Summary: Have you heard the saying “get out of your head” when talking about athletes who are anxious for a competition or a performance? Oftentimes, dance teachers will say, “You're overthinking! Just get out of your head,” to encourage dancers to be more present and just dance. I get it, but while that's generally good advice, it might not actually be helping your dancers the way you think it does. When you ask a dancer to get out of their head, is that considered mental toughness, is that mindfulness, or is that neither of the two? In this episode, I'll clarify the difference between mental training and mindfulness, and I'll take you through an explanation of why “getting out of your head” isn't actually the best strategy. I hope this episode helps you understand the differences between the two and walk away with actionable strategies to help strengthen your dancers' mindsets. Resources - Did you enjoy today's episode? Have You Checked The Fluids?

Real Estate Survival Guide

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 26, 2022 8:37

Summary: Have you checked the fluids? That is how the conversation starts every time I call my mechanic, the amazing J&C Auto in Lancaster, right off Whitmore road. They're the best mechanics I've ever known. There's a great lesson in every conversation I have when I call the mechanic. Now you might be thinking, well, that's kind of a silly question. Of course, he checks the fluids. Why would the mechanic ask? And let me just say, I'll have to give a special shout out to my stepdad, Rob. Rob spent years and years trying to teach me how to fix cars, change my oil. I was not interested. Some people have different interests and gifts. I just was never interested. Even now when there's an easy fix, I would much rather pay the mechanic to do it because I don't wanna mess something up. I don't really have the time, and I don't enjoy it. I want to do the things that give me energy, that I enjoy. The reason that Jerry or Colin or Ethan or whoever answering the phone at J&C auto always says to me, have you checked the fluid is because for so long, I did not check the fluids. I would drop off a car and say, it's making a weird noise. For years I thought my transmission was going every single time that I called them. Oh, it's shifting weird. No, John, you just don't have fluid. Imagine, every time these guys answered the phone, they were like, oh, here's John again. He hasn't checked the fluids. I was not doing those basic things. I was not checking the fluids. Often, this happens in the real estate business. I chat with Realtors all the time now through the membership community and just talk to them about what they're doing, how I can help. And they are not doing the basic things. They haven't even told anyone they're a Realtor. Well, how, how can I help you grow a business when no one knows you are Realtor? So many Realtors are not doing the basic stuff. And when I talk to you, and you tell me you're not doing the basic things, I think to myself, you're crazy. It's stupid. Just like it's stupid that I wasn't checking the oil or adding transmission fluid. A car needs to have their fluids. Maybe you are not having success because you haven't checked the fluids. You haven't done the routine maintenance on your vehicle. I would really encourage you to think about this in your business. Have you check the fluids? If you haven't start doing it, start regularly, checking the fluids, start regularly, making sure you know the basics of how your business runs, and make sure you analyze them. Check those things to make sure that you are a well-oiled machine. Podcast edited by Kenny Carfagno. Summary: Have you given thought to the digitization of carbon markets? Ben Jeffreys, the CEO of ATEC comes on the show to discuss carbon credits and how this concept contributes to the renewable energy transition. ATEC's mission to decarbonize cooking is just one of the strategies that can aid in offsetting emissions, and the results of these moves towards renewable energy could be seen as early as 2040. Tune in for more information. Highlights: -What do we think of digitization and carbon markets? -Carbon credits underscores a lot of what we don't actually know about carbon emissions and digitization -Carbon credit is essentially the ability of offset your emissions and pay for that privilege -We're trying to transition our entire energy structure, which is no small feat -Most energy transitions, historically, have been taken care of by the market -Is it worth bankrupting the world to go about this transition, or do we let the market take care of it? -If you look at what is happening now, the market is already taking care of this transition -How do you make money off of this? Many companies have committed to the energy transition to renewable resources -What does a carbon credit go for? It fluctuates, but it's sitting around $9-$10 per ton -2040 is probably a realistic goal for when this transition will come to fruition -Globally, we are trying to bring universal access to energy -The transition is not coming because of government policies, but in spite of government policies Useful Links: Financial Survival Network ATEC

Episode 139 - Be More Strategic… Whatever That Means

Leadership Today Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later May 27, 2022 3:44

Summary Have you ever received the feedback that you need to “be more strategic”? We pick apart what this might mean for your development. Transcript Welcome to episode 139 of the Leadership Today podcast where each week we bring research to life in your leadership. This week we explore what it means to be more strategic. As I coach and work with a range of people, it's amazing how often people share they've received feedback that they need to be more strategic. They're typically no more clear about it than that - just that they've been told to be more strategic.  If this sounds like you, the first advice I give is to setup time with the person who provided the feedback to better understand what they meant. In a non-challenging way, ask for examples. Have them describe what being more strategic would look like in your role. This is likely to draw out a clearer picture of what you should be working on and the impact it is having on your performance. I believe there are four main areas where we can all be more strategic. That being strategic is about time horizon, breadth of focus, interpersonal consideration and openness to new ideas. Let's take a look at each of these. Being more strategic could be about the time horizon you bring to your work. We can all end up not looking far enough into the future, particularly when we're under pressure. We all have a tendency to focus on immediate threats, rather than longer-term threats and opportunities. Take time to look and plan further out into the future. Being more strategic could be about the breath of your focus. Sometimes we can become too narrowly focused on our own interests or areas of expertise. Take the time to look more broadly beyond your specialisation. What are people doing in other industries or geographies? What broader trends are playing out in business and society? A great way to do this is to read more widely. If you find yourself reaching for the same kind of reading material, branch out. Ask for recommendations from others. Meet with people with different professional backgrounds and speak to them about emerging trends they are seeing. Being more strategic could be about Interpersonal consideration. Sometimes we don't take enough time to take others' needs and interests into account. We can then end up blind-sighted when our brilliant plan is opposed. Build connections across your organisation and run your ideas past others to gather their views and feedback. Ask for advice. You don't have to just take on everything they say, but it's much better to be genuinely interested and informed. Being more strategic could be about openness to new ideas. Those who are seen as not being strategic can often be caught up in the past or the current way of doing things. They may oppose change, even when the change is inevitable or likely to be beneficial. A great quality and practice here is curiosity. Rather than seeking to respond to others' ideas right away, stay curious and ask lots of questions. Take some time this week to examine how strategic you're being across these four areas. Have a great week.

Summary Have you had an ‘aha’ moment lately? New research provides clues into why some of us find insights so addictive.   Transcript Hello and welcome to episode 94 of the Leadership Today podcast where each week we tackle one of today’s biggest leadership challenges. This week we explore the power of insights, including what’s going on in our brain when we have them, and some practical ways to have even more insights. There are few things in life better than an ‘aha’ moment - that point where you’ve been grappling with a problem and the solution just suddenly pops into your head. It can feel quite different to solving something by working away at it methodically. Ideas can come as a slow steady slog, but sometimes there are leaps.  Researches earlier this year discovered that these sudden insights can, for some people, trigger the brain’s reward system. That an insight can activate the same areas that highly pleasurable activities and even addictive drugs work on. To explore this, the researchers presented each person with a series of anagrams while using a high resolution EEG to monitor brain activity. Let’s say, for example, that you were presented with the letters ABSIS. Those letters could also make up the word BASIS. But how did you solve that? The participant would press a button to confirm whether it was an insight or more of an analytical process. So the word BASIS might just pop into your head, or you might mentally start shifting the letters around in a more analytical way. Researchers can actually see the moment when the insight occurs as it is accompanied by a burst of gamma-band brainwaves right before the person indicates that they have had an insight solution. So what did they discover? Not surprisingly, they found that insight solutions were faster than analytical solutions. Insights pop into our head much faster than our ability to consciously think through potential solutions. What is really interesting is that many people also showed a second burst in the orbitofrontal cortex - a region of the brain just above the orbits of your eyes, thus the name, which is associated with reward and pleasure. This reward burst occurs just a tenth of a second after the insight, so it is too quick to be the result of conscious thought. It turns out that for many people the insight itself is inherently pleasurable, rather than something that we decide should be pleasurable. The researchers wanted to understand who is more likely to have this reward response, given that not everyone experiences it. To do this they had participants complete a questionnaire on reward sensitivity - the extent to which people were driven more by gaining rewards than the fear of loss. They found that those more focused on gain rather than loss were also more likely to experience a natural reward response when they had an insight. It’s easy to see how that might lead people to spend more time chasing that reward, therefore investing more effort into creativity and insight generation. So what does this mean for me as a leader? Well, let’s assume you don’t have a high resolution EEG lying around the house. Although I will point out that EEG units that hook up to your phone are becoming far more accurate and affordable if you did want to strap one onto the old melon to take a look under the hood. If that’s not an option, here are some other suggestions: Pose yourself problems to solve. This sounds kind of obvious, but if you don’t present your brain with a problem to solve in the first place, you’re not going to have an insight. Keep positive. Researchers found those in a positive mood solved more problems via insight than those with lower mood. There are lots of benefits to having a positive mood. Focus on what you have to gain rather than lose. That will encourage a more insight-based approach to problem solving. Aim for low attention moments. As we have discussed before, people never come up with their best ideas while sitting at their desk. Make the most of those low stress, relaxed moments. Sometimes I pose myself a problem before I go to bed or just before I go for a run. I then don’t try to actively solve the problem - I just let it sit. It’s amazing how many times I have an insight when I wake up, or when I’m cooling down after that run. Celebrate solving something hard. Even if it doesn’t get your reward circuit going in the moment, maybe that piece of chocolate a little later will. If you did want to delve into the research further, I’ve provided a link in the episode notes although, full disclosure, it is a pretty dense bit of reading. And let me know your insight stories - what works for you? You can make contact via the leadership.today website. Have a great week.   Reference Yongtaek Oh, Christine Chesebrough, Brian Erickson, Fengqing Zhang, John Kounios. An insight-related neural reward signal. NeuroImage, 2020; 214: 116757 DOI: 10.1016/j.neuroimage.2020.116757

Chances are it’s a few simple beliefs. Since beliefs drive actions then what we believe really matters. In this episode I talk about 3 big beliefs:1. You Attract You. Let’s face it, someone that is poor at people skills doesn’t attract someone that has great people skills. Someone that is unorganized generally doesn’t attract (or keep) people that are extremely organized. And low performers generally don’t attract high performers. The good news is that high performance leaders generally build high performance teams, and you can learn to become a high-performance leader 2. Add Value before you SELL. Often times I counsel people that are worried about their closing ratio. They don’t seem to be closing sales or adding anyone to their team. What they should be worried about is their Value ratio. Ask yourself this question – “Have I added enough value to this individual to DESERVE their time”?3. It’s ok to hear the word “NO”. Sometimes it’s actually even better to hear NO. Meaning, if someone that you’re thinking you would like on your team doesn’t line up with your values, then a NO is better. Simply put – a NO can save you time and energy. Plus - you’re supposed to get NO’s. Learn to view them as an opportunity to learn and part of the process.Embrace these beliefs and watch you and your team go the next level!Ryan D. In 2008 he purchased his first investment property, and through hard work and dedication left the regimen of the corporate world to become a full-time real estate entrepreneur in 2014. In this episode, learn Gary’s story, the things he lacked in the beginning, how he overcame numerous mistakes, and how having the right mindset and learning from other people on the same journey has helped him win and create some serious success in real estate investing. Topics Covered: 01:12 – Gary tells how his real estate investing journey started 05:21 – What he primarily does as a real estate investor 07:39 – Admitting that he lacked one thing at the beginning 08:06 – What he regards as the biggest mistake most real investors make 07:33 – The most significant mistakes other real estate investors are making 09:53 – Sharing an insightful excerpt from the book Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki 10:12 – Gary talks about his unfair advantage  12:07 – His best advice for people to get over their fear and go forward despite possible failures 15:12 – What he regards as the most significant problem he solved for people he worked with 16:54 – How to connect with Gary and find out more about real estate investing 17:31 – Wrapping up the episode with a piece of actionable advice from Gary – “Attend meetings.  Listen to experts in the industry, or in your local market.  Talk to other real estate investors in your area and do that for about 2-3 months, pick a strategy, then implement it.” Key Takeaways: “I would say that my unfair advantage would be I love to jumping in and taking action. And I would say that I’m also very comfortable with making mistakes.  And I think people that make mistakes, they think that it’s a problem or they’re there. They’re done in the right path, and then they give up. But the key is when you make those mistakes as obviously to learn from it, and then they continue to keep moving forward.” – Gary Hibbert “I think the best thing is the mindset.  It doesn’t have anything to do with money. It has to do with mindset. There are so many different ways to do it, but it’s about writing down your goals, and once you do it, you move forward with that.  So, mindset is such a huge thing, and learning from other people that have gone through that journey.” – Gary Hibbert

Get full post, summary, audio, quote cards, and more at: http://milewalk.com/mwblog/how-visualize-way-success SUMMARY Have you ever felt like you were driving through your life or your career with the emergency brake on? It feels as if no matter how hard you work at something, you’re simply not progressing as quickly as you’d like? Today, I want to talk about a daily exercise I’ve practiced religiously—visualization. And, provide some insight into how to visualize your way to success. Five minutes of this every day will improve your life dramatically. When did that gray hair and eye wrinkle show up? I never notice my face change from day to day. Only when I look at pictures from a few years back can I see the transformation. Much of your life is like this. Your career is like this. Your marriage can be like this. While most people prefer to slow the aging process, many want to accelerate their lives and careers. Much like the unnoticeable change with age, your progress from day to day becomes imperceptible. Oftentimes, you’ll feel better about your advancements if you take time to look back at where you were one, three, and five years ago. That’ll help your psyche a bit. I’m sure many of you are like me. You feel where you’ve been is history. You care more about getting where you’re going—and you want to get there is a hurry! First Step: Before you look forward, take a deep breath and spend a few moments realizing (yes—realizing) how far you’ve come and all you’ve accomplished. In fact, spend a few minutes every day doing this. What’s the best way to get from where I am to where I want to go? There are few key principles to understand to help you quickly get from where you are to where you want to go: Identify where you want to go. Make sure you’re working toward something you love. Believe you can accomplish it. Identify. The first is you’ll get where you’re going faster if you know where you want to go. It also helps to know where you are. Don’t laugh. Most people are in a much better starting position than they realize. Love. The second is you’ll make greater leaps in life by doing small things you love than doing big things you don’t. You need to enjoy yourself each day because your passion and optimism will fuel getting things done. Most importantly, don’t let what you can do stop you from doing what you were meant to do! Believe. The third is you need to believe you can get there and be unafraid to jump in! At least once a day, I think about this fantastic quote from American Naturalist and Essayist John Burroughs. He said, “Leap, and the net will appear.” (If you’re really ambitious, check out The Art of Seeing Things: Essays by John Burroughs and You’ll See it When You Believe it by Wayne Dyer.) You believe it. Then it happens. It’s never the other way around. Where’s the 5-minute thing you promised me? I’m in a hurry… Okay antsy pants. Visualize yourself at your end-state even though you don’t know how to get there. Imagine yourself at your “destination.” What’s it like? How does it feel? How does it sound? What will the end-state allow you to do? Imagine this for five minutes. It’s okay to dream, but you’re more likely creating a reality. “Five minutes” means you can do this in the shower, on the train, or wherever. It’s best to do it in a quiet location. This visual of you in all your glory will have pull power—it’ll feel like it’s pulling you toward it. In actuality, you’ll be pushing yourself toward it one step at a time. There are really only two steps required for the greatest level of success: the next step and the extra step. You simply need to know what you need to do next to move toward your destination. Putting a little extra effort along the way will separate you from the masses who are unwilling to do that. Picture the end-state, what it’s like, how it feels, how is sounds, and what it will enable you to do. You need to do this repetitively as you work toward this transition and evolution. That will help you do this one-day at a time. Then take what you’ve identified as the next step. And take it. One step at a time. One fantastic resource to help you visualize your future is Living Forward: A Proven Plan to Stop Drifting and Get the Life You Want. It’s a great book by Michael Hyatt and Daniel Harkavy. I hope you enjoy it. Like this episode? Please share it via social media and review it on YouTube on iTunes! 4 Insidious Killers of Success and How to Avoid Them

Get Motivated, Get Moving With Jordan Strauss

Summary: Have you ever had a goal that you worked really hard at only to wonder where your results went? Well, the reason you’ve felt this way is because of things called Insidious Killers of Success. Insidious means something that is barely noticeable, and Insidious Killers of Success are things that often times happen without us even realizing it and it can be extremely damaging. The Insidious Killers of Success 1. DIGGING UP THE SEED BEFORE IT SPROUTS. The analogy that you plant a seed into your garden, wait patiently for something to happen with no results, then dig up the seed to check and see if something will happen, only to have to rebury it and start the process over again.  The seed will not sprout unless you leave it buried.  The Law of Gestation says that everything (even and especially our goals) need a gestation or incubation period to fully form. 2. PUTTING UNNECESSARY OBSTACLES IN FRONT OF YOURSELF. Somebody once asked Ernest Hemingway how to write a novel and he replied, “First you defrost the refrigerator.”  We all place unnecessary obstacles in front of ourselves to avoid doing what really needs to be done, so ask yourself:  Do I really need to do it that way? Does it really need to take that long? Remember that chances are you’re not the first person to try what you’re trying to do, so research others who have tried it and skip past the beginning obstacles they had to go through first. 3. HAVING UNSUSTAINABLE ROUTINES THAT WILL KEEP YOU ON THE THE HAMSTER WHEEL OF BURNOUT. Having a challenging routine is okay, but having an unsustainable routine is not.  Success is usually associated with hard work (which is good), but it can also be associated with unrealistic restrictions on yourself and that isn’t necessary. For example, Frederick Eklund, the most successful real estate agent in New York City, works Monday through Friday and only half of Sunday to give himself time for himself.  Don’t stop sleeping, don’t stop taking care of yourself, and don’t stop doing things like paying bills or spending time with family because these will lead to a burn out and that is not sustainable. 4. CONSCIOUSLY WANTING MORE BUT SUBCONSCIOUSLY BEING SO COMFORTABLE WITH WHERE YOU’RE AT THAT YOU WILL SABOTAGE YOURSELF OUT OF SUCCESS. We are often times comfortable in our discomfort meaning that regardless of how comfortable things may be now, we would rather go through the pain of keeping this the same than go through the pain of change.  How to fix this: Get in touch with the internal dialogue when you’re trying to do something (the one that says it’s okay to have that extra slice of cake when you’re on a diet) and learn how to tune it out. Get a coach or someone to hold you accountable to your word because sometimes we can’t see what other people see. Visualize a better future for yourself and deal with the discomfort to make it a reality. When you can understand, overcome, and eliminate these things, you will be able to eliminate the Four Insidious Killers of Success.
