomancy and lends us her own personal key of symbols she uses when interpreting tea leaves for herself and others. Finally, Justina and Kristina will be brewing up a cuppa, and try their hand at reading tea leaves for each other while chatting about some of their favorite Tea Leaf Reading movie scenes in pop culture! What do YOU see? A Giraffe? or a Black Spectral DOG!?!? Pour yourself a cup and try some Tasseomancy right along with us! Chef Leilani Baugh's passion for food began as a small child. Raised by her two grandmothers, she learned at an early age that food and hospitality were the way to people's hearts. With one grandmother a Chinese immigrant and the other an African American Southern housekeeper, she embraced both worlds by ultimately fusing the two. Taking recipes from both grandmothers, she found herself mixing her favorites into delightful dishes for her family and friends. In 2021, in the midst of the pandemic, Chef Leilani made the bold decision to open Magnolia Street Wine Lounge & Kitchen, named after the street she grew up on in Oakland, California. 401. Part 2 of our interview with Timothy Bartel about Evangeline. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's Evangeline was a bestseller in nineteenth-century America, inspiring generations of readers with a heroine who overcomes colonial violence and exile in her romantic and spiritual quest across America. Long ignored by modernist scholars, Evangeline is finally getting the critical attention it deserves. Drawing on original research in Longfellow's scholarly manuscripts, Bartel explores the theological sources and spiritual world of Evangeline, arguing that Longfellow was inspired by the church fathers to craft Evangeline into a heroine who uniquely exemplifies, in her epic quest, the ancient Christian doctrines of deification and divine light. Bartel's Glimpses of Her Father's Glory returns Evangeline to its rightful place as a major poem of American literature, one that takes as its theme nothing less than the ultimate purpose of human existence. Dr. Bartel holds a PhD in Divinity from the University of St. Andrews and a Master of Fine Arts in Poetry from Seattle Pacific University. He is one of the founding faculty members of The College at The Saint Constantine School, helping shape the writing and literature curriculum. This week in Louisiana history. January 23, 1680. Today we look at the possibility of angels watching over us, read from The Deep, Down, Dirty South about home, men, Jesus, and telling the future. And include a reading from The Messenger of Magnolia Street where the Recording Angel reports what the town of Shibboleth is like from a hawks eye vision.
What does it mean to be 'home'? And what do we long for when we are homesick? For some its the saltwater. For others the mountains. A place we have known and loved all our lives. For others it is the people that make it feel like home. This week we explore the word home and what it means to different people and how we find our true homes the same way we might discover our true north. A reading from The Messenger of Magnolia Street and West With the Night by Beryl Markham and references about Rick Bragg's Ava's Man and Kathleen Norris's The Cloister Walk.
Housing is not a human right in the United States. But more people are saying it should be. That growing movement has roots here in the Bay Area, where it's been nearly a year since the mothers behind Moms 4 Housing first occupied a house on Magnolia Street in West Oakland. Earlier this month, the moms announced that the home would soon be used for transitional housing. In the latest episode of the KQED podcast Sold Out: Rethinking Housing in America, hosts Molly Solomon and Erin Baldassari dive deep into what it would actually mean to make housing a right.
In this episode of Who Belongs?, we speak with Carroll Fife, an organizer, mother, and director of the Oakland office of the Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment, also known as ACCE. She joins us to speak about the history of speculative housing and its impacts on the Black community, the looming eviction crisis, houselessness, and police violence. Texas Coffee Company began in Beaumont, Texas in 1921 when Charles J. Fertitta, Sr. recognized the demand for a good quality coffee with a distinctive aroma and flavor. Mr. Fertitta began with an investment of $1800 and a Ford Model-T truck, a few pounds of coffee and a one room “shotgun” style shack in back of the Crescent Market on Magnolia Street in downtown Beaumont. In 1926, Mr. Fertitta recapitalized the company by forming a partnership with R. C. Maceo and Joseph S. Serio. They moved Texas Coffee Company to a larger, more modernized facility that was better equipped to handle the growing customer base. Texas Coffee Company is the manufacturer and distributor of Seaport coffee and Texas Coffee. Each brand is distinctly different and appeals to different types of coffee drinkers. Seaport’s parent company, Texas Coffee Company, also manufactures a line of spices under the TexJoy label. Like the coffee, people throughout the United States and the world request the spices, which are shipped wholesale to a very loyal clientele.

Spartanburg parents looking for more family-friendly amenities in downtown Spartanburg will soon have a brand new option for their little ones after City Council voted unanimously on Monday to approve an agreement supporting a new 6,000-square-foot satellite facility for the Children's Museum of the Upstate at 130 Magnolia Street. Under the agreement, the City will provide $100,000 in funding for the facility, divided into five $20,000 annual payments. According to the museum’s president and CEO, Nancy Halverson the group has raised $1.25 million of the estimated $1.5 million needed to open the new facility. Today on the podcast we're delving into details of the planned museum and discussing its impact on our rapidly growing downtown.
Walking down the western side of Magnolia Street will be a lot less claustraphobic pretty soon, as our latest streetscaping project is underway between Dunbar and W Saint John streets. The Magnolia Street project is the third of the City's $2.3 million streetscaping plan, passed by Council in 2014. Designed to improve storefront visibility, create additional public space, and significantly improve the street's pedestrian experience. Plans call for replacing and widening the sidewalk, as well as constructing four “sidewalk patios,” around 24 ft. wide and 42 ft. long, meant to serve as outdoor dining space. The project also includes changes to the street's landscaping, removing the existing trees located in the sidewalk, and replacing them with trees planted primarily around the patio spaces. No on-street parking will be lost as a result of the project. But that's far from the only thing happening in downtown Spartanburg this summer, with construction sites (and soon-to-be construction sites) seemingly around every corner. Today on the podcast, we're digging a little deeper on this streetscaping project, and taking a larger look at both public and private investment that has downtown Spartanburg buzzing in 2016.

So far on in our series exploring the economic power of Downtown Spartanburg, we've talked about the economic importance of the area around Morgan Square, and spent some time discussing the large investments that have transformed one section of our city's downtown. But what about the walk between those sections of Downtown? Isn't there something the City can do to make that experience simpler and more pleasant? What about the family enjoying a walk down the Mary Black Foundation Rail Trail only to get to the corner of Henry and Union streets and find the trail ending, and a daunting crossing and an unpleasant walk standing between them and all that Downtown Spartanburg has to offer? How might improving the walkability along Church Street encourage visitors to the Marriott to take a stroll down to Morgan Square. As it happens, we think about those questions all the time, and rather than just pondering the possibilities, last year City Council voted to do something about it. That plan promises to touch nearly every part of Downtown Spartanburg. Projects include: extending the Mary Black Foundation Rail Trail into Downtown and through to Barnet Park (building South Carolina's first curb-protected bike lane in the process), straightening the chicanes along E. Main Street, and improvements to the sidewalks on Magnolia Street between St. John and W. Main streets and Church Street from the Marriott into the heart of Downtown. Make no mistake, this isn't just a beautification project. These infrastructure improvements are meant encourage development and growth by connecting people with the businesses and amenities that make Downtown Spartanburg great. In other words, it's all about increasing the economic power of Downtown Spartanburg, and today on the podcast, we sit down with Partners for Active Living Trails Coordinator, Ned Barrett to talk about some of the ways these projects are going to improve both the quality of life for our residents and the bottom line for our businesses.
